Those longed-for sunny days and warm evenings could at last be here, so let the outdoor fun and games begin! It seems only weeks since the garden furniture and barbecue were safely stashed away for winter, and now, here we are … ready and willing to brave whatever the elements decide to throw our way. As I write, a torrential storm has just been followed within minutes by the sun. Oh, to be in England now that summer’s (nearly) here! Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month!
One very significant birthday this month (and one which I dare not forget!) sees our amazing Sales Account Manager for our Wisbech and March issues, Paula Kirtland, reaching the grand age of - -! Have a great day, “Big Sister!”
A reminder to you all that June 21st happens to be Father’s Day, so love and best wishes go to my husband, Chris, and father-in-law, Rich.

As parents, we’re always reminding our children to use “please” and “thank you”. It was most amusing, then, to recently hear two of our young granddaughters politely asking ‘Alexa’ for some music. “Alexa, please play songs by Taylor Swift”, Nancy and Violet requested in turn, innocently not realising yet that they are dealing with an inanimate piece of machinery, not requiring the polite approach! Still astonished by the epic performance of Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe in “smashing the two-hour barrier” for an official marathon, in London, our wonderful sporting summer continues this month with the men’s cricket First Test against New Zealand on June 4th, and the FIFA World Cup starting a week later. Bring it on!! And finally:
➡ When Ed heard that a bee has five eyes, he said, “Yeah, but it’s only got two ‘e’s”.
➡ I once saw a sign that read, ‘Watch for Little Children,’ and I thought, “That sounds like a fair swap.”

Bourne’s popular independent footwear and clothing retailer, Buckles and Bows, held a very successful fashion show at Bourne Town Football Club on Friday, April 17th. Owner, Amanda Fowler organised the event, and models ‘strutted their stuff’ along the catwalk to raise funds for St Barnabas Hospice, an independent charity that provides free, specialist palliative care for anyone who needs it in Lincolnshire.
Friends and family helped raise more than a staggering £1,200 in aid of the charity which offers support to more than 12,000 people affected by a life-limiting or terminal illness.

Amanda remarked, “It is so rewarding to do the fashion shows and they are extremely popular. We have done them before and sold the tickets through the shop. Most of the models in the evening were friends and customers.”
The models, including Fiona Hill, Alison Ringham, Sue Wilson, Sue Humphries, Helen Lunn, Jane Good and Sharon Norman, showcased clothing which ranged from size eight to twenty-two, and accessories from the spring/ summer collection. The raffle earned £450 alone, and another fashion show will be taking place on Friday, October 16th in aid of Bourne and District Flower Club.

Lebanon is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and has a winemaking culture dating back several thousand years.
Multi award-winning Chateau Khoury winery is in the Bekaa Valley, at the eastern foothills of Mount Lebanon. Their vineyards enjoy perfect conditions for the growing of high-quality grapes, ultimately leading to the resulting high-quality wines.
Chateau Khoury Rêve Blanc (13% vol). This straw-yellowcoloured wine, from Chateau Khoury, has an abundance of flowers and ripe, summer fruits on the bouquet. Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Riesling grape varieties are utilised, to a great advantage, to produce this very popular wine. The mouthfeel is excellent, promoting a superb flavour, to give an extended sensation, for the palate’s delight.
Chateau Khoury Cuvée Ste Thérèse (13% vol) is a very easydrinking wine. Cherry red, in colour and produced using Caladoc and Pinot Noir grape varieties, this fruity wine pairs very well indeed with meats and a good number of other dishes, splendidly.

Chateau Khoury, Château Symphonie (13.5% vol) I found to be a deep-red production, with a powerful bouquet and having a long palate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah grape varieties give the ‘Symphony’ of aromas and flavours. An absolute delight to accompany casseroles and red meat dishes of cuisine. This hugely pleasing red wine favourite, has many red wine lovers, with its impressive bouquet and long palate sensation.
Chateau Khoury Pérséïdes (14.5% vol) is another red wine that pleases numerous connoisseurs. This full-bodied, most impressive red production has a superb bouquet of ripe, dark-coloured fruits for the nasal senses, plus a mouthfeel and palate that is simply wonderful. Produced with the ‘finest of the finest’ fruits (mainly Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape varieties) being selected, this wine certainly delights and impresses.

