he team here at Discovering Magazines are thrilled to announce plans to further extend our offering to the public by launching “Discovering Chatteris” next month. This will mean our “stable” will now have six titles, as we are already covering Bourne, March, Whittlesey, Wisbech and the Deepings.

Have we ever looked forward to heavy rain so much?

Still, the lawn mower has had a long holiday! The savings made on our tumble driers remaining dormant for weeks, however, will have been offset by newly acquired fans blasting the hours away!

The European Athletics Championships, recently held in Birmingham offered us the chance to see a local “star in the making”, with Amy Hunt winning four gold medals. Our excitement at watching the former Grantham A.C. sprinter’s successes was then matched by the BBC News at Ten featuring her former sprint coach, Ian Richards (known by many of us ‘Old Brunnians’ as “Chidsy”!)

And finally: ➡ What do you call a camel with three humps? Pregnant! ➡ I’m useless with names. It’s not my fault, it’s a condition.

There’s a name for it...

Outstanding Exam Results at Bourne Academy Students at the S.L.A.T. (South Lincs Academy Trust) Sixth Form at Bourne Academy have been celebrating their achievements, with another outstanding set of exam results with 49% of A-level and BTEC qualifications being the equivalent of grades A* to A and a 99% pass rate across all exams.

T

here is often debate amongst students and their teachers about what are the best qualifications or subjects to study at Sixth Form or College.

A record number of students sat exams in 2026 as the Sixth Form has grown year-on-year, as it attracts top achieving students from secondary schools across the region. The SLAT Sixth Form at Bourne Academy offers three different study pathways where students can study A-levels only, BTECs only, or ‘mix and match’ with a combination of both. This wide range of subjects gives them the best chance of securing university places, with 99% of students achieving the results required for their -chosen university.

The top grades for A-level subjects are once again consistently high at the Sixth Form, with 40% of all A-level results were grades A* to B. For the vocational qualifications, an outstanding 72% of BTEC grades achieved were Distinction* to Distinction (equivalent to A* or A grade at A-level) with 98% of all BTEC grades achieved were Distinction* to Merit (equivalent to A* or C grade at A-level).

Mrs Jemma Curson, C.E.O. at S.L.A.T. said, “We are immensely proud to celebrate another outstanding set of A-level and BTEC grades. It has been wonderful to see the successes of our students as their hard work and dedication has been rewarded. I would like to thank the Sixth Form team and teaching staff for all their advice, guidance and outstanding teaching that the students have received.”

Miss Katie Belcher, Headteacher at Bourne Academy said, “The destinations our students have secured is incredible, with 99% having achieved their chosen university or apprenticeship offers.

A Footpath Beloved by the People of Bourne

E

arlier this year, a possibility arose whereby the access to Bourne Woods and the Community Orchard from Beech Avenue could be closed to the public. This may well not happen, but changes are afoot with regards to the forester's bungalow and the large shed that belongs to Forestry England.

Following research, it became apparent that this much used and much valued track is not actually a Public Right of Way (PRW) and that it really should be one, qualifying as it does with all the criteria for such a designation. A group of concerned individuals started the process to put the access onto the Definitive Map for Lincolnshire; not an easy process, as our local representative of the Ramblers warned: it can take a long time, but the important factor is to prove that the footpath has been in use for at least twenty years, ‘without let or hindrance’.

Forms completed by members of the local community were submitted to the Definitive Map Officer, Public Rights of Way and Access at Lincolnshire County Council, with some of the written comments being of considerable human interest.

Anecdotes referred back to the days when The Camp still existed, (roughly where the green is on the other side of Beech Avenue); for the children who lived there in the 1950s - 60s, Bourne Woods was their playground, the entrance being the same track that many hundreds, if not thousands, use today.

