Welcome to your September issue...
T
he team here at Discovering Magazines are thrilled to announce plans to further extend our offering to the public by launching “Discovering Chatteris” next month. This will mean our “stable” will now have six titles, as we are already covering Bourne, March, Whittlesey, Wisbech and the Deepings.
The success we are seeing right now is due in no small part to the professional expertise of our many contributors, offering valuable insights and advice to you, our readers; our advertisers, several of whom have been with us for over a decade; and finally, our readers, many of whom continue to express (mostly!) favourable comments on what we are striving to achieve – an attractive publication which informs, advises and entertains our readers. I hope you find your September issue fulfilling these aims, as our long, hot summer (the hottest on record!) finally comes to an end and the winds and rains return to let us know that this is English weather after all!

Scrolling through Facebook the other day, an article caught my eye about the merits of four mopeds from when I was a teenager. It immediately took me back to being sixteen, as I had owned one of the models mentioned, a brand-new Garelli Rekord, a stunning looking bike that on a good day was the quickest around. This had replaced my first powered two-wheeler that my Dad had bought me for £30 from an old friend which had an engine in the back wheel and embarrassing baskets front and back. That had absolutely ruined my street cred, so after much saving and nagging my parents, I purchased the Garelli. My best mate also bought one at the same time and we thought we were the coolest kids around. However, my machine had a number of faults... it didn’t work in the rain, the brake light fused every few days and it also (honestly) would occasionally go into reverse! Consequently, on becoming seventeen I passed my driving test and bought a battered tenyear-old Saab 96 car from my big brother. However, my Rekord relationship may have been brief, but it still brings back many happy memories…

ays are shortening and there will be quite a bit of clearing to do on the vegetable patch this month as you harvest all those wonderful crops. Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease so put them on the compost heap, if they are not diseased. Some examples of crops for planting now: • Winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose). • Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October. • Spinach. • Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves. • Onion sets and garlic. • “Green manures.” There are numerous varieties on the market but “Winter Mix” is a good recommendation. These green manures perform three main functions. – They provide compost material. – They help prevent weed growth. – They soak up nutrients that would normally be washed away by winter rains. If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter and early next spring the plants can be dug in before they flower. Those with clay soils will benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig. A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.
• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry. • If leaves are shading the fruit of your tomato plants, remove them now to help the trusses ripen. • Prune blackberries when picking is over, cut out all the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned. • Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in. • Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners. • Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild. Moist weather gives the best results. • Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure. • Lift potatoes if they are ready, usually 18-22 weeks after planting. Wait until the foliage has fully yellowed and died back. Cut the tops off and leave tubers in the soil for 10-14 days to allow skins to harden, improving storage life. Potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting. • Lift onions, which should be stored in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place.

PENSIONS AND INHERITANCE TAX:
P
WHAT’S CHANGING IN 2027?
ensions have long been treated as one of the more effective tools for passing wealth outside an estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.
For many clients, that has meant defined contribution pension funds could be preserved during lifetime, with other assets used first, on the basis that unused pension wealth might pass more efficiently on death. That position is due to change from April 6th, 2027, when unused pension funds and certain death benefits are expected to be brought into the IHT calculation, materially changing the estate planning landscape. The key effect of the reform is that pension wealth will no longer be viewed as sitting at a comfortable distance from the taxable estate. Instead, advisers and families will need to consider pension funds as part of the overall value passing on death. For clients with larger pension pots, this may increase the value exposed to IHT at forty percent, particularly where the available nil-rate band and residence nil-rate band are already fully used by other assets. Estates that previously appeared manageable from an IHT perspective may therefore become taxable, or more heavily taxable once pension value is added to the calculation. This is particularly significant because many modern estate plans have been built around the opposite assumption. A common strategy has been to spend non-pension assets first and leave pension funds untouched for as long as possible, precisely because pensions have often been treated more favourably on death. From 2027,
that logic may no longer hold in the same way. Clients may need to rethink the order in which they draw assets, and advisers may need to revisit whether retaining large pension balances remains the most tax-efficient approach if the primary objective is intergenerational wealth transfer. The reform does not mean pension death benefits will simply be taxed once and only once. In some cases, there may still be an Income Tax charge depending on the age at death and the form in which benefits are paid to beneficiaries. The result is a more complex picture in which the same pension wealth may need to be analysed through both the IHT regime and the pension tax regime. That complexity makes early review essential, particularly for high-net-worth clients, business owners, and anyone who has deliberately used pension funding as part of a succession planning strategy. For advisers, the immediate response should be to encourage clients to review their wider planning now rather than wait until implementation. Wills, nomination forms, gifting strategies, trust arrangements, and retirement drawdown assumptions may all need attention. In short, the planned 2027 changes are not just a technical adjustment: they represent a clear policy shift away from treating pensions as a uniquely protected estate planning vehicle. For many families, that will mean a higher tax exposure on death and a need for much more joined-up succession planning. If you are concerned about Inheritance Tax and your estate, Cath Collins would be very happy to help. You can call her on (01945) 898090 or email hello@vinelaw.co.uk

