other’s Day on March 15th and the start of British Summer Time a fortnight later on March 29th. That word “summer” sounds so beautiful to my ears right now, especially having suffered at the hands of the “rain gods” lately. When did we ever see so much rain? I know there’s the old term “February fill dyke” but really…!

Mother’s Day, of course, is when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing, a whole day in which we are spoilt rotten. Seriously, we do not expect the earth on Mother’s Day. It’s just lovely to get some recognition, whatever form that may take, for all our multi-tasking abilities and for our level-headedness and calm when the waters of the family home may sometimes get a little choppy! Three years on from Paula and I losing our own mother, we can join many others and think fondly of mums no longer with us – those wonderful memories continue to make us so grateful for their love and dedication.

Finally, from all of us mums, thanks in advance for all the flowers, chocolates, perfume and big hugs!

Sometimes I count myself fortunate that I work primarily from home.

After years commuting for an hour to an office and then having to drive the length and breadth of the UK to interview people, I can now roll out of bed and stroll into my office in seconds rather than having to tackle the increasingly busy Fenland roads.

Travelling is a bit of a nightmare nowadays. Just in the past month, I’ve suffered a four-hour delay at an airport, an enforced midjourney train swap after it was suddenly announced that the one I was on was not now going to stop at the station my car was parked at, and almost losing a wheel on my car after hitting a water filled pothole the depth of a mine shaft.

The closest thing to travel chaos I now have to endure is when my dog and I both arrive at the same part of the stairs at the same time and one of us is forced to give way…

Your Garden

M

arch is the start of the main seed sowing period and if you are planting seeds directly into the ground, the soil temperature should be between 7-10 degrees C. Using cloches at this stage can help you give young plants a stronger start.

Now is a good time to prepare your beds.

Dig out weeds such as bindweed and couch grass, and rake the soil thoroughly, breaking down any lumps to achieve a fine tilth and applying fertiliser. Hoe regularly to keep the annual weeds at bay. Also, with the warmer weather appear pests such as slugs and snails.

You can use slug pellets, or a safe organic solution is to use nematodes, which you buy in packs, add water and water them in, preferably before you plant.

By the end of the month, you should be able to plant out your “first earlies” (small ‘new potatoes’). They are faster growing and ready to harvest in as little as 12 weeks. The plants take up less space, so are useful in smaller plots, and can be grown in containers.

Potatoes like rich fertile soil so dig in some well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. A general rule of thumb when planting earlies is to dig a trench, approx.

15cm deep and then plant the potatoes 30cm apart in rows which are 60cm apart. Backfill the trench, gently firm down and then water.

When shoots start to appear keep earthing

them up to protect against frost. If you are growing them in containers, put one potato in a pot at least 30cm wide and deep. Using peat-free compost, half fill the container and shallow plant the potato. As shoots start to appear keep covering them up until the compost reaches the top of the container.

Other jobs this month: • Feed your over wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage – use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser.

• Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown either indoors or outdoors, under cloches or in cold frames. Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month.

• Sow Brussels sprouts, cabbage, sprouting broccoli indoors and to take full advantage of the ripening season, sow aubergines, chillies and peppers indoors.

• Plant out onion and shallot sets – last chance to plant garlic.

• Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas, chard, parsnips, spinach and broad beans can be sown into the open ground but may need to be under cover.

• Herbs such as rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting.

M

arch is a month that invites reflection. With both Mothering Sunday and International Women’s Day, there is a lot of conversation about care, strength, and the roles women play in the lives of others.

For many women in our community, however, this month can also stir up quieter and more complicated feelings. Some are mothers. Some wanted to be and couldn’t. Some never planned to be, yet still found their lives reshaped by caring responsibilities, loss, change, or simply time passing.

What connects these experiences is not motherhood itself, but how life alters us, often invisibly, and how rarely we are given permission to acknowledge that shift.

In Whittlesey, I meet many women who have put parts of themselves on hold. Sometimes for children, sometimes for family, sometimes because life demanded survival rather than ambition.

When things finally slow down, a familiar question appears: “Who am I now?”

This is where confidence often falters, not because ability has been lost, but because identity has changed. From a coaching perspective, rebuilding confidence does not start with fixing yourself. It starts with reconnecting to yourself. Three practical steps can help.

First, name the change. Acknowledge how recent years have shaped you emotionally, practically, and mentally. Confidence grows when experience is recognised rather than dismissed.

