Welcome
to your October issue...
I
t’s been an exciting month for our Discovering Magazines team as the first issue of our latest title, “Discovering Chatteris” finds its way into the homes and businesses of this small, friendly Cambridgeshire market town.
No sooner have holiday things been stored away and new school shoes and uniforms ‘broken in’, than we now turn to local schools and their Open Days for next September’s potential intake! If you are looking to give up smoking, “Stoptober” is the campaign for you and so much help is available by visiting websites such as www.campaignresources.dhsc.gov.uk/ campaigns/stoptober-2026. With the money you’ll have saved, treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en, October 31st. Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we ‘lose the hour’ on Sunday October 25th.

Getting older sometimes gets people worrying that their sanity might not be as good as it once was. I’d like to think that I’ve not lost too many of my marbles … unlike one of my neighbours. Last week, I heard her having a conversation with her cat, clearly thinking that her cat understood her – “Crazy woman”, I thought! When I got back, I discussed it with my two dogs and they both agreed with me! Congratulations to Bourne Men’s Cricket First Team on winning this season’s Lincs Premier League Premier Division, after a very close final game against Scunthorpe. And finally, Joe told me he’d had a delicious Asteroid Pie recently – a bit like Steak and Ale Pie … just a little meatier! He once tried to date a pretty dental receptionist – she told him she’d see him in six months! Enjoy the read!

Choose the Study Pathway for You The SLAT Sixth Form at Bourne Academy offers a choice or three study pathways and twenty-three different subjects. There is often debate amongst students and their teachers about what are the best qualifications or subjects to study at Sixth Form or College. The SLAT Sixth Form at Bourne Academy can give students the freedom of choosing their preferred study pathway that best suits them with a wide choice of subjects, plus they can study three or four subjects. As a Sixth Form with over 350 students, they are
able to offer more subject choices and, best of all, students can choose whether to choose an ACADEMIC PATHWAY (with A-levels only), a VOCATIONAL PATHWAY (with BTECs only) or a COMBINATION PATHWAY (with a mix of A-levels and BTECs). We looked at three students from the Class of 2026 at Bourne Academy who all chose different study pathways.
Elana Cox
Elana improved her chances of gaining a place at her first-choice university by studying four subjects on the ACADEMIC PATHWAY. As well as studying four subjects, she was a member of the debating team and involved in the school as a reading ambassador. After achieving an A* in A-level History, A* in A-level English Literature, A in A-level English Language and an A in Sociology, she is now studying Law at the University of Bristol, a prestigious ‘Russell Group’ university.
Adam Mussa Beaumont
Adam studied four subjects on the COMBINATION PATHWAY with a balanced mix of creative and analytical subjects to gain skills in areas such as spatial creativity, measurements and structural understanding. He achieved a Distinction* in BTEC Art & Design, A in A-level Mathematics, A in A-level Physics and B in A-level Chemistry. Adam is now studying Architecture at Loughborough University.
Meredith Marsh
Meredith was destined to be a star ever since she started dancing at the age of 4, and her passion continued for drama and music by appearing as leads in many musical productions. Not only is she a talented performer, but she has excelled academically on the VOCATIONAL PATHWAY as she achieved a Distinction* in BTEC Performing Arts, a Distinction* in BTEC Creative Digital Media Production and a Distinction in BTEC Music Performance. To take the next step of pursuing her dreams of acting on stage or screen, she is now studying Acting at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Brenda Bratherton
Poem
Charity Worker/Poet
Last month, we featured one of our readers, Brenda Bratherton, who writes poetry, initially to take her mind off the awful experiences she was facing as a charity worker in Egypt. Here is here first offering, dealing with a subject much closer to home:
of the Month
oor D t x e N l r i Th e G
I’ve fallen in love with a girl next door Big brown eyes and legs to die for Manicured nails, shiny black hair The way she sits, her gentle stare.
I like the way she makes me feel Biscuits that she tries to steal Rolling around on the ground Confession time … she is my hound.
I think her family know about me I have to be careful because you see I've only known her a short time I love her, and she wants to be mine.
Tinkerbell, I dedicate this to you Looking after me like you do Your beautiful eyes, understanding ways Have given me these happy days.
Telling her folks she's moving out Will cause upset, there's no doubt But a girl’s gotta do what girls must do I know it's right and she does too.
Thank you Tinks.
We walk the lane, happy together I feel her touch, light as a feather Decision made, we love each other We just need to tell her mother. Tinky, my pet name for her, Changed my life beyond compare Finding love I've never known before With my beautiful girl next door
Tinky (“Tinks”) is a very well behaved and exceptionally loyal Patterdale/Jack Russell cross, about eighteen years old, who belongs to Brenda’s daughter. She was adopted as a “rescue dog” who now spends most of her days sleeping in one of her many beds!