NEW £MULTI-MILLION RECYCLING CENTRE
Work is going ahead on a new, modern Household Recycling Centre (HRC) for March providing residents with a larger, more accessible recycling facility designed to meet the needs of the area for decades to come.
ESTAFEST SUCCESS…
Estafest once again attracted huge crowds to March with an estimated six thousand people attending the two-day festival. Alongside a host of live bands, festival-goers enjoyed a range of activities including fairground rides, bouncy castles, stilt walkers, and a variety of food stalls, plus a Spitfire flypast. Estafest also focuses on fundraising for local charities and causes with beneficiaries from the weekend's festivities including men's mental health initiatives and March Defibs, which provides support and potentially life-saving equipment to the community. CHECK OUT CHESS CLUB Chess fans are urged to get together every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at March Conservative Club in Creek Road.
March Chess Club regularly attracts twenty players, not only from the town but also from Welney, Chatteris, Wisbech, Holbeach and King's Lynn. The club prides itself on its friendly welcoming atmosphere with the father of one young boy who plays frequently nominating it to the English Chess Federation as the best small chess club in England, which is believed to be the first time a Cambridgeshire club has been nominated. Players are welcome to attend on Mondays from 7pm whether they are young or older, novice or experienced players. There is an opportunity for everyone to play and tuition can be provided. It’s said the £4.68 million facility, to be built on Cambridgeshire County Council-owned land at Hundred Road, adjacent to the existing centre, will make recycling easier and safer for residents. Improved features will include level access to recycling containers with no steps, increased parking, improved traffic flow, dedicated pedestrian and cyclist access, cycle parking and a purpose-built re-use area where unwanted items can be donated and given a second life. The larger site has also been designed to accommodate population growth in the area until 2070, while improved separation between site users and operational vehicles will enhance safety. New canopies will provide weather protection for residents using the facility and for site staff, while also helping to prevent rainwater becoming contaminated by waste materials. The site will no longer need to close when containers are exchanged, helping to improve the overall customer experience. The current Household Recycling Centre will remain open and operating as normal throughout construction, with the exception of a planned twoweek closure in April 2027 ahead of the new site opening, to allow site operator Thalia to transfer operations to the new facility. Residents will be able to use the sites at Whittlesey and Wisbech during the closure period. During construction, residents may notice an increase in traffic due to construction vehicles accessing the site. Cambridgeshire County Council and construction contractor Coulson Building Group will work together to minimise disruption wherever possible. Cllr Ros Hathorn, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council's Environment and Green Investment Committee, said: "We know how much residents value ease of use, and the new facility has been designed with that in mind. It will offer better access, more space, and improved safety.” S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 6

Shower, Walk-in Bath, or Wet Room? We Can Help You Decide Choosing a new bathroom involves understanding your bathing needs, but there is a variety of options to consider when deciding to alter your bathroom.
O
ne option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower; this is suited to those with limited mobility and who struggle to step into a traditional bath. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats mean you can relax and let the water wash over you. Grab rails provide further safety, and they come in a variety of modern designs, so they won’t make your bathroom feel clinical. However, some people still prefer having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats (sometimes heated), quick fill and drain options, and some even have jacuzzi functions to help ease aches and pains.
Struggling bathe? Struggling to bathe? We We can can help.
The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles, with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain, making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers. However, they can be more costly. It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose, but at Living Well Bathrooms by AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look. At AHM we believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable bathing so we’ll always find a solution to meet your needs and your budget. Please call our customer care team on 01778 338151 to request a brochure or to find out more information.

