I’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we move on each year from those cold, dark mornings and all that rain and those gale force winds. Blossom is now on show and summer is nearly upon us, and there are smiles on people’s faces.

Sport continues to provide so many thoughtprovoking moments. It’s much more than just the game. On February 7th, the Scottish men’s rugby team surprisingly lost their opening Six Nations game in Italy. Soon afterwards, Scotland won their next three matches. Recently asked whether he found that Italy result such a disaster, Scotland’s Head Coach, Gregor Townsend, simply smiled, implying that it had been a chastening experience for the squad, from which they have since built a more effective team and recently hammered both England and France. Learning from life’s “bad days”, seeking new ways forward, and believing in ourselves, is such an important lesson for us all.

And finally:

North Shoes was founded in 1876 by William North, a shoemaker from Haconby.

The business later moved to the premises on North Street, Bourne, from where William’s great-great-grandson, James, now continues the tradition of supplying quality footwear with honest dedicated customer service for all.

Six generations … and still on the original premises!

1William North 1876 to 1920.

While William was working as a shoemaker in Haconby, he and his wife, Sarah bought a shop in North Street in 1876, and, in those early days, William continued the shoemaking and repair business in Haconby while Sarah looked after the shop. In around 1900, they moved into the Bourne premises, which became the family home and the base for the business.

William and Sarah had nine children – and it was their fourth son, Frank (Jack), who provided the second generation of North Shoes.

Experienced, knowledgeable and friendly staff

The Bourne store is managed by Director, Paul. Alice is E-commerce Director, Michelle Accounts Manager, and Rebecca and Rachel who both work for Alice on the e-commerce team boast many years of valid experience.

Sara is Manager at the Stamford store in Red Lion Square, with Vicky, Sandra Bates and Rebecca providing their considerable expertise on the shop floor.

James North’s daughter, Jasmine (21) works for the team, part-time at weekends, as does her brother, Freddie (19), alongside their other commitments. The sixth generation of the “North dynasty” is now here!

Celebrating a Century and a Quality Footwear and Quality Fitting

Frank (Jack) North 1920 to 1955. Frank took over the running of the business and Norths continued making and repairing boots and shoes and buying in stock from outside manufacturers. Boot and shoemaking ended on the premises in around 1930 and from then on North Shoes relied entirely on footwear bought in from outside manufacturers, setting the trend for today.

Frederick John (John) North 1946 to 1986.

Jack was joined by his son, Frederick John (John) in 1946, and worked alongside each other until Jack retired in 1955. Resuming after the war in 1946, John led the company for forty years and was responsible for its first expansion, launching a shop in Holbeach in 1960.

4 Roger North 1964 to 2008.

John was joined by his elder son Roger in 1964, who worked alongside his father until John retired in 1986. Roger gradually took over the reins of the business in the early 1970s and his wife, Michelle, took on the book-keeping responsibilities from John.

5 James North 2006 to date.

In 2008, Roger’s son James, became the fifth generation of Norths, and was soon “taking on the world”, having launched North Shoes’ website www.northshoes.co.uk in 2009. This has effectively become its “third shop”, and the business can now boast customers all over the globe. A new store in Stamford was opened in July 2011and 2015 saw the upgrading of the successful website with a new modern look and a dedicated on-line team.

Jasmine North 2021 to date. Freddie North 2023 to date. Jasmine does website customer service at the weekends while studying at university. Freddie works three days a week in the shops while also working as a personal trainer locally.

Patrick’s Mega Moroccan Mountain Mission

The annual Atlas Mountain Race is a 1,400 km (870 miles) selfsupported ‘ultra’ cycling race on the most rough and rugged roads and tracks of the Atlas and Anti Atlas mountain ranges in Morocco.

Bourne cyclist Patrick Schwarz (25) took his first leap into the fantastic world that is ‘ultra’ racing in February. Many times, he was to question whether it was too enormous a leap to pedal in the same company as some riders with experience of the Tour de France, but he kept reminding himself of the old maxim, ‘No pain, no gain’, and that nerves are completely natural.

Here is his account of eight days in the saddle:

“The challenge ahead was unfathomable and maybe naivety got the better of me when signing up but, at the same time, maybe it was exactly this that kept the light alive and the dot moving (on the tracker) for eight savage days. Racing such a distance across mountain ranges and desert is bound to bring adverse weather conditions and consequent challenges … and we got exactly that!

