Mother’s Day on March 15th and the start of British Summer Time a fortnight later on March 29th. That word “summer” sounds so beautiful to my ears right now, especially having suffered at the hands of the “rain gods” lately. When did we ever see so much rain? I know there’s the old term “February fill dyke” but really …!

Mother’s Day, of course, is when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing, a whole day in which we are spoilt rotten. Seriously, we do not expect the earth on Mother’s Day. It’s just lovely to get some recognition, whatever form that may take, for all our multi-tasking abilities and for our level-headedness and calm when the waters of the family home may sometimes get a little choppy! Three years on from Paula and I losing our own mother, we can join many others and think fondly of mums no longer with us – those wonderful memories continue to make us so grateful for their love and dedication. Finally, from all of us mums, thanks in advance for all the flowers, chocolates, perfume and big hugs!
A few years ago, when our daughter, Polly ran her first marathon, to be followed just a fortnight afterwards by her second, I likened it to the old cliché about London buses coming, two at a time, after a long wait. Fast forward to early February and her husband, Bryan has recently completed the “Enigma Quadzilla 2026” in Milton Keynes – an eyewatering four marathons in four consecutive days over the same course. I’m sure there must be another cliché in there somewhere.
Let’s hope March brings us all some spring sunshine at last, and all you mums every beautiful Mother’s Day gift you so richly deserve on March 15th. Don’t forget … clocks forward an hour on March 29th!
And finally:
• Bryan had some shock absorbers fitted to his running shoes – he said they’d put a spring in his step.
• Struggling to think of an anagram for nuclear gave me an ulcer
Enjoy the read.

The children thoroughly enjoyed retelling the story using pictures, puppets, and a variety of resources to create their own imaginative versions.
At Forest School, Stick Man accompanied them on an exciting outdoor adventure. The children embraced the challenge of helping him find his way back to the family tree, showing creativity, problem-solving, and lots of enthusiasm.

Years 1 and 2 had a fantastic time learning about natural and man-made materials. They explored different textures by creating expressive clay faces and using descriptive words to explain how each material felt. The children also worked together to make their own hoopla game using sticks and willow, before heading into the woodland area to search for and identify a variety of natural materials.
The children were given a tour of both buildings as well as learning about the key beliefs of Islam and Christianity. The children were able to make links to our school values. All the children were fantastic, engaged and respectful throughout. We thank the volunteers and both venues for welcoming our school.

When a town experiences such a growth in the number of inhabitants in the way Market Deeping and Deeping St James have in recent years, there is likely to be a shortage of services such as hairdressers, shops, and schools, at least in the short term. It is at this point that any ambitious entrepreneur will be able to spot an opportunity to establish themselves and their new business, expecting there to be sufficient customers to make the move worthwhile.
And so it has been with local hairdresser, Sharon Tarrant who is now settled into her new salon, “Hairdressers” at 13 Peacock Square on the Northfields Industrial Estate in Market Deeping. Sharon has vast experience in the profession, having been the owner of Stamford’s Mojo Hair and Beauty Salon in Ironmonger Street since 2003. Stylist, Tina, who works alongside Sharon at “Hairdressers” has been a successful member of the team at Ruffles in Market Deeping for many years.
Located as it is on Northfields Industrial Estate has given Sharon the opportunity to offer her services, as an incentive, to anyone employed on the estate

for hair appointments between noon and 2pm, with hefty discounts available. What a great way to spend your lunch break, once you’ve shown proof of your workplace? After the lunch slot, a 10% discount will be available for those eligible.
As a further incentive, “Hairdressers” has introduced a loyalty scheme which, in return for four appointments completed, the customer will be eligible for a free fifteen-minute spa treatment in the salon, subject to availability.
Besides offering the usual range of hairdressing options for both women and men, the “Hairdressers” salon has installed a Japanese authentic head spa, providing a most therapeutic treatment as you recline in your chair. Quality products are to be expected, and the Wella Professionals range is their preferred option.
Amongst the several benefits from being located on the Northfields Industrial Estate is the fact that the “Hairdressers” salon has plenty of car parking space outside the building.
At the moment, the salon is open for just three days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) a week, but Sharon is putting out an appeal for any experienced hairdressers who are looking to join the salon on a selfemployed basis. Anyone interested is asked to contact Sharon for further details.