How do you know if you can afford to retire? By Ashlie Barnard When it comes to planning for the future, it’s easy to focus on the big goals - savings, investments, and that dream retirement. But there's one thing that should always come first: understanding your cashflow. Cashflow is simply the movement of money in and out of your life - your income, spending, and savings. It’s the foundation of every financial decision. Without a clear picture of your cashflow, how can you know if you’re on track to retire when you want to, or if you're saving enough for the future? At Nene Financial Planning, we take a client-first approach. It's not about selling you products; it’s about achieving the right outcomes for you. We help you understand your cashflow in detail, considering the often-overlooked factors - like interest rates, inflation, and tax - that can impact your financial future. By focusing on what’s truly important, we ensure your money is working harder for you. If you’re asking yourself, “How do I know if I can afford to retire?” or “Am I factoring in all the right things?” it might be time to start with your cashflow.
18
What our clients say: “Giving up work (and a regular wage packet) is a daunting prospect, more so when it’s earlier than planned. The team at Nene Financial Planning have been so helpful. Ashlie and her team have gone out of their way to explain everything in an easy to understand way that Julia and I are looking forward to retirement.” “We spent a very useful morning with Ashlie as we made plans for the future of our family farm – she really knew her stuff and was able to give us plenty of advice about the different options open to us. We were very impressed and reassured. We look forward to working with her as we move on with the next stage of our future proofing.” “Ashlie and the team really worked very hard and efficiently for us when processing our pension plans. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs to use the services they offer. I feel we’re very lucky to have such a knowledgeable and professional business in our town.” If you have a ‘when can I? or ‘how can I?’ question, then get in touch with our friendly team in complete confidence on (01354) 278088 or book online at www.nenefinancial.co.uk

T
FIGHT FOR LOCAL SERVICES HOTS UP By Steve Barclay MP
he summer has been dominated by a series of heatwaves and this was the backdrop to my recent meeting with the Anglian Water team responsible for the Fens Reservoir.
Significant work is underway, with millions being spent to date and more than five hundred staff working on the major infrastructure programme. My campaign to highlight recent cuts to health services at Doddington Hospital and call for improvements is gathering pace, with the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, who run key services at Doddington Hospital, finally releasing data on recent changes, after a six-month delay. It shows a number of services have been cut, including breast surgery which was stopped in May 2025, dermatology, stopped in July 2025, and ENT, also stopped in July 2025. There was no consultation on any of these changes last year, nor has there been any consultation on any of the changes this year. I have also discovered that so far in 2026 the North West Anglia Trust has paid out more than £1 million in voluntary redundancy for staff. It is not clear how many of these staff were either working at Doddington Hospital or supporting services
there. Yet our district keeps seeing more housing and being told by the health trust that they are committed to Doddington Hospital. It is an issue that requires much more transparency. Another change locally where there is little transparency or clarity is the reorganisation of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s local democracy. The outcome was due to be announced by the Government this summer, but a delay was announced in July without any information on what further information is now being sought by the Government, or when a decision will be published. Fenland must not be forced into a single unitary authority with Peterborough risking resources being diverted away from Fenland, residents inheriting Peterborough’s debt increasing their Council Tax bills, and services like free local council parking being lost. On a more positive note, I have been continuing my long-running campaign, working with the excellent Football Foundation, to improve sports facilities across Fenland. This builds on the new football facilities secured at Wisbech St Mary, Leverington and Estover. The latest additions are a £300,000 new Play zone at Whittlesey which has just been completed and looks great, and another £300,000 Play zone at Barton Road playing field in Wisbech which is about to be constructed. It is great to see these improved sports facilities within the community.

HOW TO CREATE STRONG PASSWORDS (AND REMEMBER THEM!)
U
sing strong passwords to protect your online life is one of the most important things you should do. Passwords for email, banking, shopping, social media and work accounts are the first line of defence against cyber criminals; therefore, abiding by the following three rules on how to create and manage strong passwords, will go a long way to keeping your data and privacy safe. 1.
2.
Go long Passwords should be at least SIXTEEN characters long. Yes, you read that correctly – SIXTEEN characters. There is a difference of hours and days to millions of years for a hacker to guess a sixteen-character password as opposed to a short one. In fact, it can slow them down so much that many will give up. Be unique Using the same password for different accounts is incredibly common – and incredibly risky since it makes all your accounts vulnerable. Once one account is successfully breached by attackers, they will try that same password everywhere else. Even small changes, such as adding a number or symbol,
will not make each password unique enough. 3.
Be random Strong passwords are random strings of letters, numbers, symbols and special characters which don’t include recognisable words, names, keyboard patterns and dates. If the site allows it, add spaces as they make passwords longer and harder to crack.
Moreover, using long, unique, and random passwords means that you shouldn’t need to change them regularly. You should only need to change a password if you think you have been hacked or if you are notified that the account was part of a data breach. Using long, unique and complicated passwords is all very well we hear
you say, but remembering dozens of them is hardly realistic. This is where password managers come in. Not only do they generate strong passwords, but they store them in an encrypted digital vault that not even the service provider can access. The only password you then need to remember (and remember it you absolutely must) is your long, unique and random password for the password manager. Edge, Chrome and Firefox offer free password managers and are considered safe provided your computer is locked with a password. If you still want to use your physical password notebook, do remember to follow the three rules for strong passwords and make sure your notebook is stored in a secure location.