Second, separate your worth from productivity.

Many women measure value through output. Ask instead: what gives me energy, calm, or meaning now? Alignment builds confidence faster than achievement.

Third, experiment gently. You do not need a five-year plan. Small steps, such as learning, conversations, creative projects, or protected thinking time, rebuild trust without pressure.

International Women’s Day often celebrates resilience and success. This Mothering Sunday, perhaps we can also make space for compassion, especially for women whose journeys do not fit neat categories.

You are not behind. You are not asking for too much. You are responding to change.

KIRSTY MAKES A NAME FOR HERSELF

K

irsty Parnell has overcome a number of obstacles to set up in business.

The 38-year-old had to contend with opposition on her way to launching her Watts Her Name electrical business.

She said: “I had wanted to become an electrician for quite a while but faced a number of hurdles for being female, being too old and suffering from chronic fatigue and headaches.”

However, the Whittlesey woman stayed focused and after completing a four-year apprenticeship with local firm GDC Electrical started her own business last year.

Kirsty, who previously worked as a carer at homes in Whittlesey and Ramsey, had her interest sparked by watching her late father Stephen conduct DIY work at home. She said: “I like to do hands-on work, to get things working. Power is essential and I really enjoy what I do.”

Kirsty can carry out all types of electrical work for domestic and commercial properties including full and partial rewires, PAT

testing, EICR testing and new installations.

She added: “I’ve picked up quite a lot of work via Facebook and word of mouth and am about to start my biggest project which includes work on an Airbnb conversion.

I am available for work in the local area including March, Ramsey and Peterborough, in fact anywhere within an hour’s drive from home.”

Outside of work, Kirsty enjoys reading, Lego building and organising an annual Hallowe’en display for charity.

FORFEITURE OF COMMERCIAL LEASES Forfeiture is the process by which a commercial landlord brings a lease to an end and regains possession of the property following a tenant’s breach of the lease terms. Once forfeiture takes place, the lease is terminated.

Do you have the right to forfeit?

A landlord can only forfeit a lease where the lease contains an express right to forfeit or re-entry and the tenant has breached specific terms, such as nonpayment of rent or other charges. The procedure depends on the nature of the breach and whether it relates to rent arrears or a breach of another lease obligation, such as sub-letting without consent.

Forfeiture is a serious step and should be approached with caution. In some cases, a tenant may apply for relief from forfeiture, allowing a court to reinstate the lease if the breach is remedied.

There are also situations where forfeiture may be disproportionate or where a landlord may inadvertently waive the right to forfeit.

Grounds for forfeiture Non-payment of rent: Where a tenant falls into

A section 146 notice must specify the breached lease clause, allow a reasonable time to remedy the breach (often 14–21 days), and set out any loss or costs incurred. Court proceedings may follow if the breach is not remedied, particularly where there is a residential element or the tenant is in occupation.

Peaceful re-entry: Peaceful re-entry is usually carried out by a certificated bailiff outside business hours, with the premises secured by a locksmith.

Notices will be displayed and sent to the tenant and the condition of the property and any goods left behind should be recorded.

Tenant insolvency: Many leases allow forfeiture if

a tenant enters insolvency. Practical arrangements may be needed to allow the tenant or insolvency practitioner time to deal with goods, often with interim rent and insurance agreed.

Court order or peaceful re-entry?

The correct method depends on the circumstances. If a tenant occupies any part of the premises, a court order will be required. Peaceful re-entry for rent arrears may still allow the tenant to apply for relief from forfeiture within six months.

REGENERATION SCHEME: FORMER BARCLAYS BANK SITE ATTRACTING INTEREST Bids are now coming in for the former Barclays Bank site in Broad Street, March.

The purchase and demolition of the town centre building marks the final phase of the March’s wider regeneration scheme, helping to unlock a key town centre site for future redevelopment.

Cllr Chris Seaton, lead member of the March Future High Streets steering group, said: “Before demolition, there was little to no interest in the site. Since clearing it, we have already received several bids, which clearly demonstrates the regeneration intervention has been successful.

The contractual requirements placed on the developer will also ensure that the site continues to contribute positively to the regeneration of March.

“Regeneration is not about quick financial returns, it’s about creating a town centre that works better for residents, businesses and visitors.

March is now in a much stronger position than it was, and the Barclays site is a key part of that transformation.”

