Welcome to your October issue...
I
t’s been an exciting month for our Discovering Magazines team as the first issue of our latest title, Discovering Chatteris, finds its way into the homes and businesses of this small, friendly Cambridgeshire market town.
No sooner have holiday things been stored away and new school shoes and uniforms ‘broken in’, than we now turn to local schools and their Open Days for next September’s potential intake! If you are looking to give up smoking, “Stoptober” is the campaign for you and so much help is available by visiting websites such as www.campaignresources.dhsc.gov.uk/campaigns/stoptober-2026 With the money you’ll have saved, treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en, October 31st. Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we ‘lose the hour’ on Sunday, October 25th.

You know when summer has well and truly ended when the adverts appear on TV for the new programmes that are about to start to see us through the autumn and winter months. Having served up mainly dross during the recent scorching summer, the terrestrial and satellite channels are about to bring out their big hitters as they know that many of us will now be firmly ensconced at home during the dark evenings. It only seems like yesterday when the daylight seemed to last forever but the reality is that British Summer Time ends on Sunday, October 25th. I actually like this time of year as I enjoy the changing landscape and colours of the season, but the prospect of a long winter fills me with dread. Still, I will be bravely facing it with my trusty TV control in hand and planner packed with my favourite programmes…

Your Garden
T
SPONSORED BY THE SHED SHOP
here’s still plenty to do this month, including harvesting late crops, planting for next year and improving the soil.
The most important job, when beds become vacant, is improving your soil. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil lays the foundation for thriving plants, abundant harvests, and a vibrant ecosystem. Adding organic matter like manure or leaf mould helps with the soil structure and slowly releases nutrients. It also enhances the soil’s capability to retain water and air- crucial for good root development and uptake of nutrients. Fresh manure should not be used until it has been composted and never put fresh manure around edibles. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now. although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them. Potatoes should be stored in paper or jute sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free environment Carrots can be stored by spreading a layer of sand in a box and laying them on the sand, avoid them touching, and then cover them completely with another layer of sand, repeat until the box is full and then cover. You can also successfully keep root vegetables, except potatoes, in the ground by covering the roots with a layer of straw to protect the plants from frost. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.
• Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. • Sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket! Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Check the condition of last year’s fleece, cloches and winter protection so that you can plan for any cold spells that may be imminent. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.
Happy gardening!

ACAS CODE CHANGES: WHAT EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW
conversation could soon be worth more than a formal procedure. Acas is consulting on a significant update to its Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures, with a much stronger focus on resolving workplace concerns early and informally. The consultation opened on July 30th, 2026 and closes at 11.59pm on September 23rd, 2026. The revised code is not yet in force, so employers should continue to follow the existing 2015 code for now.
So, what's changing?
The proposed code encourages employers and workers to consider whether a workplace concern can be resolved informally before moving to a formal disciplinary or grievance procedure. That might mean an early conversation about conduct or performance, agreeing what needs to improve and putting appropriate support or review arrangements in place. It will not be appropriate in every situation. Serious allegations and matters requiring formal investigation will still need a formal process.
The draft also proposes:
Clearer investigations: investigations should be objective, reasonable and proportionate, with the investigatory stage focused on gathering facts rather than taking disciplinary action. Less automatic suspension: employers should consider whether suspension is genuinely necessary, keep it under review and document why it is proportionate. A more practical approach to grievances: employees would be encouraged to provide a short, clear written explanation of their concern and, where possible,
say how they would like it resolved. Employers should not reject a grievance simply because every detail has not been included at the outset. More flexibility around accompaniment: the statutory right to be accompanied at qualifying disciplinary and grievance meetings remains unchanged, but employers are encouraged to consider allowing a companion in other meetings where this could help resolve an issue or avoid unlawful discrimination. Greater recognition of mediation: mediation and facilitated conversations would be expressly recognised as voluntary and confidential ways of resolving suitable workplace concerns.
Why does it matter?
The Acas code is not legislation, but employment tribunals must take it into account in relevant cases. In certain circumstances, compensation can be increased or reduced by up to twenty-five percent where there has been an unreasonable failure to follow the code. If the proposed changes are introduced, employers may increasingly need to show that they considered whether an informal approach was appropriate before starting a formal process. For now, there is no need to rewrite every policy. However, employers should consider reviewing their disciplinary and grievance procedures, training managers to spot opportunities for early resolution, checking suspension and investigation processes, and identifying suitable mediation resources. For advice, the Vine Law Employment Law team would be happy to help. You can call (01945) 898090 or (01353) 240079, or email hello@vinelaw.co.uk

