n 1830 on the Forty Foot drain between Horseway in the East, Carter’s Bridge and Puddock Road Bridge in the West stood the drainage windmills of Curf Fen (Bull’s Mill), Beezlings, Westmoor, Purrant’s, Crease and Puddock Toll. All built in order to overcome an unexpected aspect of drainage that Vermuyden and other engineers in the 1630s were totally unaware of - the shrinkage of the peat as it dried out. The surface of the peat rapidly became lower, much to the surprise of some, who believed the bottom of the drainage channel was coming up!

During the 1660s many landowners were complaining of flooded lands and having to rebuild banks. The only answer to the problem of shrinking peat was to build ‘ingins’ (engines) to lift the water from dyke to drain and from drain to river and so to sea. The only real source of power at hand was the wind. The weakness of a scoop wheel mill was the inability to lift no more than a few feet, therefore, several windmills were employed to lift in stages. In 1794 Samuel Stocks and Richard Claxon of Chatteris were paid 14 shillings a week to tend some of the mills and ensure they were turned to wind. The wind speed required to drive the machinery limited the mills to working at only 25% efficiency.

Eventually steam power solved the problem of inadequate windmills. Pumps could work when needed and were not reliant on the wind and, more importantly, could lift and pump into the tidal flow regardless of high tide or not. 16 Foot, 20 Foot, 40 Foot – What does it mean? Simply the width of the drain at surface water level. The 40 Foot or Vermuyden’s drain was dug to drain the fens towards Ramsey. The calculations made to drain 20,000 acres to a tidal outfall by gravity would require a drain 40 feet wide at the top, 10 feet 6 inches at the bottom and 7 feet 6 inches deep, This would also allow for containment in the hours the sluice gates were closed during high tide. Inside Chatteris's home for snooker, pool and good company.

The venue was created by professional snooker player and 2022 Welsh Open champion Joe Perry, who runs the club alongside Penny. Since opening on Market Hill in 2024, JP's has quickly developed an identity of its own: polished and professional enough for committed competitors, yet relaxed enough for newcomers, families and friends simply looking for an enjoyable game.

JP's combines high-quality playing conditions with the welcome of a local venue. Inside, exposed brickwork and characterful architectural details give the Palace a distinctive sense of place. There are three well-maintained snooker tables, two of which are heated, alongside pool tables beneath bright match lighting, creating conditions in which every shot can be seen and appreciated. It is an impressive setting, but never an intimidating one.

Local History

The Magpies and The Lilies The History of Chatteris Football

C

By Julie Smith of Chatteris Archives

hatteris has, over the years, been home to several football teams. Back in the 1890s, the newspapers reported on games played by Chatteris Rovers, Chatteris Swifts and the Chatteris St. Peter’s team which had been established by the Parish Church. Best known is probably the Chatteris Town Football Club. The team was nicknamed The Lilies and is still known by that name. They earned that nickname when the team started to play in a white strip.

Back in 1895, another team from Chatteris emerged. They were made up predominantly of men from the Chatteris Engineering Works and were called the Chatteris Engineers. They played in a black and white striped strip and so they were nicknamed The Magpies. By 1909, the team had moved from being a team of juniors to adults and even entered the FA Cup competition, reaching the Fourth Preliminary Round but lost to Kings Lynn. In the 1920s, the Magpies were in the same league as Chatteris Town and played against one another. It led to some interesting newspaper match reports, one of which reported an Engineers’ victory with the headline, “Magpies Peck the Heart out of the Lilies”.

Photo above Chatteris Town Football Team 1929

The Magpies folded in 1975, ending about eighty years of their football history, but the Lilies live on, continuing to play at their West Street home to this day. These team photos have been contributed to the Chatteris Community Archive website where you can find some more Chatteris adult and junior football team pictures.

Visit www.chatteris.ccan.co.uk to leave a comment or upload a photo. We would love to share your photos of Chatteris football teams.

The Magpies played at Tucks Gate on Wenny Road. This is roughly where Cromwell Primary School grounds are now, but all traces of the ground are gone. It is difficult to imagine that there was once a grandstand there with three hundred seats. In later years, the team moved to the pitch off Fairview. The photo below shows the Engineers outside their newlyopened changing rooms at the Fairview ground, circa 1956.

Chatteris flourishes

WITH CHARACTER AND COLOUR

WORDS BY SALLY MONNERY SECRETARY, CHATTERIS IN BLOOM

Despite a dry and demanding summer, Chatteris in Bloom's volunteers have filled the town with flowers, creativity and community pride.

