200 Wicked

After thirteen seasons on the high seas, Wicked Tuna reaches an incredible milestone – 200 episodes – in 2024. The series has celebrated one of America’s oldest industries since first premiering on National Geographic in 2012 and has made internationally recognized stars of the intrepid Gloucester commercial fishermen who brave the unrelenting North Atlantic waters to catch the elusive bluefin tuna.

From the start, Wicked Tuna set out to document the skill and coordination it takes to wrestle a giant bluefin tuna using the centuries-old method of rod-and-reel fishing. The gripping action and human perseverance has drawn millions of loyal viewers around the globe who tune in to watch the high drama and the banter between the captains and crew– sometimes playful, sometimes heated – as the Gloucester fishermen vied to outdo each other every week in the hopes of taking home the most lucrative catch and ending the season as the top-earning boat in the fleet.

Every great series starts with a great story – and Wicked Tuna has always delivered a compelling mix of fast-paced action and human drama that has excited and inspired viewers ever since its first episode. But one

of the show’s most compelling characters has always been the town of Gloucester itself. America’s oldest seaport, Gloucester and its rich history set it apart from any other town or city along the entire East Coast. Almost every book about maritime history is based in and around this area.

Back in 2012, Pilgrim Media Group came to scout the location and the show’s producers were instantly hooked on the stories the local fishermen told of reeling in massive

bluefin tuna. Many of those fishermen became part of the original cast of Wicked Tuna and a new era of recognition for the city was born. Over the years, Wicked Tuna has contributed to a boost in Gloucester’s tourism industry, with fans searching the docks for their favorite captains and boats much like they searched for local landmarks after the film The Perfect Storm came out. Gloucester was always the bluefin capital of the world and the fans of Wicked Tuna have been drawn to Gloucester to experience the excitement for themselves.

For many of the beloved cast, the biggest surprise has been the opportunities that have come with being on a show that is both a

BIGGEST FISH: in the first season, The Christina caught the largest bluefin in series history, weighing in at 1,078 lbs and measuring 118 inches.

national and international success. You won’t have to look very far to find Wicked Tuna merchandise in Gloucester and beyond. Many cast members make appearances at regional and national boat shows across the country and some have even traveled to meet groups of fans overseas.

As National Geographic and Pilgrim Media Group reflect on 13 great seasons and 200 episodes, the appreciation for how warmly Gloucester has embraced the series, the cast and crew, and the dedicated fans is hard to put into words. Four Seasons of Birdwatching on Cape Ann

Cape Ann, renowned for its stunning coastline and charming towns, isn't just a haven for summer vacationers. In fact, it holds a well-kept secret for bird enthusiasts: its exceptional winter birdwatching experiences.

While spring and summer bring their own magic, the winter months reveal a different side of Cape Ann's avian wonders. As temperatures drop, birds from Canada's northern forests and arctic landscapes migrate southward, making Cape Ann their temporary home. Along the coastline, species like ducks, loons, and grebes gather to enjoy the milder climate and ample food supply.

Led by Mass Audubon's expert guides, winter birdwatching expeditions on Cape Ann offer a unique perspective. Starting at Gloucester’s Jodrey State Fish Pier, you'll be greeted by a bustling scene of gulls and

occasional rarities in the harbor's waters. Venturing further to spots like Eastern Point Wildlife Sanctuary and Niles Pond, you'll encounter a diverse array of species, from scoters and eiders to Purple Sandpipers and Cormorants.

But Cape Ann's allure isn't just about birdwatching. A stop at Rockport’s "T Wharf" offers unexpected encounters with feathered friends. Explore Granite Pier and Cathedral Rocks, where seabirds like the striking Harlequin Ducks thrive in abundance. And don't miss Halibut Point State Park, where a short walk unveils a stunning seascape teeming with coastal treasures.

Amid the serene ambiance of Cape Ann in winter, there's nothing quite like warming up with a bowl of chowder in one of its cozy eateries. Beyond the tourist season, Cape Ann reveals its true essence, inviting birdwatchers to witness its soring wonders with a backdrop of tranquility and natural beauty.

Experience Cape Ann's winter magic— where every bird sighting is a moment of awe and every landscape a masterpiece in the making.

Catch the Maritime Magic

OF GLOUCESTER SCHOONER FESTIVAL

In the heart of the North Shore’s summer calendar stands a maritime tradition that has shone for four glorious decades - the Gloucester Schooner Festival. This cherished event paints a vivid picture of wood, canvas, and water against the rugged coastline and seasoned docks of historic Gloucester Harbor. More vibrant than ever, it pays tribute to the legacy of Gloucester’s schooner fleet.

Setting Sail: The Festival’s Inception

The festival’s origins trace back to June 1985 when Gloucester Harbor transformed into a sea of sails after the American Schooner Association invited the Nova Scotia Schooner Association to a rendezvous. Daisy Nell Collinson, the festival’s beloved chair, fondly reminisces about the inaugural event:

“We had a bagpiper onboard Morning Star, to pipe our way out of the harbor. Also aboard was an artist named Bob Prouty, and my miniature dachshund named Moose. Bob Prouty had offered an original oil painting of the winning schooner, as a first prize. The winner was a Nova Scotia schooner named Fortune receiving the finished piece at the evening’s gala event."