The first night saw over eight hours of torrential rain as we ascended to snowcovered mountain tops and navigated icy roads in what felt like minus doubledigit figures. The second day and night

brought gale force winds, upwards of 100km/hour, mixed with sandstorms.

As the race progressed and fatigue grew, the conditions flipped to 30+ degree heat and blue skies. The weather swings and landscape changes humbled even the strongest of riders and we were all made to feel minuscule by our fabulous surroundings. It brought a rollercoaster of emotions as we pedalled on, willing the end to get closer in what felt like an eternity.

That being said, the journey brought with it the most amazing encounters with some utterly fascinated and accommodating local people, as well as the fellow riders sharing their struggles and stories. I reflect on this experience with great pride and an overwhelming sense of both achievement and fulfilment. I can only recommend for anyone to try their hand at an ‘ultra’ race and hope that they too can experience the satisfaction that comes with pushing one’s physical and mental boundaries.”

The 2026 race covered 1431 km (890 miles) due to re-routing, following torrential rains and dangerous high winds on the first two days.

Where kindness and care go hand in hand: life at Digby Court

Smiles and laughter filled Bourne on Tuesday 17 February 2026 as residents from OSJCT Digby Court brought joy to the local community, showing that life in a supportive care home is nothing short of vibrant.

Residents Peter and Peggy, joined by Home Manager Michaela and Area Operations Manager Shelly, headed into town with a simple mission: to brighten as many people’s days as possible.

In the days beforehand, residents enjoyed creating colourful handmade cards with cheerful messages. The activity showcased the creativity we hold within in our homes and the warm, sociable atmosphere that makes everyday life at Digby Court so special.

With cards and small gifts in hand, the group visited local shops, cafés, GP surgeries, dental practices and a nearby nursery. Smiles appeared instantly, conversations flowed, and their thoughtful gestures were warmly received by everyone they met.

As well as spreading kindness, the outing was also about staying active, engaged and connected with their community. Peggy reflected on the experience, saying she had “such a brilliant time getting out into the community and seeing so many people smile.” Her words capture the spirit of life at Digby Court, where residents are encouraged to live purposefully and remain involved in the wider community.

True Love Lives Here: Ken and Diane’s Story

A romantic tale from Roop Nahil, Director of The Willows Residential Care Home in Rippingale.

This Valentine’s Day, we didn’t just share flowers and cake - we shared a beautiful love story that has stood the test of time.

Ken and Diane first met in 1965 while working for the RAF. What began as workplace chats soon turned into daily lunch dates at the Malcolm Club — a small routine that quietly changed both their lives.

Ken’s job meant travelling far and often, with postings in many places. While miles apart, their love grew through handwritten letters, and later, daily phone calls. Diane stayed home with her mum, waiting patiently for Ken’s return each time.

When asked about his fondest memory, Ken smiles and tells of a simple walk home after a night out in Stamford. Turning to Diane, he said, “You will marry me, won’t you?” Her reply? A big smile and, “Oh… go on then!” They’ve now been together for sixty years and married for thirty of them!

Ken says he couldn’t love anyone more than he loved Diane then — and still does now. His face truly lights up whenever he sees her. Diane, equally devoted, says Ken has always been a kind, gentle man who has treated her exceptionally well all her life — and that she loves “the silly sod.”

For their special Valentine’s meal, Ken thoughtfully requested their favourite — steak — and surprised his wife with a bottle of champagne, which we were delighted to provide, and a beautiful Valentine’s card.

Ken didn’t need to come into The Willows as a resident, but he simply couldn’t bear to be apart from Diane. After all these years, together is still exactly where they belong.

A reminder to us all that true love isn’t loud — it’s written in letters, shared lunches, soft smiles, and choosing each other every single day.”

“Mamma Mia!”: Care Home Residents Celebrate National Pizza Day

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne had a fantastic time celebrating National Pizza Day on February 9th ... a brilliant excuse to sample lots of delicious, warming pizza!

