Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial, also known as “The Man at the Wheel“ is the iconic statue that rests on a five-foot granite base located on the south side of Stacy Boulevard at the edge of Gloucester Harbor. This eight-foot-tall structure shows a fisherman dressed in oilskins standing clenched at the wheel on the leaning deck of his ship. Photographer, Ricardo Marnoto, originally from Aveiro, Portugal is a life-long resident of Gloucester. His passion and pursuit of learning photography started in high school. Ricardo’s photos incorporate the natural beauty around us with his own flair and spin. The featured cover photo of the infamous Man at the Wheel statue was taken at sunset and it’s entitled: “Facing the Light”. You can see more of Ricardo’s work at rmfotography.com or on FB@rmmfotos.

How did you come to be involved in Wicked Tuna? For me, Wicked Tuna started as a phone call from the production company saying they were possibly going to produce a show about tuna fishing. They were interested in interviewing me and came out on the boat to shoot some footage. With what they captured from us, along with a few other boats, they produced a pilot episode for networks to review. Once National Geographic picked up the pilot, the production company contacted the captains they felt best for the show and asked if we’d be interested in being part of the cast. And here we are, 10 seasons later, still going strong. Most reality shows fail early on, so for us to be here 10 years, 100+ episodes later, it’s very exciting to have been a part of it since the beginning. When did it hit you that Wicked Tuna had become a success? It was during the third season, that was when people really started recognizing me and the other captains in public. We weren’t faces in the crowd anymore, we were faces
from the TV show. After the first season we had a few fans here or there, but by season three there was a line of people when we’d come in from fishing, that’s when it really hit me that the show was becoming popular and drawing a big tourist crowd. Why do you think Wicked Tuna resonates so well with viewers? Most people who watch the show are landlocked and haven’t heard of a bluefin tuna, that a fish of this size and power even existed. That’s the feedback I get from fans. So to watch us catch these fish on a small rod and reel, people are just so impressed that we catch such big fish on small tackle and the money that can be made and lost over just one fish. You can hit the jackpot on that one great “catch”. Fans love the competition between the boats, they all have favorite boats like people have a favorite sports team. Do you think the show has changed people’s perception of the commercial fishing industry, or the fishing profession? If so, how?

It has made viewers more aware of what commercial fishing is and the hardships that go with it, the failures, the successes, the risks, the money that can be made and lost. People can put a face to the plate of seafood that they’re eating and have a sense of where that fish came from. What’s been the biggest surprise for you about being on the show? Never at any point in my life did I think that I’d come in from fishing and have people on the dock waiting to say hello or have someone approach me in a restroom asking to take a picture of me! The fame for catching a fish and being on TV—I never could have seen this coming. And the kids! Kids love the show, they approach me with a nervous energy…I feel like a superhero when I’m around children…and they always ask the coolest questions. You and first mate Sandro Maniaci have fished together since the beginning of the series. How has your relationship evolved over the years, and why do you think you two make such a good team?
Sandro has been with me for 13 years. In fact his first day of commercial fishing was with me. It’s been great watching him grow into his own and seeing first hand his progress over the years. I’m proud that he’s taken what he’s learned and applied it so well. Sandro has the passion, the drive, the integrity that it takes for this job. For me to let someone take my boat out without me takes trust—and over the years he’s earned that trust. You’ve been the top-earning boat on Wicked Tuna five times, more than any other captain. What’s the secret to your success? The other captains would say I’m a “lucky boat”, but I say you earn your luck, good or bad. Each year that we have won has been credited to our hard work, our knowledge, and our collaboration. We work together very well as a team and that wins big! Wicked Tuna airs Sundays at 9/8c on National Geographic, and stream past seasons on Disney+.

Site of the landing of the first settlers in 1623, Gloucester became the second permanent settlement of the early Puritans in the New World, preceded by Plymouth in 1620. Enjoy the park with over 25 acres of natural beauty, including two beaches, a dog park, many walking trails and spectacular views of the harbor and beyond. There is a parking fee during peak summer season. Kids will love the playground baseball fields and tennis courts The Welcoming Center is open to visitors (May-October) to assist with brochures, maps and guides. Stage Fort Park is part of the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway.