Of those who added comments to their forms, many had used this entrance to Bourne Woods for far more than twenty years, and some for fifty, for running, walking, cycling, observing nature, and exercising dogs. The following is an example: “Over the decades, this route has been an integral part of our family's daily life – first with prams and young children, later for family bike rides and now for regular walks with my husband and our dog.

Throughout this time the route has been used openly and frequently by a wide range of local residents. It serves as a well-established and important access point into the woods, relied upon every day for recreation and community connection. The route is a valued part of our local area, contributing to the character and accessibility to Bourne Woods.”

The process has begun, but it may well take a long time to come to fruition, and many more hoops will have to be jumped through before the beloved path becomes a Public Right of Way. Very many thanks to all those who have taken part so far.

D

ays are shortening and there will be quite a bit of clearing to do on the vegetable patch this month as you harvest all those wonderful crops.

Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease so put them on the compost heap, if they are not diseased.

Some examples of crops for planting now: • Winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose).

• Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October.

• Spinach.

• Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves.

• Onion sets and garlic.

• “Green manures.” There are numerous varieties on the market but “Winter Mix” is a good recommendation. These green manures perform three main functions.

– They provide compost material.

– They help prevent weed growth.

– They soak up nutrients that would normally be washed away by winter rains.

If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter and early next spring the plants can be dug in before they flower. Those with clay soils will benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• If leaves are shading the fruit of your tomato plants, remove them now to help the trusses ripen.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over, cut out all the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild.

Moist weather gives the best results.

• Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.

• Lift potatoes if they are ready, usually 18-22 weeks after planting. Wait until the foliage has fully yellowed and died back. Cut the tops off and leave tubers in the soil for 10-14 days to allow skins to harden, improving storage life. Potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting.

• Lift onions, which should be stored in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place.

Lucy Goldsmith Keeping it in the Family

H

er father, Kenny Goldsmith has decided, at the age of sixty-two, to hand over his very successful and popular business to Lucy who, having qualified as a nurse for a year and trained for 4 years, is now returning to painting and decorating, her preferred profession.

Following in her father’s footsteps from August 1st will be Bourne’s Lucy Goldsmith (33) who will be returning full-time to a profession she knows very well, that of painting and decorating.

Kenny has spent almost a lifetime in painting and decorating, having started with Stringers straight from school at age fifteen and spending time as a fireman in Bourne too. Thirty years of being self-employed followed, which included a period when Lucy joined the firm, ‘K Goldsmith & Daughter’.

Around this time, 2014, whilst completing her apprenticeship, Lucy received the prestigious C.I.T.B. “Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Award” for coping so well when Kenny suffered a heart attack which required a triple heart bypass operation.

It seems such a coincidence that now the door to the business is re-opening for Lucy, as Kenny has had further health issues but, principally, has decided to become a full-time carer for his wife, Tess, who is stoically facing up to her terminal cancer diagnosis. It is only by recognising that Lucy has already proved herself to Kenny to be a committed, trustworthy and very talented worker that he can feel comfortable to hand over the reins to her.

The glowing reputation which Kenny has worked so hard over the years to create will be something that Lucy will be aiming to maintain in the years to come.

Lucy lives with her partner, Nicky Alwyn, and is stepmother to his three children.

Nicky is currently a fireman, but the long-term plan is for Lucy, ably assisted

by Kenny (in a consultancy role), to train Nicky up to be able to join the firm.

Behind the Scaffolding at

Bourne’s Old Town Hall An update from Amanda Revell at the Trustees of the Len Pick Trust Stepping into the Old Town Hall for a recent ‘hard hat tour’ (kindly hosted by the project’s builders, Probus Construction) was a poignant moment for the Trustees of the Len Pick Trust. Behind the scaffolding and hard hats lies a project filled with vision and pride for our community, and we are immensely grateful to the Probus team for giving us such a fascinating insight into their progress.

