The last few weeks have made me realise just how fortunate we are, living so close to the beautiful Bourne Woods, a special dogwalking treat for our two hounds. Fabulous carpets of bluebells, celandines and wood anemones right now are an absolute delight, along with the increasing amount of birdsong, as the evenings remain lighter for longer.

It saddens me, however, when the news from around the world seems to involve a violent and unstable future for us all. If only more people were to follow those wise words of P.T. Barnum in ‘The Greatest Showman’…“The noblest art is that of making others happy.” Those people who are fondly remembered for generations are the ones who will have given their time, love, and kindness to others.

Being an optimist involves seeing “silver linings behind dark clouds”. So, whilst we are forever hearing stark warnings about “global warming”, here is some small consolation. UK wine production in 2025 recorded a 55% increase in harvest volume, compared with 2024. Approximately 16.5 million bottles were produced across the UK, and the long hot summer helped deliver good fruit quality and yields not seen for many years.

“May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope”, suggested Emily Bronte. So, are we to expect awful weather, wish that it would change and hope that June will be better? Oh, to be in England!

And finally:

May can provide a variety of adverse weather conditions, so you may have to protect young seedlings from a late frost or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have enough rain. Harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches” by cutting down the 2 litre plastic drinks bottles, (useful for protecting young runner beans and peas). Alternatives to use are fleece, bubble wrap or newspaper. Also, hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month as sometimes they are planted too early: the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate. Whatever the weather, it does seem to favour the weeds!! So, make sure these are kept in check as they take precious nutrients away from young plants and seedlings.

Other jobs to do this month include:

• Earth up potatoes-when the leaves are about 20cm tall, draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cm high: this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green and poisonous.

• May is suitable for planting out early, such as leeks, sprouts and summer cabbage. Leek seedlings should resemble a pencil in size. Make a 6-inch-deep hole with a pole

or a similar tool, place the seedling inside, and fill the hole with water. There is no need to fill in the hole with soil.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Some crops may require support ready for their growth, such as beans and peas and climbing plants. Ensure it is strong and sturdy to take the weight once the fruits have formed, as well as the foliage, and that it can withstand any winds.

• Seeds to sow out this month include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

• Try “succession sowing” a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply, rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

• Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and towards the end of the month, when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

• Put up supports for climbing beans and runner beans. You can either buy a readymade support or make a wigwam or row using bamboo canes or hazel poles.

How to Spot a Rogue Trader on Your Doorstep, or on that of a Vulnerable Neighbour

Spring is here and many of us are looking to spruce up the exterior of our property, including the garden, driveway, fascia and cladding. There is a fair chance that, before you can research and contact a tried and tested, reliable tradesperson, some unscrupulous cowboy builder or rogue trader will be knocking on your door, or on that of a vulnerable, elderly neighbour.

An older person in England and Wales becomes a victim of fraud every fifty-six seconds, according to research! According to an analysis of the Crime Survey for England and Wales by MoneySuperMarket, 22.7% of respondents, aged sixty-five and over, reported being the victim of fraud between September 2024 and 2025.

Whatever the job, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Beware of these “red flags” and report anything you believe may be suspicious:

• A vehicle that has been parked outside the house for some time or which frequently comes and goes.

• Your neighbour being kept talking on the doorstep for what seems an unusual length of time.

• Work being carried out with no obvious signs of health and safety, for example, workers on the roof with no protective clothing or scaffolding.

• Work that looks shoddy, untidy or unfinished, even to the untrained eye.

Doorstep rogue traders have a knack of catching people off guard. Remember:

• Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment.

• Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing.

• Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out.

• Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work.

• Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach.

• If you do not feel confident in asking them to leave, take a leaflet and report it to the trading standards or 101 if you suspect something isn’t quite right.

The Cedars Hosts a Free Women’s Health Event!

