THE NOSTALGIC WAY TO TRAVEL NORTHUMBERLAND FERRIES: WHERE YOUR JOURNEY BEGINS
Some journeys simply get you there. Others become part of the story. For 85 years, the ferry crossing between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia has done exactly that: carrying passengers across the Northumberland Strait and memories shaped by decades of travel. Since 1941, Northumberland Ferries has been woven into family traditions, summer rituals and first-time adventures. What began as a vital transportation link has grown into a shared experience families return to year after year. Today, the 75-minute crossing invites travellers to slow down and ease into Maritime culture. From the moment the journey begins (even before boarding), passengers are in capable hands with a dedicated and experienced crew who ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience. Aboard both MV Confederation and MV Northumberland, dining, entertainment and comfort come together in a way that encourages travellers to settle in rather than rush. Our Music on Deck program brings regional musicians on board and into ferry terminals to transform the crossing into something communal and celebratory. Equally distinctive is the Seaside Experiences program, featuring local food, art and handcrafted products. Both vessels feature a designated Pet Friendly Lounge, ensuring four-legged family members are just as welcome to be part of the journey. Salt Water Café serves a full daily menu, making it easy to incorporate a meal into your crossing. MV Confederation is home to Salt Water Scoops, offering ice cream, branded keepsakes and merchandise. What truly sets the ferry experience apart, however, is its sense of generational pride. In an era when travel can feel increasingly transactional, Northumberland Ferries remains deeply nostalgic. Families return decade after decade, often retracing the same route taken by parents, grandparents and even greatgrandparents before them. The journey to PEI begins aboard Northumberland Ferries. ferries.ca

A RENEWED VISION
An Honest and Reflective Look at Charlottetown’s History At first glance, modern day Charlottetown is easy to fall for: colourful heritage buildings, inviting shops and restaurants, and sweeping harbour views. But beneath that charm lies a much more complex story. The city’s past includes difficult truths, and reminders of colonization are woven into the landscape itself. In recent years, there has been meaningful (un)learning and reflection as the community continues to unpack and better understand its collective history.
A Brief History
THE MI'KMAQ HERITAGE ACTORS
Charlottetown’s identity extends far beyond its long-held title as the Birthplace of Confederation when the leaders of the provinces met to discuss the formation of Canada. While the events of 1864 remain a significant chapter, the history of this place is far deeper, fuller, and more nuanced. Visitors are encouraged to explore multiple perspectives, including the injustices that shaped the city and the voices that were absent from those early political conversations, most notably the Mi'kmaw people. For more than 12,000 years, the Mi'kmaq have been the original inhabitants of Prince Edward Island, which they called Epekwitk and means “lying in the water.” The history of Epekwitk includes profound loss and displacement, marked by the occupation of Mi'kmaw lands. It also encompasses the largest Acadian Expulsion, which took place across Charlottetown Harbour at Skmaqn–Portla-Joye–Fort Amherst, along with the presence of slavery, systemic racism, and deep rooted inequities upheld by those in power.
Charlottetown as it is known today can be traced back to a French military settlement established in 1720. From there, waves of newcomers – including Acadians, British settlers, and people from many parts of the world – shaped the city’s evolving culture, architecture, and community. This history, while marked by hardship, also includes resilience and resistance. Advocates for justice have worked, and continue to work, to ensure the voices of the Mi'kmaq, Black communities, women, and other marginalized groups are heard. Charlottetown still has important work ahead, but today the city is more openly acknowledging its past and taking steps toward reconciliation, with the goal of building a place where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected.