The Signet Collection is an awardwinning portfolio of boutique hotels which includes The Barnsdale, near Oakham.
As The Signet Collection prepares to grow, it recently announced a series of exciting developments, and to explain everything, a ‘Summer Soiree’ was held on April 23rd, to which my husband Chris and I were invited.
Great food and drink, served with genuine hospitality, is at the very heart of The Signet Collection. In recognition of this, and to continue to develop and enhance dining experiences within the hotels, Richard Robinson has been appointed Culinary Director, whilst Jack Bartholomew rounds off the Food and Beverage team as Head of Wine. Both bring impressive reputations and much valuable experience at the highest level. Other significant appointments include Daniel Vale as HR Director, Jen Paylor as Commercial and Marketing Director, and Charlotte Crofts as PR and Communications Manager.
The Summer Soiree was designed to introduce Richard Robinson and the new menu which he has created and which was offered to us all. Richard has previously supported the culinary efforts across sites including the Royal Opera House and Kew Gardens, and he’s worked at very prestigious events such as the Buckingham Palace Garden Parties. Needless to say, our expectations were enormous, and, delighted to report, we were not disappointed
Alongside the food, we were introduced to Signet Collection’s wine partners, (Elise and Marie from Cremant, and Amanda from Ultimate Provence). The contribution they made to what was a most memorable evening was as impressive as the food on offer.

Each hotel in the Signet Collection blends heritage, comfort, and fun with warm hospitality and exquisite food to create meaningful stays in time-honoured places. Besides The Barnsdale, the Signet Collection includes: The Mitre, Hampton Court; The Retreat, Elcot Park; and The Alfriston, South Downs.
Please visit www.signet.ltd for more details.

We are an honest, friendly shop, selling dresses that love you. We will always listen to you to find the right colour, style and size that’s both within your budget and that will match your personality.

Congratulations to Jenson Bee (aged 9) who won our Easter Egg Treasure Hunt Competition.
By correctly matching the images placed in the windows of shops and offices around Bourne with those in our April issue, Jenson bagged himself a fabulous “Chocolate Explosion”. The youngster regularly visits his grandparents, Ian and Ruth Bell, who live on North Road, and they assure us that Jenson is thrilled and that the prize will definitely be handed over when Jenson is next in town …
(Yeah, whatever!!! Ed.)

CoppaFeel! is a breast cancer awareness charity based in London, focused on promoting early detection of breast cancer by encouraging women under thirty to regularly check their breasts.
Linda Kinch explains, “A good friend of mine, Michelle Collins, was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago. Thankfully, she caught it early and, after surgery, is now doing well. Last year, we both undertook a half marathon for the charity Coppafeel!
Michelle also completed a five-day, 100km trek last November in the Sahara with them too.
This year, to up the ante, we are both trekking a marathon in the Peak District on May 9th, and I am tackling a 100km trek with 130 others on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset over the week, commencing on June 6th.
I have a hefty target to achieve, fundraising for Coppafeel! and while I have already raised a huge amount (we held a Tea Party

at the Abbey Church Hall recently, for instance, where we raised £247.10) there is still a long way to go.
Please visit my JustGiving page and consider helping me to reach my goal. Thank you so much.”

Most tender crops should now be ready for planting out and with the risk of frosts gone, it should be safe to do so. Make sure to harden off plants by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over several days and water thoroughly, before and after planting.
To minimise evaporation, water early in the morning or late in the evening. Also, plants benefit from deep watering less often, rather than everyday light watering, as this encourages roots to grow downwards which builds resilience in dry spells. As the crops will now be showing more vigorous growth, some will benefit from extra feed. Tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers in particular benefit from regular feeding with a potassiumrich fertiliser. For fruiting crops compost, wellrotted manure, or comfrey tea make excellent natural feeding options; feed once a week.
Not only will your crops benefit from the longer sunnier days... so will the weeds! Try to keep them at bay as they use the water and nutrients that your crops need and shade them from the light. Here are a few tips for keeping them at bay:
• Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove remains, so that they won’t re-grow.
• Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use a lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

• Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.
• Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction.
• Earth up potatoes, and harvest earlies towards the end of the month.
• Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off and keep birds off, by covering your plants with netting.
• Cut down broad beans just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen.
• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots.
• Sew Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the “Longest Day” (June 21st) as it is less likely to bolt – sowing in succession is a good idea.
• This month, apples have what is called “June Drop” where the tree gets rid of excess fruit. If the branches are still overcrowded, it is worth thinning them out.
• After you’ve picked the last of the rhubarb, give them a good feed of well-rotted manure mixed with compost or Growmore so that they can build up strength for next year.
• Sow maincrop swede and turnips.
Make the most of the long June days!

