T

hose longed-for sunny days and warm evenings could at last be here, so let the outdoor fun and games begin!

It seems only weeks since the garden furniture and barbecue were safely stashed away for winter, and now, here we are... ready and willing to brave whatever the elements decide to throw our way. As I write, a torrential storm has just been followed within minutes by the sun. Oh, to be in England now that summer’s (nearly) here! Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month!

One very significant birthday this month (and one which I dare not forget!) sees our amazing Sales Account Manager for our Wisbech and March issues, Paula Kirtland, reaching the grand age of - -! Have a great day, “Big Sister!”

A reminder to you all that June 21st happens to be Father’s Day, so love and best wishes go to my husband, Chris, and father-in-law, Rich.

The stage is set for what is widely acknowledged to be the biggest sporting event across the globe as the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off on June 11th and continues until July 19th.

Now that is good news or bad news depending on your opinion of football – which should probably be called wrestling when played in the English Premier League…

This year’s tournament features a record forty-eight countries taking part including some first-timers such as Cape Verde and Uzbekistan.

England will once again be performing on centre stage at the contest which will feature matches played in sixteen cities across Mexico, the USA and Canada.

No doubt England fans will be in for the normal roller-coaster of emotions, from high optimism to utter dejection, but at least it should bring people together for the next few weeks.

Finally, best wishes to all those taking part in March Summer Festival at West End Park on the weekend of June 12th-14th. Fingers crossed that the weather is kind…

Wines: Some Favourites from Lebanon

L

ebanon is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and has a winemaking culture dating back several thousand years.

Multi award-winning Chateau Khoury winery is in the Bekaa Valley, at the eastern foothills of Mount Lebanon. Their vineyards enjoy perfect conditions for the growing of high-quality grapes, ultimately leading to the resulting high-quality wines.

Chateau Khoury Rêve Blanc (13% vol). This straw-yellowcoloured wine, from Chateau Khoury, has an abundance of flowers and ripe, summer fruits on the bouquet. Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Riesling grape varieties are utilised, to a great advantage, to produce this very popular wine. The mouthfeel is excellent, promoting a superb flavour, to give an extended sensation, for the palate’s delight.

Chateau Khoury Cuvée Ste Thérèse (13% vol) is a very easydrinking wine. Cherry red, in colour and produced using Caladoc and Pinot Noir grape varieties, this fruity wine pairs very well indeed with meats and a good number of other dishes, splendidly.

Chateau Khoury, Château Symphonie (13.5% vol) I found to be a deep-red production, with a powerful bouquet and having a long palate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah grape varieties give the ‘Symphony’ of aromas and flavours. An absolute delight to accompany casseroles and red meat dishes of cuisine.

This hugely pleasing red wine favourite, has many red wine lovers, with its impressive bouquet and long palate sensation.

CLOSURE MARKS END OF AN ERA

Panini’s will be closing its doors on March Market Place for the final time at the end of June.

Barty Alichper has run the popular cafe/restaurant since 2014 serving thousands of customers with homemade delicious food at fair prices.

During his tenure he has also provided support for the local community from raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support to providing free Christmas lunches for those in need for more than ten years and operating a successful film and lunch club.

His work has been acknowledged over the years and he was awarded an honour for services to the local community for his charitable work from Sophie Countess of Wessex and was the recipient of a Fenland Good Neighbour award in 2018/2019.

Barty said: “To our beloved customers, it is with heavy hearts that we announce that our time here is drawing to an end. We are so grateful for the incredible journey we've shared and the unwavering support you've shown us over the years."

The love and appreciation he has shown his customers over the years is replicated by his many regulars.

Customer comments include: “It feels as though Barty has always been here and a part of our lives – we have been coming here for lunches all that time and have always had decent home cooked food at fair prices. We are so sad to be losing Barty and Panini's; he has done so much for the community, and we have been to the free Xmas lunches for the last few years.”

CONTESTED PROBATE: WHEN SHOULD YOU QUESTION A WILL?

C

ontested probate refers to disputes about a will or how a person’s estate is distributed after they’ve passed away.