C

hatteris has been ablaze with colour this summer, despite the dry conditions. It has been a demanding season for Chatteris in Bloom's gardeners, who have worked tirelessly to keep displays thriving and the town looking its best.

Head gardener Sandie has designed and created eye-catching art features to sit alongside the floral displays, while Julie at Holwoods Nursery has lovingly grown the flowers. Schools and local youth groups have also been encouraged to take part, helping younger residents feel connected to the places they see every day. Behind the colour is a considerable amount of practical work. The small team of volunteers has weeded and planted, cleared litter, swept gutters and cleaned kerbs - often working on hands and knees, metre by metre. Their aim is not simply to create attractive displays, but to encourage pride in Chatteris and inspire others to care for the town too.

18

D I S C O V E R I N G Chatteris

Chatteris in Bloom was founded in 2005 and has built an impressive record. The town has won the coveted Anglia in Bloom Gold award nine times and was recently named the best town in the region. For a place with a proud boxing tradition, Chatteris's floral achievements continue to punch well above their weight. This year brings another exciting chapter. Chatteris is one of four towns shortlisted nationally in Britain in Bloom, alongside well-known places including Henley-on-Thames and Glastonbury. The results are due to be announced in October. The volunteers are proud to work for Chatteris, but they need more help. Hotter, drier conditions make it increasingly difficult to keep plants watered, so the group is looking for additional volunteers and suitable places around town where rainfall can be collected in accessible water butts. Anyone who would like to lend a hand, offer a possible water-collection location or find out more can contact Chatteris in Bloom through its Facebook page. Every hour volunteered and every practical offer of support will help the town continue to flourish.

Words from the Mayor

Councillor Linda Ashley

My name is Linda Ashley, and I have served as Mayor of Chatteris since May 2025. Each month, I will share news from the Town Council and updates about the work taking place across our town.

I

have been a Chatteris Town Councillor for 23 years. I was born in Chatteris, attended local schools and have lived here for most of my life. It has been a privilege to see the town develop and to play a part in projects that support local residents.

During that time, the Town Council has contributed towards the Leisure Centre, the all-weather pitch at Cromwell and two skateparks, as well as supporting many other sports facilities through its grant programme. The council also owns Little Acre Pocket Park and the Old Railway Line. Over the years, these have been developed into valuable outdoor spaces enjoyed by many people. Our allotments are another important council asset, managed by Town Clerk Joanna Melton alongside an allotment committee formed by the tenants. Three years ago, the council purchased the former Barclays Bank building for Chatteris Museum, which had previously been housed next to the council offices. The dedication and hard work of its volunteers have transformed the building into an impressive home for the town's history. It is well worth a visit to discover how Chatteris has changed over the years.

23 YEARS

SERVING CHATTERIS AS A TOWN COUNCILLOR Born, educated and based in the town

The Town Council regularly awards grants to community and sports organisations. At our latest meeting, we supported Chatteris Bowls Club, established in 1899, with funding towards new equipment. We also awarded a grant to Chatteris First Responders, run by Sally Monnery, to help provide equipment for CPR and defibrillator training. We continue to support the Summer Reading Challenge, and I recently had the pleasure of presenting medals to young readers who completed it. Encouraging children to enjoy books is a wonderful way to celebrate their effort and achievement.

A farewell that truly reflects a life...

I

n an age when families increasingly want farewells to feel meaningful rather than formulaic, personalised funerals have become an important part of how we remember those we love. At K E Rolfe Funeral Directors, that personal approach matters. A funeral should not simply follow a set pattern; it should reflect character, values, memories and the small details that made someone unique.

Personalisation can begin with the journey itself. For some families, a traditional hearse offers dignity and quiet formality. Others may choose a horsedrawn carriage, a more distinctive vehicle, or transport that carries a special significance. The choice of vehicle can say something powerful before a single word is spoken, setting the tone for a service that feels personal and considered. The coffin, too, can become part of the tribute. A light oak wood-effect coffin may suit those seeking a classic and respectful option, while alternative

styles, materials or environmentally conscious choices may better reflect a loved one’s beliefs or personality. These decisions are not about display; they are about meaning. What matters most is that families feel listened to. From music and flowers to transport, coffin choice and the shape of the ceremony itself, every detail can help tell a story. K E Rolfe Funeral Directors’ family-run, community-focused approach supports that aim, helping people create a farewell that is fitting, heartfelt and individual. A personalised funeral is, ultimately, an act of love. It gives families the chance to say goodbye in a way that feels right. FAMILIES TRUST TURNER & SON

ive generations of the Turner family have been helping families in Fenland cope with the pain and heartache of bereavement for nearly 140 years. The Turner & Son firm of funeral directors was set up by David Turner in 1887 and is now headed by descendants Mark and his son James.