Phone scams are taking a sinister twist as a new approach sees victims’ voices being cloned. It takes just three seconds of audio to clone a voice, and the latest fraud tactic seems to be targeting older people. Criminals are using AI technology to clone people’s voices and set up unauthorised direct debits over the phone, according to new evidence from National Trading Standards. The advanced voice cloning is part of an organised criminal operation that harvests people’s personal data to target victims with a wave of scam and nuisance calls.
The process usually starts with a ‘cold call’ claiming to run a survey. This may seem harmless enough, but in fact it is designed to gather detailed personal, health and financial information. The criminals use this data to develop AI-generated voice clones, used to simulate consent for direct debits, deceiving even legitimate businesses and financial providers. These details appear then to be passed or sold to other criminal operations who, with the details, can easily circumvent the banks and set up payments without the victim’s knowledge. Worryingly, victims often do not realise payments are being taken.
As part of the data, figures from National Trading Standards show that 21% of adults receive scam calls or texts most days, and almost 9% receive them every day. This new wave of technologically sophisticated scams highlights the need for increased vigilance, particularly among older people who are often specifically targeted.
Some of you may have seen the subject covered on a recent episode of BBC’s “Morning Live” with Scam Interceptor, Nick Stapleton. His advice is to stay silent on the phone if you receive a cold call or a call you are not expecting and / or simply hang up without engaging in conversion. Ultimately, be cautious about sharing personal information over the phone and to be alert to any suspicious activity on your accounts. If you or someone you know receives unexpected calls asking for personal information, it is recommended to hang up and contact your bank or service provider directly using trusted contact details.

Last month, popular estate agent, Newton Fallowell described how the Bourne property market (PE10) is showing remarkable resilience and value for money, with buyers currently enjoying the widest selection of properties in over ten years.
One of the most powerful drivers for Bourne’s property market, they opined, was its reputation as an educational hub, with Bourne Grammar School, Bourne Academy, along with three excellent primary schools proving to be a great attraction. This month, they consider another advantage possessed by the town, before moving on to their current market appraisal.
Bourne offers a rare combination of rural charm and high-speed connectivity, making it a premier choice for professionals and commuters.
❱ ‘The Peterborough Pipeline’: Bourne is situated just a half-an-hour drive from Peterborough, from where high-speed rail services reach London King’s Cross in as little as forty-six minutes [1].
❱ Road Connectivity: The town is served by the A15, providing a direct north-south artery toward Lincoln. The A1 is easily accessible within twenty minutes, linking residents to the national road network.
❱ Regional Hubs: Neighbouring Stamford and Spalding are both within a twenty-five-minute drive, offering easy access to diverse shopping, dining and entertainment.

2. Dataloft Inform / PriceHubble: PE10 Market Pricing and Rental Data (April 2026).

The era of “wait and see” is transitioning into a period of predictability. The Bank of England base rate sits at 3.75% (as of April 2026), a significant improvement from previous peaks. There is now more “fixed-rate” confidence, (with leading 5-year fixed rates stabilizing near 4%). What’s more, lenders are becoming more competitive, with some now offering over five times income multiples for qualified buyers, thus boosting borrowing power.
Bourne’s rental market is buoyant and undersupplied, making it a premier choice for investors. There is a high demand, with average rents in Bourne running at approximately £1,106 p.c.m. The constant influx of families seeking access to local schools ensures a permanent demand for high-quality rental stock [2]. Furthermore, local rents are rising steadily, protecting yields even as financial landscapes shift.
Waiting for rates to drop further can be a costly strategy. As confidence returns, competition for the best homes in Bourne will intensify, potentially driving prices back up. By acting now, you could secure today’s choice and price, before the next market upswing. For more advice, please contact us on 01778 422567 or at 2 North Street, Bourne, PE10 9EA.