As many residents know, the Len Pick Trust was proud to award funding toward the Town Hall’s major restoration, including the ambitious plan to rebuild its historic clocktower and restore the original two-hundred-year-old Georgian clock. Seeing the transformation first hand was a powerful reminder of what local support can achieve, bringing life, arts, and heritage back into the very heart of Bourne.

Preserving a Legacy, Supporting Our Community Since our establishment, following the generous bequest of local landowner Len Pick in 2004, the Trust has worked quietly to enrich life across Bourne, Dyke, Cawthorpe, and Twenty. Over the years, we have funded vital equipment for local schools, supported grassroots projects like Don’t Lose Hope, helped keep the Bourne Outdoor Pool thriving, and funded lifesaving defibrillators across the town.

For me it’s a little ironic that on the hottest day of the year, August 13th, I should be writing my ‘Words’ for September!

I

t does, however, allow me to reflect on the super-hot summer we’ve had in Bourne and to focus on two amazing organisations that will have done so much to make the holidays fun for the youngsters, as well as the not so young.

When Manager, Graham Parrot suggested to the Elsea Park Trust that what was really needed to make a fantastic summer experience was a huge pile of sand, buckets and spades, deck chairs, entertainment and, most importantly, affordable ice creams, he wasn’t met with a huge “Whoopie, let’s do it!” But the Trust went ahead and did it and what a success it turned out to be!

The ‘Urban Beach 26’, open to all, featured attractions as varied as magicians, singers, circus workshops, football shootouts, ‘bouncy stuff’ and, of course, Punch and Judy! A big thank you on behalf of the community to the Trust, for the imagination to make it happen.

It is also appropriate to add thanks to the Trust for all it does on a yearly basis for the residents, making it as good as it is. Imagine what Elsea Park would be like without the excellent management it gets, drawing plaudits from SKDC. My second ‘shoutout’ is for all the lifeguards, volunteers and management of Bourne’s Outdoor Swimming Pool. Quite splendidly unique to Bourne and, returning to my last statement, “Where would we be without it?” Open for what seems to be ‘all the time’ in the summer, the pool offers events, classes and opportunities for swimmers of all levels, with a lot of fun mixed in. One event that was particularly successful this summer was the Solar Eclipse Swim. Swimming in the dark, of course, has the advantage of no one being able to see your ‘cosi’!

Surely, there can be no one living here, or with associations with Bourne, who doesn’t know about the pool or more importantly, has visited it! Finally, a massive thank you to Mandy Delaine-Smith for literally years of selfless service to our brilliant town.

Why pricing correctly from ‘day one’ could save you thousands and get you moving faster

Ofgem: This is where a scammer claims to be from the energy regulator Ofgem. They may ask you to change your bank details or provide personal information to get funding or cheap energy. Ofgem will never ask you for personal information, sell you energy, or show up at your house.

Home improvements: Alarm bells should sound if you are contacted by a company telling you that your home is unsafe. Typical scams could include: • They can install energy efficiency improvements to save money on your bills.

• You have spray foam insulation that needs to be removed.

Meter reading scams: Scammers may impersonate your provider or another company to trick you into agreeing to an installation, sometimes requesting an upfront fee or personal details. However, smart meters are free to install. Your energy supplier should organise the installation and it should only be carried out by a qualified professional.

Brenda Bratherton: Charity Worker and Poet

started writing poetry while my husband and I were carrying out our aid work in Egypt. We ran our own charity, funding education and healthcare for children. Most days we would visit remote villages, and in one particular village, Beshlaw, we helped to build a small school where eighty-seven children attended daily. All the children came from poor families. As you can imagine, village life wasn’t easy, having to cut sugar cane with a machete aged just four and five-years-old years old. It was not just hard, but very dangerous but it was the only way families could earn a living.

These were the children and families we supported and enabled them to gain access to education and medical care.

Once involved with the school, our work increased and seeing most of the mud brick houses were the “family homes”, we were soon joined by mums, dads, grandparents, aunties, uncles, nieces and nephews who all needed support in one way and another. This village was very remote, with most of the adults unable to read or write.