Ready to turn your food waste into something remarkable? Start using your caddies now! Households across Fenland can now start filling their food waste recycling caddies, ready for Fenland District Council’s first food waste collections from Monday 7 September. Over the past six weeks, crews have delivered more than 90,000 caddies to over 45,000 homes across the district, together with a roll of indoor caddy liners and an instruction leaflet explaining how to get started. Cllr Steve Tierney, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling, said: “Our food is for eating, not for wasting, but every meal leaves a little something behind – and when it’s recycled, it can do something remarkable! It produces energy to power homes and businesses, and fertiliser for our farmers. “We know some people don’t have any waste as they use it for pets or compost or other clever ways. But for those that do, the weekly food waste collection is going to give you more space in your bins, keep the flies and maggots away and be a useful addition. “We’re introducing this service to meet Government legislation, but it’s free and optional – and we’re confident those choosing to take part will love it.” Recycling your food waste is simple. Fill your indoor caddy with food scraps, then empty it into your outdoor caddy whenever you like – just as you would with any other bin. We recommend lining your indoor caddy to help keep it clean. Use the liners provided or reuse any plastic or paper bag as all liners are removed at the recycling facility before the food waste is processed. Then put your outdoor caddy out for collection every week, on the same day as your blue or green bin, with the bin handle up so crews can pick it up easily. If you’ve not received your food waste caddies, call 01354 654321 or email foodwaste@fenland.gov.uk to arrange delivery before collections begin. Please note, town centre flats and communal properties are not starting food waste collections yet. Caddy deliveries to these properties will form phase two of the service rollout in the winter. You can find more information on the service, including FAQs, on our website.

ITS A RUM AFFAIR
R
BY TREVOR LANGLEY
um, as an alcoholic spirit drink, has been around for many years, with history showing the records dating from at least the 17th century. The preferences and requirements of rums vary from person to person.
Some rum lovers may enjoy a light or golden-coloured rum, whist others could choose a dark-coloured rum, for example. Flavoured rums have also become widely popular over recent years, for rum ‘devotees’ too. The Caribbean area is very much recognised as ‘where it all started’, for rum productions. Family recipes and varying ingredients, plus the processes involved, bringing rums to fruition, all have an effect, for appearances, bouquets, mouthfeel and palatability – each to their own delectation! Multi award-winning Duppy Share is a London-based company that makes available a range of rums which are hugely impressive. Founded, during 2013/14, Duppy Share is an independent company, focused on making high-quality, authentic Caribbean rums available to the UK and beyond. DUPPY SHARE SPICED RUM (35% vol) is hugely popular and well placed to be amongst the leaders, in the Duppy Share range of Caribbean spirits. I found this blend of 100% Jamaican rums that is infused with ten natural Caribbean botanicals and spices, to have a bouquet which aroused my nasal senses and led to my mouth’s pleasures. Kola Nut, Clove, Ginger and Nutmeg are amongst the inclusions, plus Grapefruit, Orange and Pineapple, for this smooth, very well-balanced, delectation. I am most impressed with this beverage, whether enjoyed simply over ice or with a mixer of choice. Other very popular Duppy Share Caribbean Rums include DUPPY SHARE LEGACY EDITION, DUPPY WHITE, DUPPY SHARE AGED (Produced with 3-year-old and 5-year-old rums), DUPPY SHARE XO (Produced with 5, 8 and 12-year-old finely aged rums) and several more. Take time and pleasure to locate and enjoy your favourite tipple. Very attractive gift boxes (plus other merchandise) are available too. Duppy Share – appreciating, celebrating, embracing and inspiring the true spirit of the Caribbean and its Islands, with fun and excitement included along the way. The very informative website has further details and information, and is highly recommended. Tel: 02077 511727 www.theduppyshare.com
As always, enjoy! 36

