Learn the history of
Denison, Texas 1872 Denison was founded as a railroad town and named after Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Vice President George Denison. By 1873, it became home to the first north-south rail connection west of the Mississippi River, linking Texas to major cities across the nation. 1888 Thomas Volney Munson (1843-1913) was a Denison businessman and horticulturalist. Munson helped save France’s vineyards during a devastating grape disease outbreak. In recognition of his contributions, he received France’s prestigious Chevalier du Mérite Agricole. 1890 Future U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Denison on October 14, 1890. He later served as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in World War II and became the 34th President of the United States. 1936-1943 Construction of the Denison Dam began to control flooding of the Red River and create hydroelectric power for the region.. Completed in 1943, the project created Lake Texoma, which remains one of the region’s most popular recreational destinations. 1946 General Eisenhower returned to Denison and was honored with a citywide parade. Today, visitors can follow the historic parade route along the Ike Hike, a self-guided trail celebrating his connection to the city. 2022 Denison celebrated its 150th anniversary with a year-long series of community events, festivals, and celebrations. The sesquicentennial concluded with the burial of a time capsule in Katy Plaza, to be opened during the city’s 200th anniversary.