QWhat is changing under the Employment Rights Act 2025 when it comes to unfair dismissal?
The Employment Rights Act 2025 is expected to reduce the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims from two years to six months, with the change anticipated from January 2027. Employees recruited before then may still qualify from January 2027 if they have six months’ service at the point of dismissal, so decisions made now could be assessed later.
QWhy is this a concern for business owners?
A shorter qualifying period means less time to assess suitability and higher legal exposure early in employment. Tribunal claims are time-consuming and costly: legal fees can be £5,000–£20,000+, and compensation for unfair dismissal can be significant, alongside management time, disruption, and reputational risk.
QHow can businesses protect themselves when recruiting new employees?
Start with a clear job description and objective criteria for selection. In interviews, be transparent about duties and standards, and keep notes of questions, answers, and reasons for selection; this demonstrates a fair, consistent approach if decisions are challenged later.
QWhat role does the probationary period play under these new rules?
Probation becomes your key window to set expectations and address issues. Hold regular review meetings, confirm objectives in writing, record feedback, and evidence any support offered. If it’s not documented, it’s hard to prove a fair process.
QWhat role does the probationary period play under these new rules?
For managing performance, employers should implement structured and regular review meetings, ideally monthly, to assess progress, provide feedback, and address concerns early.
QWhat should employers do if a new starter is not meeting the required standard?
Act promptly and consistently: explain the shortfalls, set clear improvement targets and timescales, provide reasonable support/training, and keep detailed records of meetings and outcomes. If dismissal becomes necessary, a wellevidenced process is your best defence.
QWhat is “constructive dismissal” and how does it relate to unfair dismissal claims?
Constructive dismissal is where an employee resigns because they believe the employer fundamentally breached the contract (e.g., unfair treatment, lack of support, or failure to follow procedure). If the qualifying period reduces to six months, more employees may be able to bring these claims, so fair processes and clear communication matter throughout employment, not just at dismissal. Under the new rules, employees with six months’ service may be able to bring constructive dismissal claims.

QWhat is the key takeaway for local businesses?
Good HR practices are essential: clear roles and expectations, fair and consistent decisions, structured probation reviews, and strong written records. If you’re unsure, get HR advice early; it can prevent costly disputes later.

In the following twentyfour hours, Etta and her family will go through a day that is surprising and life-affirming, in this moving but ultimately uplifting read.

The year is AD 60, and Nero Claudius Caesar is Emperor of Rome, and while he rules with an iron fist and a hot temper, the threat of traitors is never far away. With Queen Boudicca leading the British revolt, the Gauls rebelling in the north, and Rome a glittering tinderbox, the whole Empire could soon go up in flames – and not even the Emperor may be spared its destructive touch. The final instalment in Conn Iggulden’s epic Nero Trilogy is a breathtaking, unmissable read from a master of historical fiction.

Li fe today is full of distractions: phone alerts, email, social media, 24-hour shopping or entertainment, and it’s everywhere. It’s a bit like a rabbit hole waiting for you to go down to spend large chunks of your day or waste your day away.
People who procrastinate tend to choose short-term gratification over long-term, more worthwhile goals. They do this regardless of whether the delay has serious health, academic or financial implications.
Chronic procrastination is not a mental health diagnosis, but is related to:
◆ increased stress/anxiety
◆ poor grades in school
◆ poor health
◆ addictions
◆ poor performance at work
◆ failing to reach important goals.
University and college students procrastinate up to 46% and report they procrastinate on specific academic tasks, and about 10% to 20% of adults in the general population are chronic procrastinators.
Procrastination has often been attributed to poor time management, but chronic procrastination is due to poor self-regulation. The prospect of enduring a tax return, exam, the housework, or odd jobs just doesn’t have the same immediate appeal as shopping, indulging in an
addiction, social media, being slumped in a chair, or caffeine.
“Tug-of-war between your present and future selves”
Procrastinators are engaging in a constant tug-of-war between your emotionally driven, pleasure-seeking, ‘current self’, who would rather watch TV than say go to bed, and the rational, reasoning, ‘future self’ who ends up being tired the next day due to lack of good quality sleep. So, you are letting your ‘future self’ down. There’s a difficulty in bridging the gap between the present and future self which is one factor that may contribute to the mood and behaviour regulation failure that drives us to procrastination.
Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for overcoming procrastination; it empowers you to gain access to the deeper, subconscious part of the mind, speaking to it directly. Hypnosis allows you to nourish the subconscious with new information, removing those negative thinking patterns that are holding you back. Helping you to train your mind to get into the zone, focusing on the task at hand, and allowing your mind to be quietly getting things done. Hypnotherapy also helps to improve general lifestyle, and make changes to improve sleep, healthy eating and stress, which are all energy stealers. Once you increase energy, your motivation increases too, allowing you to just get on with things effortlessly.