ANNE-MARIE ANDERSON
also known as the Gloucester Fisherman Memorial, presides over Stacy Boulevard at the edge of Gloucester Harbor. Sculpted by artist Leonard Craske and modeled after a local fisherman, the monument was completed in 1925 in honor of Gloucester’s 300th anniversary. It has become the symbol of the city and a place to remember the 10,000 men lost at sea during the city’s
long history. Their names are recorded on memorial plaques surrounding the structure.
Rocky Neck Art Colony
America’s oldest continually operating art colony (since 1850), Gloucester has played a vital role in America’s art history. Artists such as Fitz Henry Lane, Winslow Homer, John Sloan, Stuart Davis and Edward Hopper have all captured the light of Gloucester, as our many artists still do to this day. Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District is a compact, walkable area encompassing the peninsula of Rocky Neck situated within Gloucester’s working harbor.
Ravenswood Park
Explore a shrouded landscape of hemlock groves, a magnolia swamp, and other tree species where you’ll find remnants of Colonial habitation. Ravenswood Park offers 600 acres for solitude and quiet contemplation of nature. With 10 miles of carriage paths and trails that meander through the park, you can find plenty of room to picnic, bird watch, walk and simply appreciate the outdoors. You don’t want to miss trekking to the overlook to Gloucester Harbor or traversing the boardwalk through the Great Magnolia Swamp, home to native Sweetbay Magnolias.

The former home and laboratory of John Hays Hammond, Jr. Known as “The Father of Radio Control,” was one of America’s most prolific inventors and a protégé of Guglielmo Marconi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. Built from 1926 through 1929, and incorporated as a museum in 1930, the castle’s architectural style is mix of a medieval castle, medieval French village, and a Gothic cathedral. It was custom built to encompass Hammond’s private residence, laboratory, and museum quality collection of architectural elements from his travels throughout Europe.

LOUCESTER HAS ATTRACTED VISITORS FOR GENERATIONS. The beautiful harbor, cooling sea breezes, and amazing natural light are all magnets for boaters, vacationers, and artists who visit on a whim and return again and again. Henry Sleeper was an early-twentieth-century visitor from Boston who managed to stay a lifetime.
DiscoverGloucester.com
Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934) first visited Gloucester in 1906 at the invitation of a friend who had a waterfront home on Eastern Point. Within a year Sleeper began construction on his own summer home that he called Beauport. What began as a house to entertain friends and family soon became a showcase of Sleeper’s burgeoning interior design career, eventually expanding to more than forty rooms. Now considered one of America’s first professional interior decorators, Sleeper is known for his whimsical use of light, color, and architectural salvage. What makes Beauport remarkable is that Henry Sleeper’s interior furnishings, paint colors, and decorative art collections survived intact thanks to the preservation instincts of its second owner, the McCann family. A National Historic Landmark, the house remains an inspiration to anyone interested in interior design and architecture. Visitors who tour the house and restored Arts & Crafts style garden learn about Henry Sleeper, a gay man in the early twentieth century, his servants, Beauport’s fascinating neighbors and colorful guests and the McCann family who donated the house to become a museum. See for yourself why Henry Sleeper stayed a lifetime! historicnewengland.org.

UDDENLY ENJOYING RENEWED ENTHUSIASM around the world, sea shanties were sung aboard tall ships in the age of sail to coordinate the tedious tasks and alleviate the long hours of boredom. Many of these mainly manly song fragments have been collected and preserved from the journals of 19th-century whaling and merchant ships, and presented regularly at maritime museums, libraries, and Tall Ships events. Sea shanties, often spelled as “chanteys”, from the French verb chanter, meaning “to sing”, have “gone viral” in the age of COVID, perhaps for a similar cure for the feelings of isolation, and a longing for the return to normal life. In the old days the songs, ditties, and chants were used to coordinate the labor in hauling up the sails and anchor, as it was well known that “many hands make light work.” The call and response format of the work songs, thought to be derived in part from the work songs and so-called “field hollers” of African slaves, were accompanied by the pulling, hauling, and stomping used
to get the backbreaking work done. (Since the number of sails required far fewer hands, sea shanties were not used on the Gloucester fishing schooners.) Today, thanks to the internet, this old hairy-chested and anachronistic repertoire has cropped up everywhere, though their popularity has long been favored folkie fare in Gloucester. Never mind the “floating locker room” content—it’s all fair game! Yet, since the 1970’s, starting with a trio called The Starboard List, led by Peter Marston, shanty singing has been a part PHOTO COURTESY OF MARITIME GLOUCESTER