Every Wednesday between 8am and 12 noon, the town market comes alive with the sights, sounds, and scents that define the spirit of the community. From delicious bread and cakes, fresh fish and game, vibrant fresh fruit and vegetables, to honey from local hives and homemade marmalade. The market, located close to the Co-op off Godsey Lane, is more than a place to shopit’s a celebration of hard work, and connection.
The local market is where the community gathers each week to enjoy fresh produce, handmade goods, and friendly conversation.

Every purchase made at the market supports small businesses, keeps money circulating locally, and helps preserve the traditions that help to make the town special as well as reducing the environmental impact of long-distance shipping.
Beyond the economic benefits, the market fosters a sense of belonging. It’s where friendships are formed over a cup of coffee, where children learn about where their food comes from, and where visitors experience the authentic charm of the town. The market is a gathering place that brings people together, week after week.

When it comes to writing your will, the importance of investing in professional services cannot be overstated. There is so much choice out there but there are several red flags to be looking out for when choosing who is to write your will.
Don’t get drawn in by initial low costs. If you’ve found a deal on Groupon to have your will written for £7.99, £29.99 or even £49.99, we’d strongly advise against it. You will likely end up paying thousands after they have used their pressure-selling tactics and won’t leave you alone until you say yes.
When doing your due diligence, make sure you ask for proof of Professional Indemnity insurance. This protects business owners if clients claim a service is inadequate. If something goes wrong, the business is not protected and may be unable to pay out if you sue. It is also important to note that it is a requirement by all regulatory bodies that any practising solicitor must have PI insurance.
Don’t be afraid to ask outright if there is a chance that any more fees or disbursements could appear before agreeing. This way, if any ‘miscalculated’ fees crop up down the line you can dispute them. Most firms have a price list, so make sure you obtain the most recent copy. Transparency is key.

SOPHIE WARD Marketing Manager W&P Legal
Is the estate planner/firm recognised by a professional body? If not, it’s worth being cautious as there’s no evidence to support their knowledge and integrity. Professional bodies include organisations like the Solicitors Regulation Authority, The Law Society and The Society of Will Writers. Most estate planners proudly display their memberships and certifications on their websites and in their offices, so they shouldn’t be hard to find … unless there’s something to hide!
Finally, have you ever been stopped on the high street or in your local supermarket by someone asking if you’ve made your will? For many, this is a bit of a red flag. Businesses have different sales techniques, of course, but this method is pushy and direct for something so personal. Again, chances are they will lure you in with low costs and high expectations, so it’s best just to steer clear.
It’s important to do your research and ask as many questions as possible when looking for the right estate planner for you. Your will should act as a safety net for your family, from appointing legal guardians for your children to managing your estate and leaving gifts. The right estate planner should also be open in helping you mitigate tax implications.
For advice or to discuss your estate planning requirements, please contact us on 01778 252301 or email advice@wplegal.co.uk.
W&P Legal specialises in wills, trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and probate with honesty, empathy and professionalism. Their team of experts are dedicated to offering reliable and trustworthy legal advice, with delivering peace of mind at the heart of the business.

Are you looking to invest in your home by installing a brand-new kitchen with a wealth of storage space, with pull out baskets for instance?
Well, Robert Rippon, owner of ‘Refresh and Renew Kitchen Renovations’ is waiting to hear from you! However, as the name of his company suggests, Robert will be more than happy to explain the many benefits of an alternative way forward, which will save you hundreds of pounds!
Rather than remove the complete set of kitchen units, why not just consider replacing the doors with a top-quality alternative (such as “Ethos Doors” with accompanying “Blum” hinges and accessories)? In as little as one day, Refresh and Renew could transform your present kitchen, with no need to inconvenience you for days with all the mess and disruption created by taking out your old units.
The savings you make would be considerable and the amount of unwanted waste much less than would be the case with a complete removal of the existing kitchen furniture.
Robert takes great pride in every kitchen renovation his firm carry out and this is demonstrated by so many great reviews, five star ratings, on Google and Facebook.
“Rob's help and guidance with picking a new design was really insightful … The work was completed to a fantastic quality in a timely manner and Rob left the house in a neat and tidy condition at all times.” J.C.
“Crucially, his (Rob’s) work is of an exceedingly high standard and it is clear that he takes immense care and pride in what he does.” L.D.
“Fantastic service from start to finish and priced very competitively.” S.D.