The purchase and demolition of the building formed part of the Government’s Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) programme, which supports town centres by funding interventions that the private sector is unable to deliver alone. The fund’s aim is to “renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that drives growth, improves experience and ensures future sustainability.”

Cllr Seaton added: “If the Barclays site were viewed in isolation and purely on a commercial basis, it would be easy to draw the wrong conclusions. Regeneration is about the bigger picture – improving confidence in a site and putting them in a position where investment can finally happen.”

The sale of the site will include contractual requirements to ensure it does not remain vacant for a prolonged period. These will require the timely submission of a full planning application and the commencement of construction following planning permission.

TALK TO BE HELD ON THE IMPACT OF DEMENTIA

A talk on the ever-growing impact of dementia on the lives of individuals and families is being held this month.

The Cambridge Festival 2026 will feature an overview of dementia research, given by local experienced scientist in the field of neurodegeneration Dr Stephen Chawner who will present state-of-the-art scientific research and clinical breakthroughs in a layperson-friendly manner.

It’s estimated that approximately one million people are suffering from dementia in the UK alone, with a projected one person in two being affected by dementia in their lifetime, which makes dementia the UK’s leading cause of death, but research into it is generating hope for future therapies.

Dr Chawner, who has been a dementia researcher at the ALBORADA Drug Discovery Institute (ADDI) in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) in Cambridge for eight-and-a- half-years, said: “It’s great to be able to produce impactful dementia research in collaboration with ARUK. I’m a strong believer that the outcomes of medical and scientific research should be accessible to the public, to enable guidance for those affected as well as providing reassurance that scientists are working hard on tackling major health challenges such as dementia. I aim for this talk to help demystify the drug discovery and dementia research processes for members of the non-scientific community.”

e can all make a difference to our planet by reducing the amount of food we throw out, and we at Christians Against Poverty (CAP) want to offer some practical tips to help.

By reducing food waste, you may be able to save money as well as have a positive impact in your home and community.

Organise your food

Do a regular stock-check

Try organising your food storage so that you can easily find what food you have available to use.

Decanting pantry items like flour and pasta into clear jars labelled with their use-by dates will make it easier to see what you have and when it needs to be used by (you could reuse old coffee jars to save money). Arrange food items by expiry date, with the shorter shelf-life items at the front – this will enable you to use up the ingredients in your meals before they go out of date.

Try and get in the habit of looking through your food cupboards every week to check expiry dates and items that have run out or are getting low. You might find it helpful to keep a record in a notebook, or a simple list stuck on the fridge that you can refer to – find a method that works best for you.

Buy what you’ll use Although it can sometimes be cheaper to buy in bulk, it may only prove economical if you actually use all the food. So, if you do buy in bulk, plan a few recipes first to make sure you’re using up the ingredients – and freeze any leftovers.

Plan for the week Before you go shopping, plan your meals in advance, and work out exactly what you need to buy. Make a shopping list and stick to it. This reduces the chance of overspending and restricts potential food waste. You could keep a diary or notebook just for meal planning and shopping lists, or if you use an app on your phone, you could also add links to recipes and include notes of any ingredients you need.

Give away leftovers Leftovers don’t need to be wasted – why not give any surplus food to a friend or neighbour that you know may benefit from receiving food parcels or a home cooked meal? You could also consider donating any tinned/non-fresh food to charity. Local churches and charities that run community outreach work will often welcome food donations to give to people in need.

Year End Tax Opportunities Ben Beech As we approach the end of the 2025/26 tax year, it’s an ideal time for business owners and individuals to consider action to be taken before 5 April. Taking time to plan ahead can help to reduce tax liabilities and ensure important reliefs and allowances are not missed.

Timing of Expenditure The timing of business expenditure can significantly affect a business’ tax bill. Expenses incurred before the year end may reduce current taxable profits, while spending after the year end may delay tax relief until a year later. If you are aware of any significant upcoming costs, consider how the timing of this might affect your tax.

Capital Allowances If you are planning to invest in machinery, equipment or vehicles, the timing can affect how quickly you obtain tax relief. Capital Allowances provide valuable deductions, but the rules are detailed and depend on the type of asset.

The way in which an asset is funded, for example through outright purchase, hire purchase, or leasing can also influence the relief available.

Before making any significant investments, it is worth checking whether the asset qualifies for immediate relief or whether the relief will be spread over a number of years.