Foot Bliss Bourne is a predominantly clinic-based foot care service, although home visits are available within Bourne and the surrounding villages.
Nicola London understands the pressure we put on our feet and the damage that everyday wear and tear can have on our overall foot health, from her long experience as a runner. Foot care is for everyone, young and old. It is important to maintain good foot health at an early age to avoid complications later in life.
Good foot health involves you looking out for: any changes to your feet, both physical changes and pain; cracked, dry skin; sore ingrown toenails; and thickened and discoloured nails, which could indicate a fungal condition. Diabetics should take extra care, as any changes could be an early indication that there is an underlying issue.
From her welcoming, relaxing clinic, based in Burchnell Gardens in Bourne, Nicola’s treatments include fungal nails, thickened nails, verrucae, ingrown toenails, general foot health and nail trimming, diabetic foot health assessments, neuropathy testing, corn removal, and callus reduction.
All Nicola asks is that “You bring only yourself and your medical history to the clinic; I do the rest while you sit back and relax and enjoy a complimentary foot massage at the end of your treatment. Many clients comment that they leave feeling they are walking on air!” There is currently capacity for new clients and Nicola is happy to discuss any foot health concerns that you may have.

Google Review - Thank you!
I have booked all my holidays over the past 12 months and future ones with these guys and couldn’t be happier! Nothing is too much trouble and they are more than happy to help! I recommend to everyone!

When I first joined Bourne Town Council, I never thought that I would ever become Mayor of Bourne and here I am, Mayor for the third time and happy to be so. Judi and I will be proud and honoured to represent you and our wonderful town throughout the coming year.
Every month in these columns, I will be highlighting voluntary organisations that thrive and which support the wider community of Bourne. As well as “putting them in the spotlight”, I want to be able to share how we can support and possibly join them so that they can grow and survive. Our community will only ever be as strong as the people within it.
The first of my highlighted organisations is Bourne Town Council itself!
❱ ❱ The Council is made up of elected members of the public who, as Councillors, represent and support the whole of Bourne.
❱ ❱ The work of the Council is financially supported by a small proportion of the Council Tax which the Council manage on your behalf. Being a Town Councillor is a voluntary position and carries no remuneration.

❱ ❱ At present, we have several vacancies on the Town Council and because we will be required to have elections this time next year, the most sensible course of action is to fill these vacancies by ‘co-option’.
❱ ❱ Simply put … we need you! If you think you want to, and can support your town as a Councillor, please don’t dismiss it outright! If your initial thoughts are “I could do that” or “I’d like to do that”, please don’t lose those thoughts outright with “I’m the wrong gender, age, ethnicity or person”. You’re not and you can. Find out about it and give it serious thought.
❱ ❱ Even though the structure of our District and County Councils will change at the end of the year, our Parish and Town Councils will remain the same and will have greater importance in making sure our voices are heard. We need to make sure our views about things that truly matter to all of us are heard.
❱ ❱ If you feel you want to, and can, support our town, please find out more and apply. If you’ve ever been exasperated by local government and hurled abuse at anyone who’d listen, now is your chance to come and be heard.
This year, Judi and I will be raising monies for our chosen charity which will be the “Carers and Sitters Service”.
Please feel free to contact me through Bourne Town Council for details about being a Councillor or if you want me to feature your organisation.