While many estates are dealt with without issue, there are times when something doesn’t feel quite right and it’s important to understand when it may be worth asking questions.

When should you consider challenging a will?

There are certain situations which may raise concerns about whether a will truly reflects someone’s wishes. These can include: • where a person benefiting significantly from the will was involved in preparing it.

• where a beneficiary assisted with the signing of the will, for example by using their own solicitor.

• where a substantial gift has been left to a carer.

• where there has been a significant and unexpected change from earlier wills, such as a close family member being left out.

These situations don’t automatically mean a will is invalid, but they can justify taking a closer look. It’s also important to bear in mind that where a will has been properly prepared and executed, the legal threshold for challenging it is high.

Inheritance Tax Reforms – Protecting Your Family’s Future Ben Beech For many families and business owners in the Fens, Inheritance Tax could often be managed with careful planning. However, significant reforms introduced from April 2026 have changed the landscape, particularly for those who own agricultural land or run family businesses. If you haven’t yet reviewed your position, now is the time to act.

What Has Changed?

The reforms centre upon agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR), two long-standing reliefs which historically allowed qualifying assets to pass on death, free of Inheritance Tax. From April 2026, the full 100% relief is now capped at a combined allowance of £2.5 million per individual. Any qualifying agricultural or business property above that threshold will attract 50% relief rather than 100%, meaning Inheritance Tax becomes payable at an effective rate of 20% on the excess. Importantly, any unused portion of the allowance is now transferable between spouses and civil partners, so a married couple can together shelter up to £5 million of qualifying assets at the full rate. For farming families, where land values can be considerable, estates above those thresholds that would’ve passed to the next generation free of Inheritance Tax may now face a significant liability.

What Should You Be Doing Now? Primarily, review your current estate plan. If your Will was drafted on the assumption that APR or BPR would shelter the full value of your farm or business, it may no longer be suitable. Consider

meeting with your accountant and solicitor to look at the overall picture, including the value of your assets, how they’re owned, and whether any lifetime planning, such as gifting or the use of trusts, could help to reduce the eventual tax bill. Review your life insurance arrangements; these can be a practical way to ensure your family has the funds to meet a tax liability without being forced to sell land or assets.

Where Inheritance Tax does become payable on qualifying agricultural or business property, it can be paid in interest-free instalments over ten years, which can ease the immediate cash flow pressure on a farm or family business.

Our usual workdays are the first and third Saturdays of each month, starting 9am at Waldersea Yard. We usually finish between 2pm and 3pm, depending on the work and the weather.

ver the last year, BLHRT volunteers have worked very hard to clear the remaining UP line track between Waldersea and Coldham, along with the station house and signal box areas just north of the Station Road crossing at Coldham.

We have also been working on clearing the full trackbed width back to the boundaries, ensuring there is a clear distance at the side of the line to walk along. We also got through to the old Coldham toilet block.

ee Orchid are rather exotic flowers found at Ring’s End Nature Reserve from time to time. They are predominantly plants of chalk grassland and sand dunes both of which are very well drained. The former raised railway line that preceded Ring’s End Nature Reserve would have a lot of railway ballast on the top making it very well drained and producing suitable habitat.

Each flower spike is a single stem with unspotted leaves in decreasing size, partly wrapped around, up the stem. The flowers come in June as a rule, usually three to six individual blooms, and open from the lowest towards the top. The top petals are pale mauve whilst the strange lip looks like a female bumble bee.

This is a pollination strategy; a male will come and land on the ‘female bee’ intending to mate. When the male lands the flower’s two pollen masses will be dropped onto his back. When the bee gets no response from the ‘female’ it moves on to another flower where it pollinates the flower whilst having another unsuccessful mating. This is all a sham because the flowers are now self-fertile. The solitary Longhorn Bee that used to be the pollinator has become greatly endangered and is restricted to a very few coastal areas of southern Britain. Luckily for the orchids they have evolved to manage without the bee.

The seeds that are produced are very numerous but tiny, like specks of dust, and rely on the wind, passing animals or even grass cutters for dispersal.

Seeds require the presence of mycorrhizal fungus in the soil to germinate and develop into plants.

