Discovering Bourne issue 179, July 2026

Page 1

Welcome to your July issue...

As we bowl headlong into the second half of the year, we are now in the month of school sports days and “proms”, signifying a conclusion to another school year and the start of that longed-for summer holiday. It is so pleasing to see how many people are now realising that there are opportunities to put on events and attractions in our towns and villages to keep everyone involved and have “fun in the sun”. An excellent case in point is how the Elsea Park Community Trust in Bourne will be hosting a threeweek long “Urban Beach” next month with free activities galore.

I was amused to discover that July 7th is “World Chocolate Day”, celebrating the joy of that heavenly product, and then, eight days later, we have “National Give Something Away Day” which is designed to promote generosity and sharing - yes, but we’ll have already eaten it all on July 7th!

A most eventful week in The Lake District for our family recently as one of us managed to fall and get hauled off The Old Man of Coniston by stretcher, courtesy of the awesome Coniston Mountain Rescue Team. It was an opportunity for us all to seriously appreciate just how professional and well-drilled these rescue teams can be, and all relying on voluntary contributions for their existence. (I told them I’d give them a shout-out! www.conistonmrt.org – Ed.)

And so, here we are enjoying/enduring the extravaganza that is the FIFA World Cup. For many, the sweepstakes have given us the chance to try and discover just what, and where in the world are places like Curacao and Uzbekistan! And finally:

➡ Never buy trousers in the South of France – they’re either Toulouse or Toulon

➡ There’s to be a “Dress up as a Type of Bread Day” at school next week – roll on Monday! Enjoy the read … and Come on Ingerland!

Bourne Outdoor Pool

Bourne’s Hidden Gem is situated at the southern end of the tranquil and picturesque Abbey Lawn close to the centre of the historic market town of Bourne, Lincolnshire.

The 50-yard, near Olympic-size heated pool is one of the largest surviving outdoor pools in the country and has been operated and maintained by volunteers since 1990, with qualified lifeguards on duty during opening times. All other work is undertaken by the Trustees and a dedicated group of volunteers.

Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool offers a traditional family day out where you can enjoy a picnic in the grounds whilst enjoying a swim in the main pool or the little ones can splash around in our toddler pool and splash fountain. There is also a café on site.

This pool dates back to 1138 when it began life as an historic monks’ fishpond, being converted to a swimming pool by keen local swimmers after the 1914-1918 Great War. In 1932, Bourne United Charities obtained the Monks Garden and Abbey Lawns and began to modernise the pool. Over the years, changing rooms were added, as well as a heating system and SKDC took over the running until 1989, when they decided to close the pool. Following uproar from the town, including a protest march and petition, a Preservation Trust was set up in 1990 to preserve the pool for years to come.

Over the subsequent years, many improvements and changes have been made, including new boilers, accessible changing rooms, refurbishment of the changing rooms and, more recently, new pool edging and café facilities.

2026 is our thirty-seventh year as a charity. The Trustees and volunteers continue to operate and maintain this unique facility for the people of Bourne and beyond. While striving to maintain the traditional ambience of the pool, an ongoing programme of improvements will continue as funds permit to enable the pool to meet all Health & Safety and Food & Hygiene regulations.

Why I Created a Women’s Wellbeing Club

What if there were a space that combined meaningful conversations about wellbeing with the warmth and informality of meeting with friends?

Aplace where women could talk openly about the everyday psychological experiences we all share without pressure, judgement or expectation.

Drawing on my background in education and my recent master’s degree in psychology specialising in Mental Health and Wellbeing, I wanted to create a welcoming environment where women could better understand their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Not to diagnose or treat, but to explore, reflect and learn.

I am passionate about prevention rather than cure. I believe that understanding ourselves and prioritising our own wellbeing allows us to care more effectively for the people we love and support.

Hosted at The Woodhouse Arms in Corby Glen, each session offers coffee, cake and other treats purchased at the venue, plus conversation in a relaxed and welcoming setting. We’ll begin with informal introductions and an overview of the session before exploring a wellbeing theme together.

Our first session focuses on guilt, a powerful and often misunderstood emotion. Together, we’ll explore why we experience guilt, how it affects us emotionally and physically, and how recognising guilt can help us better understand our values. Most importantly, we’ll consider how to let go of guilt when it no longer serves us.

