Welcome to your January issue...
S
o here we go into 2026 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future.
On behalf of our hard-working team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2026, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends. I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an ‘old friend’, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions. Why not just settle down with a drink and relax with that ‘old friend’ and enjoy our offering this month? All the very best for 2026!

Welcome to the first issue of 2026. The new year will inevitably come with its own unique challenges but it will also hopefully present some new opportunities for those willing to grasp them. Let’s hope the next twelve months sees local businesses flourish and organisations thrive and prosper. There are many people in the Fens who work hard each week to try and provide a better future for themselves and their families and I wish them all good fortune for the year ahead. Life can sometimes seem rather grim with obstacles seemingly in the way of personal happiness, but there is plenty to be thankful for... we live in Fenland alongside some fantastic people! The Discovering team looks forward to continuing to bring you the best possible magazine each month and I would like to wish you all health and happiness throughout 2026...

it up to look after her. Following her passing other things came along and it’s only now that I can once again concentrate on making soft furnishing items for local people.
Qualified in Traditional & Modern Upholstery as a Soft Furnisher, Susan O’Hara has many years of experience in making fine fabric items and is skilled at producing a wide range of items from cushions, footstools, and bedlinen through to baby gifts, bags and table linen. Many of these items are now part of Susan’s new Betty Collection but she can also make bespoke items on request.
“I can be very flexible, such as making wine bottle holders that can take one, two or four bottles, they make a nice gift, along with wine of course, not supplied! A favourite of mine are the hand crochet baby booties and bonnet that come with their own bag or the dish carrier, both from The Betty Collection.
She said: “I will make anything for people, from everyday items such as memory keepsakes for a loved one. For example, I once made a tote bag for a lady using her Dad's ties.
“I’ve already had friends get in touch with requests for fabric work. I pride myself on being professional and a ‘people person’ and am happy to visit new customers in their home.” Whatever your requirements, call and ask; if Susan can make it, she will be happy to help.

Your Garden
A
fter all the indulgences of Christmas and the New Year, a bit of winter digging can get you back into shape!
Make sure the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially where you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. Other jobs: • Spray all fruit trees and bushes with a garlic winter wash on a fine day; do not spray in frosty conditions. • Prune fruit trees. • At this time of year rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. • Clean up the plot by disposing of all the damaged and rotten crops: most of the overwintering vegetables will suffer if the conditions are wet. Also remove any leaves as these are a perfect hide-out for slugs and snails. • Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds.
8
D I S C O V E R I N G March
• Spread well-rotted manure or compost over empty beds. • Warm up areas of seedbeds by covering them with sheets. • Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. Plant: • Onions and leeks – to give them the longest possible growing season, sow seeds in modules and keep indoors at a temperature of at least 10C. Transplant outdoors in March or April. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer. • Peas – for a very early crop, sow seeds in pots under glass and harden off to plant outdoors in March or April. • If you have a greenhouse, cloches, or space in the house, then now is a suitable time to plant a few seeds ready for the planting-out season. Tomato, chilli and aubergine seeds are a few that can be planted now to give them a good start.
Here’s to a fruitful 2026!

WHY DO WE NEED A PROPERTY PROTECTION TRUST?
M
ost people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.
The solution to help protect your estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the
property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

New Year Festival Customs and Traditions Many of the customs of New Year festivals note the passing of time. The Romans derived the name for the month of January from their god Janus, who had two faces, one looking backward and the other forward. The practice of making resolutions to rid oneself of bad habits and to adopt better ones also dates from ancient times. Some believe the Babylonians began the custom more than 4000 years ago. These early resolutions were likely made to curry favour with the gods. Nearer to home, the nostalgic Scottish ballad “Auld Lang Syne,” revised by the poet Robert Burns, is often sung on New Year’s Eve. Symbolic foods are often part of the festivities. Many Europeans, for example, eat cabbage or other greens to ensure prosperity in the coming year, while people in the American South favour black-eyed peas for good luck. Throughout Asia, special foods such as dumplings, noodles, and rice cakes are eaten, and elaborate dishes feature ingredients whose names or appearance symbolise long life, happiness, wealth, and good fortune. Because of the belief that what a person does on the first day of the year foretells what that person will do for the remainder of the year, gatherings of friends and relatives have long been significant. The first guest to cross the threshold, or “first foot,” is significant and may bring good luck if the person is of the right physical type, which varies with location. First foot traditions are observed, for example, in Scotland, Isle of Man, and parts of northern England. Public gatherings, as in Trafalgar Square in London or in Times Square in New York City, draw huge crowds. Many people mark the new year with religious observances, as, for example, on Rosh Hashana. Buddhist monks are presented with gifts on the day, and Hindus make oblations to the gods. In Japan, visits are sometimes made to Shintō shrines of tutelary deities or to Buddhist temples. Chinese make offerings to gods of the hearth and wealth and to ancestors.