WINES FROM THAILAND
T
A Good Choice! hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia. Today, manufacturing, tourism and agriculture are leading parts of Thailand’s economy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally.
Monsoon Valley is a multi-awardwinning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in air-conditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid classic, premium and flagship wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs and are also available in 5-star hotels and restaurants, in Thailand and many countries worldwide, including the UK. Monsoon Valley White (12% vol) wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate sensation, and is excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red (13%
10 52
vol) wine has ripe, red fruits for the bouquet and the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé (12% vol) wine will not disappoint. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel and palate, and is a wine that is extremely popular for numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz (13.5% vol) from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. It is fantastic with red meats.
D I S C O V E R I N G March
Muscat (15% vol) is a ‘flagship’ delectation and a very popular fortified dessert wine, having aromatic nasal delights of ripe, tropical fruits, which continue on, for the palate’s enjoyment. I found this to be an ideal ‘towards ending’ or finishing of a dining occasion. When a sparkling wine is required, Monsoon Valley Brut Prestige (11.5% vol) pleases, absolutely. Utilising 100% early-picked Colombard grapes, this sparking production has gained many devotees. I found this wine to be hugely refreshing and to be a perfect accompaniment to fish, salads, seafood, sushi, sashimi, plus white meats and great for celebrations, occasions and parties. For details of all wines from Monsoon Valley Winery, including (easy) ordering and stockists, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk www.siamwinery.com
As always, enjoy!

Clinic Care for all your Foot Health Needs Foot Bliss Bourne is a clinic-based foot care service
N
icola London understands the pressure we put on our feet and the damage that everyday wear and tear can have on our overall foot health, from her long experience as a runner. Foot care is for everyone, young and old. It is important to maintain good foot health at an early age to avoid complications later in life. Good foot health involves you looking out for: any changes to your feet, both physical changes and pain; cracked, dry skin; sore ingrown toenails; and thickened and discoloured nails, which could indicate a fungal condition. Diabetics should take extra care, as any changes could be an early indication that there is an underlying issue. From her welcoming, relaxing clinic, based in Burchnell Gardens in Bourne, Nicola’s treatments include fungal nails, thickened nails, verrucae, ingrown toenails, general foot health and nail trimming, diabetic foot health assessments, neuropathy testing, corn removal, and callus reduction. All Nicola asks is that “You bring only yourself and your medical history to the clinic; I do the rest while you sit back and relax and enjoy a complimentary foot massage at the end of your treatment. Many clients comment that they leave feeling they are walking on air!” There is currently capacity for new clients and Nicola is happy to discuss any foot health concerns that you may have.

BOOK REVIEWS
OCTOBER 2026
THE PREDICAMENT BY WILLIAM BOYD Few writers do espionage fiction quite like William Boyd. In his latest thriller, the travel writer-turned-reluctant spy, Gabriel Dax is pulled from investigating political unrest in Guatemala to a chilling assassination plot in Cold War Berlin. Smart, atmospheric and utterly absorbing, this is suspense fiction layered with history, moral ambiguity and impeccable storytelling.
ATMOSPHERE
OCTOBER, OCTOBER
BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID
BY KATYA BALEN
October and her dad live in the woods. They know the trees and the rocks and the lake and stars like best friends. They are wild, that is until she turns eleven, the year October rescues a baby owl. It's the year Dad falls out of the biggest tree in their woods, and the year the woman who calls herself October's mother comes back. The year everything changes. A timeless tale of wild nature and family secrets, “October, October” is an enthralling read from a distinctive voice in children’s fiction.
16
Taylor Jenkins Reid rarely does small emotions, and “Atmosphere” is no exception. Set against the 1980s space shuttle programme, this sweeping novel follows astronaut Joan Goodwin as ambition, heartbreak and an unexpected love story reshape everything she thought she knew about her future. If your ideal romance comes with emotional devastation, high-stakes love and far-flung destinations, this one is for you.