Overseen by Head Chef, Radovan, staff and residents experimented with many different types of toppings and flavour combinations - from the exotic, to the classic and everything in between! Wood Grange also had some fantastic “little helpers”. Some pupils from nearby Westfield Primary School came for an intergenerational visit, helping residents decorate their pizzas; some added pineapple, others preferred spicier options, and some stuck to a good old Margherita!

t appears that the automatic right to evict a tenant on lawful notice is about to come into law. We all know there are many good tenants and landlords. However, there are also bad tenants who do not pay rent and landlords who do not fix their properties.

There are existing statutory provisions to deal with these issues. Removing the so-called Section 21 Housing Act Notices may cause an even greater shortage of housing stock and higher rents. We are waiting to see.

In these sunnier afternoons, it is helpful to remember that our summer holidays are no longer just a distant wish. Remember to always check the small print and that you are protected by APTA. The Consumer Law can help, but you need the easier former route if something goes wrong.

Hello, my name is Finn and I’m an 11-year-old karting enthusiast, proudly representing the local area. I started racing at club level in April 2025, and in 2026 I’ll be taking a big step forward by competing in a National Championship. Woods and Parks Surrounding Bourne

Whilst you may expect our area historically to show as a watery place, as early as the Domesday Book of 1086, Bourne itself was recorded with eighty acres of woodland. Interestingly, Lincolnshire was the only county to have its woodland assessed almost solely by “x acres wood for pannage” which gave commoners the rights to release swine into the area to forage for acorns, beech mast and chestnuts.

The most extensive and densely wooded area in the whole of Lincolnshire was South Kesteven. In Domesday, this is written as Chetsteven, with “Chet” deriving from the British ‘ceto’ or Welsh ‘coed’ meaning wood.

For around one hundred and fifty years from the Norman conquest, successive kings had earmarked land as “Forest” which was a deeply unpopular practice. This legal term safeguarded an area exclusively for royal hunting and prevented the common people from collecting firewood, using the land for grazing, for charcoal burning or for cutting turf.

Henry I (1100-1135) created the Forest of Kesteven that covered an area from Swaton to Market Deeping to Wragemere Stake and north to Bicker Haven, the

area being a measured boundary which fell under Forest Law. William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke who acted as regent for nine-year-old Henry III, understood that this was deeply unpopular and drew up the Charter of the Forest in 1217 that can still be seen today at Lincoln Castle, alongside Magna Carta. This enabled freemen to regain entry to the land and exploit its resources.

In 1536, ahead of the visit of King Henry VIII to Charles Brandon at Grimsthorpe Castle, a licence was issued to “empark” the surrounding land, to create new royal hunting grounds. Two parks were created of about 1,200 acres - one near the Castle, the other to the south, solely for red deer. These parks were in existence until World War Two.

Of course, this was not the end of land enclosure and securing land for the pleasure of wealthy owners. Thankfully, today we benefit from the Forestry Commission, who manage woodlands across the country and maintain those around Bourne, for everyone to enjoy.

Website Adds Peace of Mind When it Comes to Selecting a Trusted Trader

A new website has been highlighted by TV consumer champion, Matt Allwright, on a recent episode of “Watchdog”. The site provides a user-friendly online checker tool for customers searching for reliable and trusted businesses.

The Financial Conduct Authority www.fca.org.uk regulates the conduct of around 42,000 businesses in the UK to ensure that financial markets work well. But it isn’t just limited to financial companies; professional trades can also register and in fact, you may find some of our own valued Safe Local Trades members listed too – providing another layer of security.

Our members (or other home improvement companies) may appear on the register because they act as credit brokers or appointed representatives for ﬁnance companies, allowing them to offer payment plans, loans, or insurance for their work.

This may include offering ﬁnancing options (like twelve months interest-free) to pay for a new boiler or bathroom installation; they are engaging in regulated credit broking for example. This requires authorisation from the FCA.

The website also offers advice and signposting on checking ﬁrms, spotting the warning signs when it comes to scams and how to report suspected scams.

If you get an unexpected call and feel uneasy, pause and check for these red ﬂags:

• Is it unexpected? Scammers may reach out suddenly through calls, emails, texts, social media, mail, or in person.

• Are you pressured to act fast? They may push you to invest quickly with limited-time deals or bonuses.

• Does it sound too good to be true? Be wary of promises of high rewards.

• Is the offer exclusive? Claims that you've been specially chosen should raise suspicion.

