The last few weeks have made me realise just how fortunate we are, living so close to the beautiful Bourne Woods, a special dog-walking treat for our two hounds. Fabulous carpets of bluebells, celandines and wood anemones right now are an absolute delight, along with the increasing amount of birdsong, as the evenings remain lighter for longer.

It saddens me, however, when the news from around the world seems to involve a violent and unstable future for us all. If only more people were to follow those wise words of P.T. Barnum in ‘The Greatest Showman’…“The noblest art is that of making others happy.” Those people who are fondly remembered for generations are the ones who will have given their time, love, and kindness to others.

Being an optimist involves seeing “silver linings behind dark clouds”. So, whilst we are forever hearing stark warnings about “global warming”, here is some small consolation. UK wine production in 2025 recorded a 55% increase in harvest volume, compared with 2024. Approximately 16.5 million bottles were produced across the UK, and the long hot summer helped deliver good fruit quality and yields not seen for many years.

“May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope”, suggested Emily Bronte. So, are we to expect awful weather, wish that it would change and hope that June will be better? Oh, to be in England!

And finally:

Peterborough event offers support for menopause strugglers

Anew event in Peterborough is addressing a growing issue affecting women across the UK, that of feeling dismissed or unheard when seeking help for menopause symptoms.

The Midlife Reset Summit, taking place on Sunday, May 17th at The Bull Hotel, Peterborough, has been created in response to what organisers describe as a “gap in support”, where many women feel like they’re being gaslit about their

own health. With NHS services under increasing pressure, many women report being told their symptoms are “normal” or left without clear guidance, despite experiencing fatigue, anxiety, brain fog and weight changes.

A Full Range of Ear and Hearing Support Services

Bourne Ear Care was founded in May 2023 by Julia Brown who had enjoyed a long and successful career as a Hearing Aid Audiologist. Demand for her services quickly grew and in December 2024, Kayla, her daughter, joined the business. By May 2025, Kayla had taken on the majority of the home visits, allowing the team to support more people across the area.

They don’t just offer home visits — although many people love being seen in the comfort of their own home. If you prefer to go to them, they run their only private clinic every Thursday at North Shoes in Bourne.

Julia is also accredited under the NHS contract at the Bourne Galletly Practice, where patients are referred directly through their GP surgery. Anyone registered with a GP in South Lincolnshire can access microsuction wax removal with her there.

Ingredients

Serves 6

1.25kg new potatoes, halved

10g dill, chopped

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

150g half-fat crème

30g flat-leaf parsley, chopped

1½ tbsp sherry vinegar

Jersey Royals are now in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe... worth firing up the barbecue for!

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

• If using a gas barbecue, pre-heat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

Market Deeping’s Great Fire

In 1685, the village suffered a disastrous fire which destroyed property to the value of £2,495. As a comparison, when thirty houses and other buildings in Peterborough were burnt down in 1656, the damage totalled £2,155. At that time, many buildings were thatched and fires spread easily. The only fire-fighting tools were leather buckets for carrying water and long poles with metal hooks for pulling down burning roofs and timbers.

The 1913 photograph shows a line of people passing buckets of water from a pump in Towngate, to help to control a small fire in a farmyard until the local fire engine arrived. Primitive methods were still being used here, several centuries on!

With no fire insurance existing in the 1600s, Market Deeping applied for a royal warrant to request financial help from other parishes. This document, known as a “brief”, was read out by clergymen at Sunday services throughout the country, and parishioners’ donations were collected. It was a slow and inefficient process, with some parishes choosing not to contribute and others sending small amounts. Deeping received money from Kent, Cheshire and Northamptonshire, as well as villages in Lincolnshire, but a full list of donors and the total sum raised is not recorded.

Fire insurance companies only became widespread in the early 1800s, when a printer and stationer in the Market Place became an agent for the County Fire Company, and one of their metal plaques was attached to a beam inside an archway of the Town Hall. It shows Britannia in gold on a red background, and acted as an advertisement for the company, whilst also identifying that the building was insured.

No copies of Market Deeping’s brief have survived, so the cause of the fire and its exact site are no longer known. Towngate and Church Street are unlikely locations, as they mainly consisted of well-spaced farmsteads at that time. In the Market Place, properties were built much closer together and included shops and warehouses containing valuable goods.

On the north side there was a courthouse, the Bull Inn and several alehouses, while on the south side, houses and business premises stretched across the present Bridge Foot into Stamford Road - the bridge was then situated in High Street. Next to the riverbank were warehouses storing grain, wood and imported commodities such a wine, sugar and spices.

One possible casualty of the fire was a large inn called The Swan, backing on to The River Welland. It had been trading in the 1550s and was re-built around 1685 along with nearby properties, but unless new evidence comes to light, the extent of the destruction remains a mystery.

