uducherry, (formerly known as Pondicherry) is a city in South India that showcases beautifully both the Tamil culture and the remnants of a French colonial era. From the distinct rocky beaches to the grey and yellow architecture to its quaint cafes, Puducherry is indeed a tourist’s paradise.

Aurobindo Ashram The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual sojourn located in the heart of Puducherry. The ashram is believed to have blossomed out of a small community of disciples that Sri Aurobindo had after he retired. On 24 November 1926, Sri Aurobindo withdrew completely from public life to focus on his inner self. It was then that he handed over the full responsibility of the ashram to his spiritual collaborator Mirra Alfassa popularly known as “The Mother”. As for the Ashram, Sri Aurobindo himself noted, “less been created than grown around him as its centre.”

Scuba Diving For the adventurous in you, the scuba diving experience in Puducherry is a musttry. In the last decade, the picturesque east coast of Pondicherry has gained immense popularity for its underwater experiences. It definitely is a ‘once in a lifetime experience’.

Arikamedu Arikamedu, a coastal fishing village ( nearly 4 kilometres from Puducherry), was originally a French colonial town. Archaeological excavations were done there in 1947–1950. The explorations led to the findings of several artifacts including Arretine ware, Roman lamps, glassware, glass and stone beads, and gems at the site. Based on these excavations, it was concluded that Arikamedu was a trading post that had trading connections with Rome and had flourished for about two hundred years—from the late first century BCE to the first and second centuries CE. Chunnambar boat house The Chunnambar boat house is a perfect escapade from our city life. Whether you love adventurous water sports or want to opt for a romantic date on one of their rental accommodations or just want to opt for a family ride along the backwaters, the Chunnambar boathouse has something for everyone. Positioned between the junction of the Chunnambar River and the Bay of Bengal, the backwaters are a sight to behold.

Conserving nature through adventure

“Let’s save the environment and not use plastics,” says an 8-year-old, Tharagai Aarathana. The father-daughter team is recognised for their concern and efforts to save the marine world. Aravind Tharunsri, South India’s first scuba diving instructor, has not only taught the skill but has also spread awareness and educated thousands of people on protecting the marine environment. “I’ve been scuba diving for more than 20 years, and I wanted my daughter to become familiar with the ocean and the marine ecosystem as soon as possible. Children should start learning to swim at a young age, in my opinion, says Aravind.

The father-daughter team has also been working to raise awareness of marine pollution while cleaning up the ocean and beaches.

Tharagai herself is well versed in scuba diving. She is getting her education through homeschool. She uses her skills to clean the ocean. She credits her father, scuba diving expert and instructor Aravind Tharunsri, who has encouraged her to discover the wonders of the ocean’s depths since she was very young, for igniting this interest. The fatherdaughter duo have collected more than 600 kg of plastic from the ocean. This young girl is indeed a huge inspiration for all of us.

Aravind, a marine conservationist, has been encouraging his daughter to participate in his activities and believes that it is crucial to instil these values in children at a young age because they stand in for the next generation.

Thaaragai claims that she enjoys spending time cleaning up the ocean and beaches.

“My father used to take me along when he was doing beach clean-ups and he used to explain to me how the ocean and beaches were becoming polluted and how it affected marine life. I therefore felt like assisting my father in gathering plastic waste from both the beaches and the ocean, says Thaaragai.

ethereal Botanical Garden (or Jardin Botanique) has close to 1500 plant varieties, divided into 30 sections across the garden. The fossil plants are unique to Pondicherry Botanical Garden. Hosting hundreds of endangered native species, the Botanical Garden of Pondicherry is a paradise for nature lovers.

Light house Pondicherry Lighthouse serves the practical purpose of guiding passing ships in the night. But it also happens to be a popular spot that gives an eagle view of Pondicherry. It also happens to be a great spot to catch sunsets. The city is home to two lighthouses. The old lighthouse in Pondicherry was built in 1836 and was active till the new lighthouse structure was setup in 1971. While the older version has been converted into a museum, the current lighthouse doubles up as a viewpoint for tourists.

Sri Manakula vinayagar The 500-year-old Manakula Vinayagar Temple is one of the famous Dravidianstyled ancient temples in the city dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Standing near Promenade Beach in Pondicherry, The Manakula Vinayagar Temple gets its name from Manal meaning sand and Kulam meaning pond. The temple elephant is another huge attraction of this divine destination.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral One can hardly miss the pristine Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Mission street in the heart of Puducherry. The 300-year-old church stands tall sporting a beautiful white and blue color scheme with golden accents coupled with a mix of rian, French, and Portuguese style architecture. The first Church was built in 1689 and has since been destroyed thrice. The current structure has a gorgeous central aisle complete with golden pillars and blue-tinted ceilings reflecting the life history of Jesus Christ.

Meeran mosque The Meerapalli mosque is one of the most revered pilgrimage spots for Muslims. The 350-year-old mosque is the second oldest mosque in Puducherry. The Acrot Nawab built this sacred structure in the 18th century. Showcasing the Gothic Islamic style of architecture, its serene style brings peace to any visitor. Right by the Meerapalli mosque is the grave of its founder Meeran. The original mosque has withstood the test of time and stands tall despite the natural ravages it has faced.

CHOPSTIX their specialty restaurant for Pan-Asian cuisine is a must-try for family dinners. They also have exciting food stations for street food, international grill and tandoor. Kanjeevaram silk sarees can be traced back to

Hindu mythology. These Silk Weavers are saïd to be descendants of Sage Markanda who is believed to have woven garments for the Gods themselves. This stunning weave originates from the small Tamil Nadu town of Kanchipuram.

The two main weaving tribes, the Devangas and the Saligars, are believed to have relocated from Andhra Pradesh and established themselves in the village of Kanchipuram. | July 2022 | Discover Chennai 35

Using their weaving skills, they began creating beautiful designs of the images they saw on the temples surrounding the villages on the mesmerising Kanjeevaram silk sarees. Soon after, this lovely fabric gained fame and has become synonymous with silk saree.

The pallu and the borders of Kanjeevaram silk sarees are woven separately before coming together, which is one of their most unique characteristics. The pitni is another name for the zigzag pattern that connects the two pieces. The Kanjeevaram saree’s

pallu typically has a very different pattern and colour from the body. The saree is more durable because it is made of three silk threads twisted with silver wire. A Kanjeevaram saree typically weighs between 750 grams to a maximum of two kilograms.

trasting borders woven using the korvai technique. The korvai sarees required 2 people sitting at the loom and a smaller person- usually a child - helped connect the main saree and the contrasting border. Three decades back, the Indian government passed an order against child labour which almost led to the disappearance of this technique. But fortunately, the weavers are now reviving this technique without enlisting children in the weaving process.

Apart from Kanjeevaram saris, Rasipuram silk, Madurai cotton, and Chettinadu are also popular amongst saris sold in this state.

How to keep your silk saris safe?

• If the border and the sari are in différent colours, you have to tie up the border and wash it separately or better yet use dry cleaning for your silk saris.

• You should open up your old saris once in a while and refold it in a different way. And never place too much weight atop a silk sari to prévent tearing along the folds.

• When you iron the sari, using a white cloth over the sari will help you protect the zari.

• Always have a small fall at the bottom of the sari to prevent any wear and tear.