Is Your Legacy Well-Prepared? Understanding Inheritance Planning By Ashlie Barnard When it comes to planning for the future, inheritance is often something that’s left to the backburner. But if you want to ensure that your wealth is passed on to loved ones in the best possible way, it’s important to take a closer look at inheritance planning. Inheritance planning isn’t just about drafting a will; it’s about understanding the bigger picture – how your assets will be transferred, the impact of Inheritance Tax, and how to protect your family’s financial future. Without the right planning in place, your estate could be exposed to unnecessary costs, and your loved ones might not inherit what you intend. At Nene Financial Planning, we focus on helping people in March navigate the often complex world of inheritance planning. We take the time to understand your goals and ensure your wealth is transferred in a way that reflects your wishes. It’s not about pushing financial products, but about creating a plan that delivers the right outcomes for you and your family. If you haven’t looked at your inheritance plan in a while, now’s the perfect time to have a conversation.
22
What our clients say: “The information and advice that Ashlie gave me was exceptional. She was really patient, answering all my questions and was happy to explain the figures more than once until I had fully understood them. Following my meetings with Ashlie, I came away much better informed and would definitely recommend her to friends and family.” “We spent a very useful morning with Ashlie as we made plans for the future of our family farm – she really knew her stuff and was able to give us plenty of advice about the different options open to us. We were very impressed and reassured. We look forward to working with her as we move on with the next stage of our future proofing.” “Ashlie and her team were helpful and professional throughout the whole process. The information was extremely helpful and we will be using their services again in the future.” If you have a ‘when can I? or ‘how can I?’ question, then get in touch with our friendly team in complete confidence on (01354) 278088 or book online at www.nenefinancial.co.uk

WHAT’S INSIDE A COMPUTER? PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE
T
o begin, it’s not as complicated as you think! Like every well-oiled machine, computers are made up of different components, each one performing their own job or function, but which connect and work together to process information, run programs, and store your data. There are four main components: The Motherboard is a large, printed circuit board, whose job is to connect all the devices on your computer to each other. Everything inside and outside of the PC (screen, speakers, printer, external drives etc), connects to the motherboard and through the motherboard, to every other component. The lines you see on a motherboard are very fine copper wires, some of which carry power for the components that they’re connecting to, others carry data signals around the computer. It’s these wires that allow the various parts of a computer to communicate with each other. If you follow the wires, you’ll see that they head towards: The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brains of the machine which runs all the programs on your PC, including Windows. All the other parts of a computer communicate
The minimum RAM recommended for basic computing is 8Gb
through the CPU and are connected to it via the motherboard. Rather like the human body, where everything is connected to the brain through the central nervous system. It is mounted onto the motherboard in a socket. Most of the time it’s simply plugged in, but occasionally it’s soldered into place. There are two main manufacturers of CPU - Intel and AMD. Ryzen 3 or Intel i3 are midtier processors and what we would recommend. Anything above Ryzen 5 or Intel i5 processors are found in more powerful PCs. Random Access Memory (RAM) provides the space in which the CPU works – it is NOT where data is stored (this is called ‘storage’ – more on that further on). The CPU has to process everything you see on screen, and since this is VAST amount of data, it offloads it into the RAM. Think of RAM as being a desk. You’ve got a dozen folders open at the same time, and as you can’t balance them all on your knee at the same time, you’d need a desk on which to lay them out.
The Hard Drive is the component onto which all your files (documents, pictures, music etc.) are saved. This is the ‘storage’ part (i.e. the quantity of data the computer can store). The hard drives on all modern laptops and PCs are Solid State Drives (SSD). They save data using flash memory rather than the older spinning disks with moveable parts. Since an SSD has no moving parts, it can open files, load programs and boot up a computer far more quickly. Even better are M.2 SSDs, which are smaller and between 10 to 20 times faster than classic 2.5” SATA SSDs. The minimum recommended Hard Drive size is 128Gb. However, a 256GB SSD gives you far more breathing space There are of course secondary components inside a computer, such as the video/graphics card, sound card, network card etc. We’ll look at the functions of these components in next month’s article.