They provide 24/7, 365 days a year personal service from its base at City Road, March which houses a private Chapel of Rest and luxury fleet of vehicles. Sister company Corinne Turner Floristry, run by Mark’s wife, and Richard King Memorials are also based on-site to provide additional services to support grieving families when they most need it.

James added: “After finishing university I wasn’t put under any pressure to join the business, but I tried it and found I loved it. I get a lot of job satisfaction by helping families who have lost a loved one.” Mark said that over the years there has been a move away from church ceremonies with cremations now being the most common form of service. The father-and-son, who are assisted by fellow funeral director Mark Belton (DipFD) and supported by a team of full and part-time staff, can provide pre-paid funeral plans and organise direct cremations locally.

Mark joined the business straight from school in 1979 with James following in 2023. Both believe the family continuity and personal service gives families peace of mind when planning a loved one’s funeral.

Turner & Son is a member of SAIF, the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors, and NAFD, the National Association of Funeral Directors, and primarily operates within a 25-mile radius of March but can also organise funerals further afield.

“People speak with people and our business is all about reputation,” said Mark. “We are there to help families at a time when they most need it, when they are vulnerable and need support.”

COMMUNITY

MATTERS

Celebrating the people and organisations that make Chatteris a stronger, more connected community.

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY MOVING

A volunteer-led transport service has been helping local residents retain their independence since 1985. WORDS: NORMAN LARKE, CHAIRMAN AND VOLUNTEER DRIVER

THE SCHEME IN NUMBERS

1985 ESTABLISHED 18 VOLUNTEER DRIVERS 700 APPROX. CLIENTS 260 AVERAGE TRIPS A MONTH VOLUNTEER DRIVERS USE THEIR OWN CARS TO SUPPORT LOCAL RESIDENTS

For more than four decades, the Chatteris Community Car Scheme has helped local people stay connected when public transport is difficult or unavailable. Established in 1985, it now supports about 700 clients and completes an average of 260 journeys each month across Chatteris, Doddington, Benwick, Manea and March. The service is powered entirely by volunteers, with 18 drivers using their own cars to provide friendly, door-to-door transport. Journeys can be arranged for GP, hospital and dental appointments, as well as shopping trips, hairdressing visits, care homes and time with friends. For many passengers, that dependable lift means more than reaching a destination: it offers independence, reassurance and valuable human contact. Passengers make a contribution of 40p per mile, with a minimum charge of £4, paid directly to the driver. Waiting time is not charged. As an example, a return trip from Chatteris to Hinchingbrooke Hospital, including waiting, costs £14. Drivers cannot lift or push wheelchairs and do not act as carers, so passengers must be able to travel without that assistance.

A LOCAL LIFELINE, MILE AFTER MILE

Every journey depends on volunteer availability and is arranged at the coordinator's discretion. At least 48 hours' notice is required, although as much notice as possible is always appreciated. Bookings must be made by telephone voicemail; texts cannot be accepted. Callers should speak slowly and clearly, leaving their name, address, telephone number, and the required date, time and destination. A volunteer will return the call within two working days. Drivers operate Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding evenings and weekends. The booking line is managed Monday to Thursday, 1pm to 5pm, and is closed on Fridays. Messages left from Friday to Sunday will be answered from Monday afternoon. Supported by Cambridgeshire County Council, Chatteris Town Council, Chatteris Rotary Club and Chatteris Feoffees Charity, the scheme is covered by Cambridgeshire County Council public liability insurance and works with Care Network. It is a practical service built on generosity, trust and genuine community spirit. To request a journey, leave a voicemail at any time on 07944 814156. The scheme's volunteers will then do everything possible to keep local residents moving.

Your Garden

T

here’s still plenty to do this month, including harvesting late crops, planting for next year and improving the soil.