Control of Your Addiction
Y
ou can turn off your desire for an addiction by taking control of your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is like a child and sometimes needs to be told what to do!
Your brain is constantly changing and adapting, depending on what’s going on in your everyday life and it creates new neural connections. Without treatment, the brain uses neural pathways to trigger emotions, needs, pleasure, and cravings, which feed the addiction.
“Change your triggers” You could be addicted to smoking, gambling, alcohol, compulsive shopping, sugar, Red Bull, caffeine, food, or even the overuse of gadgets. No matter what your addiction is, when it begins to disrupt your life and
relationships it’s time to take control by changing your thoughts and behaviours. Some people use an addiction to forget a problem, to mask pain, dampen down emotions or to reduce stress and anxiety. Solution focused hypnotherapy reduces stress and anxiety and looks at the emotions or triggers fuelling the addiction, allowing you greater control over the addiction. Today, hypnotherapy for addiction is a growing trend. With hypnosis, we aim to get to the root of the problem through hypnotic trance. In this state, your mind is more receptive to suggestions, changing ingrained behavioural patterns and rebuilding your emotional health.
“Take control today”

ZOE WANTS TO SUPPORT YOU ON YOUR HEALTH AND WELLBEING JOURNEY
M
Hi I’m Zoe, I thought I’d introduce myself. We moved to Bourne in March of 2025 after falling in love with the area, the schools for our son and the community spirit.
y true passion is reflexology and I’m a level 5 Clinical Reflexologist practioner of Holistic Sole Reflexology based from my home in Bourne. I love the freedom this gives to work around my family and working from home provides a sense of security for clients who prefer a one-to-one appointment with no outside distractions. In order to give my clients the best possible treatment, continual professional development furthers my knowledge and skills within the complementary therapy industry. This allows me to provide treatments to keep you feeling like the best version of you. So far, this has included hot and cold stone reflexology and I am now excited to add Mia Dui Facial treatment to my skillset. This treatment is a facial ritual which includes a sculpting facial massage, facial reflexology, acupressure and scalp massage, lymphatic drainage, and crystal guasha.
WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU AS A REFLEXOLOGIST? ● Promote wellbeing and balance ● Reduce stress
For those that don’t know, clinical reflexology means that after the initial consultation and assessment as a reflexologist, I can tailor reflexology treatments to meet your specific needs.
● Aid sleep ● Boost mood ● Enhance relaxation ● Help you feel revitalised
Clinical observation is one of the most important skills a reflexologist develops. It starts before treatment begins and continues throughout every therapeutic treatment. Observation is more than noticing physical characteristics. It involves recognising movement, posture, tissue quality, temperature, communication and changes over time - while always considering these observations alongside a thorough consultation, client history and professional clinical reasoning. Importantly, observation is not diagnosis.
28
and rejuvenated
Instead, it helps me to ask better questions, adapt my approach and respond to you as an individual in front of me. Professional reflexology is built on curiosity, critical thinking and reflective practice. When we talk about toxins, reflexology guides the body back to its natural rhythm and balance, enabling the body’s systems to work as intended. Water helps to flush any toxins released after treatment through the lymphatic system.

