Time to

Temperatures are falling, the days grow shorter, perhaps a flurry or two of snow is in our near future, and so our thoughts turn to friends, family, and great food as we prepare for the holidays. It’s a busy time of year, to be sure, but also a time to reflect on all that we are grateful for—and Concord and our many friends here are at the tops of our list, for sure. As you stroll through Concord Center, West Concord Junction, and Thoreau Depot, you will undoubtedly notice the charm, character, and friendly vibe of our many shops and restaurants. This time of year is fun, festive, and filled with holiday magic. That makes shopping locally a true pleasure. We hope this Guide to Holiday Gift Giving will inspire you to start your holiday shopping right at home. Supporting our local shopkeepers, restauranteurs, artisans, and other small businesses ensures a dynamic and fun place to gather for years to come. Concord is buzzing this winter, and the fun is calling! Turn to p. 14 for “Holiday Celebrations Around Town.” The festivities start in November (no, it’s definitely not too early to start your holiday shopping), and the coming months will include events sure to get you in the holiday mood. Enjoy the beautiful shop window decorations, the warm and hearty dishes being served up in local restaurants, the enticing holiday strolls, parades, and both a menorah lighting and a tree lighting ceremony. It’s a giving time of year – and this also includes giving back to the non-profit organizations that preserve our historic and cultural heritage, educate adults and children, support mental health, feed hungry families, and do so many other good works. Your donation supports them as they plan another year of making Concord a great place to live and visit. Turn to p. 58 for our “Guide to Charitable Giving” as you consider your annual donations. For those who love the brisk days of winter, as did Henry David Thoreau, we have some suggestions on

If keeping warm and cozy is more your style, turn to p. 40 and find more than a dozen indoor ideas, from art exhibitions to concerts, live theater, and more. We look forward to seeing you around town this holiday season. And most of all, we would like to take a moment to truly thank you, our readers, as well as the amazing authors, historians, artists, photographers, advertisers, sponsors, and so many others who make each issue of Discover Concord special. We wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season. Cheers!

Grateful

I truly wish I did this as a daily practice. It is important. I am grateful for so much in my life. I am grateful for my children and the impact they continue to have on me. Specifically, I am grateful for the way they challenge me to see them more deeply. I am grateful for my health, for this aging body of mine, and for the fact that it still allows me to move swiftly through this world. I am grateful that I was afforded the opportunity to find a career I am passionate about. I am grateful that I get to help people, at different stages of their lives, move on. I am grateful that I was afforded a skillset that makes a tangible difference for those I represent. I am grateful for the community that I live in and for the people I have gotten to know here over the years. I am grateful that I have a shipmate who rows with me when all hands on deck are required. I am grateful that my life has not been easy because it made me who I am today. I am grateful that my life experiences have made me thoughtful about justice and all that comes with it.

Happy Holidays From Our Family to Yours

I am grateful for my heritage and for the people that came before me. I am grateful that I was raised in the United States. I am just grateful.

Holiday Recipe Traditions

Sharing meals with family and friends is one of the true joys of the holiday season. We all have our favorite dishes, from Grandma’s secret recipe for the perfect turkey stuffing to Uncle David’s apple pie. This year, our friends at two of Concord’s most beloved places, Debra’s Natural Gourmet and Verrill Farm, are sharing recipes that are sure to become perennial favorites. © Verrill Farm

Verrill Farm Butternut Squash Lasagna Makes 8 to 10 servings

6 pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed 2 cups onions, sliced 4 cups mushrooms, sliced

season with ½ teaspoon kosher salt, and ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper. In a separate bowl, mix ricotta cheese, ½ cup Parmesan cheese, and the eggs.

½ cup olive oil, divided ¼ teaspoon dried thyme

In a shallow pan, heat ¼ cup olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions, begin to brown (approximately 5 minutes). Add mushrooms and cook an additional 5 minutes.

1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 2 pounds ricotta cheese 2 large eggs

Add mushrooms and onions to the ricotta cheese mixture and mix to combine.

¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 1 9-ounce package no-boil pasta sheets 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped Preheat oven to 350 F and set aside a 9x13” pan. Toss half the butternut squash in a bowl with ¼ cup olive oil, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon thyme, and ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper. Place on a baking sheet and roast until tender and edges brown, about 30 minutes. Place the remaining half of butternut squash in a pot, cover with water and boil until fork tender. Drain, puree or mash until smooth and

Spread 1 ½ cups of butternut puree in the bottom of the pan. Cover with 3 pasta sheets, followed by 1/3 of the ricotta mushroom mixture, then 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Top with 3 pasta sheets, 1 ½ cups puree, 1/3 ricotta mushroom filling then 1 cup shredded mozzarella. For the final layer, place four sheets of pasta, remaining puree, remaining ricotta mushroom mixture and 1 cup shredded mozzarella. Sprinkle with diced roasted butternut, chopped sage, and remaining grated Parmesan. Bake lasagna for 35-40 minutes on middle oven rack until the dish reaches an internal temperature of 140 F and cheese is golden. Visit Verrillfarm.com for more recipes.

Black Cherry Freezer Tart with a Hazelnut-Chocolate Crust Makes one 14-inch round tart or two 10-inch tarts CRUST 2 cups of hazelnut meal ½ cup raw nut butter (I use Brazil Nut butter) ½ cup maple syrup ¾ cup raw cacao powder A generous pinch of salt

FILLING 10 ounces of pitted cherries (frozen is fine) ¾ cup coconut manna ½ cup orange marmalade ½ Tbsp vanilla extract Optional: pomegranate molasses

© Debra’s Natural Gourmet

Line your tart dish(es) with parchment paper to help remove the tart intact. In a bowl, combine crust ingredients with your hands. Using your fingers and palms, press crust into your tart dish making the outer ridges about a quarter-inch high. Puree the filling. The filling is thick, so you want a strong blender, and you want your ingredients close to room temp, so they don’t thicken up too much. If you want more tartness and oomph, add pomegranate molasses to taste. Spread filling into the crust with a spatula. Freeze. Serve frozen, or very slightly thawed. If desired, garnish with thinly sliced stone fruit, crystallized ginger, chopped nuts, cacao nibs, or edible flowers. Visit Debrasnaturalgourmet.com for more recipes. 36

GO TAKE A HIKE! Concord is surrounded by nature, and winter is a beautiful time to explore. Your senses are in for a treat with a walk (or snowshoe excursion) in the woods, along the Battle Road, or following the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. Stop and listen to the orchestra of winter birds. Look carefully at the fallen snow, and you may see deer tracks or other signs of local wildlife in the area. Freshly fallen snow reflects the light and can cheer a winter day. A moonlight stroll is magical with sparkling snow under moonlight. And the haunting call of owls stirs a sense of magic and mystery. On a clear night, the stars are crisp and bright – you might even see a shooting star! Looking for a great place to get started? Scan the QR Code to access our trail guide from the Discover Concord Guide to the Great Outdoors. With eight trails to choose from, the call of the wild is promising adventure!

If you prefer to venture out on your own, there is so much to see and explore. Stroll the grounds of Minute Man National Historical Park, Walden Pond State Reservation, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Old Hill Burying Ground, or South Burying Ground and learn about the early chapters of Concord. All are open until sunset and are lovely on a winter’s day. See the map of Historic Concord on p. 32. WINTER FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY From snowshoeing to cross country skiing, ice skating, and, of course, the classic sledding, families have fun all winter long in the many outdoor spaces in and around Concord. The trail list at the QR code to the left provides great spots for snowshoeing and

cross-country skiing. Ice skating favorites include Walden Pond, Macones Pond (Lowell Road, near Barnes Hill Road), and Kennedys Pond (off Old Mill Road in the Old Rifle Range). Safety is important when skating, so please remember to never skate alone – and always be sure that the ice layer is at least 6” thick before lacing up those skates. Sledding is good fun for all ages. The hill at Concord-Carlisle High School has easy access and good parking. Those seeking the thrill of a steep incline should head to Punkatasset Hill off Monument Street or to the big hill on Nawshawtuc Road, near Willard Common. There’s so much to do in Concord this winter – so get out there and have fun! Don’t forget your mittens…

Barrow Bookstore Presents:

Trivia

The world runs on gossip, and you love it. After all, you live in Concord in the year 1773, and winter days on the farm can be tedious. Gathering with your friends helps break up the hardships. Near the end of December, you hear from a nearby farmer’s wife that, on December 17th, a man from Boston suddenly showed up in Concord looking to relocate. You don’t have proof, and you’re certainly not one to point fingers, but you suspect this man was involved in some illicit behavior. What could it be? (Guess away - we promise we won’t tell anyone that we heard it from you.)