Event excitement led to the formation of a committee, and under the leadership of Mike Costello and the Cape Ann Chamber,

the Gloucester Schooner Festival became an annual Labor Day tradition.

History on Display

The festival expanded in 1986 with the introduction of the Mayor’s Cup Race, featuring a sterling silver replica of the 1920 Esperanto Cup donated by Gorton’s of Gloucester. In a spirited 2.5-mile race, iconic schooners like Pilot, Spirit of Massachusetts, and ErnestinaMorrissey battled for glory. Captain John Wigglesworth, steering Pilot to victory, expressed “This was a big win for the great old Pilot. I hope this first victory is the beginning of the big schooners return to Gloucester - their birthplace.”

Gloucester’s schooner fleet has been well represented throughout the festival’s history. Adventure, Roseway, and American Eagle, former fishing vessels, receive

26 DiscoverGloucester.com

thunderous applause from the crowds. Special appearances by many legends like Bluenose II, Ernestina-Morrissey, Pride of Baltimore II, Spirit of Bermuda, Virginia and many others heighten the festival atmosphere annually. The launch of Columbia in 2015, a steel replica of the iconic Gloucester racing fisherman, saw the creation of the Columbia Trophy in 2016.

Medium-sized and smaller vessels like When & If, Brilliant, Alert, and Tyrone challenge their larger counterparts, providing thrills for festival fans. Local heroes Thomas E. Lannon and Ardelle reflect Gloucester’s fishing fleet. With the addition of Isabella in 2023, five vessels at the Festival were built by local legend, Harold Burnham, preserving a centuries’ old legacy of Essex-built, Gloucester-fished schooners. The festival features numerous privately-owned vessels, essential for celebrating our shared heritage. They’re integral to the festival experience!

An Unconventional Win

In 2001, Ernestina-Morrissey clinched victory in an unconventional manner. With no wind, the race committee ruled that the first schooner to cross the start line would win. Captain Madeira recalls the moment: “With little wind and our boat drifting backwards, I allowed the crew to go fishing. In the slow

pace, I discussed with two mischievous crew members the idea of putting a dory in the water. Finding no rule against it, they rowed the 19th-century schooner over the line, employing what old-timers called a ‘Nova Scotia tow.’ Many competitors were left shaking their heads for not having thought of it themselves.”

Legacy and Horizon: Celebrating 40 Years

The Gloucester Schooner Festival’s enduring popularity is a testament to its profound cultural connection with the city. Celebrating its 40th year, now at Maritime Gloucester, an educational non-profit preserving Gloucester’s working waterfront, it hosts thousands of visitors with deck tours, sailing, charters, demonstrations, food, fun and exhibits. Saturday’s Maritime Heritage Day and Sunday morning’s Parade of Schooners along the Boulevard are spectacles not to be missed.

We invite you to embark on an unforgettable experience at this year’s Gloucester Schooner Festival, where the sea whispers tales of the past, and the wind carries promises of a maritime future. Join us this Labor Day in celebrating the resilient spirit of Gloucester and the timeless allure of its beloved schooners legacy.

Guiding Beacons

CAPE ANN'S ENCHANTING LIGHTHOUSES

Embrace the allure of Cape Ann’s enchanting lighthouses, where history, beauty, and maritime heritage intertwine to create an unforgettable experience along the rugged shores of New England.

Annisquam Harbor Lighthouse: A timeless beacon at Wigwam Point, leading vessels to the serene waters of Annisquam River. Constructed in 1801, this quaint lighthouse stands as a sentinel of maritime history. Its charming allure is best appreciated from the water or the picturesque Wingaersheek Beach.

Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse: Standing proudly since 1835, this majestic lighthouse watches over the entrance to Rockport Harbor. Owned by the town of Rockport and embraced by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the island it calls home serves as a tranquil sanctuary for both birds and visitors alike.

Ten Pound Island Lighthouse: Dating back to 1821, this historic gem illuminates the pathways of Gloucester Harbor, guiding ships with its steadfast light. Restored to its former glory by the dedicated efforts of the Lighthouse Preservation Society, it stands

as a beacon of resilience and maritime heritage. Its presence graces the vistas of Gloucester's waterfront, a testament to the enduring spirit of the sea.

Eastern Point Lighthouse: Since 1832, this iconic landmark has welcomed ships into the bustling embrace of Gloucester Harbor. Once the residence of acclaimed artist Winslow Homer, it offers not only a guiding light but also a window into the rich tapestry of maritime history. While not open to visitors, its breathtaking views can be savored from the nearby Dog Bar Breakwater, inviting contemplation and awe.

Thacher Island Twin Lighthouses: With a legacy dating back to 1771, these twin lighthouses stand as guardians of the coast, offering dual lights that have guided countless mariners to safety. Maintained by the Thacher Island Association, they serve as a poignant memorial to those who have sailed the tempestuous seas. Discover the enduring charm of these historic beacons, standing tall against the ever-changing tides of time.