any people spend years working hard, paying the mortgage, raising a family and putting money aside whenever they can. Yet surprisingly few ever stop to ask one simple question:
“Is my money actually helping me achieve the life I want?” Financial planning isn’t just about pensions, investments or tax. It’s about making informed decisions today that can give you more choices tomorrow and in the future. Whether your goal is retiring comfortably, helping your children onto the property ladder, reducing the impact of Inheritance Tax or simply feeling more confident about your financial future, having a clear plan can make all the difference. Many people have pensions from previous employers, workplace schemes, ISAs and savings built up over many years. But without looking at everything together, it can be difficult to know whether you’re making the most of what you’ve worked so hard to build. A well-structured financial plan helps answer some of life’s most important questions: Am I on track for retirement? Will I have enough income? Am I using my money appropriately to achieve my goals? Could my family face an unnecessary inheritance tax bill? Am I making the best use of the allowances available to me? There is rarely a single right answer. Every individual and every
family has different priorities, which is why financial planning should always be personal, tailored and built around your own objectives. I work with individuals, families and business owners across Lincolnshire and the surrounding counties. My role is to help clients understand where they are today, identify where they want to be in the future, and create a clear plan to help bridge the gap. I pride myself on holistic financial planning and relationshipbased advice. I believe it’s the people behind the numbers that matter most, and I take the time to understand what’s important to you. Throughout this monthly series of articles, I’ll be exploring some of the financial topics that affect many of us at different stages of life, including retirement planning, investments, protection, inheritance tax and passing wealth to the next generation. My aim is to explain these subjects in a straightforward, practical way, helping you make more informed financial decisions with confidence. In November’s edition, we will focus on retirement planning. I’ll give an overview on the do’s and don’ts when it comes to retirement planning that I hope will assist you in your everyday life or give you direction. If there is a particular question that you need assistance with, or a particular pension you would
like to discuss, feel free to get in touch.

How You Can Help to Keep the Wheels Turning The Butterfield Centre is a local charity that has been an independent provider of ‘Meals on Wheels’ in Bourne for over twenty years, striving to provide hot meals at lunchtime, seven days a week, three-hundred and sixty-two days a year.
T
o provide this important service to the town, the Butterfield Centre has always relied on a team of dedicated volunteers, normally about an hour a session, for the benefit of others.
We at The Butterfield Centre are not only looking to expand our team of volunteers but also our list of clients. If you would like to volunteer to be part of this important service or to be in receipt of our meals, then please call 01778 421422 or email, office@thebutterfield.org. Our Meals on Wheels service provides invaluable support to many older adults, people with disabilities, or those recovering from illness or returning home after a hospital stay, who may find it difficult to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. Beyond nutrition, Meals on Wheels offers something equally important … a human connection. For individuals who may live alone or feel isolated, a friendly face at the door and a brief chat can make a significant difference to their mental wellbeing. These regular check-ins can also provide reassurance to families, knowing that someone is looking out for their loved ones.
The Butterfield Community Pantry also aims
to tackle the issue of food waste, by offering food that may otherwise have gone to waste, to residents of Bourne. This service has grown from strength to strength and is now open six days a week at various times of the day. Anyone in the community can visit, no matter what your circumstances and all the charity ask for is a suggested contribution of £3, to help keep this and other services running.
We are also proud to have located in our building;
• Bourne Foodbank,
an independent charity under the Trussell Trust. They help to address food poverty by providing emergency assistance through the provision of food parcels to individuals and families in the parish of Bourne.
• Age Care Advice,
a local business providing support with adult care where and when required.
We also have a communal garden located at the Butterfield, which not only provides fresh produce for our pantry but also a calming environment for our volunteers and service users to take time out which can support their mental wellbeing. For further information on all the above services, please visit our website, www.thebutterfield.org. 32

Wild About Learning
W
itham Hall is delighted to announce the appointment of a dedicated Outdoor Learning Practitioner, who is now leading regular, timetabled Forest School sessions for pupils from Reception through to Year 3. Set in the school's own ‘Witham Wilderness’ – a truly unique green space where learning really comes alive – these sessions are fast becoming a highlight of the week for our youngest pupils!
Each session gives children the chance to explore wildlife observation, plant identification, team building and hands-on problem solving, all designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and deepen their connection with nature.
OC TOB ER 2026
Crucially, Forest School is child-led. Rather than following a fixed set of instructions, pupils are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning, choosing what to investigate, how to work together, and how to tackle the challenges they encounter. It's an approach that builds independence and resilience alongside a genuine love of the outdoors, all within a safe and carefully supervised environment. The new sessions run alongside the school's popular Monday morning toddler sessions, meaning the ‘Witham Wilderness’ is now buzzing with young explorers, from toddler age right through to Year 3 and beyond!