HAPPY NEW YEAR. I HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT 2026 By Steve Barclay MP
n Fenland the year opens with a special event in the form of the Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey, which will be held on Saturday, January 17th, 2026. It is now in its forty-sixth year and will feature more than 250 Molly dancers, musicians, and performers filling the streets. Thank you to all the volunteers whose dedication makes this unique event possible.
The winter months have seen no let-up in the problems caused on local roads from potholes, and I have repeatedly raised concerns with Cambridgeshire County Council. There is now a public database showing what potholes have been registered and when they will be repaired, accessed via the CCC Highways Reporting portal cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roadsand-parking/roads-and-pathways/roadworksand-faults and I will continue to highlight flaws in the current approach which is letting drivers down. In particular it appears that no penalties for poor performance have been imposed on the contractor in the past year, suggesting the contract is being badly managed.
Likewise concerns continue with the ongoing repairs to the Ralph Butcher Causeway which result in motorists facing endless delays. Contractor Jones Bros has once again delayed the completion date for works on the crossing. I hope, as you read this in January, the opening is imminent – or now open – if not yet another deadline will have been missed. In Parliament I chair the Finance Select Committee, and one key objective has been to bring more transparency to how the parliamentary authorities spend public money. Normally it is a committee that meets in private, and a change I have made is to open hearings up to more transparency. More transparency is also needed on the Government’s proposals to restrict the right to trial by jury. For more than eight hundred years since the Magna Carta, it has been a key protection in law that decisions on innocence or guilt are determined by juries, and I am deeply concerned that this will be restricted. Given this fundamental change was not included in the Government’s manifesto, it is imperative that Ministers set out the impact assessment for these changes so we can measure the outcomes being promised.

Nene can change your life By Ashlie Barnard
When I founded Nene Financial Planning it was important to me to offer cashflow modelling to all clients so that you can make life changing decisions without guessing what your financial situation may look like later on. One of the most common questions I get asked is ‘when can I afford to retire?’ Cashflow modelling enables us to put your financial information into our system, project figures forward – taking account charges, inflation, performance and even market crashes and give you an exact date. Moreover, we are able to build in those scenarios that might also be causing indecision such as paying off your mortgage, downsizing or moving home,
26
contributing to a child’s wedding and even assess the impact of serious illness or an early death. All displayed in a helpful and easy to read graph. Feedback we have from clients, is that the service is life changing. Often seeing tears of relief and on the occasions when the outcome doesn’t look quite so good, enables us to build a plan with you on how to improve and change your spending habits or financial holdings to get you closer to your goal. As part of the process, we include our finding service, writing out to all your providers for you so you don’t have to, obtaining the details of your pensions, savings, mortgages, insurance policies, getting a really clear understanding of where you are in achieving your goal. If you have a ‘when can I? or ‘how can I?’ question, then get in touch with our friendly team in complete confidence on (01354) 278088 or book online at www.nenefinancial.co.uk