Pension Contributions Pension contributions are one of the most tax efficient planning tools. For limited company

directors, employer pension contributions are usually deductible for Corporation Tax purposes and do not attract National Insurance. For sole traders and individuals, personal contributions can extend the basic rate tax band, potentially reducing the amount of income taxed at higher rates. Making pension contributions before the tax year end ensures that tax relief is secured as early as possible.

Use of Tax Allowances You could consider maximising your £20,000 Individual Savings Accounts (ISA) allowance before it resets at the end of the tax year. Funds held within ISAs are free from both Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. If Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a concern, the annual £3,000 gift allowance may be worth considering.

This allows an individual to give away up to £3,000 each tax year without it forming part of their estate for IHT purposes. The allowance can be carried forward one year, meaning some individuals may be able to pass on up to £6,000 before 5 April, with a further £3,000 available once the new tax year begins.

RUM’S THE WORD!

T

here are several alcoholic drinks that are classed as ‘spirits’, which have been very popular for many years. Depending on a person’s tastes and preferences, these types of beverages continue to increase in popularity, as modern-times progress.

Light, golden and dark-coloured rums, plus flavoured rum productions, for example, all have devotees. The history of rums can be traced back to the 17th century as they developed from sugar plantations in the Caribbean. Many rum productions involve family recipes that have been handed down over generations, with a good number containing closely guarded secret ingredients.

The award-winning Kromanti Company utilises a mix of authentic Caribbean fruits, plus herbs and spices, in their rum productions.

KROMANTI TAMARIND RUM (40% vol) is known as their signature rum, with the family recipe embracing and reflecting life on the Caribbean islands. I found this fine, tamarind-infused rum, to possess 30

smooth flavours of Caribbean fruits, with accompaniments of herbs and spices, that include nutmeg and cinnamon, adding to the outstanding enjoyment and experience for the mouth’s pleasures and the palate’s delight.

KROMANTI PLANTAIN RUM (40% vol) is a further fine production from this company and gained popularity from the outset. This plantain-infused delectation came across as being wellbalanced, with an excellent smooth quality, derived from the ingredients, including ripe, plantain fruits. This is another hugely impressive rum production from Kromanti, again pleasing the mouth and palate with exceptional delight.

Conclusion? Whilst ‘some’ of the requirements and qualities can be found in various rum productions,

I located ‘all’ of what I was looking for in these Kromanti rums – namely appearance, bouquet, flavour and aftertaste, with the bottles being most attractively presented. The awards, that Kromanti has received, are (in my opinion) very much justifiably deserved.

Their informative website has all details of special offers and further information about Kromanti rums, which I found very interesting indeed, including stockists, other merchandise and notes from the co-founders, father and daughter duo, Cashain and Dani. Ordering is easy too, with orders being dispatched quickly and efficiently. Highly recommended.

New Takeaway thinks inside The Box! Zoe Bedford, 44, has recently realised her dream of opening up a takeaway sandwich shop. After much preparation and hard work, The Lunch Box, in Plough Road, was finally born just before Christmas, and it's been on a roll ever since!

Working alongside her mother-in-law, Josie, who has always been in the food industry, they have both loved the first few busy weeks in their new venture and enjoy chatting with the customers and getting to know them.

‘The people of Whittlesey have been so friendly and welcoming,’ Zoe said, ‘even bringing in gifts just before Christmas, even though we had only just opened!’

Opening at 7am for the early-risers, so close to the town centre, and with plenty of parking available, this a convenient location for all. Plans for the future include expanding into providing delivery.

The Lunch Box has a delicious and extensive, handmade and locally-sourced menu selection on offer, including sausage rolls, baguettes, bacon baps, jacket potatoes, salads, cakes, plus carefully selected and freshly roasted coffee to complete your warm welcome.

he 22nd East Anglian Game & Country Fair will take place on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th 2026 at the prestigious Euston Estate, home to The Duke and Duchess of Grafton, just off the A11 at Elveden, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.

Mother’s Day Traditions Around the World In this country, we are not alone in honouring and thanking our mums on “Mother’s Day”, falling as it does every year on the fourth Sunday of Lent, or three weeks before Easter Sunday, this year Sunday March 15th.

T

he customs and traditions focusing on Mother’s Day around the world just confirm that, whilst our societies may be different in so many ways, there remains the central theme, that of taking time out to show our love and affection for this one person who has been there, literally from “Day One”, to care for and nurture us as we grow.