FOOD WASTE RECYCLING STARTS
Households across Fenland are now filling their food waste recycling caddies with 44 tonnes recycled in first week of service.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION ON HOLD The Government has announced that its national Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) programme and timetable is on pause and under review.
Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Angela Rayner has confirmed in Parliament that ministers will review plans for LGR, following updated and privileged legal advice. An announcement on the future of local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough had been expected this month, with proposed new unitary authorities expected to replace current district, city and county councils in April 2028. As part of the review, the Government has confirmed that local elections will go ahead in May 2027 based on existing council boundaries so normal Fenland District Council elections will take place next year. The review includes decisions on reorganisation in Essex, Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk being withdrawn in light of new legal advice. Plans for fourteen further areas announced in July 2026 will also be reviewed, alongside the two areas yet to be confirmed – Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and West Sussex. At this stage, no timeline has been set for when the review will conclude or what future proposals for Cambridgeshire may look like. 30

Fenland District Council has started its first food waste collections after delivering more than 90,000 caddies to over 45,000 homes across the district, together with a roll of indoor caddy liners and an instruction leaflet. Cllr Steve Tierney, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for waste and recycling, said: “Our food is for eating, not for wasting, but every meal leaves a little something behind – and when it’s recycled, it can do something remarkable. It produces energy to power homes and businesses, and fertiliser for our farmers. “Residents will notice the benefits at home too. With weekly collections, there’ll be more room in your green bin and fewer smells as food will no longer be sitting in your green bin for longer periods.” If you’ve not received your food waste caddies, email foodwaste@fenland.gov.uk or call (01354) 654321 to arrange delivery. You can find more information on the service, including FAQs, what goes in the caddy, and how food waste is recycled, at: fenland.gov.uk/foodwaste

When Taking Money from Your Company Can Become a Tax Problem Ben Beech For many owner-managed businesses, the line between personal and company finances can sometimes become blurred. A quick transfer to cover a household bill, paying for a family holiday on the company card, or withdrawing money when cash is tight may seem harmless at the time, but these transactions can create unexpected tax issues if they’re not dealt with correctly.
Furthermore, where a director has borrowed a significant amount from their company and the loan isn’t repaid promptly or is made on favourable terms, HMRC may treat it as a taxable benefit, resulting in an additional personal tax charge. Unfortunately, it is not as straightforward as simply writing off the balance either as this too can bring with it a whole host of personal tax implications.
When money is taken from a company that isn’t salary, a dividend, or a reimbursement of a genuine business expense, it is typically recorded through a Director’s Loan Account (DLA). In layman’s terms, this is a running balance between a director and their company. If a director takes more out than they have put in, they effectively owe money back to the business.
DLAs are becoming an increasing area of focus for HMRC who are putting DLAs under the microscope as part of a wider effort to tackle errors and improve compliance amongst owner-managed businesses. As HMRC gains access to more digital information, transactions between directors and their companies are receiving greater scrutiny than ever before.
Many directors are surprised to learn that an overdrawn Director’s Loan Account (where the director owes money back to the company) can have real financial consequences. If the loan remains outstanding more than nine months and one day after the company’s accounting year end, the company may be required to pay a temporary corporation tax charge equal to 33.75% of the outstanding balance if the loan was made between April 2022 and 5 April 2026 or 35.75% for loans advanced on or after 6 April 2026.
The good news is that most issues can be avoided with proper planning and record-keeping. Understanding the difference between salary, dividends and loans, and regularly reviewing your Director’s Loan Account before the company’s year end, can help prevent unexpected tax charges and costly mistakes.
While this tax can subsequently be reclaimed once the loan has been repaid, the repayment is not immediate, meaning the company could be left out of pocket for a considerable period. For growing businesses, this can create an unexpected strain on cash flow.
Get In Touch If you’re unsure about your position, seeking professional advice early from the team at Whitings LLP can often save both time and money in the long run. A quick review today could help avoid an unexpected tax bill tomorrow.