The most important job, when beds become vacant, is improving your soil. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil lays the foundation for thriving plants, abundant harvests, and a vibrant ecosystem. Adding organic matter like manure or leaf mould helps with the soil structure and slowly releases nutrients. It also enhances the soil’s capability to retain water and air- crucial for good root development and uptake of nutrients. Fresh manure should not be used until it has been composted and never put fresh manure around edibles. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now. although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them. Potatoes should be stored in paper or jute sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free environment Carrots can be stored by spreading a layer of sand in a box and laying them on the sand, avoid them touching, and then cover them completely with another layer of sand, repeat until the box is full and then cover. You can also successfully keep root vegetables, except potatoes, in the ground by covering the roots with a layer of straw to protect the plants from frost. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

28

D I S C O V E R I N G Chatteris

• Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. • Sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket! Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Check the condition of last year’s fleece, cloches and winter protection so that you can plan for any cold spells that may be imminent. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.

Happy gardening!

Ready to turn your food waste into something remarkable? Start using your caddies now! Households across Fenland can now start filling their food waste recycling caddies, ready for Fenland District Council’s first food waste collections from Monday 7 September. Over the past six weeks, crews have delivered more than 90,000 caddies to over 45,000 homes across the district, together with a roll of indoor caddy liners and an instruction leaflet explaining how to get started. Cllr Steve Tierney, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling, said: “Our food is for eating, not for wasting, but every meal leaves a little something behind – and when it’s recycled, it can do something remarkable! It produces energy to power homes and businesses, and fertiliser for our farmers. “We know some people don’t have any waste as they use it for pets or compost or other clever ways. But for those that do, the weekly food waste collection is going to give you more space in your bins, keep the flies and maggots away and be a useful addition. “We’re introducing this service to meet Government legislation, but it’s free and optional – and we’re confident those choosing to take part will love it.” Recycling your food waste is simple. Fill your indoor caddy with food scraps, then empty it into your outdoor caddy whenever you like – just as you would with any other bin. We recommend lining your indoor caddy to help keep it clean. Use the liners provided or reuse any plastic or paper bag as all liners are removed at the recycling facility before the food waste is processed. Then put your outdoor caddy out for collection every week, on the same day as your blue or green bin, with the bin handle up so crews can pick it up easily. If you’ve not received your food waste caddies, call 01354 654321 or email foodwaste@fenland.gov.uk to arrange delivery before collections begin. Please note, town centre flats and communal properties are not starting food waste collections yet. Caddy deliveries to these properties will form phase two of the service rollout in the winter. You can find more information on the service, including FAQs, on our website.

KIRSTY MAKES A NAME FOR HERSELF

K

irsty Parnell has overcome a number of obstacles to set up in business.

The 38-year-old had to contend with opposition on her way to launching her Watts Her Name electrical business. She said: “I had wanted to become an electrician for quite a while but faced a number of hurdles for being female, being too old and suffering from chronic fatigue and headaches.” However, the Whittlesey woman stayed focused and after completing a four-year apprenticeship with local firm GDC Electrical started her own business last year. Kirsty, who previously worked as a carer at homes in Whittlesey and Ramsey, had her interest sparked by watching her late father Stephen conduct DIY work at home. She said: “I like to do hands-on work, to get things working. Power is essential and I really enjoy what I do.” Kirsty can carry out all types of electrical work for domestic and commercial properties including full and partial rewires, PAT

testing, EICR testing and new installations. She added: “I’ve picked up quite a lot of work via Facebook and word of mouth and am about to start my biggest project which includes work on an Airbnb conversion. I am available for work in the local area including March, Ramsey and Peterborough, in fact anywhere within an hour’s drive from home.” Outside of work, Kirsty enjoys reading, Lego building and organising an annual Hallowe’en display for charity. Recipe

Loaded Spuds OCTOBER VIBES

Simple comfort food doesn’t come in a finer form than a baked potato. Perfect as the weather starts to get a little chillier... stuff them with bacon, cheese and soured cream and dig in!

Method

1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Rinse the potatoes, then sprinkle all over with sea salt. Put the potatoes directly onto the oven shelf and bake for about 1 hour until crisp on the outside and soft inside when tested with a skewer. Serves 4

Ingredients

4 baking potatoes Sea salt for sprinkling 100g bacon lardons 80g unsalted butter, cubed 80g grated Cheddar, plus an extra 2 tbsp for topping 4 tbsp soured cream, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve Sourced from www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk

D I S C O V E R I N G Chatteris

2 Meanwhile, fry the bacon lardons in a non-stick frying pan until crisp. 3 Once the potatoes are ready, turn the oven to grill, remove the potatoes from the oven and transfer to a baking tray. Slice off the tops (hold the potatoes steady using a clean tea towel), then carefully scoop the soft potato centres into a bowl. Add the butter, 80g cheese and soured cream to the bowl and mix well. Stir in the chives and lardons, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the cheesy filling back into the potato shells, then top with the extra cheese. 4 Grill the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden and bubbling hot. Serve with the extra soured cream and chives.

