Discovering the Deepings issue 132, June 2026

Page 1

Welcome to your June issue...

Those longed-for sunny days and warm evenings could at last be here, so let the outdoor fun and games begin! It seems only weeks since the garden furniture and barbecue were safely stashed away for winter, and now, here we are … ready and willing to brave whatever the elements decide to throw our way. As I write, a torrential storm has just been followed within minutes by the sun. Oh, to be in England now that summer’s (nearly) here! Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month!

One very significant birthday this month (and one which I dare not forget!) sees our amazing Sales Account Manager for our Wisbech and March issues, Paula Kirtland, reaching the grand age of - -! Have a great day, “Big Sister!”

A reminder to you all that June 21st happens to be Father’s Day, so love and best wishes go to my husband, Chris, and father-in-law, Rich.

Claire x

As parents, we’re always reminding our children to use “please” and “thank you”. It was most amusing, then, to recently hear two of our young granddaughters politely asking ‘Alexa’ for some music. “Alexa, please play songs by Taylor Swift”, Nancy and Violet requested in turn, innocently not realising yet that they are dealing with an inanimate piece of machinery, not requiring the polite approach!

Still astonished by the epic performance of Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe in “smashing the two-hour barrier” for an official marathon, in London, our wonderful sporting summer continues this month with the men’s cricket First Test against New Zealand on June 4th, and the FIFA World Cup starting a week later. Bring it on!! And finally:

➡ When Ed heard that a bee has five eyes, he said, “Yeah, but it’s only got two ‘e’s”.

➡ I once saw a sign that read, ‘Watch for Little Children,’ and I thought, “That sounds like a fair swap.”

Langtoft Primary School

Our OPAL Play Leaders organised a fantastic Easter-themed fundraising event designed to support the continued development of our outdoor play provision, which included a cake sale, guess the name of the Squishmallow, Easter quiz and a raffle to win three hampers, prizes of which were very kindly donated by Deeping’s Tesco and Co-op. A big thank you to all who supported the event!

In Forest School, pupils have been busy connecting with nature in a very special way. To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, Years 1 and 2 children designed and built a wonderful bug hotela fitting tribute to such an inspiring naturalist and a great hands-on learning experience for all involved.

We have also enjoyed several school trips and sporting competitions, giving pupils the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom, and have welcomed family members into school for our ‘Learn with Your Child’ events.

Linchfield Primary School Gardening and Football

Mr Goff, Mrs Twelvetree and various groups of children have been working incredibly hard to improve and maintain our school garden area, as well as the planters at the front of the school. They are doing a fantastic job, and their hard work and dedication are really making a difference to the appearance of our school environment. Thank you to everyone involved.

Our Linchfield girls’ footballers

We still have a small number of places available for EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) starting in September 2026, in addition to spaces in Years 1 and 3, and would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining our school community.

are officially the third best team in the county! With three wins, three draws and just one defeat, they finished level on points with the second placed team, but with an inferior goal difference. An incredible performance from every single player. Well done!

Baston C of E Primary School: Godly Play Session

On Wednesday April 29th, Early Years Foundation Stage children walked to the church in Baston for their “Godly Play” session. Reverend Carolyn showed them all the different features of the church before reading a story from the bible. The pupils listened intently to ‘The Good Shepherd’ and watched Reverend Carolyn use figures and pieces of cloth to act the story out. Afterwards, there followed some crafting activities with paper, pens, pipe cleaners, pom poms and cotton wool, making lots of different creations related to ‘The Good Shepherd’.

CoppaFeel! An Appeal from Linda Kinch of “Bourne Boobies”

CoppaFeel! is a breast cancer awareness charity based in London, focused on promoting early detection of breast cancer by encouraging women under thirty to regularly check their breasts.

Linda Kinch explains, “A good friend of mine, Michelle Collins, was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago. Thankfully, she caught it early and, after surgery, is now doing well. Last year, we both undertook a half marathon for the charity Coppafeel! Michelle also completed a five-day, 100km trek last November in the Sahara with them too.

This year, to up the ante, we are both trekking a marathon in the Peak District on May 9th, and I am tackling a 100km trek with 130 others on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset over the week, commencing on June 6th.

I have a hefty target to achieve, fundraising for Coppafeel! and while I have already raised a huge amount (we held a Tea Party

Calling all Business Owners!

It’s coming into ‘exhibition season’ for us, and this year we are showcasing The Succession Method: A clear, strategic approach to succession planning, designed specifically for business owners.

Too many businesses falter when a key decision-maker becomes unable to continue, leaving key stakeholders, partners and families facing uncertainty, delay and unnecessary risk. The Succession Method addresses this head-on by focusing on continuity, control and commercial reality.