And so, the Women’s Wellbeing Club was born.

I’d love to invite you to join me, along with other like-minded women, for our monthly wellbeing mornings.

Smoke Freedom?

Many people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking. Well, hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good by using your imagination to create a non-smoking future which is positive, empowering and allows you to take control, not only of your smoking habits but of your life.

Benefits of stopping smoking are amazing:

◆ Have a decreased chance of having a heart attack after just twenty-four hours of stopping.

◆ No longer be taking in 4,500 cell-destroying chemicals.

◆ You will learn to control cravings.

◆ Have more energy.

◆ Learn to control stress.

◆ Your skin will improve its appearance.

◆ You will feel fitter and healthier.

◆ Reduce the risk of developing illness.

◆ No longer smell of tobacco.

◆ You will enjoy the taste of food more.

◆ Improve your breathing and fitness levels.

◆ Improve your immune system.

◆ You will feel happier, more confident and more in control.

◆ Improve fertility levels.

◆ Save money and spend money on things which

can improve your quality of life rather than undermine it.

◆ You will no longer smell of smoke.

◆ You will no longer endanger those around you.

◆ You will feel more socially acceptable, no longer burdened by a nasty habit.

“Believe you can and you’re almost there”

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around 45 minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation.

The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works, regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual, so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.

“You are greater than your addiction, so STOP EASILY TODAY!”

Taking on a completely new challenge in life after two decades working in the construction and manufacturing sectors, a Bourne man has recently established a Solution Focused Hypnotherapy practice.

Father to Leo (Year 9) and Darcy (Year 6), and married to Finula, James Sharpe is eager to work with people struggling to come to terms with a range of often debilitating conditions, including anxiety, depression, grief, fears and phobias, sports performance and lack of confidence. He is genuinely interested in this area of our lives and enjoys seeing the progress clients can make with this process.

After completing a Psychology degree with the Open University, James (41) decided to train as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist with the Clifton Practice, generally regarded as the gold standard for hypnotherapy training in this country.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works by creating a relaxed and positive frame of mind, which leads to us thinking more rationally, and, through hypnosis, to overcome the things which are blocking our way forward in life.

The many positive reviews already praising James include:

● “His approach is calm, supportive and incredibly professional.”

● “He is fantastic at what he does and truly cares about helping people feel their best.”

● “I have seen a significant increase in my motivation, and I am better able to manage negative thoughts and situations.”

If you’re feeling stuck, anxious, low or have an issue that you would like to work through, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a positive way to break the cycles that are holding you back.

Clinic Care for all your Foot Health Needs

Foot Bliss Bourne is a predominantly clinic-based foot care service, although home visits are available within Bourne and the surrounding villages.

Nicola London understands the pressure we put on our feet and the damage that everyday wear and tear can have on our overall foot health, from her long experience as a runner. Foot care is for everyone, young and old. It is important to maintain good foot health at an early age to avoid complications later in life.

Good foot health involves you looking out for: any changes to your feet, both physical changes and pain; cracked, dry skin; sore ingrown toenails; and thickened and discoloured nails, which could indicate a fungal condition. Diabetics should take extra care, as any changes could be an early indication that there is an underlying issue.

From her welcoming, relaxing clinic, based in Burchnell Gardens in Bourne, Nicola’s treatments include fungal nails, thickened nails, verrucae, ingrown toenails, general foot health and nail trimming, diabetic foot health assessments, neuropathy testing, corn removal, and callus reduction.

All Nicola asks is that “You bring only yourself and your medical history to the clinic; I do the rest while you sit back and relax and enjoy a complimentary foot massage at the end of your treatment. Many clients comment that they leave feeling they are walking on air!” There is currently capacity for new clients and Nicola is happy to discuss any foot health concerns that you may have.

Thickened toe nail reduction

Eurovision Fever Strikes Local Care Home

On May 29th, staff and residents at The Cedars Care Home in Bourne dusted off their dancing shoes and donned their sparkling frocks to join Alison Jay performing the most popular songs form Eurovision over the last seventy years.

Knowing how much their residents had enjoyed watching the contest in Vienna on May 16th and then reminiscing and singing all the songs from bygone years, the activities team at The Cedars came up with the genius idea of throwing a Eurovision Disco Party. The team invited all the residents, their families and friends and the afternoon went down a storm.