These young plants can take up to six years to produce flowers.

They are perennials but almost never produce flower spikes every year. This behaviour can lead to a brilliant display one year and none the next. Each plant has two tubers under the ground and they take turns to use stored energy to produce a flower 42

stalk. Depending on soil nutrients and condition as well as rainfall and drainage, the plant may eventually produce a new flower spike. Some plants will flower only once and never again.

Despite being quite showy flowers, they can be very hard to spot. The flowers are about 2.5cm (one inch) across and the stalks grow about 30cm (one foot) tall and, in other vegetation, can easily be overlooked. The west wider verge alongside the Ring’s End Sustrans cycle path is worth close examination in June to see if there are any around.

Please do not even think about picking them; it is actually illegal to disturb any wild orchid in the UK. Next Gault Wood Work Parties are Saturdays June 6th and July 4th at 10am.

WADE’S HOTEL

Station Road is a fine mid-19th century building near March Station.

Its appearance has changed over the years. The original building was a two-storey brick house with end chimney stacks. There were three sash windows to the upper floor and two, now enlarged, to the ground floor, surrounding the central round-headed doorway and panelled door. The house was extended to the south with an end-chimney stack, and a sash window to each floor, lower one now enlarged. There is a low 20th century northern extension and a fine decorative porch.

Henry Wade, farmer, landowner and benefactor, died in 1713 leaving the remainder of his estate for the poor with an annual sum for a schoolmaster, for children to become apprentices, for buying heifers for poor housekeepers, and for common lands in March. In 1826 his charity was consolidated with that of William Neale (1696) and others, the rents to be used for a Guildhall (now Cassanos), education and Wade’s bequests.1 In the March Enclosure 1792-1805, the trustees of Wade’s charity held more than fifteen acres along Station Road including the site of Wade’s Hotel, and other extensive holdings including a large area covering the site of Fenland Hall.2 With the development around March 1847 Station, the public house in the then Elm Road, was built and leased to Edward Miller owner of 72-74 High Street with its steam mill and brewery, and other properties. The house lease was sold to William Wild in the 1859 sale following Edward’s death.3 During 1863, the house developed as Wade’s Hotel with its own brewery. William Wild’s son William became licensee in 1874, then St John’s Road, and after William senior’s death Wade’s Commercial Hotel lease was sold to Bullard and Sons’ Norfolk brewery. Described as a substantial

hotel well situated near the station, a good trade had been carried on for many years. It was advertised with the adjoining beerhouse, shop and bakehouse, occupied by William Wild, with stables, chaise house, yard and garden at the back and leased from the trustees of the March Consolidated Charities.4 Members of the Benton family were occupants in the 1880s before Frank Tom Phillips took over the lease. In 1906 Wade’s charity commissioners remained owners of Wade’s Commercial Hotel in Station Road, lease owner Frank Tom Phillips and brewer’s agent George Alexander Seaman as licensee. The hotel could accommodate twelve vehicles and twelve horses. There were five family bedrooms and no guest bedrooms.5 Wade’s Hotel was later acquired by Greene King brewery. Following closure, Wade’s Hotel became a restaurant and the name changed.

THE 3-2-1 BACKUP RULE

REMOVABLE MEDIA Removable media is, for example, an external hard drive, USB stick, SD card, DVD or CD-R disks (although many modern PCs no longer have DVD drives). Backing up using removable media allows you to backup larger amounts of data than cloud storage.

ata loss isn’t a matter of if — It’s a matter of when.

Therefore, having an uberefficient backup plan will save lot of stress (and money) should the worst happen and you lose access to your data.

Data loss (or the inability to access your data) can happen for many reasons: • When copying data from an old device to a new one • Your device is lost, stolen or breaks • The data on your device is accidentally deleted (or becomes unreadable) • A virus or malware erases your data or prevents you from accessing it • Your hard drive fails. Sadly, nothing lasts forever. SSDs have a limited number of write cycles and while most last for many years, their performance can degrade as they age. Older HDDs are prone to mechanical failure due to their moveable parts • When backing up your data, we suggest following the 3-2-1 backup rule (remember Ted Rogers’ old TV programme?): • 3 copies of your data - the original data plus at least two backup copies • 2 different storage types – 2 x removable media or removable media and cloud storage

• 1 offsite copy – at least one backup stored in a separate physical location CLOUD STORAGE Cloud storage is where a back-up of your data is stored on the internet.