A farewell that truly reflects a life...
I
n an age when families increasingly want farewells to feel meaningful rather than formulaic, personalised funerals have become an important part of how we remember those we love. At K E Rolfe Funeral Directors, that personal approach matters. A funeral should not simply follow a set pattern; it should reflect character, values, memories and the small details that made someone unique.
Personalisation can begin with the journey itself. For some families, a traditional hearse offers dignity and quiet formality. Others may choose a horsedrawn carriage, a more distinctive vehicle, or transport that carries a special significance. The choice of vehicle can say something powerful before a single word is spoken, setting the tone for a service that feels personal and considered. The coffin, too, can become part of the tribute. A light oak wood-effect coffin may suit those seeking a classic and respectful option, while alternative
styles, materials or environmentally conscious choices may better reflect a loved one’s beliefs or personality. These decisions are not about display; they are about meaning. What matters most is that families feel listened to. From music and flowers to transport, coffin choice and the shape of the ceremony itself, every detail can help tell a story. K E Rolfe Funeral Directors’ family-run, community-focused approach supports that aim, helping people create a farewell that is fitting, heartfelt and individual. A personalised funeral is, ultimately, an act of love. It gives families the chance to say goodbye in a way that feels right. * DIARY DATE* Garden Spider Araneus diadematus
Our Annual General Meeting will take place at 7pm on Friday, October 23rd in the Scout Hut, Mill View (just behind Sainsbury’s, beside the delivery entrance).
By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group
A
nother very attractive spider that can help cure arachnophobia. The Garden Spider is the most common spider in Britain and very easy to see in late summer and early autumn. Their webs are the iconic woven spiral shape and are built between suitable supports up to two metres off the ground. Garden Spiders vary considerably in colour, from yellow through to grey, with variations through reddish browns in between. They all have the characteristic pattern on the abdomen and stripey legs. The body of the female is 10mm to 18mm long while males are about half that size. They are harmless to humans. The females are the web builders, spinning their elaborate structure, entirely by touch, in half-anhour. She will sit, head down, in the middle of the web with her legs on ‘tells’ through the web. There she will wait for an insect to get trapped in the sticky silk, which she feels by vibrations through her legs. After pouncing on a victim, she will bite it and inject her venom then wrap it rapidly in silk where it will stick in the web until she eats it. Males mature in August or September and females two weeks later. The male will seek out chemical signals on the web that will tell him if the female is ready to mate. He approaches the female with the greatest caution, so she doesn’t feel his movements and add him to her larder. Even if he succeeds in mating, he is not out of danger. If he is very lucky, he may dash off to try and mate with another female. Generally, having mated, the female will kill the male and put him in her larder anyway. Before winter, the female will abandon her web and find a secure place to lay her eggs in vegetation, below a wall or occasionally in outbuildings. The egg sac is wrapped in strong yellowish silk with the shrivelled body of the dead female around it. 44

The spiderlings will hatch from the sac in May. The young are yellow with a tapering black stripe on the abdomen. They will stay in a cluster for about a week before dispersing to start building their own webs to feed. They will moult two or three times before overwintering as juveniles to mature the following year. In southern Britain they can mature in one year. Last year we had one in our garden waste bin where there are always many fruit flies, and she thought it was Christmas. We carefully evicted her before the bin was emptied. Next Gault Wood Work Parties are Saturdays September 5th and October 3rd at 10am. THE COCK INN, 106 HIGH STREET
M
By Jennifer Lawler
arch Museum’s 1602 map shows the east side of High Street divided into long strips extending to the present Elwyn Road, each with buildings at the road’s edge.
The Turnpike Road through the centre of March opened in 1730. As road travel increased, inns appeared along main roads offering travellers a break on their journey, providing food and overnight stay, stables for the horses, and became meeting-places. In March, the 18th century Cock Inn and several other inns joined the earlier Griffin and White Hart Inns. It was the great age of coach travel. The Cock Inn sign displayed an image of a cockerel. Across the country the inn name could signify cock-fighting. The 18th century Cock Inn façade is of gault brick, with a string course between storeys, and red brick to the right-side wall. The original building, with end chimneystacks and slate roof, appears to have been extended to the right. There are two storeys with four paired windows to each storey and a central doorway, all with segmental arches. The ‘extension’ has a similar pair of windows above, a window below and a right-hand door, all with segmental arches.
William Sherhod was landlord of the Cock Inn in 1823-4.1 In 1838 publican Matthew Beckerton lived in the Cock Inn with its yard and more than an acre of land, owned by Nathan Gray. By 1851 Matthew’s widow Rebecca was the innkeeper. The 1840 bankruptcy sale of Nathan Gray’s thirtysix public houses included the Cock Inn. It was sold for £945 to Wisbech brewer and brewery-owner Charles Boucher, who also bought the White Hart and the Wheel Inns.2 By 1873 William Byfield Stratton was landlord and owner of the Cock Inn. In 1880 the surveyor’s report to the council, submitting new owners Messrs Elgood and Harrison’s plan to rebuild the Cock Inn, was