2

True or False: Despite neighborhood gossip and suspicions, the suddenlyarrived man from Boston in the above question is, by law, “presumed innocent until proven guilty in a Court of Law.”

3

In his journal, Massachusetts lawyer John Adams (later President Adams) called this event “The most magnificent Movement of all.” Was he referring to: A. His wedding to Abigail Adams B. The concluding Christmas Eve carols in Boston’s King’s Chapel C. New Year’s Eve fireworks over Boston harbor D. The Boston Tea Party

4

Related on her mother’s side of the family, Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was John Adams’ (1735-1826) fourth cousin twice removed. (Written another way - John Adams’ 3rd great-grandfather was Louisa’s 5th great-grandfather). On Christmas Eve of 1854, twenty-two-year-old Louisa placed what she called her “first born” into her mother’s Christmas stocking as a gift. What was this “first born” and what was it called?

5

In the opening line of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 book Little Women, Jo March grumbles, “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any….” what? 52

A. Snow B. Firewood C. Visitors D. Presents

6

In Little Women, what did the March sisters do with their Christmas morning breakfast? A. Overcooked it B. Gave it away to a family in need C. Prepared it for their mother D. Invited Laurie and Mr. Laurence to join them

Gilbert Stuart, John Adams c. 1800-1815

7

Which Louisa May Alcott story opens with the following line: “I’m so tired of Christmas I wish there never would be another one!” exclaimed a discontented-looking little girl, as she sat idly watching her mother arrange a pile of gifts two days before they were to be given.” (And for bonus points, about which prior book does this remind you?) A. Revival of Holiday Spirits B. A Christmas Dream and How it Came to be True C. Christmas at Plumfielde D. Little Women Part Second E. Edna Steals Christmas

8

In his 1854 book Walden, what did Henry David Thoreau say was “the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations?” A. Books B. Food C. Water D. Wilderness

9

If you wanted to share a holiday drink with friends in Concord, in which of the following year(s) would you be able to do so? A. 1618 B. 1718 C. 1818 D. 1918

Which famous Concord resident said the following about gifts: “Next to things of necessity, the rule for a gift, which one of my friends prescribed, is that we might convey to some person that which properly belonged to his character, and was easily associated with him in thought…. The only gift is a portion of thyself. Thou must bleed for me. Therefore, the poet brings his poem; the shepherd, his lamb; the farmer, corn; the miner, a gem; the sailor, coral and shells; the painter, his picture; the girl, a handkerchief of her own sewing. This is right and pleasing, for it restores society in so far to the primary basis, when a man’s biography is conveyed in his gift, and every man’s wealth is an index of his merit.”

The Fifth Amendment (1791) and the Fourteenth Amendment (1868) guaranteed due process of law and the right to a fair trial. In his December 17, 1773, journal entry, Adams wrote, “Last Night 3 Cargoes of Bohea Tea were emptied into the Sea. This Morning a Man of War sails. This is the most magnificent Movement of all. There is a Dignity, a Majesty, a Sublimity, in this last Effort of the Patriots, that I greatly admire. 1. He may have been involved in the Boston Tea Party. As English subjects, American colonists were expected to follow English laws and pay taxes imposed by the King and Parliament. Boston lawyer James Otis summed up the colonists’ discontent writing that “no part of His Majesty’s dominions [should] be taxed without their consent,” i.e., “no taxation without representation.” The Tea Act passed by Parliament in May 1773, steeped many colonist objections to a boiling point, and on the night of December 16, 1773, led by the Sons of Liberty, colonists dressed in disguises headed to Boston Harbor where they boarded three ships loaded with tea owned by the English East India Company. They dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. Fearing repercussions, some participants immediately fled Boston and relocated elsewhere.