Some cloud services offer a certain amount of cloud storage space for free, and some provide version history, allowing you to restore previous versions of a file if something goes wrong. Cloud storage also allows you to automatically create backups, meaning you’ll always have an up-to-date copy of your data.

Cloud storage does, however, require a reliable internet connection to back up (and restore) your data, so it may not be a suitable option if your internet connection is slow/unreliable or if you’re creating particularly large backups. Do make sure you protect your account using strong passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA).

Once your data has been backed up to the removable media of your choice, it’s important that you disconnect it. Viruses, malware and ransomware can automatically move to attached media, meaning any backup will also be infected.

When backing up to removable media, you should set a reminder to do on a regular basis (if your backup program doesn’t allow you to schedule automatic backups).

In addition, if you can, protect your backup with a password in case the removable media is lost or stolen.

Remember, a single backup stored on your computer or an external hard drive is not enough. If your device gets lost, damaged, or compromised by malware, all your data could disappear in an instant.

Following the 3-2-1 rule provides multiple layers of protection and keeps your data secure no matter what happens.

Thousands flock to St George's Fayre Thousands of men, women and children came together in March town centre to enjoy the 2026 St George's Fayre. The event saw more than one hundred stalls, a parade, live entertainment and activities for the whole family.

Cllr Jan French, deputy leader of Fenland District Council and chair of March Events Committee, said: "We think this may have been the busiest St George's Fayre yet!

"We'd estimate there were more than five thousand visitors. It was a great event with lots of positive feedback. We had 135 stalls, a great turn-out for the parade from scout groups to football clubs, as well as the performers.

The St George's Fayre takes place in March town centre each April, on the Sunday closest to St George's Day and is one of Fenland District Council's annual Fenland Four Seasons events, delivered with the support of community partners.

Stall bookings are open for the remaining 2026 Fenland Four Seasons Events, (please note, catering pitches have already been allocated).

The next event is Chatteris Midsummer Festival, this month.

FENLAND COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS TO BE HONOURED

The winners of Fenland District Council’s Pride in Fenland Awards 2026 will be announced on July 1st.

The awards recognise the people of Fenland who make a difference and, in most cases, they are for community champions whose efforts benefit an organisation, community, village or town, but in some cases the impact may be more specific such as a courageous young carer.

Cllr Susan Wallwork, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder with responsibility for the Pride in Fenland Awards, said: “We say every year, and it never becomes less true, that these awards are an annual highlight. They’re all about what is good in the world and in Fenland and every year they show us how abundant that goodness is.

“We have a community full of selfless, caring people, and, at this event, thanks to the nominations we receive, we hear about some of those wonderful people.”

The closing date for the nominations via: www.fenland.gov.uk/prideinfenland was due to be 9am on Monday, June 1st with the winners in an invitation-only ceremony at Wisbech St Mary Sports and Community Centre on Wednesday, July 1st.

IT’S FESTIVAL TIME…

March Summer Festival returns this month to the town’s West End Park with another exciting array of live music and attractions guaranteed to appeal to people of all ages.

The free event is being held over the weekend of Friday, June 12th to Sunday, June 14th and will feature the March Lions Gala stalls, farmers’ fayre, classic cars, MINI Club, wrestling, fair rides and much, much more.

There’s a host of great live music acts including The Baby Seals, Blazin’ Squad and Alan Norris Big Band.

RESIDENTS HELP HOSPITALISED CHILDREN Residents and staff at March’s Aria Court Care Home come together in a show of community spirit, donating a collection of books as part of the Books for the Brave initiative.

The project, inspired by World Book Day, saw the Coronation Close residents take part in a meaningful, resident-led session where they helped sort, wrap, and label donated books.

The activity not only encouraged creativity and teamwork but also gave residents a strong sense of purpose and pride in giving back.