Linchfield Academy’s Busy Term

Years 1 and 2 Visit to Burghley House

A very exciting day out where the pupils had the pleasure of meeting Queen Victoria (who was an actress, much to the children’s confusion!) They then had a look at several Victorian artifacts and played Victorian ‘parlour games’. Touring the kitchen, the children were shown a huge spit roast which would have been turned by hand by children their age! Finally, they saw the bedroom Queen Victoria slept in and the incredible paintings that covered every wall. All in all, a brilliant day out!

Years 1 and 2 Science

Investigating materials and their properties, the pupils looked at which materials are waterproof, which materials are strong and which materials would be best for a cape, perfect for a superhero teddy! They really enjoyed creating their capes and attaching them to their teddies.

Sporty Times at William Hildyard Primary School

It’s been a very busy term, with numerous local sporting competitions, including a cross-country event on Glebe Park with over 175 children from six different schools.

Our Key Stage 2 footballers are currently in action in the Deepings Primary Schools’ league and our after-school club runners have been running their socks off taking part in the ‘TCS Schools Mini London Marathon’. This event encourages children to be active and healthy, running at least two miles over a three-week period. The school has been awarded a trophy in recognition of their hard work.

We are also very proud to be selected as a target school by England Rugby. This means that some staff have had specialist training from an England rugby coach and we are delivering the new T1 rugby sessions to some of our children, with some very exciting news about a venture with England Rugby, William Hildyard Primary and the BBC due soon!

Linchfield girls’ footballers are the third best team in the county, narrowly coming third on goal difference in a recent tournament. What a great performance by all the girls involved!

Willy Wonka Visits Deeping School!

Market Deeping Community Primary School enjoyed something a bit different at the end of term.

They had a “Wonderlicious” Chocolate Bar Sale, where the children bought “Wonderlicious” bars and Willy Wonka and an Oompa-Loompa handed them out. Each bar had the opportunity to find a Golden Ticket! The Golden Ticket prizes were all donations from local businesses and ranged from a bag of sweets (donated by Londis) to bowling and pizza at The Deepings Caravan Park. The children had a great time joining in and it was a lovely way to see off the end of term.

How to Spot a Rogue Trader on Your Doorstep,

or on that of a Vulnerable Neighbour

Spring is here and many of us are looking to spruce up the exterior of our property, including the garden, driveway, fascia and cladding. There is a fair chance that, before you can research and contact a tried and tested, reliable tradesperson, some unscrupulous cowboy builder or rogue trader will be knocking on your door, or on that of a vulnerable, elderly neighbour.

An older person in England and Wales becomes a victim of fraud every fifty-six seconds, according to research! According to an analysis of the Crime Survey for England and Wales by MoneySuperMarket, 22.7% of respondents, aged sixty-five and over, reported being the victim of fraud between September 2024 and 2025.

Whatever the job, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’.

Beware of these “red flags” and report anything you believe may be suspicious:

• A vehicle that has been parked outside the house for some time or which frequently comes and goes.

• Your neighbour being kept talking on the doorstep for what seems an unusual length of time.

• Work being carried out with no obvious signs of health and safety, for example, workers on the roof with no protective clothing or scaffolding.

• Work that looks shoddy, untidy or unfinished, even to the untrained eye.

Doorstep rogue traders have a knack of catching people off guard. Remember:

• Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment.

• Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing.

• Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out.

• Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work.

• Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach.

• If you do not feel confident in asking them to leave, take a leaflet and report it to the trading standards or 101 if you suspect something isn’t quite right.

May can provide a variety of adverse weather conditions, so you may have to protect young seedlings from a late frost or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have enough rain. Harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches” by cutting down the 2 litre plastic drinks bottles, (useful for protecting young runner beans and peas). Alternatives to use are fleece, bubble wrap or newspaper. Also, hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month as sometimes they are planted too early: the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate. Whatever the weather, it does seem to favour the weeds!! So, make sure these are kept in check as they take precious nutrients away from young plants and seedlings.

Other jobs to do this month include:

• Earth up potatoes-when the leaves are about 20cm tall, draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cm high: this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green and poisonous.

• May is suitable for planting out early, such as leeks, sprouts and summer cabbage. Leek seedlings should resemble a pencil in size. Make a 6-inch-deep hole with a pole

or a similar tool, place the seedling inside, and fill the hole with water. There is no need to fill in the hole with soil.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Some crops may require support ready for their growth, such as beans and peas and climbing plants. Ensure it is strong and sturdy to take the weight once the fruits have formed, as well as the foliage, and that it can withstand any winds.

• Seeds to sow out this month include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

• Try “succession sowing” a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply, rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

• Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and towards the end of the month, when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

• Put up supports for climbing beans and runner beans. You can either buy a readymade support or make a wigwam or row using bamboo canes or hazel poles.