Your Garden
T
here’s still plenty to do this month, including harvesting late crops, planting for next year and improving the soil.
The most important job, when beds become vacant, is improving your soil. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil lays the foundation for thriving plants, abundant harvests, and a vibrant ecosystem. Adding organic matter like manure or leaf mould helps with the soil structure and slowly releases nutrients. It also enhances the soil’s capability to retain water and air- crucial for good root development and uptake of nutrients. Fresh manure should not be used until it has been composted and never put fresh manure around edibles. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now. although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them. Potatoes should be stored in paper or jute sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free environment Carrots can be stored by spreading a layer of sand in a box and laying them on the sand, avoid them touching, and then cover them completely with another layer of sand, repeat until the box is full and then cover. You can also successfully keep root vegetables, except potatoes, in the ground by covering the roots with a layer of straw to protect the plants from frost. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.
34
• Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. • Sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket! Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Check the condition of last year’s fleece, cloches and winter protection so that you can plan for any cold spells that may be imminent. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.
Happy gardening!

The Pension Rule Nobody Told You About
T
he clocks are about to go back, the evenings are drawing in, and if you are anything like me, October is the month the jumpers come out, and the central heating goes on for the first time without feeling guilty about it. It has also, quietly, become one of the most important months for anyone who has ever put money into a pension. Here is why. For as long as most of us have been saving into a pension, it has sat neatly outside your estate. If you died with money still in it, it usually passed to whoever you had nominated without Inheritance Tax taking a slice. It was one of the few genuinely simple bits of planning: save into your pension, name your loved ones, done. That is changing. From April 2027, most unused pension funds will be counted as part of your estate
NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
for Inheritance Tax purposes, just like your house or your savings. If your estate is over the tax-free threshold, whatever is left in your pension could be taxed at 40%, the same as everything else. I know what you might be thinking: “That is a ‘wealthy people’ problem, not mine”. And for most families, it genuinely will not change anything. But it does not take a fortune to tip over the threshold once you add a pension pot to a paid-off house and some savings. It is exactly the kind of quiet, creeping change that catches ordinary families out, not because they were careless, but because nobody told them the rules had moved. There is a second, more urgent point too. Many people, quite sensibly, named their children or grandchildren directly on their pension rather than their spouse, because it used to be the most taxefficient way to pass money down. From April 2027, that same nomination could trigger a tax bill that a straightforward gift to a spouse would not. If you have not looked at your pension nomination form in a few years, October is a good excuse to dig it out. None of this needs to feel overwhelming, however. Think of it less as a tax problem and more as one more piece of “futureproofing” for the people you love, a bit like checking the boiler before winter really sets in, so nobody is left in the cold. A short conversation now, while there is still time before 2027, can save your family a great deal of stress (and money) later. If you would like to understand what these changes could mean for you, give us a call on 01778 252301 or scan the QR code to book a convenient time to talk it through.

