Welcome
to your January issue...
S
o here we go into 2026 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future. On behalf of our hard-working team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2026, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends.
I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an ‘old friend’, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions. Why not just settle down with a drink and relax with that ‘old friend’ and enjoy our offering this month? All the very best for 2026!
Claire x
Winter is still well-established, but spring is on the horizon – it sometimes feels however that that horizon gets further and further away with each visiting storm rampaging through! Much better weather for a roasting “down under” though – a pity it’s our cricketers getting roasted (in ‘Starc’ contrast to their Aussie hosts!) Still, the Six Nations rugby tournament is barely weeks away … and it is our footy/rugby season when all’s said and done! Finally, a couple of crackers to start the new year merriment: •
n apple a day keeps the doctor away. At least it does if you A throw it hard enough, with a good aim.
•
s I get older, I remember all the people I have lost along the A way – shouldn’t have been a tour guide I suppose.
Enjoy the read and have a happy, healthy 2026.
John

Slide, Climb, Plan: Will-Writing Made Easy for Parents (Childcare Included!)
A
NATASHA BAXTER Probate Case Handler W&P Legal
s a mum myself, I know how overwhelming the daily juggle can be. Between school runs, work, nap schedules, snacks, and everything else life throws at us, some tasks, no matter how important they are, keep getting pushed to “later.” Writing a will is one of those things we all know we should do, but finding the time, childcare, or headspace can feel impossible!
children the chance to explore, climb, slide, and play in a safe, supervised environment. While they are busy having fun, parents step into a relaxed, no-pressure forty-five-minute consultation where we chat through their circumstances, answer questions, and offer expert guidance on wills and estate planning. It is informal, friendly, and the consultation is completely free, with absolutely no obligation to proceed. And for those who feel ready, we can even take full instructions on the day. (It has been done!)
That’s exactly why we created our Play & Plan sessions at The Yard in Stamford. A unique, community-focused initiative designed to make will-writing accessible, convenient, and genuinely stress-free for busy parents. It is something I am incredibly proud of, both as part of W&P Legal and as a fellow parent who understands the struggle.
After the consultation, parents still have plenty of time to enjoy the venue with their little ones, grab a coffee, and soak up everything The Yard offers. It turns an often-daunting task into a positive, productive family outing.
Here is how it works: families are invited to a ninetyminute soft play session, fully funded by us, giving
Our previous sessions were a huge success, selling out quickly and proving just how valuable this combination can be. Many families were able to begin the will-writing process immediately, giving them instant peace of mind knowing their children’s futures were protected. The enthusiastic feedback confirmed what we had hoped: parents want to get their wills sorted; they just need the right setting and time. Running Play & Plan has shown me how much parents appreciate a simple, supportive approach. When you remove the barriers of cost, childcare, and time, something that once felt overwhelming suddenly becomes achievable. That is why I’m thrilled to announce our next session, taking place in February 2026 at The Yard in Stamford. Spaces are limited, so if you would like to join us, please email meg@wplegal.co.uk to reserve your spot.

WHY DO WE NEED A PROPERTY PROTECTION TRUST?
M
ost people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.
The solution to help protect your estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the
property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

it up to look after her. Following her passing other things came along and it’s only now that I can once again concentrate on making soft furnishing items for local people.
Qualified in Traditional & Modern Upholstery as a Soft Furnisher, Susan O’Hara has many years of experience in making fine fabric items and is skilled at producing a wide range of items from cushions, footstools, and bedlinen through to baby gifts, bags and table linen. Many of these items are now part of Susan’s new Betty Collection but she can also make bespoke items on request.
“I can be very flexible, such as making wine bottle holders that can take one, two or four bottles, they make a nice gift, along with wine of course, not supplied! A favourite of mine are the hand crochet baby booties and bonnet that come with their own bag or the dish carrier, both from The Betty Collection.
She said: “I will make anything for people, from everyday items such as memory keepsakes for a loved one. For example, I once made a tote bag for a lady using her Dad's ties.”
“I’ve already had friends get in touch with requests for fabric work. I pride myself on being professional and a ‘people person’ and am happy to visit new customers in their home.” Whatever your requirements, call and ask; if Susan can make it, she will be happy to help.

Mortgages
January: A Time for Change and New Beginnings
January is often seen as a fresh start, a month for setting goals, making resolutions, and taking stock of life.
B
ut it’s also quietly known as “separation month”, when many couples choose to part ways after the pressures of the festive season. In fact, Family Law firms regularly report a rise in divorce and separation enquiries each January, with UK figures showing around a 15–20% increase in applications compared with other months. (source: Woodfines Law)
While the emotional side of separation can be overwhelming, the practical matters that come with it, especially when a shared home is involved, can add extra stress. If you and your partner have a joint mortgage, there are important decisions to make about the property, repayments, and what comes next.
● Assisting with the sale of the property
We understand that this isn’t just about finances, it’s about finding stability during a time of change. We can guide you through your options with compassion and clarity. Whether that means:
We’re here to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible.

and helping you plan for your next home. ● Advising on how to remove a former
partner’s name from the mortgage or protect your credit profile.
If this January brings big changes to your personal life, remember that every ending can also be a beginning. With the right guidance, you can make informed choices about your future and take confident steps towards your next chapter.