Rather than starting with documents alone, this method begins with structured conversations about ownership, decision-making authority and future leadership. From there, it creates a tailored succession pathway that aligns

legal planning with the practical needs of the business. This is in the form of business and personal Lasting Powers of Attorney, wills and trusts. The Succession Method also encourages you to think about access to critical information, operations and delivery, key people and stakeholder alignment and authority to make decisions.

If you are a business owner and want to discuss your business continuity plans to safeguard what you have worked so hard to build, I encourage you to get in touch so we can discuss how your plans can be strengthened to ensure they are watertight. There’s no time like the present!

For advice or to discuss your requirements, please contact us on 01778 252301 or email advice@wplegal.co.uk.

Who would believe that Les is a Lancashire lass with her current South African accent? But she is, and she learned much about traditional English baking from her mother. Terry had his own solicitor’s practice, and his friends now joke with him that he retired as a barrister to become a barista!

Les and Terry took over Godsey Lane Coffee in April 2022, using Les’s previous restaurant experience (once she had retired as a head teacher!) With family living in Market Deeping, they were thrilled to find a coffee shop to become their new “home”.

LES SAYS:

“We now offer our excellent bespoke coffee, teas, homemade bakery treats, plus scrumptious breakfasts and lunches. Our new extension and kitchen have opened up options for delicious new items – more to come soon! Summer will be celebrated in our new garden area which is

‘a work in progress’!

We have, hands down, the best staff (and Eli, our ginger manager) – I just love them! They serve the community more than just food – they also serve friendship and laughter with their sometimesnaughty antics. It is such a pleasure to serve here in the Deepings, and we are so grateful for the community support.

When Times Were Hard

Three stout, healthy girls eight years of age and one stout boy nine years of age to be put out as apprentices” read a notice published by Market Deeping parish in 1813. The children were paupers, and by finding employers to feed and house them, local taxpayers would be relieved of that expense.

Almost a hundred years later, school was compulsory for eight-year-old Eric Bowman, but he recalled doing odd jobs for fourteen hours a week to help his widowed mother who received only a small amount of money from the parish. His family lived in the Market Place and relied on free soup which was provided by several wealthy residents from their own funds. He remembered a lot of poverty in the early 1900s, with boys wearing ragged trousers and boots passed down from other families.

Deeping people who were unable to work and support themselves due to ill-health or age were admitted to the Workhouse at Bourne. It was usual for inmates to receive special food at Christmas, but one member of the Board of Guardians argued strongly that they should also have beer. George Hildyard of Market Deeping was a retired solicitor, known for his generosity. On Coronation Day in 1911, he donated coffee and strawberries to the Workhouse, and on other occasions he provided pork pies and daily newspapers to brighten the inmates’ lives. There were fierce arguments by other Board members against Mr Hildyard paying for beer, but eventually he got his way. One grateful recipient wrote, “Long live the donor, we drink his health today. For English cheer is good old beer, and a pint of it, hooray!”

Many farm labourers received no pay when wintry weather prevented work on the land, so they also relied on seasonal charity from prosperous villagers. At harvest time, large numbers of Irishmen tramped to the Fens, hoping to earn money to relieve the poverty of their own families. Other casual labourers and travelling salesmen who were temporary residents found cheap accommodation in a lodging house attached to the Masons Arms beer house in Bridge Street, Deeping St James. Men slept in dormitories and shared cooking facilities to prepare their own food. There was a separate dormitory for any female residents.

With a beer house next door, disorderly behaviour was not uncommon, but in 1930, when closure of the Masons Arms was considered, the police decided it was advantageous to retain it. There were four bedrooms for thirteen lodgers, and it served a purpose not met by other pubs. By then, Bourne Workhouse had closed and parishes were no longer responsible for supporting their own people in need. The lodging house was demolished after the Masons Arms finally ceased trading in 1956.

The Employment Rights Act 2025

Your Questions Answered

QWhat is changing under the Employment Rights Act 2025 when it comes to unfair dismissal?

The Employment Rights Act 2025 is expected to reduce the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims from two years to six months, with the change anticipated from January 2027. Employees recruited before then may still qualify from January 2027 if they have six months’ service at the point of dismissal, so decisions made now could be assessed later.

QWhy is this a concern for business owners?

A shorter qualifying period means less time to assess suitability and higher legal exposure early in employment. Tribunal claims are time-consuming and costly: legal fees can be £5,000–£20,000+, and compensation for unfair dismissal can be significant, alongside management time, disruption, and reputational risk.

QHow can businesses protect themselves when recruiting new employees?

Start with a clear job description and objective criteria for selection. In interviews, be transparent about duties and standards, and keep notes of questions, answers, and reasons for selection; this demonstrates a fair, consistent approach if decisions are challenged later.

QWhat role does the probationary period play under these new rules?

Probation becomes your key window to set expectations and address issues. Hold regular review meetings, confirm objectives in writing, record feedback, and evidence any support offered. If it’s not documented, it’s hard to prove a fair process.

QWhat role does the probationary period play under these new rules?