Would you like to help shape the future of our community of Bourne, Cawthorpe, Dyke and Twenty?
A vacancy has arisen on Bourne Town Council for the position of Town Councillor. We are looking for enthusiastic and committed local residents who care about our town and want to make a difference.
As a Town Councillor, you will:
➜ Represent the interests of residents and local businesses
➜ Help make decisions on local services, projects and initiatives
➜ Contribute to discussions on how the town's budget is spent
➜ Work with other councillors and the community to improve life in our area
Who can apply?
Anyone aged 18 or over who meets the eligibility criteria to stand as a councillor (e.g., lives or works in the town, or within 3 miles of it).
Interested?
Visit our open surgery at the Town Council Offices in the Bourne Corn Exchange on Saturday 6th June 2026 10am-12pm to chat with councillors and find out more.
To request an application pack, please contact: 01778 426123

The closing date for applications is Friday 12th June 2026. Make a difference to where you live — become a Town Councillor!

Choosing a new bathroom involves understanding your bathing needs, but there is a variety of options to consider when deciding to alter your bathroom.
One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower; this is suited to those with limited mobility and who struggle to step into a traditional bath. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats mean you can relax and let the water wash over you. Grab rails provide further safety, and they come in a variety of modern designs, so they won’t make your bathroom feel clinical.
However, some people still prefer having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats (sometimes heated), quick fill and drain options, and some even have jacuzzi functions to help ease aches and pains.
The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles, with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain, making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers. However, they can be more costly.
It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose, but at Living Well Bathrooms by AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look. At AHM we believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable bathing so we’ll always find a solution to meet your needs and your budget.

Approaching Grimsthorpe Castle along its northern entrance drive, visitors are captivated by the majesty and grandeur of this Lincolnshire landmark, home to the Willoughby de Eresby family since 1516. This triumphant North Front is the work of one of England’s greatest architects, Sir John Vanbrugh.
Vanbrugh’s tremendous accolade is all the more extraordinary considering his lack of formal training in architectural design. Born in 1664, he had stumbled into architecture after a colourful life as a soldier, diplomat, spy, prisoner, courtier and playwright. He was a maverick and a polymath, with social connections in the uppermost echelons of society confirmed by his membership of the exclusive Kit Kat Club. No wonder he is known as ‘the rockstar of the English baroque’!

When Robert Bertie was created 1st Duke of Ancaster in 1715, he was intent upon a spectacular facelift for his ancestral family seat of Grimsthorpe Castle. He turned to Sir John, his old friend and relation, for

help. Vanbrugh had already made a name for himself in creating the great Baroque mansion of Castle Howard for the Earl of Carlisle and the magnificent palace of Blenheim for the Duke of Marlborough.
Vanbrugh made plans for refacing all four facades of Grimsthorpe Castle for the Duke, but it was the 2nd Duke of Ancaster who acted upon Vanbrugh’s designs after his father’s death. Around 1722, Vanbrugh began work on remodelling Grimsthorpe’s North facade as a bold statement of visual power.
The spectacular scale and symmetry of this entrance front is a monument to Vanbrugh’s mature style and carefully considered architectural language. The perfection of the great arcaded entrance Hall, described as ‘unquestionably Vanbrugh’s finest room,’ blends architectural daring with Vanbrugh’s love of the theatrical.
This year, on the tercentenary of Vanbrugh’s death, Grimsthorpe is one of six sites across England celebrating his extraordinary talent. With a generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and overseen by the Georgian Group, the “Vanbrugh 300 Festival” includes a special programme of exhibitions, talks, and events for all age groups.
Highlights at Grimsthorpe include a fascinating Vanbrugh exhibition; a weekend of fun family workshops and storytelling; talks on Vanbrugh’s life and Georgian society; and a Vanbrugh drama medley performed by Cambridge University Amateur Dramatics Club. For further information on the festival, including how to book events, please refer to the website at www.grimsthorpe.co.uk/vanbrugh-300/.