THE LILIES ARE LOOKING FOR NEW PLAYERS

CHATTERIS TOWN F.C. IS RECRUITING MEN AND WOMEN THE BRAMLEY HOUSE QUIZZES WILL SUPPORT SAM AND HIS FAMILY

The Bramley House's monthly quiz nights will now support local young man Sam Baker in his fight against acute myeloid leukaemia. Quizzes are held on the second Sunday of each month at 6.30pm. Teams of up to four pay £1.25 per person, with breakfast, cocktail and Prosecco prizes. October's quiz is Sunday 11 October - a relaxed evening of general knowledge that will help Sam and his family through an incredibly difficult time.

Chatteris Town Football Club is inviting new players to pull on its famous sky-blue and white shirt ahead of the new season. The men's First Team, Reserves and A Team are looking to strengthen their squads, while the Ladies team would also love to welcome new players. Whether you are experienced, returning after time away or looking for a new challenge, the Lilies want to hear from you. Email info@chatteristownfc.co.uk, contact the club on Facebook or follow @wearechatteristown on Instagram.

ABIGAIL TURNS HER MS DIAGNOSIS INTO A FORCE FOR GOOD After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2026, local woman Abigail Miller and her family have chosen to turn an incredibly difficult time into something positive. While adjusting to life with MS, Abigail has raised awareness and funds for organisations supporting others affected by the condition. Her family are standing firmly beside her and have organised a fundraising evening in Chatteris. The event takes place at Chatteris Conservative Club on Saturday 3 October. Doors open at 6pm, with the quiz at 6.30pm. Teams of up to eight can enter for £2 per person; raffle prizes are warmly welcomed. Proceeds will be shared between the MS Trust, MS-UK and the MS Society, which provide information, support and vital research. Abigail has also donated her hair to charity — another generous act that is helping others affected by MS feel seen and supported.

CHOOSE DIAMOND

FOR QUALITY FLOORING There’s a new local business that’s been launched to offer a quality range of all types of flooring and carpets to home and business owners. Diamond Flooring and Carpets Ltd has been set up by March man Neil Winning who has more than twenty years’ experience in the sector. He formed the company last August, since when he has enjoyed an encouraging start, mainly via recommendaons, and now he is keen to spread details of his business to a wider audience. Neil (47) said: “It has been a prey good start as I already had established relaonships with a number of quality suppliers, experienced fiers and previous customers. I have been part of a networking group for the past twelve years in Cambridge and have picked up a lot of recommendaons from tradespeople but now I want to focus on more organic growth.” He is supported in the mobile business by a team of four sub-contracted fiers and picks up work primarily within an hour’s radius of Hunngdon, covering an area that includes Peterborough, Cambridge and King’s Lynn, but can also cover a wider geographical area. Diamond Flooring & Carpets Ltd can supply and install a wide range of flooring types for both residenal properes and commercial buildings including carpet supply and fing; engineered and solid wood; luxury vinyl (LVT) and vinyl sheet; laminate flooring; safety and commercial flooring; and preparaon and finishing. It can also provide a wooden flooring restoraon service. Neil and his team can visit your home or place of business to carry out surveys, take precise measurements, and bring a selecon of flooring samples directly to your door. From there, they’ll provide you with a transparent and compeve quote for a variety of flooring opons. Should a customer choose to place an order, the company can provide a professional fing service for the flooring of their choice — and all products and installaons come with a full guarantee for customers’ peace of mind. I can’t recommend Neil and his team highly enough. If you are looking for a genuinely professional company to look aer all of your flooring needs, from beginning to end Neil offers a truly first rate service. Diamond Flooring and Carpets most definitely get 5 stars from me!

HELLO CHATTERIS! WE’RE VINE LAW...

f you’re reading this in Chatteris, you might not have come across Vine Law before – so hello! We’re a small and friendly modern law firm based in Cambridgeshire, with offices in Wisbech and Ely, helping individuals, families and businesses with practical, straightforward legal advice.