Most days we would witness some very upsetting scenes so, in order to try and clear my mind, I started writing poetry.

This was way back in 2011 and has continued to the present day.

Next month, we can start to appreciate some of Brenda’s work.

Apple, Pear & Walnut Crumble

Ingredients...

500g apple, peeled, cored and cut into large chunks 500g pear, peeled, cored and cut into large chunks Finely grated zest of 1 lemon, juice of 1/2 lemon 2 tbsp light muscovado sugar

For the cru mble...

100g pack of walnuts

175g granary or wholemeal flour (or plain white) 85g butter, diced 85g caster or light muscovado sugar

Method

1 Heat oven to 190˚C/Fan 170˚C/Gas 5. Put the chopped apples, lemon zest and sugar in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice and cook for 3-4 mins. Tip in the pears and cook 2-3 mins more, until the fruits are just beginning to soften. Spoon the fruits and juices into a 1.7 litre pudding dish and flatten slightly.

2 For the crumble, finely chop half the walnuts in a food processor until reduced to the consistency of ground almonds. Add the flour, butter and sugar and continue to blitz to a coarse or fine crumble mix, whichever you prefer.

3 Roughly break the remaining walnuts with your fingers and stir into the crumble.

Scatter the crumble mix on top of the fruits and bake for 20-25 mins until golden brown.

Serve warm with cream or custard.

The pleasure I get from my garden is yet untold...

It is a love affair of which I seldom speak.

A collection of my ‘children’ I have planted up to tend To watch them grow until they reach their peak.

Like a mother, I observe progress of their growth And nurture them with whatever they may need.

My reward is when things begin to happen; An explosion of sheer magic from a seed!

I am not ashamed to say that we communicate As I tend them, I might whisper loving words, Reassuring them that they are in good hands In the midst of sun and rain and bees and birds.

Such tranquillity oozes from my garden And trickles over me like melting honey...

I sway gently on my garden swing and muse As my plants consume the air so warm and sunny.

I must make the most of summer’s generosity...

Too soon the season will be past and gone.

The winter winds will chill as I remember...

um, as an alcoholic spirit drink, has been around for many years, with history showing the records dating from at least the 17th century. The preferences and requirements of rums vary from person to person.

Some rum lovers may enjoy a light or golden-coloured rum, whist others could choose a dark-coloured rum, for example. hilst it is normal for everyone to feel sad or upset from time to time, when these feelings are overwhelming, persistent, or are affecting your ability to function on a daily basis, you could be suffering from depression. It may be that you suffer from feelings of helplessness, guilt or worthlessness; perhaps you have difficulty making decisions, being overwhelmed or concentrating on anything; maybe you feel tired and pessimistic all the time.

Feeling hopeless and helpless?

Procrastination has often been attributed to poor time management, but chronic procrastination is due to poor self-regulation. The prospect of enduring a tax return, exam, the housework, or odd jobs just doesn’t have the same immediate appeal as shopping, indulging in an addiction, social media, being slumped in a chair, or caffeine.

In the depressed brain, the primitive part of the mind is much more active, and this part of the brain is normally very negative. This makes us feel hopeless and unable to see a way out and it can be a lonely and unforgiving, negative place to be. The depressed brain is starved of positive chemicals and restricts your ability to think clearly and resourcefully. Depression takes away our confidence and our ability to remain rational and positive about ourselves and our situations. In this state of mind, we lose the ability to think clearly and intellectually.

When we feel depressed, we want to put our life on pause and stop interacting with the rest of the world. We are much more tired and lacking in healthy energy. We just want to stay curled up in our duvets and shut ourselves away. If you have been depressed, you may have noticed that you can ruminate or worry a lot during those periods.