The team at The Cedars Care Home in Bourne hosted a free event focused on Women’s Health in March. Over twenty members of the community joined Dr Sara Moran from the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough as she delivered a short presentation on women’s health and the menopause, before answering a variety of questions from participants.

Dr Moran brought a wealth of knowledge and specialised expertise in sexual and reproductive health, women’s health, menopause care and trauma-informed care. Menopause affects not only physical health, but emotional wellbeing, relationships and quality of life.

Dr Moran discussed the importance of lifestyle medicine along with medical treatments such as HRT, homeopathic approaches to the menopause, and the importance of seeking advice for distressing symptoms.

Senior General Manager, Rebecca Aldred said, “We want to help and support relatives, friends, neighbours and members of our local community who are currently experiencing or approaching menopause. Thank you to Gaynor Keys and Dr Sara Moran for giving their time so generously.”

The Cedars Care Home is run by Barchester Healthcare and provides residential care, nursing care and palliative care for fifty-six residents, from respite care to long-term stays.

Ingredients

Serves 6

1.25kg new potatoes, halved

10g dill, chopped

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

150g half-fat crème

30g flat-leaf parsley, chopped

1½ tbsp sherry vinegar

Jersey Royals are now in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe... worth firing up the barbecue for!

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

• If using a gas barbecue, pre-heat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

My notes (Still wines):

DENBIES FLINT VALLEY (11.5% vol). This dry white wine pleases on the nose with fresh citrus notes that carry through to the flavour. Splendid with poached and smoked salmon.

DENBIES SURREY GOLD (11% vol) is a medium-dry, white wine and is good for the nasal senses, with the fragrant bouquet enticing to the floral/fruit hints for the mouthfeel and the palate’s delight. Pairs very well with foods of a spicy nature, including many Asian dishes.

If a ‘pink’ wine is required, I would suggest DENBIES ROSE HILL (11% vol). Summer fruits come to mind for this easy-drinking delectation, which I found refreshing and great to add colour to a dining table, as well as for al fresco occasions. A fantastic accompaniment to salads and white meats.

DENBIES REDLANDS (12.5% vol) is my selection for an excellent, smooth, medium-bodied dry red wine. Overtones of ripe, dark fruits are in abundance, for this crimson-coloured production, right from the bouquet. Perfect to accompany casseroles and red meats.

My notes (Sparkling, aged, bottle-fermented wines):

DENBIES GREENFIELDS (12% vol). The colour of golden-straw entices to the aroma and the tasting – an excellent example of a sparkling wine. Crisp, rich and with an extended palate.

DENBIES WHITEDOWNS BRUT (12.5% vol) is very popular, satisfying a lot of sparkling preferences and tastes. With fresh, ripe fruits evident for the mouthfeel, I found this production to be crisp and most pleasurable.

DENBIES CUBITT BLANC DE BLANCS (12% vol) is a much sought-after sparkling production from this company, which is only produced in the best of seasons. The quality is very much appreciated by many. The bouquet is pleasant and appealing, then, the taste buds are activated, continuing on, to a grand finish.

Looking into the ancient forests and woods of this area of South Lincolnshire made me think of May Poles and the traditions of May Queens.

There is a lovely picture of the children of Aslackby School, from almost a century ago, dancing around their May Pole, but where did the tradition originate?

May festivities were first recorded in Ancient Roman times. The Floralia – the Festival of Flora –took place between April 28th and May 3rd, in honour of the Goddess of Flowers, Fertility and Spring. It involved athletic games and theatrical performances.

In the Celtic world, the opening of the summer pastures for grazing was marked by the “Fire of Bel” or Beltane Festival; a significant festival marking the beginning of summer, the peak of spring and the return of fertility to the land. Wild blossoms decorated the doors and windows of houses, while great bonfires were built on the last night of April to bestow their protective powers on livestock and their herders. A tree would be stripped of its branches, then decorated with flower garlands – the forerunner of the now recognisable May Pole.

