Beautify Chennai Goethe-InstitutjMax Mueller Bhavan and Chennai City Connect, along with other partners, are organizing the first edition of Conquer the Concrete - Chennai Street Art Festival Oanuary 20 - February 7, 2015). Artists, students of fine arts and graphic designers from all walks of life, have been invited to send in entries and paint selected public spaces.
The event, curated by Georg Zolchow, will also feature international artists from Germany, USA and India. We were especially glad to hear that one of the aims has a close Chennai connect - to encourage the dying art of painting huge and imaginative film posters, every time a film was released in Chennai. Did you know that the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore is one of the few structures in Chennai that date back to the eighth century? In his book 'Madras Rediscovered' the historian, S.Muthiah notes that the Mylapore temple was on the shores in the 15th century and part of the great port of the Pallava Kings who bore the title Mylai Kavalar (protectors of Mylapore). In the 194Os, the Kapaleeswarar temple gopuram was a beautiful tank full of water in the forefront and lined on all four sides by the mada veedhis. The tank was built on land donated by the Nawab of Carnatic and, it is said that till today, Muslims are allowed the use of the tank on Muharram. Venketesh Ramakrishnan has embarked on a project to bring the river back into focus. He stated that three temples on its shores have been sung about in the Thevaram (700-800 AD). The Cooum also holds an important place in history. Tipu Sultan's sons were held hostages by the East India Company by the side of the Coourn, while the Carnatic nawabs' first palace in Chennai, and the first British fort, were built on its banks. Centurion Building Last month saw Ripon Building, the landmark administrative headquarters of the Corporation, completing 101 years. Although designed by British architects, the execution process was in the hands of three Indians, T Namberumal Chetty, Nemali Pattabhirama Rao and P Loganatha Mudaliar. Said to be the second oldest Corporation building in the world, Ripon Building was named after Lord Ripon, a Viceroy of India, who felt that Indians needed to playa greater role in local governance.
Lord Ripon's statue, in the compound, has an interesting history. Sculpted by Francis Derwent Wood, it was installed on Mount Road in 1918, fronting the offices of The Hindu at the intersection of Wallajah and Ellis Roads. In 1940, following war-time scares and at the insistence of then Mayor S Satyamurti, it was shifted to the Ripon Buildings compound.