New England Clam Chowder Woodman’s Secret Recipe A sibling of stew, and long enjoyed in fishing villages throughout the world, chowder was certainly popular along our Northeastern coast before English settlers arrived and called it “New England”. However, the celebrated cream and potato-based version that has long been a credit to this region is believed to have originated in Newfoundland in the days when Breton fishermen combined portions of the day’s catch with ship’s biscuit, milk and whatever else was available. The name itself is probably derived from the French “Chaudière”, an archaic word for cauldron. 4 cups potatoes, peeled and diced ¼ cup onion, minced 4 cups minced clams, with their juice 2 cups milk or cream, depending on desired thickness Salt and pepper to taste Butter (optional) Put the potatoes and onions in a heavy-bottomed pot with just enough water to cover the top of the potatoes. Bring to a boil and then lower heat so liquid just simmers. Cook until the potatoes are tender, approximately 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the minced clams and bring to a second boil, stirring occasionally. Once it reaches a boil, turn off the heat, clams will be rubbery if over-cooked. Remove the pot from the heat at once and let it sit for 20 minutes or so. Heat cream in a second pot add to chowder and stir. Yields two+ quarts (8-10 servings, including dairy). Recipe Notes: Serve hot, adding a pat of butter to your cup if desired. Remaining chowder stock may be frozen before adding dairy. Woodmans.com

WINDHOVER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY
ON with the Show! Two nonprofit arts organizations steeped in the rich culture of Cape Ann, coming together, shining a light at the end of a dark tunnel.
F
ounded by modern dance icon Ina Hahn in 1968, Windhover opened as a performing arts camp. Ocean Alliance’s SnotBot program is helping transform whale science through powerful, inexpensive, and non-invasive research tools. SnotBot® is a drone which flies through the blow of a whale and collects exhaled “snot” on petri dishes. This blow contains priceless biological information: DNA, hormones, microbiomes and potentially many other indicators of the animal’s health and ecology. Best of all, this is a non-invasive tool that is safer for the animals and more efficient for researchers. Ocean Alliance has flown SnotBot over six species of whales in five countries. Did you know that Cape Ann is a bird watching paradise, especially in the off-season? Even the middle of winter is a wonderful time to catch sight of the wide variety of migrating waterfowl and coastline birds that visit our rugged shores each year. In addition to a variety of gulls, avid birders keep their eyes open for such species as Harlequin Duck, King Eider, Pacific Loon, Northern Gannet, Horned Grebe, Great Cormorant, Common Eider, Common and Red-throated Loons. As the seasons turn, as many as 27 species of shorebirds come through Cape Ann, either as their final destination or as a pit stop on their migratory paths north and then south again. Lighthouses of Cape Ann
JOHN ABISAMRA
SIX ICONIC LIGHTHOUSES stand tall along the Cape Ann coastline to protect seafarers from rocky shores and shoals. They offer historians and romantics alike a glimpse into Cape Ann’s maritime lore and legacy. Lighthouses are a comfort to mariners to this day, and despite the use of GPS and electronic aids for navigation, they still symbolize home and safety.
Annisquam Harbor Lighthouse (Annisquam Light) was erected in 1801 to mark the entrance to the Annisquam River at Wigwam Point, a popular Native American summer encampment. The quaint lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard and is no longer accessible from the nearby village of Annisquam in Gloucester. Best viewing opportunities are by water or from Wingaersheek Beach.
Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse (Straitsmouth Light) was built in 1835 to mark the entrance to nearby Rockport Harbor. The lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, but is owned by the Town of Rockport including the 1.8 acres it sits on. The rest of the 31-acre island is owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society as a bird sanctuary.
thacherisland.org
Ten Pound Island Lighthouse This quaint lighthouse is located on Ten Pound Island in Gloucester Harbor. The light was constructed in 1821 to mark the island and act as a marker for navigating Gloucester’s inner harbor. The island is easily visible from many locations along Gloucester’s waterfront. Tiny Ten Pound Island boasts housing America’s first Coast Guard station. The light was restored and relighted through the efforts of the Lighthouse Preservation Society.