Refresh and Renew are also happy to install new kitchen worktops, sinks, taps and an increasingly popular hygienic “AluSplash” splashback option to replace those kitchen tiles, as an accompaniment to your fabulous new doors.
Since 1994, Robert has been self-employed and has diversified from complete home renovations and extensions into this much more niche area of home improvements. With time and with increasing numbers of satisfied customers, the firm started to use a showroom within the Waterside Garden Centre at Baston eight years ago. On display are multiple doors and a whole wall of door samples with colour options and styles available. There’s also a worktop sample stand showing the latest in laminate worktop offerings by the prestigious Formica company.
Operating within a twenty-five-mile radius of their Baston showroom, Refresh and Renew provide their bespoke, made-to-measure doors, and enable their many customers to upgrade their kitchen with a top-quality product at a very competitive price and guaranteed to give you that “Wow!” factor.

Are you feeling weighed down by multiple debts, credit cards, loans, and overdrafts? You’re not alone. Many people, especially at this time of year, find themselves juggling several repayments each month, making it hard to stay on top of their finances.
This is where debt consolidation through your mortgage comes in. It’s a smart, often overlooked solution that could help you regain control of your financial life, without the stress.
Debt consolidation means combining all your outstanding debts into one single loan. Instead of managing several repayments to different creditors, you consolidate them into a single monthly payment, often at a lower interest rate. If you’ve built up equity in your home, this can be a great opportunity to pay off those high-interest debts and streamline your financial situation.
• Lower Interest Rates: Credit cards and personal loans often come with sky-high interest rates. A mortgage, on the other hand, typically offers much lower rates, saving you money in the long run.

• Simplified Finances: Forget trying to remember multiple due dates and managing different repayments. With debt consolidation, you only have to worry about one monthly payment.
• Flexible Repayment Terms: By extending your loan term, you may be able to reduce your monthly payments, making them more manageable, especially if your finances have changed.
Debt consolidation is a great option for many, but it’s not for everyone. It’s important to weigh up the pros and cons, so get in touch and let’s discuss your situation.

If you are involved in a property transaction in England (or Northern Ireland), you must consider whether you have any liability to pay Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT). Different schemes apply for property purchased in Wales (Land Transaction Tax) or Scotland (Land and Buildings Transaction Tax).
Depending on whether you currently own property (or a share in property), have previously owned property or have never owned, different SDLT rates apply.
Different rates apply to residential property purchases and mixed-use or non-residential properties and land. Rates may differ depending on whether you are purchasing the property as an individual or as a company or partnership, and there are exemptions that apply is certain circumstances. Your residency can also affect the rate of SDLT applicable to your purchase.
There are occasions where an application for a refund of higher rate SDLT paid can be claimed, but the circumstances where this can happen
carry their own set of criteria including the observance of fixed timelines.
SDLT is calculated using the purchase price. Where a price is paid for fixtures, strict rules apply as to what can be included and how this must be valued. HM Revenue and Customs can investigate how purchase money is split between property value and fixtures. Should it be determined that the purchase money was not properly split, HMRC can decide that an underpayment has been made and impose the additional SDLT and penalties.
The timescales that must be observed relating to submission or the SDLT return and payment of the tax are strict, and penalties apply for missing deadlines. Ultimately, as this is a tax return submitted in your name as the purchaser, you are responsible for the accuracy and timely submission of the return to HMRC.
A great starting point is the guidance and calculators on the Government’s website: www. gov.uk/stamp-duty-land-tax, but if you want to discuss your purchase and potential SDLT liability in your particular circumstances, then we are here to help you.

As many of you will know, The Old Town Hall in Bourne has recently been granted funding by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to transform it into a unique arts and cultural venue. However, the fundraising doesn’t stop there!
A small group of volunteers has organised an Auction of Promises to take place in Bourne Corn Exchange on Friday March 20th at 7.30pm.
Local businesses have been extremely generous, with donations ranging from meals out to haircuts, tooth whitening treatments to a brand new wheelchair and rounds of golf for four people, through to a guided tour for ten at Spalding Energy Centre, as well as a season ticket for the 2026/27 season at Bourne Town Football Club.
Further afield, however, is where the real “red letter day experiences” begin, many of them with a Strictly Come Dancing theme. Lots include a private singing lesson given locally by a Strictly band singer, a modern dance lesson on Zoom by a Strictly choreographer and a ‘meet and greet’ with tickets to his show in Stamford with Craig Revel Horwood.
There are also two tickets to see “Wicked” on the London West End stage and pieces of work by two local professional artists. Some of you may prefer the Lucky Dip table where you can buy a mystery item for £20 that could be worth up to £50!