The books – generously donated by staff and local supporters, including Tesco community champion Kelly Riddell – were delivered to children receiving care at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, where they were warmly received by staff and children on the hospital’s Holly Ward.

Chris Lilley, lifestyle activities assistant at Aria Court, said: “Seeing our residents come together for such a thoughtful cause has been truly special. They’ve taken great pride in preparing these gifts, knowing they will bring comfort and joy to children going through difficult times. It’s a beautiful reminder of the power of kindness and community.”

The initiative highlights Athena Care Homes’ values and commitment to fostering community links through care, compassion and how even small acts can make a big difference!

The free sessions, which are open to any player aged fifteen years and over, are being held on the Neale-Wade AstroTurf and are said to be ideal for anyone keen to improve their fitness, learn new skills and meet new people.

DEMENTIA SUPPORT CHARITY DONATION A dementia support group has been presented with more than £1700 thanks to fundraising efforts championed by Fenland District Council chairman Cllr Brenda Barber.

Cllr Barber selected Damsons – a community group supporting people living with mild to moderate dementia and their carers, run by the National Trust at Peckover House in Wisbech – as her chosen charity.

Most recently, she presented a cheque for £938, raised through an afternoon tea held in the council chamber at Fenland Hall, March.

The event, supported by civic dignitaries from neighbouring authorities as well as past chairmen, members and friends from Fenland and beyond, included a flower arranging demonstration and musical accompaniment from Joe Tierney.

This followed a donation of £816 raised at a coffee morning hosted by Cllr Barber in October for council staff, members, invited guests and dignitaries.

At both events, attendees and others donated raffle prizes, bought tickets and refreshments to support the charity.

Cllr Barber said: “It means so much to me to support this valuable cause. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who donated to and supported both events, enabling us to present this funding to Damsons.”

99 YEARS OF BOWLING

In 1927 some members of March Conservative Club started playing bowls on a grass green at the rear of the club for a subscription of six shillings (30p).

In 1933 the players decided to lay a Cumberland Turf green. This went ahead with the old turf being sold to help with the cost of the new green, which was opened in May 1934 by Sir Tyrell Giles.

Ladies were able to play between 2pm and 5pm.

This changed in the early 1970s when they were given full membership.

In 2011 the club decided to maintain the green instead of employing a groundsman. This is still ongoing and thanks go to those involved both past and present.

January 2025 saw an arson attack which destroyed equipment, benches, machinery and sheds, but with fundraising and donations, the 2025 season went ahead as normal.

Finally, if you have read this and want to try bowls, please come to the club on a Friday evening at 6.30pm or contact the main club.

COUNCIL PRAISED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE WORK

Fenland District Council has been awarded a nationally recognised mark of excellence for its commitment to supporting residents affected by domestic abuse.

The council has received Gold Accreditation from the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA), the UK benchmark which recognises how housing services respond to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

DAHA awarded the accreditation following an in-depth, rigorous assessment process, which found the council demonstrated passion, dedication and commitment to adopting and embedding the standards of the DAHA framework.

HOSPITALS NEED A HEALTH CHECK

T

here can be no doubt locally that both Doddington and North Cambs hospitals are hugely valued by local residents. So, when the Government published its strategy for the NHS, stating that it would move more health services into community settings like these, it was very welcome news.

However, new figures I have obtained show that the opposite is in fact happening.

In the last year alone, more than a fifth of patient treatments at the North Cambs hospital site have been cut. Two years ago, more than 70,000 patients were treated at the site. That figure fell last year to below 55,000 – a drop of 22 percent in just one year.

Similar concerns have emerged at Doddington Hospital, where services such as audiology and urology have been stopped. What is striking about both reductions in local health services is the lack of any public consultation or transparency by NHS managers, who, when challenged, have cited workforce pressures or the need to centralise services in larger hospitals to drive ‘efficiency.’

Yet this means residents in Fenland are travelling further, incurring more time and cost. It is the opposite of what the Government strategy sets out. It also leaves facilities underutilised, both at Doddington and at the state-of-the-art £2.1 million Community Diagnostic Centre in Wisbech.