approved.3 It is not known if it was rebuilt or merely extended. Horse dealer Robert Hutchinson was the landlord of The Cock Inn, living there with his wife, family and four servants including two grooms and a mailcart driver.4 Carrier G G Layton advertised in 1889 that his son left Whittlesey with a van every Wednesday for March and would be in the Cock Inn Yard, High Street to convey parcels to Whittlesey and Peterborough. He hoped that the public would continue to support the service, given the strict attention to all orders.5 March Rate Books list landlords John Ingle 1892, Henry Green 1897 and Joseph Henry Green 1901. In 1906 Joseph was landlord and bus driver and the Inn was owned by Elgood and Sons, North Brink Brewery Wisbech. It had accommodation for nine horses and nine vehicles. There were three family bedrooms.6 1

Probate & Estate Administration Ben Beech Probate and estate administration are often spoken about in hushed tones, usually at a time when families are already navigating a personal loss. Yet behind the formal language lies a process that can be as complex as it is important, and one that many people only encounter once or twice in a lifetime. At its simplest, probate is the legal authority to deal with a person’s estate after they have died. But what does that really involve in practice? Identifying assets, settling liabilities, liaising with institutions, valuing property, calculating tax, and ultimately distributing the estate in accordance with a will, or the rules of intestacy if there is none. Each step carries its own technical and practical challenges, and no two estates are quite the same.
others less so. This can leave executors and families wondering what should happen next, and whether anything could have been done differently. For those acting as executors, the responsibility can feel daunting. The role carries legal duties and potential personal liability, yet guidance is not always sought at the outset. Is professional support necessary in every case, or only when complications arise? And how does one even begin to assess that? Estate administration is not merely a procedural exercise; it sits at the intersection of tax, law, and personal circumstance. With increasing complexity in financial affairs and family structures, the questions surrounding probate are only becoming more nuanced.
One of the most common misconceptions is that probate is always straightforward. In reality, even relatively modest estates can raise unexpected questions. How are overseas assets treated? What happens if beneficiaries cannot be found, or if a will is contested? When does inheritance tax become payable, and are there reliefs available that might significantly reduce the liability?

Timing is another area that often causes concern. Financial institutions, HMRC requirements, and legal formalities do not always move at the same pace. Delays can arise for many reasons, some predictable,

MATTERS FENLAND SCHOOLS HEAD TO FIRE STATIONS FOR SAFETY ZONES
Around one thousand youngsters from across Fenland have taken part in this year's Safety Zone. Hosted at March, Wisbech and Whittlesey fire stations, the events transform each station into a hub of learning activity, with the Year Six students rotating through interactive workstations focusing on different aspects of everyday safety. The young people picked up vital information about fire safety in the home, staying safe in and around water bodies, road safety and dog behaviour to online safety, basic first aid including CPR and age-related product safety. The Safety Zone events were launched by the Fenland Community Safety Partnership around twenty years ago, with the aim of equipping youngsters with skills to keep themselves and others safe.

The latest events, jointly organised by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service's Community Fire Safety team and the Fenland Community Safety Partnership, saw twenty schools across Fenland take part. They were supported by colleagues from Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Wood Green Animal Shelter, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Healthy Schools Support Programme and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Station Commander Scott Fretwell, the Fire Service's lead for Children and Young People, said: "We're delighted to host these Safety Zones at our fire stations again across Fenland. They provide a fantastic environment for young people to access important safety messaging and learn in a friendly environment from PIC of professional colleagues. All attendees take away a workbook, ensuring they are able to continue their learning after they leave us."

Saturday September 19th 7pm and 9.15pm • 70 minutes running time, no interval (programme may be subject to change) • Tickets from £27.00 • Book now at: www.peterboroughsings.org.uk