Details of all promises and lots in the auction are available at www. bournetownhall.org.uk/auction - take your time to browse through the information, choose your favourites and make a shortlist in advance of the Auction itself.
This is the largest charity auction of this type to be held in Bourne for many years and it is your opportunity to support the transformation of Bourne Old Town Hall and snap up a bargain at the same time. This event is kindly sponsored by Probus Construction.
We have been overwhelmed with the response for donations and would like to say a massive thank you to all our donors, a list of which can be found on the website.
Get your tickets from the Old Town Hall website, www.bournetownhall.org.uk clicking on the Pop-Up Events tab. A licensed bar will be available.

Twenty-five years ago, on February 19th, 2001, Paul and Paula Briggs opened their doors for the first time at Briggs Residential, having no houses to sell and no buyers registered. However, with their previous experience in estate agency, they knew that by offering the right customer service, they would make it work and be successful. With hard work and determination, here they are, a quarter of a century later!
Over the years, the team may have changed, but the desire to be the best from Paul and Paula hasn’t. After the first year of opening their doors and from every year onwards, according to Rightmove and other sources, they have been the leading sales agency within the Market Deeping area, last year selling nearly three times more than their nearest competitor. The people at Briggs Residential always strive to achieve the best price for their clients and make their moves as enjoyable as possible.
Paul and Paula would like to give a big thank you to the past teams who have worked for
Briggs Residential, as they couldn’t have done it without them. They are very proud of the present team of Matthew, Camilla, Philippa, Lizzie, Lisa and Emma and, having won many awards over the years, their mission will always be to offer the best service to clients and customers and always be the number one agent within the Market Deeping area.
Paul and Paula would also like to thank all their past clients and customers who have walked through their door or contacted them over the last twenty-five years. It has also been great to have repeat business, and they really appreciate all the recommendations and reviews that they have received.
Paul looks forward to many more years of helping people find their dream home and so, if you are thinking of moving in the future, make Briggs Residential your first choice.
Remember, no other estate agent within Market Deeping has more experience of the Deepings’ property market than Briggs Residential.

The first section of Bridge Street leading from the junction with Horsegate towards the centre of Deeping St James, used to be called Rotten Row. It was very narrow and described as a great hindrance to horse-drawn traffic.

The only way to double its width from an inadequate four metres was to pull down adjoining thatched cottages on the triangle of land between the Row and Horsegate. Parish councillors calculated the cost of road improvements, including buying the property to be demolished, and in November 1901, Kesteven Council agreed to pay half, providing the balance was raised locally. Businesspeople and wealthier residents made contributions, and the following year Rotten Row was no more. Newly widened Bridge Street was completely resurfaced, ready for the era of motorised vehicles.
Some of the land where cottages had stood was used for allotments, and it was suggested the remainder could be converted into a recreation ground, but in 1905 a corrugated-iron hall was erected on the site by the Salvation Army. It could seat 250 people, and the Salvationist movement became popular locally. On Saturday nights, their small band played in the

Market Place, and they collected donations by encouraging people to throw pennies on to the drum.
After the Salvation Army moved elsewhere, Peterborough Co-operative Society built a store in place of their hut, and an opening ceremony was held in March 1916. There were already four family-run grocers in Bridge Street and three in Church Street, together with several bakers, but the Co-op’s arrival was celebrated. A public tea was held in the Bell Inn, followed by a speech about the Society and a concert including humorous songs. The store was a fixture in Deeping for more than sixty years, and its site at the road junction became known as “Co-op Corner”. By the time of the 1950s photograph, the Central Garage was trading on the opposite side of Horsegate, dealing in Morris, Wolseley, Riley and MG cars.

After supermarkets became popular, the Coop opened a Rainbow superstore off Godsey Lane in 1979, in place of the Deeping St James shop. Radio and TV personality, Terry Wogan made an appearance on the first day to draw crowds, and customers spending more than £10 were given a free chicken. The old Co-op store built of yellow brick was used for other businesses and currently offers funeral services, with the dental practice in modern premises behind.
In recent years, the Rainbow superstore closed, and the Co-op returned to its roots by downsizing premises and moving back to the junction of Horsegate on the former Central Garage site.