In the UK, Mothering Sunday began as a way for Christians to honour the Virgin Mary but has evolved to include all mothers. Traditionally, children especially are encouraged to shower mum with flowers and chocolates and even help out in the kitchen!

In Italy, mothers are relieved of household chores, the idea being to enable relaxation to kick in.

Spouses and children take on the tasks, while mum lies back and enjoys being pampered with love and affection.

Mother’s Day in Japan sees children present their mums with bouquets or single stems of red carnations. These represent a mother’s selfless love and sacrifices made for her children.

The French call it “Fete des Meres” and a popular tradition is that a cake is baked and decorated to represent a floral bouquet and lovingly presented to “Maman”.

In Peru, it is common for families to visit cemeteries on Mother’s Day to remember and honour deceased mothers. Many graves become 38

festooned with gifts, candles and other offerings to keep her memory alive.

Mother’s Day in Mexico often begins with a serenade called “Las Mananitas”. Family members and sometimes mariachi bands will gather outside mum’s window to express love and appreciation.

In Australia, the tradition of giving chrysanthemums is a popular and enduring practice. How appropriate to give ‘mums to mums?

In Thailand, Mother’s Day has been celebrated on August 12th to mark the birthday of their beloved Queen Sirikit (who sadly passed away last October).

Ceremonies and celebrations honour both mothers and their queen. Jasmine is traditionally gifted as a symbol of purity and love.

Greater Celandine Chelidonium majus

T

his is a very strange plant having characteristics of different plant families.

Greater Celandine has four petals arranged in a cross

The word celandine is a corruption of chelidon. The Greeks called it Chelidon, the Greek word for Swallow, because it flowers just as the first swallows appear in spring and lasts until they depart in autumn. This caused the common name of Swallowwort.

The only similarity between the Greater and Lesser Celandine is that they both have yellow flowers.

Unlike the Lesser Celandine, it is not related to the buttercup family even though the leaves look vaguely the same shape.

The flowers have four petals arranged in the form of a cross, resembling plants of the cabbage family. The seedpods are long, also like members of the cabbage family, but the plant is not a brassica.

It has oil glands on its seeds like members of the Hellebore family that ensure its seeds are spread far and wide. Ants feed on the oil, the seeds sticking to their bodies and are carried away to grow elsewhere.

The Greater Celandine is actually a member of the poppy family, albeit an unusual one with very small yellow flowers.

This plant is not an attention grabber and we have all probably seen and not given it a second glance.

The Greater Celandine grows to between one and three feet tall (30-90cm) and is generally loose and a bit untidy. Once opened, the flowers do not close in any conditions so are easily damaged.

The pale greyish green, almost hairless, leaves on thin stems are divided evenly into leaflets, usually two on each side, opposite each other on each side and a larger one at the end. The edges of the leaves are all cut into all around by rounded teeth. It is a perennial with thick fleshy roots and will grow in most conditions. The leaves will wilt almost immediately if they are cut away from the plant and the petals will also drop from the flowers.

If any part of the plant is broken it will exude an orangecoloured sap that has been Greater Celandin used to burn e grows almost anywhe away warts re and corns but contact with normal skin is damaging unless washed off very quickly.

It will stain the hands strongly and has a very unpleasant smell. It also has a nauseous taste so the poisons it contains are unlikely to prove fatal.

It has, in the past, been used for various medicinal purposes most of which are very dubious. One use is chewing the root to treat toothache!

MATTERS FUNDRAISING EVENT FOR HEROES

A fundraising event is being held this month to help raise funds for an overseas trip in aid of Help For Heroes.

Steve Bedford and a group of fellow fundraisers – the ‘Battlefield Badgers’ – will be embarking on their fifth epic Big Battlefield Bike ride challenge, covering 250+ miles over four days from June 23rd -28th 2026, helping to raise money for the charity.

This iconic four-day cycle challenge will commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and to mark Armed Forces Day. It will start in Ypres before cycling through historic World War 1 sites in Northern France to pay homage to our brave men and women, finishing with a poignant tribute to the fallen soldiers of the First World War at Thiepval Memorial – the largest Commonwealth war memorial in the world.

A fund-raising evening to raise funds will be held this month in Peterborough. An evening of comedy, hosted by Ian Hayes of Hats Funny Comedy, with music supplied by Stevie B of Peterborough, will be held at The Boulevard Club, Bourges Boulevard, New England, Peterborough PE1 2AU on Friday, March 20th, 2026, with tickets available for £20. The event will include buffet food and the chance to win some incredible prizes.

