o here we go into 2026 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future. On behalf of our hard-working team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2026, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends.

I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an ‘old friend’, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions.

Winter is still well-established, but spring is on the horizon – it sometimes feels however that that horizon gets further and further away with each visiting storm rampaging through! Much better weather for a roasting “down under” though – a pity it’s our cricketers getting roasted (in ‘Starc’ contrast to their Aussie hosts!) Still, the Six Nations rugby tournament is barely weeks away … and it is our footy/rugby season when all’s said and done! Finally, a couple of crackers to start the new year merriment: •

WHY DO WE NEED A PROPERTY PROTECTION TRUST?

ost people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.

The solution to help protect your estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the

property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Discover the River Nile by Sandal “Waterlily”

A Voyage in Harmony with the River

he Waterlily is a 'Sandal Boat’, a traditional Egyptian river sailboat, seventeen metres long, and built in 1963. It was originally used for transporting heavy goods, such as sand and stone along the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. Now, its sundeck is a perfect piece of paradise, yours for relaxing upon and having meals and drinks, and enjoying the pleasure of sailing in comfort.

Below deck, there are three air-conditioned cabins, each with comfortable beds, private shower room, clothing space and bedside storage cabinet. Two cabins have twin beds, and one has a large double bed, and the Nile can be viewed from all areas below deck. All furniture aboard the Waterlily has been hand-crafted in Luxor by a local tradesman, giving it a more traditional feel. The kitchen is where the chef prepares delicious meals to be served on deck. The food will be of Egyptian cuisine, using fresh produce, some of which can be seen growing alongside the Nile. Continental food can also be prepared and any dietary needs catered for with an advanced request. 1 cal cooking spray* 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized chunks 1 red, 1 yellow and 1 green pepper, cut into bite-sized chunks

1 onion, finely chopped

●

330ml can diet cola

●

200ml hot chicken stock

●

8 tbsp passata with onions and garlic

●

4 tbsp tomato purée

●

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

●

2 tsp gluten-free Worcestershire sauce

●

1 tbsp dark soy sauce/tamari

●

1 tsp dried mixed herbs

●

200g sugar snap peas

●

Boiled rice or mashed potato, to serve

Serves 4

METHOD

Spray a large non-stick pan with 1 cal cooking spray and put it over a high heat. Add the chicken, peppers and onion and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Add the diet cola, stock, passata, tomato purée, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and herbs and stir well. Bring to the boil, cover, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 12-15 minutes.

Add the sugar snap peas, stir and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook for another 10-15 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the veg is tender. Serve with the boiled rice or mashed potato.

For a tasty change, swap the diet cola for diet orange. Serve without rice or potato to make this suitable for a Food Optimising SP day.

New Year Festival Customs and Traditions Many of the customs of New Year festivals note the passing of time. The Romans derived the name for the month of January from their god Janus, who had two faces, one looking backward and the other forward. The practice of making resolutions to rid oneself of bad habits and to adopt better ones also dates from ancient times. Some believe the Babylonians began the custom more than 4,000 years ago. These early resolutions were likely made to curry favour with the gods. Nearer to home, the nostalgic Scottish ballad “Auld Lang Syne,” revised by the poet Robert Burns, is often sung on New Year’s Eve. Symbolic foods are often part of the festivities. Many Europeans, for example, eat cabbage or other greens to ensure prosperity in the coming year, while people in the American South favour black-eyed peas for good luck. Throughout Asia, special foods such as dumplings, noodles, and rice cakes are eaten, and elaborate dishes feature ingredients whose names or appearance symbolize long life, happiness, wealth, and good fortune. Because of the belief that what a person does on the first day of the year foretells what that person will do for the remainder of the year, gatherings of friends and relatives have long been significant. The first guest to cross the threshold, or “first foot,” is significant and may bring good luck if the person is of the right physical type, which varies with location. First foot traditions are observed, for example, in Scotland, Isle of Man, and parts of northern England. Public gatherings, as in Trafalgar Square in London or in Times Square in New York City, draw huge crowds. Many people mark the new year with religious observances, as, for example, on Rosh Hashana. Buddhist monks are presented with gifts on the day, and Hindus make oblations to the gods. In Japan, visits are sometimes made to Shintō shrines of tutelary deities or to Buddhist temples. Chinese make offerings to gods of the hearth and wealth and to ancestors.