Like many other festivals, May Day was a topsyturvy affair when a ‘lord and lady’ would be chosen from among the ordinary people of the community to preside over the day. Eventually,

the focus shifted completely onto the woman, and she became known as the May Queen. Banned by the Puritans, the traditions were re-established after the Restoration in 1660 by King Charles II.

The Victorians took this concept to heart, by which time the May Queen was embodied by a young girl decorously dressed in white and crowned with flowers. Accompanied by a ‘court’ of other girls, the May Queen had become a symbol of purity and the promise of spring.

Importance Of May Day

In some areas, May Day celebrations were accompanied by the mad antics of Jack-in-theGreen (also known as the Green Man) and the rampaging of Hobby Horses, but in almost all, Morris Dancers would carry out an early morning performance at sunrise.

In Bourne, it would seem, a rash of May Queens was very much the vogue throughout the 1960s and 70s, as winners and their pages were chosen in ceremonies held mainly by the local churches.

Fancy Fly Fishing?

Here’s Your Chance To Give It A Go!

Stowe Fly Fishing Club hides itself away in plain sight in a gem of unspoilt nature just off King Street at West Deeping. Treasurer Andy told me that often, when he fishes in early summer, his favourite time of year, there is no-one else at the lake, and all he can hear is a woodpecker, a cuckoo and the jagged rattle of reed warblers. A dozen red-crested pochard over wintered at the lake and a bittern has been heard and seen.

Frequent visitors include herons, egrets, ospreys, red kites, buzzards, tufted ducks, cormorants, mink and otters, although the latter three are not welcomed by the fly fishers!

The Club itself has a limited membership, but has vacancies for a few more this season, which runs until the end of December. At a cost of under £1 per day, the annual subscription compares very favourably to local fly-fishing clubs and is far cheaper than the large local reservoirs run by Anglian Water.

In addition, there are two locally built Coulam rowing boats available. Fishing is from the bank

or boat. Many members fish for the rainbow trout and return their catch, but taking the odd fish for the pot is allowed. The fish are locally sourced from River Gwash Trout Farm, and the reputation of the Club is such that employees of the trout farm have become members. Stocking with two hundred rainbow trout and an occasional “brownie” of 1kg and upwards occurs several times each season.

Stowe Fly Fishing Club encourages members of all levels of skill and actively encourages newcomers. Through close links with Peterborough District Angling Association, introductory open days with coaching are available, the next one being on Saturday May 2nd.

The club is also lucky to count, amongst its members, two of the current England Ladies Fly Fishing squad, and a ladies national coarse fishing ex-champion, who has been converted to fly fishing!

at New Theatre, Peterborough

The stage production of “Single White Female” is a bold and modern reimagining of the 1990 book, adapted for the stage by Rebecca Reid and directed by Gordon Greenberg. I’m pleased to report that the play kept my husband, Chris and I entertained, shocked at times, and on the edge of our seats right up to the end!

Starring the multi-talented Kym Marsh and actress/presenter Lisa Faulkner, the play invites you into a world where trust is fragile, friendships are tested, and secrets lurk behind every closed door.

Allie (played by Faulkner) is a recently divorced mum, balancing being a single parent with the launch of her tech start- up. When she decides to advertise for a lodger to help make ends meet, the delightful Hedy (Marsh) offers her a lifeline. But as their lives intertwine, boundaries blur, and a seemingly perfect arrangement begins to unravel.

Faulkner’s fine portrayal of single motherhood and her creeping unease come across as very human. There is a fierce, protective energy to her performance that adds to the emotion of the whole play. Hedy, meanwhile, is compelling, seductive and utterly terrifying; a performance that slowly tightens its hold on you.

For Chris and I, “Single White Female” was totally gripping, emotionally charged and brilliantly performed. It pulls you in, keeps you guessing, and afterwards, it keeps you talking.