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

For those of us of a certain age, it was very common to see people who were wanting to live together getting married. Society and the social order tended to bolster this, together with religious views of the time. Having children would present another crucial question. It cannot be that programmes on our television caused the change, but rather the writing reflected it.
However, these changes caused substantial risks in the eyes of the law, where parties do not marry, unless they take steps to mitigate these risks.
When a couple marry or enter a civil partnership they have matrimonial rights under various legislation. Although a court considers whether all property can be shared equally, or what passes for it, there are many instances where a person’s “needs” for accommodation, income, capital and pensions can take precedence to this principle. So, there can be risks in marriage caused by this, depending on which party you are.
In marriage, currently, there are substantive Inheritance Tax benefits of being married, including the transferring of a personal allowance and potentially a property allowance between estates, which is not as beneficial if you do not marry. It is not, however, a reason to marry on its own … even if you do like wedding receptions!
If we are unmarried, we must mitigate the possible risks by: -
1. Making a will.
2. Making a “nomination” in our pensions, life policies and ‘death in service’ so that our partner can benefit.
3. Consider seeing an independent financial adviser or chartered accountant to mitigate tax issues where possible.
4. Consider a ‘Declaration of Trust’ for unequal capital injection into purchasing the home.
If we do not do any of this there is a heightened risk.

Bourne Ear Care was founded in May 2023 by Julia Brown who had enjoyed a long and successful career as a Hearing Aid Audiologist. Demand for her services quickly grew and in December 2024, Kayla, her daughter, joined the business. By May 2025, Kayla had taken on the majority of the home visits, allowing the team to support more people across the area.
They don’t just offer home visits — although many people love being seen in the comfort of their own home. If you prefer to go to them, they run their only private clinic every Thursday at North Shoes in Bourne.
Julia is also accredited under the NHS contract at the Bourne Galletly Practice, where patients are referred directly through their GP surgery. Anyone registered with a GP in South Lincolnshire can access microsuction wax removal with her there.
Bourne Ear Care offers a full range of ear and hearing support options, including:
◆ Microsuction wax removal
◆ Ear health advice
◆ Hearing guidance
◆ Hearing aid servicing
◆ NEW: Basic hearing health checks

Earlier this year, Bourne Ear Care began a campaign to raise the awareness of ear health, offering free ear checks at several pop-ups, in collaboration with other local organisations, including The Cedars and Wood Grange Care Homes in Bourne.
Look out for their next community events: -
◆ April: Under My Wing headquarters at 37 Wherry’s Lane, Bourne
◆ May: Mindspace, 6 Red Lion Street, Stamford
◆ September: Bourne Lions Fun Day on Bourne Recreation Ground.

What a pleasure to hear clearly again! I can highly recommend Bourne Ear Care based upon this treatment.” Robert Brayfield

It’s coming into ‘exhibition season’ for us, and this year we are showcasing The Succession Method: A clear, strategic approach to succession planning, designed specifically for business owners.
Too many businesses falter when a key decision-maker becomes unable to continue, leaving key stakeholders, partners and families facing uncertainty, delay and unnecessary risk. The Succession Method addresses this head-on by focusing on continuity, control and commercial reality.
Rather than starting with documents alone, this method begins with structured conversations about ownership, decision-making authority and future leadership. From there, it creates a tailored succession pathway that aligns

Ten years ago, with a small team of five, a big dream, and a heart full of determination, I wanted to create a care service that treated people the way we would treat our own family. That’s how Wright Care at Home began.
Our very first customers trusted us to come into their homes, into their lives, and that trust meant everything. We were guided by compassion, kindness, and a belief that care should always feel personal. From five people to today’s team of thirty-three incredible individuals, the journey has been nothing short of amazing.
But, no matter how much we’ve grown, our values have remained the same, namely; passion, integrity, kindness, innovation, communication, honesty and accountability, quality, commitment to teamwork, inclusion and diversity. I can see those values shining through in everything our team does.
Our carers are trained to support customers with health conditions enabling them to be independent in the comfort of their own homes.
One of the most emotional parts of this journey for me has been watching team members step into new roles, build confidence, and carry the same passion that started this business. Our care managers and ambassadors have grown into truly inspirational leaders. Over the years, the Wright Care family has grown in another beautiful way: we now have six little “mascots”, babies who have become part of our extended story!
● The Covid pandemic pushed us to our limits but also showed just how strong we really were.
● Ongoing pressures within the Health and Care sector.
There were many moments of doubt, but we adapted, supported one another, kept going … and grew stronger. Through every challenge we have always held onto one thing … the crucial reasons why we are here:
● To provide safe, compassionate, high-quality care.
● To allow people to stay independent in their own homes.
● To make a real difference in people’s lives.
Our carers are trained to support customers with health conditions enabling them to be independent in the comfort of their own homes.
We have a team of dedicated Dementia and end of life care champions.
Wright Care has never just been about us, it’s always been about community. One of my favourite memories will always be walking 26.2 miles along the Norfolk coast, raising over £5,000 for charity. It was tough, emotional, and incredibly rewarding.
Wright Care at Home was not built alone but shaped by Simon (my dad) and Jean (my granny), whose presence is still felt, as we continue to build this business with their hearts in mind. Their legacy lives on.
We offer