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY VS DEPUTYSHIP
If you were unable to make decisions for yourself, what would happen?
f you have made Lasting Powers of Attorney, then your chosen attorney can start acting immediately. Without these documents, if you were to suffer an accident or have an illness that meant you could not manage your own affairs or make decisions for yourself, no one would be able to deal with these matters for you. In the absence of a valid LPA, your family or friends, or even a professional, would have to make an application to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your deputy.
Lasting Power of Attorney The Lasting Powers of Attorney must be set up whilst you are able to decide who you want to act as your attorneys. You can give them instructions and directions on how you wish them to deal with matters on your behalf within the documents. You can also decide who ought to act on your behalf if your first choice is not able to assist you. Once the documents have been prepared and signed, they must be sent to the Office of the Public Guardian to be registered before your attorneys can act under them. Currently it is taking about eight-twelve weeks for this to take place and for the forms to be returned. The cost of registration is £92 per LPA but this can be waived or reduced if you are in receipt of certain benefits or are on a low income. If the LPAs are required urgently, you can request that they be sent out immediately that they are registered. There are no further fees in relation to the LPAs once they have been registered.
Deputyship If you are no longer able to decide who you want to act on your behalf then someone, possibly not the person you would have chosen, has to make an application to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your deputy. They will have to arrange for you to undertake a capacity assessment as part of their application. Sometimes a GP is able to do this, but often a professional capacity assessor has to be instructed and this will incur additional costs. They will also have to try to find information about your personal finances which may be difficult and time consuming. It is more difficult now to put together a snapshot of someone else’s finances if they have opted out of paper statements from their bank. Once the application, which can consist of up to four separate documents has been compiled then this must be submitted to the Court of Protection. Their current fee is £421 to consider the application. The Court of Protection can take between twelveeighteen months to consider and grant an order appointing a deputy. Once the deputy has been appointed, they will need to pay a bond in order to act and will have to file annual reports of their actions for which there is a further fee payable. If you would like to discuss either Lasting Powers of Attorney or a deputyship application, please contact Cath Collins on (01945) 898090 or cathcollins@vinelaw.co.uk

Financial Planning for 2026 & Beyond Scott Bishop
The team at Whitings LLP would like to wish you all a very prosperous and healthy New Year, in what will no doubt be a challenging one for individuals and businesses following recent Budgets. Over the last two years, there have been significant reforms that have reshaped the tax landscape. Some are already in force, while others are fast approaching – and unfortunately, few bring good news for taxpayers. With an increased tax burden, proactive financial planning has never been more important. Whether it’s making pension contributions, funding a major capital purchase, or hiring new employees, these decisions require careful thought. These are just some of the areas where we regularly help clients make informed choices. For small business owners with turnovers of more than £50,000 (including property rental), additional work will be required from you to meet the new reporting obligations introduced under Making Tax Digital (MTD) from April 2026. The change will lead to more frequent reporting and a move to digital processes, so you should start planning for suitable software and support now if you have not done so already. The changing business environment also makes it essential to review, or create, a robust business plan.
Key questions include: •
What are your fixed and variable costs and how will these change in the coming months?
•
Do you have sufficient cash to achieve your goals, if not, will you fund the business through savings or seek external finance?
For owners of limited companies, remuneration planning is always a hot topic and this remains the case with an increase in dividend tax rates of 2% at basic and higher rates coming into effect from 6 April 2026. Will you bring forward payments of dividends to capitalise on existing rates? Do you have the reserves and financial means to do this? Or will you look to restructure your remuneration package for the new tax year to ensure you are being paid in the most tax efficient manner?
We’re Here To Help Now is the time to take control – plan ahead, protect your position, and prepare for what’s coming. We’re here to help every step of the way. For further advice on this matter, then please do not hesitate to contact your local Whitings LLP office. Information that features in this article is correct at the time of writing.
A well-prepared plan helps you forecast costs, manage cash flow, and assess funding needs.

wines from thailand:
A Good Choice...
T
hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia whose capital city is Bangkok.
Today, manufacturing plus tourism and agriculture are the leading parts of Thailand’s economy. From the shopping malls of Bangkok, through the fabulous coastal beaches, with hundreds of tropical islands, plus the nightlife and world heritage attractions, culture, history, sports and more, there is something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally. Monsoon Valley is a multi award-winning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in airconditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now recognised around the world and enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs, as well as being available in five-star hotels and restaurants, in Thailand and many countries, worldwide. Monsoon Valley White wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate, and is excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red has good red fruits for

the bouquet and for the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s a rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé will not disappoint, having grapes grown on ‘floating vineyards’ and at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose, with excellent mouthfeel and palate, and is extremely popular, with many, on numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz, from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. This one is fantastic with red meats. For an aromatic, sweet wine, Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine (flagship) “ticks all the boxes for me”. Having Chenin Blanc grapes, left on the vines for several days longer, ensures provision of the added sugars required to produce this impressive delight, which gives a grand finish. These are just some of the wines from the Monsoon Valley ranges. For all details, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk or www.siamwinery.com