I have launched a survey to gather more data from residents on how both sites are being used and will continue to make the case for services to be protected. If you have not completed this yet, please go to stevebarclay.net/news/ doddingtonhospital

The in-patient contract, which had been in place since 2018 following a successful pilot, ended on March 31st, 2026. On top of this, the Government’s funding increase of just 2% is below inflation, which is now running at over 3%. This has left the hospice with a £1.2 million shortfall this year, as costs for wages, energy, and other essentials continue to rise.

Locally, this puts vital services at risk, including those at the Alan Hudson Centre on the North Cambs Hospital site and the Hospice at Home service, which provides chemotherapy, iron and blood transfusions, clinical nurse specialist support, and counselling.

Many families, including my own, have greatly valued the calm sanctuary and dignity they offer during a loved one’s final moments – so different from a busy hospital ward. I know the importance of Arthur Rank Hospice is an issue that unites people across Fenland regardless of their political support, and I will be working across the community to highlight how important their services are to our community.

Whether on hospices, community hospitals, or events like St George’s Day, Fenland shows the capacity for the community to work together. That is also the case with my annual literacy campaign, Read to Succeed, where, thanks to local business support, we provide a book for every Year 4 student in Fenland to encourage reading over the summer holidays.

This year, we have already raised more than £8500, which will be used to help encourage an early love of reading and greater participation in our local libraries. Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign this year.

Another related issue is the proposed cuts to our local hospice. Last month, I had a briefing in Parliament from the dedicated team at Arthur Rank Hospice. One in six of their patients comes from Fenland, and in the last year alone, more than 540 local people used their services. Yet the Government has cut funding for a third of their in-patient beds.

KENNETH CLIFTON: PART ONE

By Richard Munns on behalf of March & District Museum ormer March resident Kenneth ‘Ken’ Edgar William Clifton was born on February 26th, 1918, in Christchurch, Hampshire.

He joined the RAF in 1936 and did his initial training as an Air-gunner.

Soon after the start of World War II, he was posted to Habbanyia in the Middle East, sixty miles west of Bagdad. Originally called RAF Dhibban, the station was built on the west bank of the Euphrates. It was opened on October 19th, 1936, between Ramadi and Falluja and was a major military and air base for the entire British Empire.

RAF Dhibban was originally named after the nearby village of Sin el Dhibban, in Arabic ‘Teeth of the Fly,’ but was renamed, more appropriately, RAF Habbaniya on May 1st, 1938. The station was a large flying training school in the Second World War, including No 4 Service Flying Training School as well as a transport staging airfield.

In the Rashid Ali rebellion in 1941, the airfield was besieged by units from the Royal Iraqi Army encamped on the overlooking plateau. On May 2nd, 1941, British forces from the airfield launched pre-emptive airstrikes on Iraqi forces throughout Iraq and the Anglo-Iraqi War began.

On May 8th, seconded from his normal duties of flying in Fairey Gordon bi-planes, he was the air gunner of an Airspeed Oxford Mk 1, P8824, on reconnaissance over Ramadi, a few miles west of Habbaniya. The pilot was Flight Sergeant Harry Bratten, with whom Clifton had flown many times.

Bratten had been instructed not to fly below 3000ft for fear of ground fire.

However, he disobeyed orders and, whilst flying about 1500ft, was hit by a solitary bullet which severed an artery and he died within minutes.

Feeling the plane lurch, Clifton left his position in the dorsal turret and helped the observer, a trainee pilot, to move the body. He then, as he was a slightly higher rank than his colleague, took

over the controls of the aircraft. He flew the Oxford back to Habbaniya, having only once before held the controls of an aircraft and having had no formal training.

After going through all the necessary movements such as lowering the undercarriage and flaps, he landed the aircraft safely with no further damage on the third attempt.

For this act he was immediately promoted to Leading Aircraftman and awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, possibly the only non-qualified aircrew to receive the award. The citation in the London Gazette of July 1941, page 3996 stated: ‘This airman displayed great courage and resource.’

Ken later moved to March, residing in Highfield Road. His uniform, medals and flight log books are now deposited at the town museum. Don’t miss next month’s issue when we will continue his story.