We’re big believers that using a solicitor shouldn’t feel daunting or overly formal. The law can be complicated enough without adding unnecessary jargon into the mix, so our aim is to explain things clearly, get to know you and your circumstances, and find solutions that work in the real world.

So, what can we help with? Quite a lot! Our team advises on a broad range of legal matters, including wills and probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Deputyship, Inheritance Tax Planning, Property, Employment Law and HR, Dispute Avoidance and Resolution, and Commercial Law. Whether you’re buying or selling a house, thinking about making a will, dealing with an employment issue, sorting out your business documents, or simply have a legal question that you’re not quite sure who to ask, we’re always happy to have a chat.

“But you’re based in Ely…” Yes – and that’s absolutely fine! Our Ely office is at E Space South, 26 St Thomas Place, and we’re very happy to welcome clients from Chatteris and the surrounding area. We also understand that getting to an office isn’t always convenient. Depending on the circumstances and the type of matter, our lawyers can meet with you at your home or workplace, as well as offering telephone and video appointments. So, if getting to Ely is tricky, don’t let that put you off giving us a call.

A little bit about us Vine Law was created with a simple idea: legal services should be more personal, more accessible and less intimidating. We want to get to know our clients, understand what matters to them and make the legal process as straightforward as possible. We’re proud to be a local firm serving our communities and we’re delighted that Discovering Chatteris has given us the opportunity to introduce ourselves. If you’d like to find out more about Vine Law or have a question about how we could help, we’d love to hear from you. You can call (01353) 240079, or email hello@vinelaw.co.uk

COMMUNITY MATTERS COMMUNITY MATTERS

CELEBRATING CHATTERIS PEOPLE, CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY

GIANT GRASSHOPPER LIGHTS UPLIGHTS CHATTERIS GIANT GRASSHOPPER UP CHATTERIS

THE FOUR-METRE LANTERN BROUGHT FENLAND WILDLIFE TO THE HEART OF TOWN

An enormous illuminated grasshopper was among the more unusual visitors to Chatteris earlier this year, bringing a touch of Fenland wildlife - on a spectacular scale - to the town centre. The four-metre-long, two-metre-high lantern was created for Chatteris's Light Up the Town celebration by artists from Light Whale International, working alongside local volunteers. Inspired by the Large Marsh Grasshopper, a species native to the Fens, the finished creation was around 80 times larger than the real insect. Its arrival was the striking finale to weeks of free community workshops, where residents of all ages learned how to shape delicate frames and transform them into glowing sculptures. Children, families and volunteers worked side by side, discovering new techniques and seeing their ideas gradually come to life.

The giant grasshopper joined a colourful collection of handmade, nature-inspired lanterns, including a life-sized elephant and an intricate willow microbe. The project was delivered through Marketplace Arts, bringing communities together across three Fenland towns during 2026. More than 1,200 residents and visitors took part in or attended the events, celebrating local creativity in a wonderfully memorable way. For Chatteris, the evening was about far more than the impressive finished lanterns. It showed what can happen when artists, volunteers, families and neighbours share their ideas and skills. Against the night sky, the glowing grasshopper became a joyful symbol of imagination, teamwork and the distinctive landscape surrounding the town. It was certainly one visitor nobody could miss.

Make new connections. Grow your brand.

Good News for Those Who Drive for Work Ben Beech If you use your own car for work there’s some welcome news that could put extra money back in your pocket. For the first time since 2011, the government has increased the amount you can be reimbursed for business mileage without paying tax on it. From April 2026, the approved rate has risen from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles you drive each year. It may not sound dramatic, but after fifteen years of the rate sitting frozen while petrol prices, insurance, and servicing costs all climbed steadily, it’s a change many readers will welcome.

What Does It Mean in Practice? Say you drive 8,000 miles a year for work. Under the old rate, your employer could reimburse you £3,600 tax-free. Under the new rate, that rises to £4,400, an extra £800, without either you or your employer paying a penny more in tax. The rate applies to cars and vans, whether petrol, diesel, or electric. It doesn’t apply to your regular commute to and from your usual workplace, but client visits, deliveries, travelling between sites, and similar journeys all qualify.

What Should You Do? If your employer pays your mileage, it’s worth checking what rate they’re currently using. Some businesses may not have updated their records since the change came in, meaning employees may be receiving less than the full tax-free allowance. If your employer reimburses you at less than 55p per mile, you can claim tax relief from HMRC on the difference, so it’s worth checking, especially if you’ve been reimbursed at the old 45p rate since April. If you’re self-employed you can use the new 55p rate when calculating your business expenses, reducing the amount of income you’re taxed on.