Cllr Steve Tierney, portfolio holder for refuse and recycling collection, said: “Our huge gratitude goes to Peter and Hedley not just on behalf of the council but all of Fenland for such long and dedicated service. “Over the years I am sure they have each been guiding lights of wisdom and experience to countless incoming team members and a great support to the whole team. It’s huge credit to the refuse and recycling team that so many of its members find a place where they want to stay and continue to be part of such a vital community function. I know Peter and Hedley will be missed but they can be proud to have been linchpins of that team.” Photo: Hedley Fynn-Brand (left) and Peter Tompkins, with his dog Luna
LONG-SERVING COUNCIL WORKERS RETIRE
Two refuse workers are retiring from Fenland District Council after each serving forty-six years. Peter Tompkins and Hedley Fynn-Brand each joined the council in the year Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister. Peter (63) said: “I turned up aged seventeen and the next thing you know you’re the father figure – or now, more like the grandfather! “It is incredible to think forty-six years has gone past. It’s a lifetime. It’s nice to think I’ve served the local community. It’s not a glamorous job but a lot of people appreciate the work you do. If you like working outside and don’t mind working whatever the weather, it’s a great job, with a great bunch of lads and lasses. It’s who you work with that makes it.” Hedley (64) spent the majority of his latter twentyplus years with the council completing trade waste and recycling collections. He said: “It’s scary really to think forty-six years has gone by. I speak to people and they say I don’t know anybody who has been in a job that amount of time. I never expected to stay with the council all those years but it’s nice to know I’ve been helpful to people.” Peter and Hedley were the longest serving among the council’s approximate sixty-five-strong refuse and cleansing team, where around a third of the team has served for fifteen years or more. 40

CASH BOOST FOR HUB
The March Armed Forces & Veterans Hub has received a £1000 donation from Caldwell Lodge, demonstrating continued support for the local Veteran community. Representing Caldwell Lodge were John Roberts, John Best and David Barkell, who attended the presentation and met with Jeff Walters (RAF, Retired), who runs both the hub and the breakfast cub. John Roberts is himself a veteran, having served five years with the Household Cavalry (The Blues and Royals) before continuing his public service with a twenty-five-year career in the Prison Service. His longstanding commitment to service highlights the connection between Caldwell Lodge and the Veteran community. The hub is hosted every Thursday at Cassanos in High Street, March and provides vital support, camaraderie, and a welcoming space for veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces. Contributions such as this help ensure the continuation of its valuable work within the community. J A N UA R Y 2 0 2 6

Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus
By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group
T
his is the smallest and most regular of the four species of gull that can be seen flying over March. It used to be in the genus Larus but DNA examination has caused it to be moved into the genus Chroicocephalus.
Black-headed gull in summer plumage
Whilst scarcely a day goes by without seeing gulls passing over the town, they very seldom come down to earth except in wide open areas. Black-headed gulls may visit gardens for food thrown onto a large grassy area but are very wary of being enclosed. In summer, they have a very dark brown head but it does look black under most conditions. There is a brown-headed gull in Asia so the black-headed gull was forcibly misnamed. The brown (black) head appears in spring for the breeding season but disappears in autumn just leaving a spot behind the eye and two narrow diffuse head bands. The legs and bill are dark red in summer fading a little in winter. Juveniles have grey backs and pink legs. Their flight is very buoyant and the white leading edge to the wings is distinctive. They inhabit every area of the country often being seen following a plough across farmland. Their diet is varied including worms, insects, fish and carrion and they will live anywhere where there is a good food supply. Rubbish tips are very popular with all gulls. They favour marshy areas and, as colonial nesters, they will take over an area and exclude other species from their chosen spot, usually a small low island. When nesting they are very noisy and quarrelsome. If you are near a breeding colony of black-headed gulls their squawking calls can dominate to an annoying extent. Nesting takes place between March and June according to local conditions; there is only one brood each year. Pairs stay together for life and build a nest of twigs, grass, and aquatic vegetation. One to six pale olive green dark blotched eggs can be laid but more usually two or three. Both adults incubate and when the chicks hatch, they are precocial, which means they