SHOW RETURNS FOR FENLAND LEGO LOVERS LEGO fans across Fenland are in for a treat as the second Wisbech Brick Show returns on Saturday, March 7th at the Queen Mary Centre.

Following the success of last year’s debut event, this year’s show promises even more spectacular displays, hands-on activities, and opportunities for collectors and families alike.

Visitors will be able to explore amazing LEGO creations built by some of the most talented and imaginative builders in the country. From intricate models to large-scale displays, the event will showcase the creativity and engineering skill behind the UK’s thriving LEGO community.

Families can also enjoy a range of interactive zones, including: building zones for children and adults; colouring area; and a fun ‘find the missing word’ challenge hidden throughout the displays.

A variety of LEGO traders will also be in attendance, offering everything from brand new sets to rare and retired items. Visitors will have the chance to hunt for elusive minifigures or even build their own custom character on the day.

The Wisbech Brick Show continues to grow as a key community event, attracting families, collectors, and enthusiasts from across the region.

Station Road is a fine brick mid-late 19th century house with white rendered front wall. It has a tiled roof above a decorative brick course and a left-hand chimneystack. It has three bays, with two upper long sash windows in each. The two lower original windows have been replaced. In the centre is the large wooden door to an arch allowing vehicles through the building.

The 1886 and 1902 maps show two semi-detached houses with arched space between and gardens on this site. By 1927 the northern side of the combined building was extended and a large building stood in the joint garden behind the house. A footpath ran from the end of the gardens to County Road.1 Sanitary Steam Laundry Company was formed in 1901, with four directors including Joseph Collingwood, with secretary Arthur F Sharman, to establish a sanitary steam laundry in March. They thought there was a demand for this instead of sending laundry elsewhere.2 In 1902, in the completed laundry, highest quality machinery from Messrs. W Summerscales and Sons Ltd, Keighley Yorkshire, the largest makers of laundry machinery in the world, was used in the various processes of cleansing and ironing.

The building was on one floor level. Soiled linen was checked and forwarded to the washing place.

Flannels woollens and worsted goods were dealt with separately, with best quality soap and pure water. Two large ‘Challenge Renown’ washing, boiling, rinsing and blueing machines prevented any damage such as tearing to the clothes.

Clothes were removed from the machines and sent to the hydro-extractor to extract the water and partly dry them. The machine spinner revolved at about 1800 revolutions per minute, with the water flowing to an outlet. The assorted articles were then forwarded in trolleys to the drying-room where eight heated wheeled ‘horses’ 46

quickly dried the clothes.

A powerful heater and a fan drawing fresh air forced blast dried the clothes at 120 degrees, removing all moisture and impurities. The linen was then taken to the large ‘Challenge’ ironing and finishing machine.

Skilled workers carried out shirt ironing and finishing.

All clothes were aired before being sent home then packed into hampers to be delivered in the company’s van.3 In 1933, the laundry’s manager Mr C J Rice employed sixteen local women and girls and four men. Several thousand garments were laundered every week from a wide area around, using eight thousand gallons of water a day from a natural spring there.4 In 1968, March Laundry closed down and the business and delivery service was transferred to St Neots though the shop remained open.5 The building has had many uses including drycleaning shop, warehouse, hairdressers, and offices. AI IS HERE TO STAY

rtificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, in particular computer systems. Love it or loathe it, AI is here to stay. And it is only getting bigger and better. Just like the internet all those years ago, people had their doubts. Absolutely, it does have its negatives but used properly, it has revolutionised the way we live, work, and socialise.

The same can be said of AI - it is becoming an everyday essential and using it effectively can make us more productive, creative, and efficient.

The following are the top three AI platforms and what they are generally best for.

CHATGPT – available on web, iOS, and Android apps.

ChatGPT is essentially a writing assistant to which you can ask questions, give tasks, or request ideas and it will respond with something that sounds like an actual person wrote it. For writers, ChatGPT can help brainstorm story ideas, build outlines and even generate full paragraphs of text (although you will always want

to edit what it writes!). It is also a brilliant editing and summarising assistant - use it for copy editing, proofreading, rephrasing, style adjustments and more. You can even upload photos and ask questions about them; for example, add a picture of a flower and ask, ‘What flower is this?’