Residents joined in and sang all the songs, danced and clapped along as Alison Jay performed such songs as “Puppet on a String” and “Waterloo”. The hospitality team at the home also put on a show of sweet and savoury treats and refreshments. Residents and staff dressed up and took to the mic.

Senior General Manager, Rebecca Aldred, stated, “Music has a magical way of unlocking memories and tap into life histories; it was wonderful to see the power of song and dance bring so much joy to the room”.

Interior Design from a Widely Travelled Expert

This Rutland-based, residential interior design practice was founded by Hannah Kerrison Close and can provide anything from a “full service” interior design for a property, down to small-scale projects, bespoke packages and consultations. The full details of the various “packages” on offer can be found on her very impressive website, www.kerrisonclose.com.

Hannah’s fascinating life journey has taken her property sales at Savills, to Sothebys in Paris initially, onto more creative pursuits, graduating with a Diploma from the prestigious KLC School of Design in London. Marriage and a move to New York provided many opportunities for Hannah to hone her skills, working for leading interior design

firms including Charlotte Moss, Victoria Hagan, David Linley and Foley & Cox.

Now working for herself since 2011, Hannah’s “huge adventure”, after travelling extensively around the United States, next involved the arrival of the first of their two sons, and a return to London. Seeking sanctuary from the capital, and a longing to reestablish herself as an interior designer, Kerrison Close Ltd was formed, following a family move to a dilapidated farmhouse in Billesdon, Rutland.

That home has now been transformed and provides an opportunity for potential clients to visit and see what is possible, once a skilled and vastly experienced interior designer gets to work. Hannah uses her home as a work base but is happy to travel within a fifty-mile radius.

Miss Judith Turner Sills: A Lady of Learning and Legacy

In Georgian times, finishing schools for young ladies were not for the wealthiest families; they had private governesses. The education itself was scant; Charles Dickens described them in 1834 as places where girls gained “a smattering of everything, and a knowledge of nothing.”

It is at the head of one such curious institution that we find one of our donors to Bourne Town Hall, Miss Sills. Our volunteers have been piecing together the stories of the subscribers to the building in 1820, following trails through newspapers, misspelled census entries, and scattered parish records. The story of Judith Sills (sometimes spelled Sells) emerged from their work, revealing a schoolmistress who lived with both quiet determination and a shrewd understanding of her place in the world.

Young Ladies,” promising attention to “morals, health, and learning” for twenty guineas a year, with approved masters attending.

When Judith opened her school for young ladies in 1814 at Billingborough Hall, she was only twenty five yet already carried the authority of someone shaped by lineage and expectation. Born in 1789 at Knipton Lodge on the Belvoir Estate, she was the daughter of Henry Sills and Mary Turner—Mary being the only child of George Turner, Chaplain to the Duke of Rutland. Judith grew up in a household where duty, propriety, and education were woven into daily life.

Her first advertisement announced the school to be “for the reception of

By 1819, she had moved the school to Hanthorpe House where she stayed until 1828, then moving to Grantham and ultimately retirement. Her subscription to Bourne Town Hall in 1821 is considered to be a strategic gesture to promote her business and standing.

There were quiet acts of devotion too: in 1868 she paid for a stained glass window in Knipton church in memory of her family. Recorded for perpetuity in her published diary, a former pupil, Eliza James of Kettering, described Miss Sills as a “highly valued friend”.

Judith lived to eighty-five, a long life pieced together from scattered records, but one that clearly left affection in its wake.

*Jane Gabbutt is engaged with the Bourne Old Town Hall Project, part of which has been to investigate the donors listed on the board that had pride of place and will once again adorn the renovated Old Town Hall when complete.

Air Conditioning – For All Year-Round Comfort

With increasing hot spells and soaring temperatures recently, Government experts have warned that air conditioning (AC) will soon be "unavoidable" to protect many Britons from unbearable summer heat. They have called for maximum temperature regulations at work, cooling in hospitals and care homes by 2035 and in schools by 2050, with suggestions that the school year should be modified to better suit exam conditions. But once seen as a luxury and unaffordable, AC is becoming much more mainstream as homeowners reap its many benefits, which include:

• Regulated temperature and comfort – An AC system provides a consistent and comfortable indoor environment. Whether it’s sweltering summer heat or chilly winter days, your home remains at an optimal temperature.