have their eyes open and they are covered in grey and black down. Black-headed gull in They can stand winter plumage and walk soon after hatching but stay around the nest for a week and fledge after thirty-five days then take two years to reach maturity. As each egg hatches the adult will remove the empty shell to avoid attracting predators. Black-headed gulls are conspecific parasites; a female will lay eggs in another’s nest if her nest is destroyed or stolen by another pair. Hello and a Very Happy New Year From
T
Wellbeing Corner...
raditionally it’s that time of year when we start to think about new year’s resolutions and those big life changes for the year ahead. Did you know that UK statistics suggest that up to seventy percent quit their resolution after just one month! Why is that, and how could things be different?
January is often a month where we might still be exhausted from the busy Christmas period, finances are often tighter and with the short days and gloomy weather it can feel for many like a time to hibernate rather than a time to make radical changes. The neuroscience behind Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps us to understand why we are stuck wanting to make these changes but never being able to fully achieve them. Everyone has what I describe as a metaphorical stress bucket. Our bucket fills up with both daily stressors and from negatively forecasting the future – what shall I cook for dinner? Will I find a better job? And all those what if's… when our bucket is full, we are fuelled by cortisol the stress hormone, leaving us feeling anxious, unable to
sleep, often lacking in motivation and unable to make changes.
So how can hypnotherapy help, well first we begin by looking at how we can empty that stress bucket through a combination of Su za nn e positive actions, interactions Westb roo k and thoughts. We also get sleep patterns working more effectively so that we can process the stress in the bucket and regain control over the changes we want to make. Often people come to hypnotherapy feeling like they need to completely overhaul their lives to improve their situation. By making small manageable changes we can build success and therefore motivation towards that goal. Whether that goal is to get more active, manage weight, improve confidence, or reduce anxiety, or often a combination. If you want to find out more about how your brain works and how to make lasting changes, then why not book a FREE initial consultation this January.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year x

Local History

THE WHITE HART By Jennifer Lawler
he White Hart was a centuriesold historic inn in the centre of March. In 1393 during the reign of King Richard II an Act made it compulsory for inns and public houses to have a sign in order to identify them.
The White Hart name was chosen by many inns as it was the personal badge of the King. A riverside inn may have been on that site since the C14 welcoming travellers. The White Hart buildings developed over the centuries. On March Museum’s c1601 map, the plot of Robert Prachie, or Peachie, extended the length of the east side of Broad Street. On the site of the White Hart buildings, around the corner of the present Broad Street and Nene Parade, was a collection of buildings. The c1500s Ship Inn with its ornate ancient beams has been considered to have been part of the White Hart. A 1735 newspaper account referred to a mare stolen or strayed from a pasture in March. Anyone returning the mare to the White Hart Inn would receive a guinea reward and reasonable charges.1 William Watson wrote in 1827 that on the front of the side of the inn facing the river were once square bricks ‘of great antiquity’ imprinted with the letters HEWGARNARMGVTVGJJ – perhaps the builder’s name and his children’s initials. He claimed that there were also other images, a coronet, and a shield, and that it was ‘reported to have been the first house built in March.’2 A sale of the White Hart Inn was announced in April 1870 for the ‘old-licensed and wellaccustomed commercial inn’ with several outbuildings. The house contained large underground cellars for wines and beer, six convenient rooms on the ground floor, a large clubroom and eight good sleeping-rooms above. The outbuildings included a small recently built brewery with malt chamber and attached

warehouse, a newly built cabinet maker’s shop easily converted into a good billiard room, stabling for twenty-seven horses, washhouse, granary, and piggeries. The grounds contained a spacious stable yard, with right-of-way for owners of adjoining premises, two large underground soft water cisterns, a small stockyard, and a walled garden. The inn had a good business and a barrel business linked to the brewery. Immediate possession was available as the occupier Thomas Loving had recently died. The building was copyhold of the Manor of Doddington.3 In 1905 the White Hart was remodelled from a dilapidated building to an up-to-date hotel. In 1906 the landlord was Daniel Keeton, it was owned by Morgan’s Brewery of Norwich and there was stabling for fifteen horses and fifteen vehicles, and four family and seven visitors’ bedrooms.4 The White Hart was closed in the 1950s and developed into shops and flats. 1