MICROSOFT COPILOT – available with MS Office 365 applications.

Integrated into Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Copilot is a fantastic tool for enhancing productivity and creativity. In Word, use it to brainstorm ideas, summarise documents and generate reports.

In Excel, Copilot can assist with data analysis, automate calculations and create charts. In PowerPoint, it can suggest design ideas, outline content, and even produce slides. Within Teams, Copilot helps schedule meetings, recap discussions, and suggest action items.

GOOGLE GEMINI – accessible through web and integrated with Google services.

What makes Gemini special is how versatile it is. It has a user-friendly

interface and is great for writing emails, summaries, blog drafts, and research overviews, with very little editing. It also integrates well with Google products like Gmail and Docs.

Gemini can create any image you ask it to, from photorealistic pictures, graphics, cartoons, and even data charts. Used inside Google Slides, it will instantly enhance a slide with a custom visual. It’s also good fun to try out on personal pictures in Google Photos. Basically, imagine almost any picture and Gemini will create it!

However, it’s important to remember that AI is not infallible.

We advise caution if using AI as a research tool as it can often ‘hallucinate,’ i.e. make up information. It is fine for satisfying idle curiosities, but make sure you double-check whatever you learn from AI against a reputable source for anything more important. There are also ethical concerns around AI-generated images, such as preventing misuse and addressing potential harm, which are incredibly important as the technology continues to develop.

EMMA’S MAKING NEW MEMORIES

March woman has used a new hobby to start her own business. Emma Foreman made the decision to set up The Little Resin Studio six months ago after the effects of ‘Long Covid’ stopped her from continuing to work as a music teacher.

“I can make all types of things, for example I can dry a wedding bouquet and then create a piece to be enjoyed for years to come. Or memorial keepsakes for people or pets. I even had a friend ask me to make an item from horse hair after losing their own horse.

Now she spends her time making an assortment of bespoke resin art, including memorial jewellery, keepsakes and flower preservation.

“I like to speak with people to discover what they would like and then try and make something personal to them. It is lovely to be able to make an item that makes someone happy.

She said: “When I became unwell, I was unable to continue to play the piano and work as a music teacher so I decided to look for a creative outlet.

I set about finding a new hobby and turned to working with resin, at first making things for friends and family and now as a business.

“I thought the time was right to share details of what I do with a wider audience.”

FROM ROYALS TO ROADS…

A

royal visit to Fenland is a special occasion, so it was great to join staff at the Princes Group in Wisbech to mark one hundred years of their canning and food production business with a visit from HRH The Princess Royal.

The King himself recently visited a parkrun at Sandringham, and locally we had our own celebratory parkrun as March marked its tenth anniversary. It is a great event and it was a pleasure to join to start off the runners. It is a friendly and welcoming crowd, and whether it helps give you a nudge to get the trainers out or to join in as a volunteer marshall enjoying the fresh air, it is well worth a visit.

Also, positive this month has been the news that the application to store vast quantities of waste at Wisbech Port has been withdrawn. After highlighting concerns with this proposal, which would have had a terrible impact on homes nearby and lorry traffic movements through the town, many residents contacted the Environment Agency who in turn raised further questions with the applicant. Whilst it is possible that they try again in the future, it is welcome news that this proposal has been withdrawn.

Westwood School in March is the largest primary school in Cambridgeshire, with more than 750 pupils. Yet the school, which is split over two sites, does not have a school crossing patrol or level crossing. When I met with the school principal, Ms Read, she told me about a number of near misses on the road and her fear that a child could be seriously hurt.

Cambridgeshire County Council has said that a pelican crossing will not be a priority until there is ‘a cluster of accidents.’ I don’t believe we should wait for a child to be injured before action is taken. So, I am asking residents to sign a petition to support the school in securing a pelican crossing, and it would be great if you could add your support by signing the petition at www.stevebarclay.net/westwood There is significant and understandable anger across Fenland at the poor state of local roads, and the wider delays to road work such as the repair of King’s Dyke crossing. Like many residents I do a lot of driving across Fenland and know how frustrating this is. I cannot recall our roads ever being in such a bad state, and there is a lack of grip from Cambridgeshire County Council regarding the speed of repairs and in undertaking necessary road re-surfacing. I will continue to raise these concerns with the county council on behalf of residents.

This month we have a “Friday the Thirteenth” A warning to all you triskaidekaphobes that this month happens to include a Friday the 13th.