Did you know that half of UK crime is cybercrime and fraud? However, a new platform for reporting these crimes, ‘Report Fraud’, was launched recently, replacing ‘Action Fraud’. It is a free, easy-to-use service where users can not only report a suspicious phone call, text message, social media or website, but offers a way to report suspected fraud.
Reporting online is quick and easy and Report Fraud advisors are available 24/7 to offer help and advice. Reporting cybercrime and fraud to Report Fraud ensures that the correct procedures are followed and it means that you will receive a ‘Crime Reference Number’.
Remember that fraud is a serious crime. Fraudsters are often part of serious organised criminal gangs, who use the money to fund other crimes such as human trafficking, illegal firearms trade and terrorism.
Key strategies to protect yourself against fraud:
• Stop, think, protect: Take a moment to pause before acting on requests for money or information; only criminals rush you.
• Be sceptical: If an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is.
• Verify independently: If you receive a suspicious message from a known entity (like a bank), hang up or close the email, then contact them directly using a trusted phone number or website.
• Social media fraud: Do not click directly from social media to a website to make a purchase. Using an internet search, ask if that company is legitimate.
• Strong passwords: Use unique, complex passwords for different accounts and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where available.
• Update devices: Keep antivirus software and operating systems updated on all your devices.
• Secure Wi-Fi: Protect your home Wi-Fi network with a password.
• Monitor accounts: Regularly check bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
• Use credit cards: Credit cards can offer better fraud protection for online purchases than debit cards. Freezing your credit file can stop identity thieves from opening new accounts in your name.
• Never send money: Don't send money to people you don't know or trust.
The Report Fraud website is full of fantastic upto-date information and advice – see www. reportfraud.police.uk/reporting-a-fraud/ and take a look at the promo video at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=CpZRbpNxCOM

The 22nd East Anglian Game & Country Fair will take place on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th 2026 at the prestigious Euston Estate, home to The Duke and Duchess of Grafton, just off the A11 at Elveden, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
This two-day event welcomes world class attractions each year and you could win a pair of tickets to visit it for free in our great Discovering Magazines competition (details on the right).
Main Arena displays confirmed for the 2026 show include the World Famous JCB Dancing Diggers –an iconic live performance team, often described as a down-to-earth version of the Red Arrows. They have curtsied for royalty, pirouetted for TV and thrilled thousands all over the world! The team will also be available after each performance to meet the crowd and have photos taken. AND returning due to popular demand, the Horseboarding UK Championships where speed, agility and bravery are all required! Audience participation is encouraged to spur on the competitors and provides great entertainment for all the family.
The Waveney and Norfolk Harriers ‘White Woofers’ hound parade is a spectacle not to be missed! We have a fantastic line up of more free events to watch in the Main Arena and across the show including the much-loved Mid Norfolk Gun Dog displays, Fens Falconry Birds of Prey Displays, Fishing demonstrations with World Champion Fly Caster Hywel Morgan, the hilarious Sheep Show, Traditional Ferreting Demonstrations with Simon Whitehead, Live Craft demonstrations and much more!
Have a go at a range of country activities like clay shooting with John Bidwell’s High Lodge instructors (or enter the forty-bird shooting competition for men, women and juniors).
There is also a dedicated clay shoot car park closer to the clay line and Gunmakers Row. Visitors can try their hand at fly fishing on the Black Bourn River. Archery, axe throwing and the air rifle range can also be enjoyed. Breckland Land Rover Club will be running an exciting woodland off road 4x4 course. Choose from a classic Land Rover or
Competition Car and enjoy being driven round the course by one of the team!
If your family’s best friend likes the water, then why not enter them into the ‘Have a Go’ or the competition at the K9 Aqua Sports pool, (long jump into water for dogs!).
The family fun pet dog show is also a favourite with our visitors and the vast array of dogs that love to come to the show (so many classes to enter!).
There are more than three hundred shopping stands with a wide variety of products from fashion and footwear to gun makers and fishing products. BASC will be among a number of national organisations on hand to discuss conservation, countryside pursuits and memberships. There are also many children’s activities, pony rides, traditional fun fair, food and drink hall with Game Fair Country Kitchen, where talented chefs from across the East Anglian region showcase their culinary skills. Craft and gift marquees and much more.
If you are interested in exhibiting with us, trade stand application forms can be downloaded from our website. Please do take a look at our show highlights video; encapsulating what a fun family day out the show is, with something for everyone. https://youtu.be/ejPoo3qy9dA
Don’t forget to bring your dog to enjoy all of this on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