There will be plenty to keep you busy this month as the days are longer, soil temperatures are rising and it should be warm enough for many crops to be planted outdoors… but be wary of late frosts!

Aim to get all your potatoes planted by the end of the month – plant out chitted second early potatoes in the ﬁrst two weeks of the month and maincrop potatoes in second two weeks. Second earlies and maincrop need more growing space so plant them about 38cm (15 inches) apart and 75cm (30 inches) between rows. When the shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil.

If you want to grow asparagus and haven’t already prepared your bed, do it this month or it will be too late. Plant the crowns by digging a trench 12 inches deep and add some wellrotted manure, making a 4-inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before harvesting – it’s well worth the wait!

You can sow several seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli, Florence fennel, courgettes, summer squashes and sweetcorn are just a few.

Other jobs:

• Last chance to plant onion sets and sow aubergines and tomatoes indoors for transplanting out.

• Most root crops can be sown now; it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips.

• You can sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot, cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves, leeks, cabbage and salad leaves. They can be sown in pots, modules or prepared seed beds from which you can transplant them. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules and they have grown a couple of “true leaves” prick them out and move to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny days but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches.

• Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture.

• Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help.

• Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans.

Ruth Bath has lived in Bourne for twelve years since leaving the village of Corby Glen. Ruth has written poetry for many years and has had it published locally. I once was a baby…so sweet and brand new Then became the child…with a big world to view As a teenager…I practised flapping my wings Once a woman… I discovered many beautiful things.

When a bride…I found a love true and strong And being a mother…a unique love came along I read the room…solved problems… reliably on call Confident…capable…and forever walked tall.

So busy…several decades descended …and passed Where on earth did they go? How long did they last? Then out of the blue… I awoke one morning To discover in shock…my old age was dawning!

Here’s Your Chance To Give It A Go!

Stowe Fly Fishing Club hides itself away in plain sight in a gem of unspoilt nature just off King Street at West Deeping. Treasurer Andy told me that often, when he fishes in early summer, his favourite time of year, there is no-one else at the lake, and all he can hear is a woodpecker, a cuckoo and the jagged rattle of reed warblers. A dozen red-crested pochard over wintered at the lake and a bittern has been heard and seen.

Frequent visitors include herons, egrets, ospreys, red kites, buzzards, tufted ducks, cormorants, mink and otters, although the latter three are not welcomed by the fly fishers!

The Club itself has a limited membership, but has vacancies for a few more this season, which runs until the end of December. At a cost of under £1 per day, the annual subscription compares very favourably to local fly-fishing clubs and is far cheaper than the large local reservoirs run by Anglian Water.

In addition, there are two locally built Coulam rowing boats available. Fishing is from the bank

or boat. Many members fish for the rainbow trout and return their catch, but taking the odd fish for the pot is allowed. The fish are locally sourced from River Gwash Trout Farm, and the reputation of the Club is such that employees of the trout farm have become members. Stocking with two hundred rainbow trout and an occasional “brownie” of 1kg and upwards occurs several times each season.

Stowe Fly Fishing Club encourages members of all levels of skill and actively encourages newcomers. Through close links with Peterborough District Angling Association, introductory open days with coaching are available, the next one being on Saturday May 2nd.

The club is also lucky to count, amongst its members, two of the current England Ladies Fly Fishing squad, and a ladies national coarse fishing ex-champion, who has been converted to fly fishing!

early signs that a price is not landing well

When you’re getting ready to sell your home, it’s easy to focus on the result, the offer you want, the move you’re planning, and how quickly you’d like everything to happen.

A home can look fantastic and still struggle if the price creates hesitation. Often, the signs appear quickly. You may see lots of online views but not many enquiries, viewings that do not turn into offers, or feedback that focuses on value rather than the home itself. This is one of the reasons the launch price matters so much. The first couple of weeks are often when your property is at its most visible online, and when buyers are most curious. If the price does not feel right at that point, you risk losing the strongest wave of attention.

Why “We can reduce it later” can be a risky approach

“Let’s start high and see what happens” is a common thought. While that might sound sensible, the reality is that you only get one first impression on the market. When a property launches too high, it can sit longer than expected. Buyers notice that. They may start to wonder why it has not sold, or assume reductions are coming, even if the home is in great condition.