The First Fourteen Days
Why pricing correctly from ‘day one’ could save you thousands and get you moving faster
E
very homeowner wants to achieve the very best price for their property. Unfortunately, many are still being told exactly what they want to hear, rather than what today’s market is prepared to pay.
The latest market figures for Bourne paint an interesting picture. While the number of properties available for sale has increased significantly over the last year, the number of completed property transactions has fallen. In simple terms, there are more homes competing for fewer buyers. That doesn’t mean houses aren’t selling. It means buyers have become more selective than ever before.
Why the first two weeks matter
When your property first comes to the market, every active buyer receives an alert. Your home appears at the top of property portal searches and attracts the highest levels of attention. Those first fourteen days generate more interest than almost any other period of your marketing campaign. If your property is priced correctly, buyers compete. If it’s overpriced, they simply move on. Weeks become months, price reductions follow, and buyers begin asking the question every seller dreads: ‘What’s wrong with it?’
Case Study – Elsea Park, Bourne
A recent instruction on Elsea Park perfectly demonstrates this approach. The owners invited four local estate agents to value their property. Whilst other agents suggested higher asking prices, we provided an honest, evidence-based valuation based on buyer demand, comparable sales and current market conditions. Before the property had even officially launched, we had already matched it with buyers from our database. Viewings were arranged immediately and the property achieved
its full asking price within the first week of marketing. Our focus wasn’t on winning the instruction with the highest valuation. It was on achieving the best possible outcome for our client.
Buyers shop offline too
At Newton Fallowell, Bourne, 40% of the properties we sell are purchased by buyers already registered with our office before the property reaches the open market. That’s why our marketing starts long before your property appears online. We proactively match buyers with suitable homes, often arranging viewings before a property has gained momentum on the portals.
Selling is only half the job Agreeing a sale is just the beginning. We also work with solicitors, mortgage advisers, surveyors and other estate agents to keep chains moving. Even if your onward purchase is being marketed by another agent, we’ll negotiate on your behalf and do everything possible to help secure your next home and keep your move on track.
Thinking of moving?
The first fourteen days could determine the success of your move. Make sure they’re spent with the right estate agent. Please contact our team today on 01778 422567.

Now is a great time to winter-proof your property with a series of checks and actions. Safe Local Trades can offer experts at the touch of a button across the PE area to help make your home awesome in autumn and ward off the worries of winter. By preparing your property, both inside and out, you can save on effort, energy, and be kind to your pocket. Here is a pre-winter maintenance checklist for your home and garden which could avoid a November nightmare or December disaster; with our Safe Local Trades members offering rescue and remedy: • Check all external pipes. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. • Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in a draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes and make sure that taps don’t leak. • Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. • Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. • Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows – so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. Meanwhile, here’s a seasonal maintenance checklist: • Check the stopcock is working. • Check the window frames and doors are sealed well. • Use draft excluders under doorways and around letterboxes. • Clean and put away any outside furniture. • Inspect the roof for damage or leaks that could worsen over the winter. • Ensure all locks, security lights, and alarm systems are working properly. • Check there are no leaks in the guttering joints when it’s raining. Celebrating Fifty Years of Helping Keep Vintage and Classic Cars on the Road If you have a Vintage or Classic Car you will probably know about Woolies, the Market Deeping company selling trim, upholstery and fittings for Vintage and Classic Cars. The company is one of Britain’s best-known Vintage and Classic Car suppliers and is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.
F
ounded in October 1976 by Ian and Caroline Woolstenholmes, the family business has spent five decades helping Vintage and Classic car enthusiasts, restorers and the motor trade all over the world. Popular products include materials such as headlinings, vinyls and hoodings, window channels, rubber and sponge extrusions, door and boot seals, rubber matting and sound deadening products, to name just a few. What began in a double garage with “nominal stock, ultra-keen prices and lots of enthusiasm” has grown into a globally recognised specialist supplier, serving customers throughout the UK and internationally. Orders despatched from the website have been sent to sixty countries worldwide. Most of the business is mail order with the majority of customers ordering on the website, www.woolies-trim.co.uk but you can visit the company at Whitley Way, Northfields Industrial
56
Estate in Market Deeping, PE6 8AR where they offer a counter service so you can be shown samples of products before you buy them. They are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm but CLOSED between 1pm and 2pm for lunch. Today, the company is led by directors, Duncan Allen and Louise Woolstenholmes Green, the founders’ daughter, whilst Ian and Caroline still take a keen interest in the company. Louise commented “My parents started Woolies with a simple philosophy: offer quality products, fair prices and customer service which is second to none. Those principles remain at the heart of everything we do today.” As the company looks ahead to its next chapter, its mission remains unchanged: helping preserve the nation’s motoring heritage, one restoration at a time. Local History
The Loyal Lincolnshire Yeomanry
I
By Jane Gabbutt (The Aveland History Group) *
n the quarter of a century or more before Bourne’s current Town Hall building was constructed, the French Revolution had shaken Europe, replacing monarchy with radical new politics, and by the 1790s, Britain feared both ideological unrest at home and the growing military ambition of Napoleon; the possibility of invasion felt real. In response, volunteer cavalry units, known as the yeomanry, were raised across the country to reinforce local defence and support civil authority. These mounted troops were drawn from men of means who could supply their own horses. In July 1794, it was announced in the Stamford Mercury that the Loyal Lincolnshire Yeomanry had been formed and their striking new uniform was described: “Dark-blue, with Scarlet Cape and Cuff… gilt Buttons, with the Words Loyal Lincolnshire Yeomanry round the Border in a Garter, and the Crown in the Centre.” A most visual declaration of patriotism! Sir Gilbert Heathcote, 4th Baronet, played a leading role. Already an experienced yeomanry officer, he proposed raising two full troops from Bourne, Folkingham and the surrounding villages. His leadership shaped the Bourne Squadron from its earliest days, and when the corps was reorganised as the Lincolnshire Light Horse Rangers in 1803, he returned as Major, guiding it through renewed fears of