BETTER MARKS FOR SCHOOLS
P
By Steve Barclay MP
rogress sometimes comes slowly. Yet when it comes it can be clear cut. That is the case with the independent, and highly respected, international assessment of maths and reading ability in schools (known as the PISA ranking).
Every three years, this study compares the educational standards of different countries. The most recent report shows significant improvement in England – from 25th in reading and 27th in maths in 2009, to internationally being ranked ninth in reading and tenth in maths in 2026. This is in marked contrast to Scotland – which dropped from 15th to 22nd in reading and 21st to 31st in maths over the same time period, and Wales which now sits at fortieth internationally for reading and 42nd in maths in the same international rankings. This staggering contrast in outcomes reflects the Conservative Government’s education reforms introduced after 2010 in England, which were blocked in Scotland by the SNP and in Wales by Labour. Progress has also been evident on another issue, with the prosecution now announced of those responsible for a serious pollution incident near Whittlesey in September 2024, which killed around one thousand fish. It is an issue I have raised repeatedly in Parliament, followed up in my meeting with the water minister, and with the Environment Agency directly. So, I welcome that they have now confirmed they will be prosecuting Anglian Water for this major pollution.
In contrast to this welcome news, the reports emerging from local health leaders continue to cause alarm. It has now been confirmed that a review was started in July 2026, which is due to report in October, looking at health services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn. Media reports suggest significant cuts are being considered, including the possible removal of intensive care, the downgrading of A&E to a nurse‑led Minor Injuries Unit, and threats to maternity services. The day after the reports were made public, I had an urgent meeting with the Chief Executive, Professor Dwyer who is responsible for the QEH, King’s Lynn and overseeing this review, and made clear both my opposition and that of the wider community. Coming on top of recent cuts at the North Cambs Hospital site – where I revealed from research that more than a quarter of treatments were reduced in the past year – it is understandable that many people are alarmed. I will continue to make clear these concerns. Finally, I continue to raise the concerns of motorists with Cambridgeshire County Council regarding the shocking state of local roads. Benwick Road is one of many local examples – we had to get our tape measure out to measure the cracks because they were so wide! Whilst the county council tell me the hot summer has exacerbated the problem, the real issue is their prioritisation of roads in Cambridge and south Cambridgeshire. I will continue to highlight this issue to them – including the risk to motorcyclists – given the dangers and damage caused by the terrible state of local roads.
If the Government u-turning on a retrograde step counts as progress, we have also seen positive movement on local government reform. These botched reforms were deeply unpopular locally, as it risked Fenland being saddled with Peterborough City Council’s debt, and the potential loss of free local car parking. The Government announced in Parliament last month that the reform has been scrapped – at least for now.

* DIARY DATE* Crab Apple Malus sylvestris
Our Annual General Meeting will take place at 7pm on Friday, October 23rd in the Scout Hut, Mill View (just behind Sainsbury’s, beside the delivery entrance).
By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group
W
hen we planted Gault Wood in 1994, we set twenty-five Crab Apple trees… allegedly! This is because they grew from seed found in real crab apples. Unfortunately, no one can control the behaviour of pollinating insects and who knows what apple tree the insect visited before it visited the crab apple. We have some large ‘crab apples’ in Gault Wood that are crisp and quite tasty. I dare say every one of us has thrown an apple core into some bushes thinking some little creature could finish the last few bits, but they probably don’t. Roadsides and railway lines are lined with apple trees that have grown from seeds in apple cores thrown out of the window of a passing vehicle. Every pip that grows will produce a slightly different apple and the more different seedlings that grow, the more it dilutes the gene pool of wild crab apples. We do have some crab apple trees in Gault Wood that produce tiny, hard, bitter apples, but who knows if they are genetically correct. Even though they are very bitter, crab apples make good jams, jellies and even wines. The pectin content is very high so a little a crab apple added to strawberries will make good jam that sets quite well. The original wild crab apple is a shrubby tree, seldom reaching a height of more than 30ft (9m) and the name crab came from the Norse word ‘skrab’ meaning shrubby. The leaves are alternate and oval with a pointed tip and are smooth on the underside, not hairy like cultivated varieties. Crab apple trees used to have thorns, but growers of cultivated apples have bred this out of them. I must confess to having not searched the branches of the trees in Gault Wood to see if any have thorns. The crab apple is the ancestor of all the cultivated varieties we enjoy today. Knowing that none of these varieties will grow true from seed they are all propagated by grafting and the crab apple provides the rootstock for them all. 42