New Year Festival Customs and Traditions Many of the customs of New Year festivals note the passing of time. The Romans derived the name for the month of January from their god Janus, who had two faces, one looking backward and the other forward. The practice of making resolutions to rid oneself of bad habits and to adopt better ones also dates from ancient times. Some believe the Babylonians began the custom more than 4,000 years ago. These early resolutions were likely made to curry favour with the gods. Nearer to home, the nostalgic Scottish ballad “Auld Lang Syne,” revised by the poet Robert Burns, is often sung on New Year’s Eve. Symbolic foods are often part of the festivities. Many Europeans, for example, eat cabbage or other greens to ensure prosperity in the coming year, while people in the American South favour black-eyed peas for good luck. Throughout Asia, special foods such as dumplings, noodles, and rice cakes are eaten, and elaborate dishes feature ingredients whose names or appearance symbolize long life, happiness, wealth, and good fortune. Because of the belief that what a person does on the first day of the year foretells what that person will do for the remainder of the year, gatherings of friends and relatives have long been significant. The first guest to cross the threshold, or “first foot,” is significant and may bring good luck if the person is of the right physical type, which varies with location. First foot traditions are observed, for example, in Scotland, Isle of Man, and parts of northern England. Public gatherings, as in Trafalgar Square in London or in Times Square in New York City, draw huge crowds. Many people mark the new year with religious observances, as, for example, on Rosh Hashana. Buddhist monks are presented with gifts on the day, and Hindus make oblations to the gods. In Japan, visits are sometimes made to Shintō shrines of tutelary deities or to Buddhist temples. Chinese make offerings to gods of the hearth and wealth and to ancestors.

KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE
n the 1900 photograph, an elderly watchmaker stands in the doorway of his jeweller’s shop in High Street, Market Deeping, while three children pose below the sign of the Red Lion public house next-door. Readers may still recognise the archway and the shop’s bow window, but the two storeys above it are no longer there. It was a bitterly cold night in December 1928 when tenants sleeping on the top storey heard flames crackling in their living-room below. At that time, the ground floor was a fish and chip shop where locals recall the fried fish was usually whiting, brought by train from Grimsby to Deeping St James station. The Red Lion had been in business for almost a hundred and fifty years. In the era when barges tied up on the riverbank, men walked through an opening between houses opposite the pub and brought jugs across the road to be filled with beer. It was forced to close in 1909 when the Licensing Authorities decided that Deeping had too many public houses for its population. In the 1911 picture the old Red Lion is the pale-coloured building on the right. It been converted into a private house and was home to the fish shop owners at the time of the fire.
Red Lion pub sign and adjoining shop, around 1900
A policeman was cycling along Langtoft Road just after midnight when he saw the blaze. As the building was taller than average, its flames were visible for several miles and sparks shot across High Street threatening properties there. Deeping firemen drew water from the river with their manual pump and Peterborough’s volunteer brigade was also called out to stop the fire from spreading, while residents gathered in the street. Tenants above the fish shop lost all their possessions but escaped unharmed. The former pub and nearby buildings were saved, but the shop and its upper rooms were gutted. Instead of re-constructing all three storeys, only the ground floor shop was restored, resulting in High Street’s tallest building becoming the shortest, with a sloping front wall. Fish and chip frying continued, and during World War II when fresh fish was scarce, people used to queue outside for an hour. Following the proprietors’ retirement in the 1950s, Deeping’s fish and chips have been supplied from other, more spacious premises. The small lock-up shop became a betting office and more recently was used by veterinary surgeons. It is now an appropriately named a “wee barber shop”.

Meanwhile, the ancient Red Lion stands empty and boarded up. In its heyday it had its own brewhouse, granary, stables and an orchard. A later resident declared it was definitely not haunted and had a friendly atmosphere.

Five Decades of Friendship for Local Deeping Group
T
he Deepings Friendship Club is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. We believe that it was started by Efrys Jones, initially for older disabled members of the community. His wife, Olive, volunteered at the club for many years. The club started as part of ‘Disability Lincs’ charity but this closed early this century. We meet monthly in Exeter Close, Deeping St James, and members enjoy the chance to listen to interesting speakers, enjoy a friendly chat and trips out. Afternoon tea is provided by the local Tangent group and the Round Table and always much appreciated. Membership is open to people from the local area and, in the past, when necessary, transport to and from the club was provided by Shaws Coaches which enabled more people to attend. New members are always welcome, and we
would like to send best wishes to everyone who helps us to continue. For more details, please call Carol Precey on 07712 694 544.