Footlights Go All Tudor

Once again, Bourne Footlights are in full rehearsal for their next summer production – or rather, that should be “productions”. This time, they will be showcasing two one-act plays, both with a Tudor theme.

The Regina Monologues re-imagines the famous mnemonic “divorced, beheaded, died, etc” through the voices of six women who were all married to the same man called Henry. Each woman tells her story, revealing her perspective on love, betrayal, survival, and identity.

The women speak from a shared space, a room they have all inhabited and, through their distinct modern voices, they explore personal experiences such as miscarriage, love affairs, betrayal, resilience, and even sexual abuse, blending humour, pathos, and raw honesty. Although rooted in Tudor history, the play draws parallels with the experiences of contemporary women, making it relevant, poignant, and often sharply funny, as you would expect when women give their very frank appraisals of a shared husband! (NB: Due to the content, it is advised as being suitable for over-14s only)

Henry’s End, by contrast, is a period play that dramatises the last hours in the life of King Henry VIII as he lies dying from illness and injury. Confined to bed, Henry is visited by a cast of figures from his past by his court jester, Will Somers, with impersonations of the wives and advisors he wronged during his tumultuous reign.

As the play unfolds, Henry wrestles to confront his guilt, stubbornness, and conscience: the marriages that ended in ruin or execution, the broken promises, and the lives that were upended by his decisions. But can Henry face his misdeeds and find a measure of repentance and peace before death? Or will he stubbornly cling to his pride until his dying breath?

Final Words from the Mayor

Fiona and I have been attending several Civic events, including a Civic Dinner for Cllr Bob Broughton, Mayor of Market Deeping at The Black Horse in Baston.

Agreat evening, during which I had the pleasure of giving the return speech, on behalf of all the guests. We were delighted to attend the seventieth wedding anniversary party of Roy and Joan Goldsmith. It was wonderful to be part of a large family celebration for such a marvellous milestone anniversary. The same evening, we were in Newark to attend the Mayor of Newark, Cllr Barbara Corrigan’s, Charity Civic Dinner. An excellent evening with a fantastic ambience in the beautiful function room within the Town Hall.

I also had the immense pleasure of formally welcoming the new “Army Air Cadets” detachment to Bourne, the first one in Lincolnshire! This new detachment will meet on a Thursday evening at the Air Cadets building on the Austerby. It was great to see such a turnout of the old and new, with many Senior Officers and parent helpers. After I had the honour of cutting the ribbon with Lt Keeran Hitchborne, the new cadets were then presented with their sky-blue berets.

Finally, we went to Raunds to attend the Civic Service of Cllr Richard Levell, the Mayor of Raunds. An impressive turn out, with the Lord Lieutenant and the High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, along with many other Civic Heads. Again, it was good to meet other Mayors who you wouldn’t normally see, and a great opportunity to promote Bourne.

It’s going to be a busy period leading to the end of my “Mayoral year” this month. I have had the enormous pleasure of representing this wonderful town, parish and community over the last fifteen and a half years. I would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us over these years.

The list would be enormous to thank all the people and businesses individually, but we truly are very grateful for the support. On a personal note, I wish to thank my wife Fiona for all her support - you are quite simply my “Rock”!

Peterborough event offers support for menopause strugglers

Anew event in Peterborough is addressing a growing issue affecting women across the UK, that of feeling dismissed or unheard when seeking help for menopause symptoms.

The Midlife Reset Summit, taking place on Sunday, May 17th at The Bull Hotel, Peterborough, has been created in response to what organisers describe as a “gap in support”, where many women feel like they’re being gaslit about their

own health. With NHS services under increasing pressure, many women report being told their symptoms are “normal” or left without clear guidance, despite experiencing fatigue, anxiety, brain fog and weight changes.

“Women are telling me they know something isn’t right, but they’re not being listened to,” says organiser Chris Shingles. “This event is about giving them clarity, practical tools and a way forward, not just being told to put up with it.”