This type of worrying is typified by taking an “all or nothing” thinking style. This is because when we are stressed and emotionally aroused beyond a certain point the mind takes the “fight or flight” approach and looks at the worst, most extreme, scenario. We don’t look at our situation from a rational perspective, taking in all the possibilities like we might do when we are more relaxed.

Wood Grange Team Completes Charity Challenge for Alzheimer’s Society

S

taff and family members from Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne successfully completed an incredible twenty-six-mile charity walk around Rutland Water on Saturday August 15th, raising an amazing £1,060 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The walk tested everyone both physically and mentally, with plenty of aches and pains, as well as highs and lows throughout the day. Although each person had their own reasons for taking part, the team supported and encouraged one another from start to finish. The experience brought everyone closer together and created a real sense of achievement when they finally crossed the finish line.

General Manager, Katya Petrova supported the team from start to finish, meeting the walkers at the start and bringing snacks to help them refuel. Katya said, “I am

incredibly proud of everyone who took part. It was wonderful to see our staff and families come together for a cause that means so much to us.”

Anya Simmonds, Activities Coordinator at Wood Grange, said, “We are so incredibly proud of everyone who completed

the challenge. Reaching the finish was an amazing feeling, and knowing we have raised £1,060 for the Alzheimer’s Society makes every ache and pain completely worthwhile.”

Wood Grange would like to thank everyone who donated, shared the fundraiser and supported the team throughout the challenge.

The Women’s Wellbeing Club – A Roaring Success When the idea of creating a Women’s Wellbeing Club first came to mind, I hoped it would resonate with women looking for a safe, supportive space to pause, reflect and connect.

The response has exceeded all expectations.

F

ollowing an overwhelming number of enquiries, our first two sessions in July and August sold out within days of being advertised. Due to popular demand, an additional November session has been added, with a December date already being planned.

The Women’s Wellbeing Club is built on a simple belief: women deserve time for themselves.

Taking care of your own wellbeing is not selfish; it is essential. When we understand ourselves better, we are better able to care for the people who matter most to us.

Our first gathering welcomed fifteen wonderful women to the cosy surroundings of The Woodhouse Arms in Corby Glen, where we enjoyed refreshments, delicious cake and, most importantly, meaningful conversation. Together we explored one of the emotions many women experience every day – guilt. Through discussion, practical activities and shared experiences, we laughed, reflected, learnt from one another and realised that none of us is alone in how we feel.

Each 90-minute session offers a welcoming, judgement-free environment where women can explore the psychology behind everyday thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Through light-hearted activities, practical strategies and open discussion, members gain greater selfawareness, confidence and tools they can use long after the session ends. There is no pressure to share, simply an invitation to learn, reflect and grow alongside other supportive women.

In August, our focus turned to boundaries. We explored why healthy boundaries matter, why they can be so difficult to maintain, how they protect our wellbeing and when flexibility is both helpful and necessary.

he new school shoes are probably already scuffed; the lunchboxes are back in circulation and there may still be a stray name label stuck to the kitchen table. After the blur of the summer holidays, September can feel like a fresh start.

It is also the time when many of us start making lists again. School forms, clubs, appointments, uniform top-ups, birthday parties, it all creeps back in quickly.

But before the diary fills up completely, it is worth adding one important job to the list: sorting your will and the “life admin” that sits around it.

I know, it is not exactly the sort of thing any of us want to think about between school runs and swimming lessons. But making a will is one of those grown-up jobs that gives you a surprising amount of peace of mind once it is done. For parents, it is not just about

money or possessions; it’s about making things easier, clearer and kinder for the people you love, if life takes an unexpected turn.

One of the biggest reasons is guardianship. If your children are still young, your will lets you say who you would want to look after them if you could not. It is a horrible thought, of course, but it is also an incredibly loving one. You are making your wishes clear so that the people around you are not left guessing at the worst possible time.

A will also helps set out who should deal with your estate and how you would like things to be shared.