Skate Away T
he coldest months of the year are normally December, January and February and we grumble about how cold it is. It’s just as well we didn’t live a few hundred years ago as it was a good deal colder then and they didn’t have central heating. In the Fens years ago, flat fields would get flooded and then freeze over making fantastic ice rinks and even in Medieval times there is evidence of people making skates out of bone. John Peck, the local diarist from Parson Drove, who recorded what life was like in the Fens in the 1800s, mentions temperatures getting very cold! It was so cold that even the River Nene froze over, and John remembers his brother having a skating race on it. He records that in 1814 some places had ice for up to sixty days. And it was that at this time that speed skating became very popular in the Fens with thousands coming to watch. Many people in the Fens enjoyed skating. People did it as it was a good way of getting about in harsh conditions. They would often skate to get to places as it was much better than walking and quicker, going to Wisbech, Crowland, Whittlesey and even Peterborough, mostly using the frozen roads, fields and dykes. And in the very cold weather, the labourers couldn’t work with the land all ice-bound and no Social Security to help them, so they took to racing on skates to try to win some cash prizes in the races that were put on. And if it wasn’t money, they could win prizes of meat; beef or mutton. It is said that some races commanded audiences of more than a thousand like the one in 1823 between two men, May and Young. The spectators clambered onto Wisbech Town bridge and both the North and South Brinks as far as Elgoods. The winner won £10 guineas (£600 now) in a time of five minutes thirty-three seconds. The popularity of speed skating gradually grew throughout the country and in 1827 the National Skating Association was formed.
And as late as 1890 it was even cold enough for the Nene to freeze enough again for people to skate on. But often a field or meadow would be flooded and when it froze it could be used for races. And there were mad races like the one in the 1870s when a skater had a race with a train from Littleport to Ely… and won! Ice is not without its dangers though and, for example, sadly in January 1817 a thirteen-year-old boy drowned at Thorney and two brothers aged six and seven drowned at Walsoken. In the 21st century, temperatures kept rising and in consequence there was less ice to skate on. In 2010 it was cold enough to have skating championships at Whittlesey Wash and again in 2018 but (despite recycling etc) if the population of this earth gets more and more, temperatures will rise even more. After thousands of years, the world population in John Peck’s Day in the 1800s was around one billion. Just one hundred and fifty years later the world population is more than eight billion. Is it any wonder that we have global warming? Gandhi said: ‘Live simply so that other people may simply Live.’ And, although the Fen skaters went fast, they didn’t get as fast as the fastest skater in the world as recorded in the Guinness World Records book. The record is held by a Dutch skater who managed a speed of 64mph (103kph). He said: ‘I was literally flying over the ice.’ And where did international speed skating start – in the Fens. The first race recorded in any detail was held from Wisbech to Whittlesey in 1763 and John Lamb of Wisbech won the prize sum of more than twenty guineas. You can explore the Wisbech and Fenland Museum and find the skates they used and even the one made from bone.

harliʼs Journey of Strength and Community
When Charli walked through the doors of Jamie's March Slimming World group in August 2024, she carried more than grief. Just a week after her mother’s funeral, she chose to honour her memory by embarking on a journey of transformation. Today, Charli stands eight stone and one-and-a-half pounds lighter – but her story is about far more than numbers on a scale. “Slimming World isn’t just about food. It’s about the community and believing in yourself, even when you didn’t think you could,” Charli reflects. At the 10.30am group, Charli found not only guidance but a family. Under the supportive leadership of Jamie, every member is made to feel welcome, motivated, and seen. Charli praises the group’s warmth. “Our 10.30am group is very special – friendly, full of warmth, and more than welcoming. Jamie goes above and beyond to make a member feel welcome, seen, and supported. The encouragement I have from the group has helped me stay focused, stick to plan, and chase every goal with purpose.”
Now at her target weight, Charli describes her transformation as mental as much as physical. From the very first week, she felt a shift in confidence, saying: “Every pound I lost lifted my confidence higher.” Her journey continues, with just 8lbs to go before achieving the remarkable Club 50 milestone – losing fifty percent of her starting weight. Charli’s story is proof that Slimming World is about resilience, community, and hope. It’s about finding strength in shared journeys and celebrating every victory, big or small. For anyone inspired by Charli’s success, Jamie runs Slimming World groups at the 2nd March Scout Hut, Mill View, March every Wednesday at 7.30am, 9am, 10.30am, 5.30pm and 7pm.