An incredible and heartwarming tale from the letters section of the London Globe September 3rd, 1812. FOLKINGHAM, AUGUST 20th, 1812. Sir – A most extraordinary occurrence took place here last Tuesday evening. – a poor woman, who had obtained a pass billet to stay, was sitting by the fire in the kitchen of the Greyhound Inn, with an infant child at her breast, when in came two chimneysweeps who had been engaged to sweep the inn’s chimneys. The sooty imps were treated with supper, which they had begun to eat, when the younger, a boy of about seven years of age, suddenly started up and exclaimed in a frantic tone – “That’s my Mother!” and immediately

flew into her arms! – To attempt a description of the scene that followed would be fruitless; it was the meeting of an affectionate mother with a long-lost child. After collecting herself she gave the following account. Her name is Mary Davies, she is the wife of a private in the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards living at Westminster; her husband left for foreign duties on the 20th of last January and on Climbing Boys (c. On her return in the evening, the woman had decamped with her son and whilst every effort was made to discover their retreat, they had not been heard of. Hearing that the woman was a native of Leeds, she had come to the resolution of going there in search of her child, walking from London to Folkingham a distance of 106 miles with an infant not more than six weeks old in her arms, The boys’ master then told how he came in possession of the boy. At the end of last January, he met a woman and boy in the vicinity of

Sleaford, where he resides; she appeared very ragged, and distressed, and was beating the boy most severely; she then accosted him, saying that she was a long way from home, and said that if he would give her two guineas to enable her to get home, she would bind her son apprentice to him; he agreed, and the boy was regularly indentured, the woman having previously made affidavit as to being his own mother. The inhabitants interested themselves very humanely in the poor woman’s behalf, by not only paying her coach fare back to London but also by collecting for her the sum of 2l 5s. (£2.25)

Busy Wood Grange “Elves” Raise Money for Alzheimer’s

taff at Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne swapped their uniforms for costumes on National Elf Day (Wednesday December 3rd) to raise funds to help people living with dementia. Launched by the Alzheimer’s Society and delivered direct from the North Pole, Elf Day was created to sprinkle some festive cheer on fundraising, towards finding a cure for dementia. From stripy socks to head-to-toe elf outfits, anything goes – there’s “snow better way” to raise money to help beat dementia! On the day, residents and staff at Wood Grange were able to enjoy elf-themed games including festive flower arranging and a Christmas sing-along party, as the team at the home donned their elfish apparel.

Janet, a resident of the home said, “It is always a very festive day, and the staff always make us laugh in their costumes. What a wonderful way to raise money for charity!” Katya, General Manager at Wood Grange and “Head Elf”, said, “Elf Day at Wood Grange is always a lot of fun and we are home to some of the most unusual elves I have ever seen! You’ll find the sign-up sheet with Rowena Roberts, the pub’s lively host. Every performer is allowed three songs to perform along with a live band, and afterwards you are rewarded with a free drink voucher for your bravery. The night is all about creativity and bravery, not perfection. It’s all about having a good time, whether you are on stage or in the audience. We also had the great pleasure of attending the annual Bourne Grammar School Speech Night in the Abbey Church. Well done to all the prize

winners. The drama and music were impressive, especially the Choir’s outstanding performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Sincere thanks to headteacher, Mark Brunker and Chair of Trustees, Ian Mears. Finally, Fiona and I were delighted to attend the Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner at Edenham Village Hall, organised by the Bourne and District Round Table. Well done to all the “Tablers” for getting the event back on the calendar, the first since Covid. We had a delicious meal produced by Rachel Clarke Catering, followed by Christmas Carols from the Tuneless Choir, and a visit from Santa Claus himself, who likewise provided such wit and entertainment! Special thanks to all the “Tablers” and helpers, and to Chairman Bod Kennington and his wife Theresa, and to President John Christie for making us so welcome. College Players on Top Form with