• Humidity control – AC also regulates humidity levels. High humidity can lead to discomfort, mould growth, and damage to furniture. By dehumidifying the air, AC units create a healthier living space.

• Improved air quality – Modern AC systems come equipped with high-density filters, extracting dust particles, allergens, and even viruses from the air.

• Enhanced concentration and mental wellbeing – Stifling heat can affect your concentration and productivity so AC can promote mental wellbeing.

• Fewer insects and parasites – Cooler indoor temperatures discourage pests.

• Energy efficiency – While AC units consume electricity, their efficiency has improved significantly. Choose an energy-efficient system to keep costs low.

• Year-round comfort – Modern AC systems offer both cooling and heating functions, whatever the season. For assistance with installing air conditioning in your home or office, Dow’s Air Conditioning Services, a trusted member of Safe Local Trades, can guide you through the process and ensure you find the best solution for your cooling needs.

In the meantime, here are our Top Tips to stop tempers, as well as temperatures, rising in your home:

• Stop the sun from entering a room by closing curtains and blinds during the day.

• Opening the windows later in the evening, when the air is cooler, will help to cool your home.

• Turn off any electrical items, such as light and monitors, that aren’t being used. This will not only reduce the heat in the room but save on electricity.

• Try some “DIY air con” – fill up a cup with ice or crushed ice and breathe onto it. As the air from your breath is cooled by the ice, it will be directed back onto your face, OR place a large bowl of ice in front of a regular fan to mimic the effect of air conditioning.

Regular hoeing and watering are key this month. A regular hoeing regime keeps your soil open, weed-free, and allows water to penetrate easily.

Consistent watering is critical especially during dry spells. Water deeply, rather than ‘little and often’, preferably in the early morning or late evening, as evaporation is reduced and this helps plants absorb moisture properly.

If the weather is wet and warm it provides the ideal conditions for the fungal spores of blight to reproduce and it can wreak havoc with your crops if not identified and dealt with immediately. Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year as they may be harbouring disease. If you do find blight (look out for black blotches on foliage) and if spotted early, cut down the top growth immediately to protect the tubers or fruit. Do not compost the leaves, preferably burn them.

It is time to lift garlic, onions, and shallots. Loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun and this should help prolong their storage life.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting there are still a few crops that can be planted:

• Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

• Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots – a good time to sow carrots to avoid the carrot fly.

• Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes.

A few jobs for this month include:

• Strawberries will finish fruiting so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.

• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed.

• Cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow.

• A major cause of poor crops with potatoes is poor nutrition. They are a very greedy plant, and a boost now will pay a dividend in tubers. A feed balanced as for tomatoes is ideal.

• Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep the pigeons off.

• Inspect cabbage leaves for eggs or caterpillars and squash them or spray.

• Liquid feed crops weekly to maintain productivity, especially for tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, and sweetcorn.

Just think... all that soil preparation and planting in the colder and wetter months and now a vegetable patch or allotment that is brimming with wonderful fruit and vegetables.

Enjoy!

Some "Irresistible" Favourites T

here are some wine productions that can be classed as irresistible.

For this quest, I searched for a range of wines and found a most acceptable list, that were indeed, labelled “Irresistible”. Various types of wines satisfy numerous people, be it a dry white, off-dry production, sweeter delectation or perhaps something sparkling.

EXPLORERS SAUVIGNON BLANC (12% vol), from Marlborough, New Zealand, I found to be dominated, exceptionally well, with the fruity flavours of gooseberries. This dry wine is extremely popular, satisfying many white wine lovers, constantly.

VIOGNIER ST GABRIEL PAYS

D’OC (13% vol) hails from France. This dry, fully flavoured wine production has the pale gold colours and excellent bouquet enticing to the mouth’s pleasures. Floral and ripe stone fruits are most evident.

BACCHUS (12% vol), from Kent, England, is a further, very popular dry white wine. I rated this production highly, having overtones of elderflowers and gooseberries. Fresh, and again with an aromatic pleasure for the nasal senses, this wine has countless devotees.

SOLO (12.5% vol). This dry Garnacha pink pleaser comes from Spain. The pale pink colour adds ‘interest’ to many dining tables. Old bush vines provide the red fruits for this delectation.

