THE MORTON ARBORETUM The Morton Arboretum is celebrating a century of commitment to the conservation of trees while continuing to provide guests with living collections of natural beauty throughout its centennial celebration. What began with Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company, and a simple motto “plant trees,” has grown into 1,700 acres of plant collections and gardens amid spectacular natural landscapes of woodlands, prairie, lakes and streams. The Arboretum features 222,000

plant specimens representing 4,650 different kinds of plants; an interactive, 4-acre children’s garden; the awe-inspiring outdoor exhibit: Human+Nature*; and the ever-popular holiday light show Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum. Learn, protect and celebrate natural beauty with each visit to The Morton Arboretum. After amassing a sizeable fortune thanks to the success of his salt company, Joy Morton wanted a respite from the hustle and bustle of Chicago. He found the location of his Thornhill Estate west of Chicago in Lisle, Illinois in 1909 and by the 14th of December 1922, the estate was transformed into The Morton Arboretum. 100 years later, after over 1,000 acres of growth, and having served millions of guests over the years, it’s safe to say that Joy Morton’s vision of a sanctuary for trees was realized. To commemorate its centennial year, The Arboretum will add three new sculptures to the Human+Nature exhibit, including one made especially for the arboretum’s centennial celebration. There will also be a beautiful Grand Garden planted during the arboretum’s 100th year that guests can visit, starting in late September 2022 that will feature the exquisite Centennial Fountain. Visit The Morton Arboretum and join in their year of celebration.