MATTERS TOILET BLOCK OPENING
A new toilet block in March town centre is due to open for use in the new year after work on the building was delayed by a collapsed sewer.
We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering March, PO Box 164, Bourne PE10 1ET Email: editor.march@discoveringmagazines.co.uk
The demolition of the former Barclays Bank building in Broad Street, next to the toilet block site, was also part of the regeneration project.
Fenland District Council's Cllr Chris Seaton, lead member of the March Future High Streets steering group, said: "It's frustrating and unfortunate that this unforeseeable issue delayed completion. The new toilet block will be a long-term asset to the town and a further enhancement of the redeveloped Broad Street area and we look forward to it being open and operational in the new year." The new toilet block, retaining characterful features of the old block, provides a male, female and disabled facility which will be accessed with contactless card payment of 20p. The old toilet block was removed to allow the riverside to be opened up and enhanced, complementing the new Broad Street layout.

FIVE STEPS TO BREAK FREE from Debt Blues this Winter
Fenland debt coach reveals top tips to getting out of debt in 2026
A
By Lorraine Milton
s a debt coach with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) in Fenland, I witness the severe toll that financial anxiety takes on many people.
As the weather turns colder and the heating needs cranking up, many face the harsh reality that there’s no money left for the meter. Then the credit card bills begin to pile up. If that’s the kind of situation you currently face, here are my top tips on how you can start to break free from the debt blues.
Have a post-Christmas clear-out Why not have a good clear-out and set aside any unwanted toys, clothes or other items that you could sell to earn a little extra cash? Organise your kitchen cupboards so that you know exactly what food supplies you have.
Take some time for yourself Financial worries can take a toll, so it’s important to prioritise your wellbeing and take some time out without putting stress on your budget. Search online for free local activities, go for a quiet 56
walk at a local beauty spot or even check out what events are going on at your local church. There are lots of free things you can do that can help keep you positive.
Plan ahead, don’t put off It might be tempting to ignore the unopened bills piling up, or to avoid checking your bank balance for fear of what it might reveal. However, facing your financial situation headon is crucial. Why not start by downloading CAP’s budgeting guide at capuk.org/budgeting to create your own personal budget?
Get support from a friend Addressing our financial worries can be a difficult task to tackle alone, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider talking to a trusted friend or family member who can support you.

If you’re struggling with unmanageable debt, call our free helpline on 0800 328 0006 and chat to one of our friendly CAP advisors who’ll arrange for a local debt coach to visit you in your home. They’ll chat through your options and support you through the process until you become debt free. GER FOOTBALL FIELD GRANDSTAND
T
By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum he new wooden grandstand of March GER football club was ceremonially opened one hundred years ago on Monday, June 8th, 1925 during the club's Holiday Sports Competition.
It represented a pinnacle of success in the club's short history and was of fine appearance. The Cambs Times reported that it made March proud and was even a credit to the county. It had a seating capacity of eight hundred and beneath it were spacious rooms for refreshments, dressing rooms, cloak rooms and wash houses. In glorious weather, a record crowd of five thousand gathered around the quarter mile race track. At 2pm from within the central seating area of the stand, normally reserved for press representatives, the club president, stationmaster W F Webb, introduced R Bell, assistant to the general manager of the southern area of the LNER. Mr Bell congratulated all sections of the railway workforce who had worked together side by side to build it, irrespective of their railway duties, whether they were senior officials, platelayers, drivers or signalmen, it made no difference. He then declared the stand open and one official reported that it was the finest stand in the eastern counties. The racing track was well prepared for athletics, cycling and whippet racing. The whippet racing attracted approximately forty contestants from as far away as London, Oxford and Cambridge. Between the races, several local amateur comedians entertained the crowd. Frank Owen recreated the role of Charlie Chaplin and had never been more humorous. Mr F Steward appeared as several characters, one as a capacious policeman – 'almost as thick as he was long, liberally using a stick of rhubarb as a truncheon.' Needless to say, there was much laughter. Throughout the day, the March Railway Silver Prize Band played in fine style under its conductor, A E Steel, and after the sports they continued to play for dancing. In the years since it was opened, the grandstand, said to be the second oldest wooden stand in the

country after Great Yarmouth Town, has witnessed a number of memorable occasions including Coronation festivities, March Trades Fairs, Fenland sports events as well as significant football matches. In June 2013, March Town United submitted plans for a new club house and also to demolish the existing wooden grandstand and replace it with a modern one-hundred-seater stand. The former was completed shortly after but the grandstand is still standing.