French invasion. His brothers, John and Robert commanded the Folkingham and Bourne troops, making the Heathcotes central to the county’s volunteer cavalry for more than two decades. Alongside him was Thomas Rawnsley who raised and drilled a troop at his own expense during the Napoleonic invasion scare from his home on South Street, Bourne (now known as Cavalry House). As captain, adjutant and paymaster he was significantly involved in the daily running of the corps and was presented with a silver goblet by Lady Heathcote in 1808 in recognition of his services. Both Heathcote and Rawnsley later subscribed to the building of Bourne Town Hall in 1821, and their stories have been researched by volunteers through the Town Hall Histories project. Sir Gilbert Heathcote (1773-1851), 4th baronet of Normanton Park * Jane is engaged with the Bourne Old Town Hall project, part of which has been to investigate the donors listed on the board that had pride of place and will once again adorn the renovated Old Town Hall when complete.

Award-Winning Bourne Footlights to Present
“School For Murder”
Did you know that Bourne has an award-winning drama society?
B
ourne Footlights took their One-Act-Plays, “Regina Monologues” and “Henry’s End” to the Boston One-Act Festival and came away with prizes for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ (Ashleigh Holmes), ‘The Adjudicator’s Award’ (Christine Weldrake), and ‘Best Female Actress’ (Emily Cooper). And now, Bourne Footlights’ next production is “School For Murder” by Bettine Manktelow (courtesy of Stagescripts) and will feature many of the brilliant members of the cast of “Regina Monologues” and “Henry’s End”. It will be performed at Bourne Corn Exchange on November 4th - 6th at 7.30pm. Wouldn’t we all like our moment in the spotlight seeing our book on the shelf at Waterstones, the film rights and the TV mini-series? That’s what our characters are thinking of when they read the following advert in ‘Writers’ (the magazine for authors). “So, you think you can write a best seller? Love a good murder mystery? Then this is the workshop for you! Come to the idyllic Cotswolds and
experience a full week of seminars and exercises to improve your writing. Take time to hone your craft with the help of D J Burrows (Best Detective Yarn of the Year Award winner). Advice on publication, editing and marketing. Sign up now for ‘The School for Murder - Ladies Crime Week.'” Join Amanda, Delia, Maggie and Lottie as they arrive at Brackenbank Guest House to follow their dreams of literary fame. Meet Sandra, their host, who has a mystery of her own and DJ Burrows who, keen to uphold his position as the nation’s favourite crime author, will go to great lengths! What could possibly go wrong?
Tickets at £13 are available from Ticket Source and from Bourne Bookshop (cash only).