The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom "Friday" is named, and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen), or paraskevidekatriaphobia a concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (meaning "Friday"), and dekatreís (meaning "thirteen"), attached to phobía (from phóbos, meaning "fear").

Fear of Friday the 13th is rooted in ancient, separate bad-luck associations with the number 13 and the day Friday. The two unlucky entities combine to make it one super unlucky day.

There is a Biblical reference to the unlucky number 13. Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th guest to the Last Supper.

It is traditionally believed that Eve tempted Adam with the apple on a Friday. Tradition also has it that the Flood in the Bible, the confusion at the Tower of Babel, and the death of Jesus Christ all took place on a Friday.

So how is fear of the number thirteen demonstrated?

• More than 80% of high-rise buildings lack a 13th floor.

• Many airports avoid a Gate 13.

• Hospitals and hotels regularly have no room number 13.

• Many American cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue, whilst many new houses built in this country will not be given a number 13 in their address.

Finally, it is thought by some that, if you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's luck. Just note how mass murderers, such as Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer all have 13 letters in their names!

YOUNGSTERS LEARN ABOUT PET CARE

SigmaVet in March has played host to youngsters from the 4th March Brownies.

The practice welcomed 23 members of the group where they enjoyed a school-style presentation projected on the big screen and learned about the essentials of pet ownership, responsibility, and general pet care before enjoying a hands-on tour.

SigmaVet’s community involvement programme has also continued with a visit to Glebelands Primary School in Chatteris where it’s said the pupils were absolutely brilliant and engaged in a lively discussion about what it means to care for a pet.

MARY MAKES A SPLASH ON HER 100TH BIRTHDAY A March resident has celebrated her 100th birthday by going for a swim!

Mary, a resident of Glenholme Wendreth Court, had a special birthday wish to visit a swimming pool again and so the home arranged a private session in a well heated pool exclusively for her and even ordered a new swimming suit in her favourite colour – turquoise blue.

She enjoyed a memorable day with family and friends and also received a heartfelt message from the King, a moment that deeply touched her and everyone at the home.

THE AFTERMATH OF THE INFERNO

ven as Rev Spooner watched his church consumed by an inferno in October 1959, someone in the crowd of onlookers offered £100 towards its reconstruction. Many offers of assistance were forthcoming as the building was vastly under insured.

The Centenary Baptist Church after restoration On Friday morning it was found that the rooms at the back and the school room were almost undamaged.

However, the organ, two pianos and all the furniture had been destroyed along with a war memorial in the form of a brass lectern. The next Sunday service was held in Burrowmoor Junior School and it must have gladdened Spooner's heart as he faced a large congregation.

Although the front gable end needed taking down, the main shell of the building was sound.

Preliminary outline planning for a new church was soon drawn up. A fund-raising scheme called the 'Hundreds Scheme' was set up whereby people were invited to give donations in hundreds of pennies, 3ds, 6ds, shillings etc. Response to the appeal was prompt. They also planned, with the consent of the council and assistance of other stall holders, a 'hot dog' stall on the market on Saturdays. They were hoping for a brisk trade.

The congregation was able to view new external and interior plans for a new church on Tuesday, December 1st. These were explained in detail by architect J E Mitchell. Most noticeable was that the building would be twelve feet lower than previously. He said that he expected the front gable would be demolished down to about sixteen feet above the church floor. Although the three front entrances would remain, new front windows would be of contemporary design. The flight of steps to the entrances would remain the same. There would be a new organ and internal changes would be in keeping with the latest trends in Baptist Church architecture. There

would be seating for 337 people although there would be no gallery as before. The building had been insured for £16,485.

Rev Spooner said that the plans had been submitted to the council planning committee and if approved would be put out to tender. He hoped to approach completion by the end of 1960.

Ever since the fire, the congregation had been united in their efforts to overcome the disaster.

Fund raising had reached £1562 and activities were continuing. Fund raising by young people of March Baptist Church had reached £150 £50 more that their target. The market day 'hot dog' stall had been popular with between two hundred and three hundred sold each week. Eventually £3474 was raised towards the total cost of nearly £20,000.

The construction work was eventually completed by mid-1961 and a re-opening ceremony was held on Saturday, July 15th when the church was declared open by Mrs W Lewis. Six hundred people from far and wide filled the church and school room below so there were not enough seats for everyone.