Eastern Point Lighthouse Eastern Point Lighthouse was erected on Gloucester’s Eastern Point to mark the harbor entrance in 1832. In addition to the light, there is a large lighthouse station, which continues to serve as housing for the U.S. Coast Guard. One of the station’s more famous occupants was Winslow Homer. The noted artist spent a year living at the light in 1880. Although not open to visitors the lighthouse presents a wonderful view, especially from the vantage point of the adjacent Dog Bar Breakwater.
massaudubon.org
Thacher Island Twin Lighthouses The South tower has a red light flashing 5 times at 20 second intervals. The North tower has an amber steady light which is maintained by the Thacher Island Association as a “Courtesy” light in memory to mariners who have passed. Also known as Cape Ann Light Station, the Twin Lights are the only fully operational multiple lights on the coasts of the United States.

MARY AARONS
Our Neighbors on Cape Ann
Cape Ann is made up of four unique communities: Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Explore them all!
Essex
As the birthplace of the fried clam, thanks to the Woodman’s Family Restaurant, this picturesque community yields some of the finest seafood on Cape Ann. Whether you care for a cup of clam chowder or a plate full of steamed clams, you will not be disappointed. But the quiet town of just over 3,500 residents has much more to offer than great seafood. Antiquing, a premier Essex attraction for generations, remains a favorite pastime for the locals as well as visitors. Shipbuilding has been part of Essex’s heritage for more than 400 years, and draws people from far and wide to admire what it takes to build the beautiful watercraft, some still sailing Cape Ann harbors and waterways today. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one stop that is a must see to truly appreciate the incredible ship building heritage of this small community. Kayaking or taking a cruise down the Essex River will surely give you a unique view of the tidal salt marsh as you meander with the river outward Conomo Point and Ipswich Bay.
Manchester-By-The-Sea
Founded as Jeffrey’s Creek in the mid-1800s, this town is located at the southern end of Cape Ann. In 1989 the state legislature made the name official as a means to differentiate
36 DiscoverGloucester.com
the town from its larger neighbor to the North. A trip to Singing Beach, aptly named because of how the sand resonates when you walk on it, or Tuck’s Point is worth your time and then some. Beautiful retail shops, restaurants and galleries fill the town of just over 5,000 residents. The Manchester Historical Museum’s Trask House is a mustsee to get the complete story of this town known for its beautiful historic architecture.
Rockport
This picturesque seaside village, located at the most northeasterly part of Cape Ann, features beautiful beaches, historic lighthouses and galleries galore. Rockport’s downtown area is filled with quaint shops that include bookstores, candy-making, cafes and ice cream parlors as well as art galleries, specialty shops, jewelers and many places to dine. A leisurely stroll along the ever-changing Bearskin Neck will give visitors every imaginable opportunity to buy that perfect keepsake to remember and cherish their time on Cape Ann. Don’t miss outdoor dining in Dock Square, Motif #1, and the charming Inns of Rockport. Visit Halibut Point State Park or walk along Rockport’s scenic shores in the footsteps of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau and be as captivated as they were by Rockport’s unique charm.

Seafood Trail Welcome to America’s oldest fishing port. Here in Gloucester we’ve put our own perspective on sourcing local, natural, responsibly harvested, under-utilized species and in-season seafood cuisine. You are likely familiar with the phrase: ‘Ocean to Table’…we call our model “Bait to Plate.” There is nothing more delicious than seared tuna hooked the day before…a steamy bucket of clams harvested from the Essex River a few hours ago…or a lobster caught off Magnolia earlier in the day. To help you make your way around our nearly 400-year-old port of Gloucester from a culinary concept, we’ve assembled a collection of restaurants, tours, attractions, museums and activities where you can experience the working fishing industry then enjoy the spoils. There’s so much to discover here in Gloucester about our seafood and maritime industry. We expect you’ll learn something new, indulge in our fresh seafood delicacies, and have fun along the way! We have compiled a list of restaurants, markets, and attractions for you to experience. Custom design your own seafood trail by adding your personal favorites.