That can be especially important if you have moved house, had another child, got married, separated, started a business or simply have not looked at your will for years. What made sense then may not be right for your family now.

It is worth thinking about Lasting Powers of Attorney too. These let you choose who could make decisions for you if you were ever too unwell or injured to make them yourself. Many of us assume our partner or family could just step in, but it is not always that simple. Putting the paperwork in place now can save a lot of stress later.

None of this must be scary or complicated. Think of it as another way of looking after your family, a bit like packing the PE kit, booking the dentist, or making sure there is bread in the freezer for emergency toast. So, while September still has that fresh-start feeling, book the appointment, ask the questions and tick it off now - you will be so glad you did!

A common theme is the lack of understanding and knowledge of business financial data. Accounts can be scary and confusing, often not knowing where to be begin.

Gunsmiths and Grief

The Story of a Scottlethorpe Farmer

H

enry Hand’s life began in 1787 in the Leicestershire village of Redmile, the son of John and Ann Hand. By the 1810s, Henry had established himself at Scottlethorpe, near Edenham and soon his annual ram shows were a fixture of the local agricultural calendar. He married Elizabeth Manton of Grantham in 1815, and together they built a thriving, bustling household.

But behind the busy life uncovered by our “Town Hall Histories Project”, lay a family story marked by deep loss. Henry and Elizabeth had twelve children; however, tragedy struck early. Their eldest daughter, Elizabeth, died in 1829 at just twelve years old after a short illness; two years later, eleven year old Harriet followed in the same heartbreaking way. The newspaper notices are stark and brief, but the grief they imply is immense.

Elizabeth herself died young in 1841, aged only forty-seven, leaving the family as “a disconsolate husband and twelve children to deplore their loss.”

And yet the Hand children did not simply endure, they rose. Their mother’s family, the Mantons, were no ordinary relations. Elizabeth’s uncles, John and Joseph Manton, were among the most celebrated

gunsmiths of the flintlock age, employing apprentices who would go on to found Purdey, Boss, Greener and other great gun making houses. Through this remarkable network, the Hand daughters found opportunities far beyond rural Lincolnshire.

By the 1850s, Anne, Mary Hannah and Frances Hand were running a refined girls’ school from Harley Street, London, one of the most prestigious addresses in the country. Their sister Georgiana later joined them, and for decades the four women lived and worked together, educating the daughters of the capital’s professional classes. It was a striking transformation: the children of a Scottlethorpe farmer becoming London educators with Manton cousins among their pupils.

Henry died in 1852, remembered as a gentleman. His legacy, though, lived on most vividly in the resilience and ambition of the daughters who continued the Hand family story through the nineteenth century.

Aveland Stories & Crafts Heritage Inspiring Creativity

Get Creative and Make New Friends!

T

he Aveland History Group are launching a full autumn programme for our new initiative that we are calling “Aveland Stories & Crafts”. Beginning with an inspirational story or curiosity from the past, our programme of visits, workshops and talks explores Aveland’s heritage, combining creativity with imagination for a series of unique experiences, as individual as you are!

We are building on the great workshops from 2025 as part of “Worth 200”, where participants commented on the supportive feeling of the workshops and the pleasure of trying something new. Friendships were forged by people meeting for the first time, in some cases, new residents to the town; others were keen to follow up on something that they may have done with a family member years ago and now had an opportunity to rekindle that flame of creativity.

The spring programme is already well on in the planning stage, and we hope next summer to be able to add in workshops for children, as the

programme allows. Alison Carr of The Aveland History Group says, “We hope that this will be a rolling programme that expands across the locality, drawing people of every age into an appreciation of the materials and skills familiar to our ancestors, showing that these crafts do not have to die out but can genuinely be reinvigorated by new ideas and fresh eyes upon them.”

The Aveland History Group are proud to be a community focussed group, sharing our local history in creative ways and delving into aspects of our heritage that may not have been foremost in other history societies.