EIGHT ACRES (11.5% vol), from Kent, England, is highly rated by many dry, sparkling rosé, wine lovers. Ripe, juicy red fruits are very noticeable, for the mouthfeel and the palate’s delight. Again, this elegant wine adds delicate colour to a lot of dining occasions.

PROSECCO (10.5% vol) is hugely popular around the world. Both the sparkling white and sparkling rosy productions are regularly a feature at celebrations, parties and events. Italy is one of the countries, renowned globally, for wine productions of highquality and their Prosecco wines are always in demand.

All these wines can be very much enjoyed on their own, as well as accompanying numerous foods, such as white meats, fish, seafoods, salads and more, admirably.

I located these wines at a Coop store, all in their “IRRESISTIBLE” range. I found the Co-op range of wines, including a good number of award-winners, to be excellent. Knowledgeable advice is always available in stores, if required. Take time and pleasure, to find your favourites. www.coop.co.uk

Three Weeks of Summer Magic at Elsea Park Urban Beach ’26

This August, Elsea Park will be transformed into a vibrant coastal escape as the Trust unveils Urban Beach ’26, a unique three week celebration, bringing the spirit of the seaside right into the heart of our community.

From August 4th to the 24th, residents can enjoy a spectacular 15m x 9m inland beach on Cooke’s Field, directly opposite the Community Centre. Complete with soft golden sand, deckchairs, and a relaxed holiday atmosphere, it promises to be a standout attraction for all ages.

But the beach is just the beginning. Preparations are well underway, and a full programme of entertainment has been arranged to keep families, children, and visitors engaged throughout the three weeks. With activities scheduled five times a week, Urban Beach ’26 will offer something for everyone — from circus workshops and live music to the much loved Punch and Judy show.

Local housing developers have shown fantastic support for the initiative, helping bring individual entertainment days to life. Bellway Homes and Barratt David Wilson Homes have each sponsored events, reinforcing the strong partnership between the Trust and the organisations shaping our growing community.

Simon Francis, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said, “We are delighted to help sponsor Urban Beach 2026 and hope all who attend the event have a fantastic time. We are building nearby at Barratt Homes at Bourne, where a variety of homes are available with schemes and offers to suit all types of buyers.”

Urban Beach ’26 aims to create a welcoming space where neighbours can relax, connect, and enjoy the best of summer. As always, we’re hoping for plenty of sunshine to make the most of this ambitious project. But rain or shine, the Trust is committed to delivering a memorable August experience that brings people together and celebrates the spirit of Elsea Park.

Urban Beach ’26 is free to attend, open to all, and set to be a highlight of the summer calendar. Pack your sunglasses, bring your friends and a picnic, and join us for three unforgettable weeks on our very own community beach.

“Lego Mania” raises over £1,300 for Dementia Support South Lincs

Local Lego enthusiasts, families and supporters came together on June 7th for the first-ever “Lego Mania”, a community event organised to raise awareness of dementia, and support the work of Dementia Support South Lincs.

Held close to Dementia Action Week, the event shone a spotlight on the charity's Square Hole Club, an earlyonset dementia group that meets twice a month and provides social opportunities, support and friendship for people living with dementia.

Visitors enjoyed a packed programme of activities, including an exhibition of impressive Lego builds created by members of the local Lego community and supporters of the charity. There was also a dedicated building room featuring a variety of Lego challenges, giving participants the chance to win prizes. Additional attractions included an extensive raffle, a "Guess the Bricks" competition, a lucky dip and a silent auction, all helping to raise valuable funds for the charity.

Special thanks go to InterGen for sponsoring the event, Pilgrim Foodservice for donating refreshments, and Greencore for providing a substantial number of prizes. Further thanks are extended to Tesco, Sainsbury's, North Shoes, Café 35, Rob Fitness, The Sweet Stop, Hoppers, Harrison & Dunn, Bourne Book Shop, The Butterfield Centre and, of course, the charity's dedicated members and volunteers.

The “Power of the Press”!

The following message from Louise Saunders (Dementia Support South Lincs) reached us after the event:

“Lego Mania” raised an impressive £1,335.97, with all proceeds helping to support the ongoing running costs of the Square Hole Club and ensuring the charity can continue providing vital support to people living with early-onset dementia and their families.

For more information about Dementia Support South Lincs and the Square Hole Club, please contact the charity directly, by email info@dementiasupportsouthlincs. co.uk or phone 01778 426756.