A Simple Check Worth Making It doesn’t take long to review how your mileage is being handled, and for many people it could result in a meaningful saving. If you’re unsure whether you’re claiming correctly, speaking to a local accountant is a good first step, and our colleagues at Whitings LLP would be happy to assist you.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT

By Gareth Johnson - CWMC Committee

80 YEARS AT THE HEART OF CHATTERIS THE STORY OF THE WORKIES CLUB

T

he Chatteris Working Men's Club affectionately known as the Workies has stood at the centre of town life for 80 years. Its story begins with agricultural workers looking for a place of their own and runs through decades of sport, entertainment and community spirit.

THE 1950S: TEAMS AND TRADITIONS The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated in 1953 with events for members and the town, including STINGO Old Strong Ale at two shillings. A women's darts team had formed in 1951, joining successful men's teams, football, dominoes, snooker and other pub games. The club competed strongly in national and regional competitions, including the Haigh Cup.

1946: A CLUB IS BORN

MEMBERS BUILT THE NEXT CHAPTER

In the early 1940s, agricultural gangs of 20 to 30 men worked the fields around Chatteris. Their close-knit meetings often continued at home after work, where the day's matters were discussed over home brew. The idea of a formal club grew from those gatherings. In summer 1946, the Old Crown Theatre was leased from Archie Porter for £3 a week. Greene King supplied the beer, a full-time steward was appointed and the club officially opened on 12 October 1946 by local MP Major Legge-Bourke.

Expansion in the 1960s was very much a members' effort. Volunteers helped with roofing, modernisation and a new games room, while farmer John Childs officially opened the enlarged concert hall. Friday buffets, Saturday live entertainment and Sunday discos became a familiar weekly pattern. In 1965, the club bought the neighbouring Crown Building for £2,000, adding offices, accommodation and High Street retail space.

THE HEYDAY - AND SPORTING MEMORIES

A PERMANENT HOME

By the 1970s, entertainment nights drew visitors from as far as Birmingham and Manchester. One in ten Chatteris residents was said to be a member, with a waiting list in the hundreds. Members built a new lounge and bar in 1973. Further expansion followed in the 1980s, when snooker legend Steve Davis took part in a demonstration evening on the club's tables.

The Crown Theatre had emerged from the break-up of the Morgans Brewery site in 1925. When Archie Porter died in 1951, his will instructed that the building be sold to the club for the agreed sum of £875. Members had already invested considerable effort in improvements; by 1958, the property and their renovations were valued at £3,000.

Station Street, Chatteris, PE16 6NA

MOVING WITH THE TIMES During the 1990s, electrical systems were renewed and the club invested in accessibility, cellar and bar improvements. An external smoking area was also completed ahead of later changes in the law.

THE WORKIES TODAY COMMUNITY | EVENTS | MEMBERSHIP

ROOTED IN THE PAST. BUILDING THE FUTURE. The Workies continues to adapt while remaining true to its purpose: a club run for members, by members. Since reopening after the Covid restrictions, it has combined familiar traditions with new facilities, charity fundraising and a lively community programme.

EQUALITY, ANGLING AND ACCESS Women were granted membership rights at Chatteris in the 1950s - decades before equal full membership was settled across the wider CIU movement in 2007. In 2012, the club acquired fishing rights to two sections of Forty-Foot Bank, where members can still purchase licences.

COMMUNITY FIRST Recent charity events include Rockin' for Headway, which raised more than £2,000 for the Brain Injury Association. The function room is offered free to members and non-members who need a venue for a wake. A Wash.ME laundry facility in the car park also answers a practical need in the town.

A CLUB WITH SOMETHING HAPPENING Bingo runs three times a week, while Chatteris Tabletop Games Club meets weekly for board games, war games, cards and role play. The function room has hosted England's World Cup matches, a successful Chatteris Craft Fayre and sell-out amateur boxing nights from Sparta A.B.C., complete with a full-size ring and competitors from across the UK.

DATES FOR THE DIARY 21st November - Psychic Medium Night 28th November - The Club will be supporting the Chatteris Christmas Lights switch on, hosting a Live DJ set from Stars on 45 DJ Vern. Open to members and non-members alike. Christmas Eve - DJ Vern will be back.