Over the years, we’ve had the honour of working alongside amazing organisations, including; Marie Curie, St Barnabas Hospice, Don’t Lose Hope, Evergreen, Dementia Support South Lincs, and local nursing teams and GP surgeries. These relationships have allowed us to do more, support more, and care better.
When I look back, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride. Achieving “Outstanding” for “WellLed” in our very first CQC inspection gave us the confidence to say we were on the right path, and a year later, being rated “Outstanding overall” was a moment I will never forget.

The “Choir of Man” is an Olivier Award-nominated musical that combines elements of a concert, a party, and a pub experience.
It features a cast of nine talented performers who deliver stunning renditions of popular songs from artists like Queen, Adele, Guns ’N’ Roses, The Proclaimers, Bon Jovi, and Luther Vandross.
The stage transforms into a lively pub atmosphere, where the audience can enjoy beautiful harmonies, foot-stomping singalongs, and engaging storytelling. The show combines moments of reflection, interspersed with bursts of communal joy and dance, making it a ‘feelgood’ event for audiences of all ages.
Discovering Magazines’ Arts Critic, Paula Kirtland, went along on the opening night on April 14th, and was to witness “a truly memorable evening.” She explains, “From entering the auditorium and being invited on stage to join the cast for drinks,

we knew it was going to be a most inclusive evening. We felt so incredibly lucky to have been part of the choirs joining in at the end too.
The set is absolutely true to life, as is the whole theme of camaraderie in the good old ‘British boozer.’ All the cast are so musically talented, and I was often finding myself laughing one minute and then crying the next, such was the emotion. Voices were in total harmony, with songs that all generations could appreciate.
I can totally see why it is such a huge hit all over the world and cannot praise the whole show highly enough. Congratulations to the whole crew, cast, and choirs.”

Rifco Theatre Company’s “Frankie Goes to Bollywood” production came to Peterborough recently and its dazzling exploration of culture and identity, set against the fascinating backdrop of glamorous and complicated ‘Bollywood’, impressed a packed house, especially our own reviewer, Claire Saberton.
This musical comedy-drama dives deep into the glitzy, high-pressure world of Indian cinema, where dreams are mass-produced, identities are reshaped, and women are expected to smile and play by the script written for them... by men!
With show-stopping choreography, lavish costumes, and a cast of unforgettable characters, this is a bold, uplifting story of ambition and transformation - a celebration of love, identity and courage, packed with joy, drama, and spectacular entertainment. at New Theatre, Peterborough

W h y , M u m m y ?
Why does the sun live so high in the sky?
What makes the clouds go a hurrying by?
Who sends the raindrops to water the trees?
Who makes the flowers and big bumble bees?
Why is my daddy so big and so strong?
When will I start to begin to grow long?
Why is my sister a horrible pest? When she is good, do you love her the best?
Who made the mountains so big and so steep?
Where does my mind go when I go to sleep?
When I am dead, will I float in the sky
With planets and spaceships and stars passing by?
I
Like all those big soldiers on ‘telly we saw?
If I work hard now and learn all I can
Will I know all the answers when I am a man?

The Old Town Hall has stood at the heart of the community for generations - but time has taken its toll. That's where you come in - by sponsoring a roof tile you'll play a direct role in preserving this special place for future generations.
You may have noticed that the scaffolding has been erected on The Old Town Hall and the first job to be done on the exterior is to take off the 200-year old roof tiles and replace them with new, ensuring that the building is watertight. We are grateful for the grant from The National Heritage Lottery Fund, but with rising and unexpected costs, we need to raise more to complete the project.
Every tile we replace helps to:
➜ Safeguard the building from further damage.
➜ Protect its history, character and heritage.
➜ Keep it open, safe and welcoming for the whole community.