“We were really pleased with how the day went and wanted to thank you again. Many of the people who attended told us they had heard about it through the (Discovering Bourne) magazine.

One story in particular stood out. An autistic boy who attended had cut the advert out of the magazine and stuck it on the fridge. He kept telling his mum, "We're going to this”. His mum shared that it can be very difficult to get him to attend or to be interested in activities, but he has a great love for Lego, so it meant a great deal to hear how excited he was. It really highlighted how important community magazines like yours are in helping people discover local events and opportunities”.

LDC in “Defying Oz”

“Breathtaking and

Stunning” Dance Showcase

Over the weekend of May 23rd and 24th, local dance school LDC Dance took to the stage at The Cresset Theatre in Peterborough with their biggest showcase to date, “Defying Oz”. Featuring one hundred and seventy dancers aged from three to eighteen, the dance showcase combines the stories of “Wicked” and “The Wizard of Oz” through Street, Commercial, Jazz, Lyrical and many more dance styles.

The show took audiences on an unforgettable journey from the sassy halls of Shiz University, along the funky Yellow Brick Road and into the glittering Emerald City, showcasing the incredible talent, dedication and hard work of the dancers. With breathtaking choreography, stunning costumes and an emotional storyline, “Defying Oz” captivated audiences across both performances.

LDC Dance Principal, Lauren Willis said, “This has been one of the hardest, but most magical shows we've ever created. Seeing it all come to life on stage was incredibly emotional. Every dancer should be so proud of what they achieved.”

Following the success of “Defying Oz”, LDC Dance now looks ahead to a busy summer of performances and competitions, continuing to provide opportunities for young people across the local area to develop confidence, creativity and a love of dance.

After being crowned Best Dance School (North and Midlands) at the National Entertainment Awards last September, LDC earned the incredible opportunity to represent the region at the National Finals at The 02. They successfully went head-to-head with seventeen other regional champion dance schools and won the prestigious award, "NATIONAL DANCE SCHOOL OF THE YEAR"!!

BOURNE CHESS CLUB Check This One Out, Mate!”

Bourne Chess Club in its current form was founded in March 2024 by a group of like-minded friends who enjoy the game and the social links it provides.

The club has grown and become a social, educational and competitive hub for chess players within the Bourne community. The club is open to all ages and skill levels, and we are delighted to be able to say at a recent social event to celebrate Christmas, that the age range of attendees was more than sixty years! The club currently meet in the Baxter Room within Wake House, North Street, Bourne, on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

As part of our commitment to the community, we also have a Tuesday evening session in Room 7 at Wake House for junior players wishing to learn more about the intricacies of the game. This is managed by Sam Warner as our Junior Club Co-ordinator. He is ably assisted by other members when required. This session runs from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

As is the nature of club management, we take security and safety very seriously and have a clear set of rules and procedures related to safeguarding which is made available to all visitors. We encourage guardians to attend all sessions.

We have seen junior players who have come through Sam’s excellent tutelage move over to the Thursday night sessions and we very much feel that this is a valuable transition for the youngsters involved.

In addition to its social element, the club has also entered teams into both Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire County Competitions, and we are pleased to boast that the club won the league in its inaugural year in 2024/’25 and have performed well with two very competitive teams during the 2025/’26 season.

Anyone interested in coming along is welcome on any Club Night for a free ‘taster evening’. The club welcomes all skill levels and is open to encouraging social and competitive chess. You are sure of a warm welcome.

You can contact the club via our Website, Facebook page or via Wake House directly, should you like a chat ahead of attendance.

Probate: Helping Families Through Difficult Times

The Deepings is a wonderful community, built on strong family connections, friendships and neighbours looking out for one another. Yet, like every community, there are times when families face the difficult experience of losing a loved one.

Alongside the grief and emotional challenges that come with bereavement, there are practical matters that need attention. One of these is probate – a term many people have heard but few fully understand until they find themselves needing to deal with it.

Probate is the legal process of managing someone’s estate after they have passed away. This can include dealing with bank accounts, property, investments and personal possessions, as well as settling any outstanding debts before assets are passed on to beneficiaries.

The probate process often feels overwhelming at an already stressful time. Executors are responsible for valuing assets, dealing with a multitude of agencies, ensuring any tax obligations are met, and distributing the estate correctly. These responsibilities carry legal obligations, and mistakes can sometimes lead to delays, additional costs, and personal liability.