Crab Apples
The Bramley seedling was originally grown in Nottinghamshire between 1809 and 1815 and every single Bramley Apple tree that we have today is a clone of that single plant. Over many years, horticulturalists have developed rootstocks that are less vigorous, so the grafted trees do not become tall and uncontrollable. This makes apple picking much easier and safer. Grafting has become quite sophisticated and more than one cultivar can be grafted onto one rootstock, so a small garden can grow different apples on one plant that can even be grown in a pot. Next Gault Wood Work Parties are Saturdays October 3rd and November 7th at 10am. If you'd like to support our work at the wood as a volunteer, please contact the Woodland Trust using this email: volunteering@woodlandtrust.org.uk Alternatively, you might like to support the Nature's Calendar project, which focuses on phenology, which is the study of plant and animal reaction to climate change. MORE THAN JUST WEIGHT LOSS:
A Slimming World group where everyone is welcome
T
hinking about losing weight, getting healthier and feeling better about yourself?
There has never been a better time to take that first step – and you don’t have to do it alone. With more than five years’ experience as a Slimming World Consultant, I know that successful weight loss is about far more than what happens when you step on the scales. I spent two years running a Slimming World group in Peterborough before transferring to my current group in March, where I have been delighted to welcome new and existing members from across the local community. My own journey is a huge part of why I do what I do. I have personally lost three-and-a-half stone with Slimming World, and I’m still on that journey today, maintaining my weight and continuing to make healthy choices. I understand the highs, the challenges, the good weeks and the weeks when things don’t quite go to plan – because I’ve lived it myself.
My commitment to helping members achieve their goals has also been recognised by Slimming World. I have achieved Gold Consultant status, as well as the prestigious Diamond and Diamond recognition on nine occasions – awards that reflect the success and commitment of a consultant and their group. But perhaps the achievement I’m proudest of is seeing the incredible results our members achieve. For the second year running, our group has had a member reach the final of Slimming World’s prestigious Man of the Year competition at head office – an incredible achievement. Our group is also proud to welcome people with a wide range of individual needs and circumstances. We currently run five sessions every week, making it easier to find a time that works around modern life. They are held every Wednesday at 2nd March Scout Hut at 7.30am, 9am, 10.30am, 5.30pm and 7pm.

ELWYN HOUSE, MARKET PLACE
E
By Jennifer Lawler
lwyn House, a fine Grade II listed Georgian building, was built c1830 of yellow gault brick with a hipped slate roof. There are chimneystacks to the rear wall of the three-storeyed building. The symmetrical façade has three sash-windows of sixteen panes to first floor, two windows to ground floor and three windows of eight panes to attic windows. The central doorway has a reeded doorcase and the six panelled door has a rectangular fanlight. There is a service wing rear extension.1 On the March Museum 1602 map, on the area east of Bridge Grene (Market Place) where Elwyn House now stands, were the houses and gardens of Thomas Marchall and Lewis Pearson. In 1838, farmer Thomas Grounds and wife Maryann and three children were living at Elwyn House with its yard. In November 1843, a fire broke out around midnight in the stackyard of Elwyn House. Fire engines arrived quickly and, thanks to the skilful management and great assistance from the public, the fire was confined to an oat-rick. If the wind had been from another direction buildings would have been lost. Incendiarism was suspected at a time of protest by agricultural workers. Mr Grounds was widely and deservedly respected. One early morning in May 1845, a range of thatched offices behind Elwyn House was on fire. The alarm was raised and the large fire engine supervised by Mr Cory arrived promptly. The fire was confined to one room with minor damage. The cause was accidental.2
By 1851, Maryann and Thomas, farmer of 551 acres and employing twelve labourers, lived there with daughter Ann Aveling and son-in-law Owen. Thomas also owned the granary in Bell Metal Lane (the barn in Elwyn Road). He died in 1857 and the house became the home of his widow Maryann Grounds, widowed daughter Ann Aveling and grandson Charles. By 1871, son Ambrose, Griffin Inn owner and landlord, was living in Elwyn House. 50
D I S C O V E R I N G March
In 1881, Ambrose, now auctioneer, brewer and farmer of seven hundred acres, lived in Elwyn House with his wife Mary Ann.3 Frederick Grounds, farmer, auctioneer and brewer inherited Elwyn House, the granary and brewery, after the death of his father Ambrose in 1887 and lived there with wife Elizabeth and their seven children. In Frederick’s obituary in 1917 he was described as a successful auctioneer and having established March Market thirty years before, with considerably increased business. He took a great interest in public affairs and gave great service to March.4 His son Frederick Donald inherited Elwyn House with its gardens, business and offices. In 1995, Elwyn House and Cattle Market Yard with two acres of land were offered for sale. There were gardens and a number of buildings around a yard including laundry, dairy building, coach house and garage. The Georgian house had seven bedrooms.5 1