The College Players, an amateur musical theatre society based in Stamford, and with a reputation for high-quality shows, certainly impressed our theatre critics, Paula and Claire, on their opening night production of “Betty Blue Eyes” at Stamford Arts Centre. It is based on the Alan Bennett film, “A Private Function”, and set in 1947 Yorkshire, with post-war austerity and rationing the norm. As Paula explains, “A very enthusiastic cast tell the story of

a celebration of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth to Prince Philip. Due to the rationing, spam was to be used as the banquet meal to celebrate in most towns and villages … but not in this Yorkshire town. “Some of the local dignitaries are secretly rearing a pig to serve roast pork to impress the local spivs and snobs at a very ‘Private Function’. Their plan is thwarted, however, by an over zealous government

inspector and the pig, Betty Blue Eyes, is saved, much to the approval of the locals who end up making a delicious spam pie for the banquet.” Claire concludes, “It was a production quite unlike any other we have seen by the College Players; it had us and the rest of the theatre chuckling with laughter throughout. Well done to all the cast, orchestra and production team. We look forward to the 2026 production.”

Grand Christmas Wreath-making Session Raises Over a ‘Grand’!

The Bourne branch of Blood Cancer Charity held a Christmas wreath-making event at the Masonic Hall in Bourne on Sunday December 7th, in memory of John McGregor and Taff Roberts. It was a tremendous success, well attended, and enjoyed by everyone who made a variety of beautiful festive wreaths. At the time of going to print we have raised a total of £1,304.

Strictly Stars in Smash-hit Supernatural Thriller

ollowing seven West End, London, seasons, a record-breaking UK and Ireland tour, and thirty productions across the globe, the stage phenomenon, “2:22 A Ghost Story” swept into Peterborough on November 24th for a run of seven performances at the New Theatre.

The play centres on Jenny (Dooley), who is convinced her new home is haunted. Her husband Sam (Clifton) dismisses her fears, but when their dinner guests Lauren and Ben join the debate, belief and scepticism collide. Determined to get answers, the group agrees to stay awake until 2:22 am to uncover the truth, with chilling consequences. The ending was a tour de force, leaving many of us gasping at the incredulity of how the brilliantly created plot line should reach such a climax.

“A slick, chilling romp of a play” (The Guardian), “A modern classic” (The Sunday Times) and “Sheer nerve-shredding escapism” (The Mail on Sunday) are amongst many accolades the play has already received, so I was intrigued to be able to share the opening night’s performance with an enthusiastic audience, not quite sure just what to expect.

The small cast of six managed to create the necessary atmosphere of a dinner party turning sour, as events unfolded and the tone darkened, with accompanying strobe lighting, loud noises and screams, to add to the heightening tension. There were several moments of humour too, especially Clifton’s “Dad-dancing” and the ways in which the inanimate ‘Alexa’ even joined in, pitting wife against husband with the requests she faced from them both.

The play was written by Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts, “Uncanny” and “The Battersea Poltergeist”. I suspect the presence in the lead roles of husband-and-wife duo, Kevin Clifton and Stacey Dooley, (whose Strictly Come Dancing heroics will have endeared them to many) proved a considerable attraction. 82

Local Care Home Goes Back in Time

he Cedars Care Home in Bourne went back in time in early December when residents and their guests were treated to a talk from guest speaker, Chris Carr from Briga and Friends, a local historical re-enactment group. Chris gave the residents a fascinating talk on the traditional way to celebrate with ‘A Medieval Christmas’, an informative and entertaining costumed presentation, before treating us all to some homemade Figgy Pudding. The residents learnt that Christmas is traditionally a time of fasting and penitence and that it was bad luck to decorate until after dinner on Christmas Eve. They would then festoon their homes with holly, ivy, mistletoe, bay and rosemary. You had to pay attention to your holly because, if the spiked leaf came in first, the man was in charge of the home; if it was the smooth leaf, then the lady of the house would rule for the coming year. Residents were particularly taken with the amazing hand sewn costume, a kirtle and dress that would have been worn by a very wealthy lady of the fifteenth century. We were then invited to ask questions, which Chris answered using her incredible local and historical knowledge. Resident, Anne Miller is a big fan of Chris’s talks and was thrilled to have a photograph taken with her. She said, “I always look forward to her talks; she knows so much and is very entertaining. Yes, it’s fascinating!” Rebecca Aldred, Senior General Manager of The Cedars Care Home said, “We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment at The Cedars as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme for residents, and to respond to the wishes and interests of our residents.