For managing performance, employers should implement structured and regular review meetings, ideally monthly, to assess progress, provide feedback, and address concerns early.

QWhat should employers do if a new starter is not meeting the required standard?

Act promptly and consistently: explain the shortfalls, set clear improvement targets and timescales, provide reasonable support/training, and keep detailed records of meetings and outcomes. If dismissal becomes necessary, a wellevidenced process is your best defence.

QWhat is “constructive dismissal” and how does it relate to unfair dismissal claims?

Constructive dismissal is where an employee resigns because they believe the employer fundamentally breached the contract (e.g., unfair treatment, lack of support, or failure to follow procedure). If the qualifying period reduces to six months, more employees may be able to bring these claims, so fair processes and clear communication matter throughout employment, not just at dismissal. Under the new rules, employees with six months’ service may be able to bring constructive dismissal claims.

QWhat is the key takeaway for local businesses?

Good HR practices are essential: clear roles and expectations, fair and consistent decisions, structured probation reviews, and strong written records. If you’re unsure, get HR advice early; it can prevent costly disputes later.

Chilling New Wave of AI-assisted Fraud Targets Older People

Phone scams are taking a sinister twist as a new approach sees victims’ voices being cloned. It takes just three seconds of audio to clone a voice, and the latest fraud tactic seems to be targeting older people. Criminals are using AI technology to clone people’s voices and set up unauthorised direct debits over the phone, according to new evidence from National Trading Standards. The advanced voice cloning is part of an organised criminal operation that harvests people’s personal data to target victims with a wave of scam and nuisance calls.

The process usually starts with a ‘cold call’ claiming to run a survey. This may seem harmless enough, but in fact it is designed to gather detailed personal, health and financial information. The criminals use this data to develop AI-generated voice clones, used to simulate consent for direct debits, deceiving even legitimate businesses and financial providers. These details appear then to be passed or sold to other criminal operations who, with the details, can easily circumvent the banks and set up payments without the victim’s knowledge. Worryingly, victims often do not realise payments are being taken.

As part of the data, figures from National Trading Standards show that 21% of adults receive scam calls or texts most days, and almost 9% receive them every day. This new wave of technologically sophisticated scams highlights the need for increased vigilance, particularly among older people who are often specifically targeted.

Some of you may have seen the subject covered on a recent episode of BBC’s “Morning Live” with Scam Interceptor, Nick Stapleton. His advice is to stay silent on the phone if you receive a cold call or a call you are not expecting and / or simply hang up without engaging in conversion. Ultimately, be cautious about sharing personal information over the phone and to be alert to any suspicious activity on your accounts. If you or someone you know receives unexpected calls asking for personal information, it is recommended to hang up and contact your bank or service provider directly using trusted contact details.

Most tender crops should now be ready for planting out and with the risk of frosts gone, it should be safe to do so. Make sure to harden off plants by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over several days and water thoroughly, before and after planting.

To minimise evaporation, water early in the morning or late in the evening. Also, plants benefit from deep watering less often, rather than everyday light watering, as this encourages roots to grow downwards which builds resilience in dry spells. As the crops will now be showing more vigorous growth, some will benefit from extra feed. Tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers in particular benefit from regular feeding with a potassiumrich fertiliser. For fruiting crops compost, wellrotted manure, or comfrey tea make excellent natural feeding options; feed once a week.

Not only will your crops benefit from the longer sunnier days... so will the weeds! Try to keep them at bay as they use the water and nutrients that your crops need and shade them from the light. Here are a few tips for keeping them at bay:

• Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove remains, so that they won’t re-grow.

• Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use a lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

• Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

Other jobs:

• Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction.

• Earth up potatoes, and harvest earlies towards the end of the month.

• Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off and keep birds off, by covering your plants with netting.

• Cut down broad beans just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen.

• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots.

• Sew Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the “Longest Day” (June 21st) as it is less likely to bolt – sowing in succession is a good idea.

• This month, apples have what is called “June Drop” where the tree gets rid of excess fruit. If the branches are still overcrowded, it is worth thinning them out.

• After you’ve picked the last of the rhubarb, give them a good feed of well-rotted manure mixed with compost or Growmore so that they can build up strength for next year.

• Sow maincrop swede and turnips.

Make the most of the long June days!

Deeping St James Primary School

On Friday, April 24th, as a precursor to The London Marathon, DSJ school held their second “Colour Run” … and colourful it certainly was! This was a whole school event, and parents were also invited to come along and run through clouds of paint, with their children, helping fundraise for The Samaritans, and support the school, as they were awarded a ‘Mini London Marathon Award’ for taking part.

It was a glorious day, the sun was shining, the ice cream van was parked up for refreshments afterwards, and there would have been a lot of washing detergent being used that night! DSJ would like to thank everyone taking part for their support.

If you are currently looking for a school place for your child, there are a few places available across the different year groups, so please call the School Office on 01778 342314 to see if they can help.