WINES FROM THAILAND
T
A Good Choice! hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand and previously known as Siam) is a country in South East Asia. Today, manufacturing, tourism and agriculture are leading parts of Thailand’s economy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally.
Monsoon Valley is a multi-awardwinning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in air-conditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid classic, premium and flagship wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs and are also available in 5-star hotels and restaurants, in Thailand and many countries worldwide, including the UK. Monsoon Valley White (12% vol) wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate sensation, and is excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red (13%

vol) wine has ripe, red fruits for the bouquet and the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé (12% vol) wine will not disappoint. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel and palate, and is a wine that is extremely popular for numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz (13.5% vol) from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. It is fantastic with red meats.
D I S C O V E R I N G March
Muscat (15% vol) is a ‘flagship’ delectation and a very popular fortified dessert wine, having aromatic nasal delights of ripe, tropical fruits, which continue on, for the palate’s enjoyment. I found this to be an ideal ‘towards ending’ or finishing of a dining occasion. When a sparkling wine is required, Monsoon Valley Brut Prestige (11.5% vol) pleases, absolutely. Utilising 100% early-picked Colombard grapes, this sparking production has gained many devotees. I found this wine to be hugely refreshing and to be a perfect accompaniment to fish, salads, seafood, sushi, sashimi, plus white meats and great for celebrations, occasions and parties. For details of all wines from Monsoon Valley Winery, including (easy) ordering and stockists, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk www.siamwinery.com
As always, enjoy!

WHERE THERE’S A WILL… Almost three quarters of adults in the East of England risk leaving loved ones without clear instructions about their final wishes, new research has revealed. A new poll commissioned by charity will-writing campaign, Will Aid has found 71% of adults in the region either do not have a will or admit the one they have is out of date. The research, released to mark the opening of appointments for the Will Aid 2026 campaign, found 60% of people in the area have never made a will, while a further 11% admit their existing will no longer reflects their current circumstances or wishes.

RANSOME, SIMS AND JEFFRIES
A
By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum
fter moving from Norwich, Robert Ransome started a foundry in Ipswich in 1789 with one employee and £200. He had already invented a cast iron plough shear when by chance found a method by which these shears were self-sharpening. This earned Ransome's a national reputation that survived throughout their history. In 1832 they began making lawn mowers and in 1978 were the third largest grass cutting machinery makers in the world. Their machines could be seen cutting grass at prestige golf courses and tennis courts as well as for many local authorities. They pioneered battery powered electric trucks in 1920 and were among the first to make forklift trucks in 1947. In March 1968, Ransome's bought Johnson's Engineering of March and Catchpole Engineering of Stanton. This brought new expertise in harvesting root crops, potatoes and sugar beet. The Cambs Times of September 1st, 1978, had a double page promotional feature for Ransome, Sims and Jeffries of Elliott Road. They were offering an invitation for their first ever open day to anyone who wished to see what happened in their factory. The open day would be on Saturday, September 9th from 2.15 -5.30pm and admission would be free. Special guests would be Clement Freud MP, Don Daglass, Mayor of March, and several town councillors. The open day was the idea of 51-year-old manager Ray Lowe, who had worked at the site with Johnson’s since 1953. He said that although it was only a small factory, it was not 'just a back yard place'. They manufactured machines for sale all over the world. It would be an opportunity for the 110 employees to show their families where they worked and also encourage school leavers to consider a career in engineering. A tremendous variety of displays had been planned for the day. Among the attractions were a pair of Suffolk Punch heavy horses in full regalia demonstrating how ploughing used to be done and static displays including several vintage mowers dating from 1852 onwards. A fascinating display of ploughs demonstrated the changes in farming over the years, from early wooden ploughs, through horse drawn steel ploughs and
58
D I S C O V E R I N G March
Ransome's newest reversible plough. Children experienced high forklift rides and bird's eye views of the surrounding area. A continuous film was shown illustrating Ransome's products in use around the world. The flagship of Ransome's products, first produced in 1974, was the 'Hunter' one man operated, selfpropelled sugar beet harvester. It was almost 10ft wide and over 13ft tall. Operated by a four-cylinder diesel engine, it could top, lift and clean two rows of beet before storing them in a four-ton capacity holding tank. Parts for this machine were made at the Ipswich factory, but final assembly was at March. It was by far Ransome’s largest product and at £20,000 the most expensive. It won a silver medal award from the Royal Agricultural Society. Not all the displays were static, and many areas of the factory were manned as usual and the public were able to see the manufacture of cylinder rollers and cutting blades for grass cutting machinery. Afterwards Mr Lowe said that the event had been most successful and he looked forward to repeating it. It was estimated that between eight hundred and one thousand people had taken advantage of the invitation. This industrial site no longer operates in Elliott Road and has been taken over by domestic housing, but an example of one of Johnson’s potato harvesters is on display at March Museum. Photo: Ray Lowe (left) watches as the first Hunter Harvester is carefully driven out of the factory, watched by Terry Lewis and Rex Ingram