Whilst some estates are straightforward, others can be more complex than they first appear. Professional support can help ease the burden by guiding families through each step of the process. For many people, having an experienced professional manage the process provides valuable peace of mind during an emotional time.

Planning ahead can also make life easier for loved ones. Having an up-to-date will and discussing your wishes with family members can reduce uncertainty and make the administration of your estate far more straightforward.

Second Helicopter Appeal Launched

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) has officially launched a public appeal to help fund a second helicopter, which could save hundreds more lives every year.

The charity has already secured pledges and donations for most of the £7m needed and has booked its place on the production line. It’s now launching the Mission Possible 2 Appeal to raise the £500,000 needed to get the second helicopter in the air next year.

For more than thirty years, the LNAA’s highly skilled crews have been by the side of thousands of critically ill and seriously injured patients, delivering advanced, highly specialised treatment and care. However, over recent years demand for the service has increased by 135%, placing increasing pressure on the charity’s current resources. The average number of helicopter missions per day currently stands at five this year so far, which is an increase from four last year.

Compared to the twenty-one different air ambulance charities across the UK, the LNAA covers the largest geographical area (3,500 square miles) with just one helicopter. There are now at least

one to two major medical emergencies across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire every day that LNAA cannot attend because it’s already deployed elsewhere.

CEO, Karen Jobling explained: “A second helicopter will mean we can reach around four hundred additional patients every year and ensure more families get the chance to have their loved one return home.”

The new AW109 helicopter is expected to be operational in October 2027 – but public donations are vital to achieving that goal. Several fundraising activities are already planned, including the Lincoln Dragon Boat Festival on July 11th. Karen said every penny raised will bring the charity closer to making the impossible, possible.

Poem of the Month

Th e N a g g er

“Jack! This tap is dripping…and it’s driving me insane, And when you find the energy… perhaps you’ll fix the drain. It’s been blocked up for ages now…it seems you just don’t care. You’ll sit and watch that ‘goggle-box’ till pigs fly through the air.”

He bites hard on his old black pipe…and strokes his balding head. He’s heard that voice for forty years… she even nags in bed!

“Now shut up Maggie, there’s a love…I’ll do the jobs tonight.”

“You’ll do them now…then get a bath…you look a scruffy sight!

Our Brian’s bringing home his girl…and let me warn you now If you’re not on your best behaviour…there’ll be such a row! And if she’s got that skirt on that comes high above her thighs… And you look more than once my lad…I’ll blacken both your eyes!”

How different his life could have been…he muses quietly. Her voice still ringing in his ears…he finishes his tea. He reaches for his jacket…and before more trouble starts, He slips out to the local…for a friendly game of darts.

Words from the Mayor

Councillor Paul Fellows

When Judi and I moved into the area, I was invited to join the Bourne Lions Club. My first assumption, because this is such a rural area, was that it must have something to do with animal husbandry and, more to the point, where did they keep the lions?

I was soon put in the picture about what the Lions Club is and does and, probably because of my obvious childishness, was asked to direct the Annual Lions Pantomime. At that time, every year, in order to raise money for good causes, the Lions produced a pantomime which was performed with brilliant reviews at the Corn Exchange! (Oh no it wasn’t!) I went on to direct three of these and eventually left the Lions to form Bourne Youth Theatre, whilst the Lions went on to greater things.

Bourne Lions are my chosen “Community Organisation” for this month.

Bourne Lions Club was established in 1975 and has always been looking for ways to help the community of Bourne and the surrounding area. Lions Clubs are volunteers dedicated to making a difference in their local communities. They fundraise and support local charities in many ways and are always proud to serve.

Every Christmas, they organise for Father Christmas on his sleigh to tour the town and, every summer, hold a ‘Funday’ for the whole community, usually on the Recreation Ground in Bourne.

Whilst the membership is currently low, incoming president, Dave Kaye is looking to build alliances with similar organisations in Bourne to support our town in the best way possible, that is practically! All new ideas for projects are welcome. If you feel you could help our community, whilst joining one of the friendliest organisations there is, please email: lions@bournelions.org.

By the time you read this, you will all hopefully have had a really jolly time at the Picnic in the Park, brought to you by Bourne Town Council, Bourne United Charities and people who love this town.