Words from the Mayor
Councillor Paul Fellows
When you see or hear the name Bourne United Charities, what springs to mind? Do you imagine a ‘Scrooge-like’ room with lots of ledgers or rather, a spotless, computer-dominated office?
N
either of these images are the case. Bourne United Charities is the most supportive, community-contributing organisation in Bourne.
Imagine a Bourne without the Abbey Lawns and all the sporting facilities it provides: The Outdoor Pool, Bourne Town Football Ground, the Cricket and Tennis Clubs, Petanque, Bowls and, of course, the Skatepark. Imagine a Bourne without our wonderful Wellhead Gardens … and you are seeing a Bourne without BUC! As well as maintaining and managing these super facilities, the support the town gets from BUC is nothing short of phenomenal. BUC provide charitable support, including the Alms Houses, and it continually explores avenues to support the community at large. In short, BUC is there to help and, whenever it can, it will. Governed by a Board of Trustees, it manages and maintains the Red Hall. Historically of such significance to the town, this year has seen the scope of the Red Hall’s functions develop. It’s now a place to get married and celebrate it in style! It’s also developing and delivering events that are wide-ranging and inclusive, all managed with imaginative efficiency by Sallyanne and Adele. Please find out more about BUC by visiting their website or by dropping in at the Red Hall. BUC has been managed with farseeing positivity by Nick Legge, ably assisted by Vanessa. Nick has indicated that he will be retiring shortly, so I would, in these ‘Words’, like to thank him for all he has done for Bourne. As you enjoy an autumnal walk, with or without a dog, through the Wellhead, watch Bourne Town FC, or spend a moment of remembrance at the War Memorial, please give a quiet thanks to Jason and his groundworks team, and BUC.

Las Vegas Beckons for Talented Bourne Dancers Twenty-two dancers from LDC Dance in Bourne are preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime as they get ready to travel to Las Vegas this October to compete and perform on an international stage.
T
he trip follows an astonishing journey for the local dance school, which was crowned ‘Best Dance School’ at the NEA Regional Competition at The Cresset in Peterborough, before going on to win ‘National Best Dance School’ at the Indigo stage at The O2 in London earlier this year. Now, LDC dancers will be taking the next huge step together, and flying to America to represent their dance school, their families, and their local community in Las Vegas. LDC owner and principal teacher, Lauren Willis said, “We honestly cannot put into words how excited we are. Taking our dancers all the way to Las Vegas is something I never imagined we would have the opportunity to do. We are a local dance school from Bourne, so to think that our dancers will soon be performing and competing in America is just incredible. They have worked so hard to get to this point and we are unbelievably proud of every single one of them.
80
“There are lots of rehearsals and hard work happening behind the scenes as we prepare two routines to take to Vegas. We want to make the most of every second of the experience but, most importantly, we want the dancers to enjoy it, make memories together and realise just how much they are capable of.” LDC Dance was established in 2014 and has grown into a thriving dance community, with dancers of all ages training in a range of styles. Lauren added, “The support we have received from our dance families and the local community has been amazing. It really does feel like the whole LDC family is coming on this journey with us. We’re counting down the days now. Whatever happens when we get there, seeing my LDC dancers step onto a stage in Las Vegas is going to be an incredibly proud moment and one we will never forget.” OCT OBE R 2 0 2 6

Loaded Spuds OCTOBER VIBES
Simple comfort food doesn’t come in a finer form than a baked potato. Perfect as the weather starts to get a little chillier... stuff them with bacon, cheese and soured cream and dig in!
Method
1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Rinse the potatoes, then sprinkle all over with sea salt. Put the potatoes directly onto the oven shelf and bake for about 1 hour until crisp on the outside and soft inside when tested with a skewer. Serves 4
Ingredients
4 baking potatoes Sea salt for sprinkling 100g bacon lardons 80g unsalted butter, cubed 80g grated Cheddar, plus an extra 2 tbsp for topping 4 tbsp soured cream, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve Sourced from www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk

2 Meanwhile, fry the bacon lardons in a non-stick frying pan until crisp. 3 Once the potatoes are ready, turn the oven to grill, remove the potatoes from the oven and transfer to a baking tray. Slice off the tops (hold the potatoes steady using a clean tea towel), then carefully scoop the soft potato centres into a bowl. Add the butter, 80g cheese and soured cream to the bowl and mix well. Stir in the chives and lardons, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the cheesy filling back into the potato shells, then top with the extra cheese. 4 Grill the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden and bubbling hot. Serve with the extra soured cream and chives.