Over time, that can reduce negotiating strength, encourage lower offers, and make it harder to create urgency later in the process.

How the right asking price can work in your favour

Pricing accurately does not mean underselling your home. It means giving it the best possible chance to perform well from day one.

A realistic asking price is more likely to attract motivated buyers quickly, generate stronger early interest, encourage confident offers, and reduce the need for later price changes. In many cases, the best results come when buyers feel they are seeing something that represents good value, and act decisively because they don’t want to miss out.

Of course, price is only one part of the bigger picture, but it is the part that everything else depends on.

Not long ago, I was sitting with a client who had recently lost a close family member. It was an emotional conversation, as you might expect, but what struck me most wasn’t just the grief they were experiencing — it was the confusion.

“Nick,” they said to me, “I don’t even know where to start.”

When someone passes away, families are suddenly faced with a long list of unfamiliar responsibilities. Probate, executors, estate administration, Inheritance Tax, paperwork, banks, property — the list can feel endless. Probate is one of those topics that many people have heard of, but few truly understand. Some assume it will be incredibly complicated, while others think it will be quick and straightforward.

Fiona and I were very pleased to recently attend a service of dedication for the Chairman of Lincolnshire County Council, Councillor Stephen Bunney.

Held at the Parish Church of St Thomas in Market Rasen and followed by a reception at The Festival Hall, it was a very well attended event, graced by the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, the Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, the Police Chief Constable, the Chief Fire Officer, military ‘top brass’, along with numerous clergy and town mayors and members of the public.

We were the most southerly represented town council from Lincolnshire, so it gave us the opportunity to let other dignitaries know where we are on the map. I take the duty of representing our town seriously and remind them we are just as important as anywhere else in Lincolnshire.

We also attended a short service for the Covid-19 ‘Day of Reflection’, held at Bourne Leisure Centre. Organised and promoted by South Kesteven District Council, it gave us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the lasting impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After formally welcoming those attending, I invited Dom Brister from Don’t Lose Hope to speak about the background and meaning of the tree

installation. Finally, our third speaker was Father Stephen Buckman from Bourne Abbey Church who delivered some very wise words during his reflection and address, which gave us all much to contemplate.

We were then invited to tie a ribbon on the memory tree, and everyone is welcome to go along and do the same. A big thank you goes to Sally Cade, event steward from SKDC. The tree can be seen on the wall by the main entrance of the Leisure Centre and similar ones can be found in Market Deeping, Stamford and Grantham.

Finally, it was an absolute pleasure to be invited to the Civic Dinner held for the Chairman of South Kesteven District Council, Councillor Ian Selby. Held at Arena UK, Grantham, it was wonderful to see a great turnout for Councillor Selby who has been working hard as a councillor for some thirty years. He’s been enjoying his year as Chairman, and rightly so, for his incredible service to the Council and community.

Working Families Scheme (WFS)

The WFS is available for anyone living in the Parish of Bourne where there are one or more working adults in a household and in receipt of benefits of less than £200 per month (excluding child benefit and childcare costs).

You should have savings of less than £10,000 and a combined household gross income under £50,000 per annum (evidence will be required).

Paws for thought

Saturday May 9th is a date all animal lovers in Bourne should make a note of, as that is when a special Pet Service will be taking place at Bourne Abbey Church. The Service will begin at 3pm, last no more than 45 minutes and offer the opportunity for pet owners to thank God for all the joy their furry friends bring to their lives. After the Service, pets (and their owners!) are welcome to have treats and refreshments in the Church Hall.

To make sure that all animals feel safe and comfortable, dogs must be toilet-trained and kept on a lead at all times. Smaller animals such as cats and hamsters are equally welcome, but they must be kept in a pet carrier.

It will even be possible for larger animals to take part in the Service: they can remain outside the Church with their owners, but the doors will be open so that everyone can feel involved.

Those who would like to remember a pet who is no longer with us are also very welcome to bring along a photo for a blessing. And finally, if you don’t have a pet but would like to take part in the Service, do feel free to come along.

Even if we don’t have the same array of animals we saw in The Vicar of Dibley’s Pet Service, we are sure nevertheless that it will be an un – fur – gettable occasion!