SLAYMAKER & NICHOLS GASTRO HOUSE
BY CHEF ILONA DANIEL When chefs are eating out, we tend to go where we can enjoy quality – bells and whistles are not always necessary. We’re ever on the lookout for originality, passion, authenticity, and technique as much as flavour. And we respect and stay loyal to places that stay true to the food they serve. For me, I often seek out smaller, locally-owned restaurants who prepare their dishes with the kind of care you can actually taste! SLAYMAKER & NICHOLS: It’s one of those places I return to when I want to be reminded why local, independentlyowned restaurants matter. I love the way the room hums with inspired conversations, clinking glassware, the percussive shake of cocktails being made, cutlery clicks, and the quiet choreography of a team that knows exactly what it’s doing. The food feels deeply considered – it’s seasonal and beautifully balanced, with flavours that unfold rather than shout. There’s respect for ingredients here, but also a sense of play that consistently tempts and tantalizes. I always leave feeling nourished in the truest sense, not just fed. It’s a restaurant that trusts its guests and celebrates craft.
BOMBAY CUISINE: More than butter chicken, Bombay Cuisine has a bountiful menu filled with lots of sharable plates, iconic curries, biryanis, and a vast array of vegetarian dishes that makes this meal not only flavourful, but also inclusive. My latest constant cravings on the menu are the manchurian cauliflower and jeera rice. The butter naan is a must. Chef Ilona Daniel is a food photographer, food writer, hospitality consultant, speaker, educator, and media maven. Chef Ilona is the co-host of the TV cooking show, “Get in the Kitchen”, and has appeared on Bravo TV, VICE TV, APTN, CTV Atlantic, CTV Toronto, as well as Breakfast Television.
HARU K-BBQ: Family-run restaurants are absolute treasures in my mind, and Haru K is certainly no exception. There are many traditional Korean dishes to choose from like bibimbap, Korean fried chicken, mandu, corn cheese, and my fav, japchae. Japchae is made with sweet potato noodles, beef, and vegetables. I really could eat those noodles every day! AZTECA: Authentic Mexican food in the heart of Downtown Charlottetown. A vibrant, cozy restaurant serving up hearty servings of the classics – think enchiladas, guacamole, carnitas, tacos al pastor, and chilaquiles. If you ask if they have enmoladas available and they do, immediately order it! Enmoladas are enchiladas with a mole sauce, and they are stuffed with chicken. The mole is so deeply savoury with a singular blend of spices, chilies, and chocolate. AZTECA

THE GALLERY COFFEE HOUSE & BISTRO
FAVOURITE COFFEE SHOPS BY MEGHAN MARTELL THE GALLERY - COFFEE HOUSE & BISTRO First on the list would have to be the Gallery – a welcoming spot to enjoy coffee surrounded by local artwork. You can browse through their long list of flavour shots (pistachio is my favourite) and settle in with a drink and a sweet treat. THE KETTLE BLACK The moment you walk into the Kettle Black, you’re met with such a relaxing and cozy atmosphere. Their drinks are amazing, and I always have a bag of their coffee at home – their light roast is one of my favourites! RECEIVER COFFEE CO. I love all of the Receiver locations, but my favourite would have to be the Brass Shop. The staff are so nice, and the coffee & food are always good (the iced Americano & the breakfast sandwich have never done me wrong). It’s a nice place to check out solo or catch up with friends. TIMOTHY'S WORLD COFFEE Timothy’s is one of my favourites to go with friends, especially since they have a cozy area in the back to sip on your tea or coffee, and catch up.

SPOTLIGHT ON:
VERENA VARGA & AMY SMITH
A Taste of PEI, Straight from the Farm For a truly local taste of Prince Edward Island, Farmacy & Fermentary captures the spirit of the Island’s soil and seasons. Founded by farmers Verena Varga and Amy Smith, this farmto-table vegetarian café is grounded in PEI’s agricultural traditions and a deep respect for the land. Verena’s connection to the Island began in childhood, but it was a visit together in 2009 that convinced the couple to make PEI home. In 2010, they launched Heart Beet Organics, growing vegetables free of pesticides and chemicals while focusing on healthy, living soil. Their philosophy is simple: care for the land, water, and air – and leave it better than they found it. Over time, they shared their harvest through farmers’ markets and a CSA program, helping customers discover new vegetables and creative ways to cook them. As their farm flourished, so did the vision of a café that would showcase their produce more fully. In 2019, they opened Farmacy & Fermentary – PEI’s first true farm-to-table vegetarian café – guided by the motto, “Let Food Be Thy Medicine.”
FOOD AS MEDICINE The name reflects their belief that fresh, thoughtfully prepared food can nourish from the inside out. In addition to vibrant café dishes, Farmacy produces fermented foods including sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, and kombucha – all crafted with local, organically grown ingredients. Rich in probiotics, these foods support digestion and overall well being. A small on-site market features seasonal vegetables, frozen Island fruits, eggs, maple syrup, raw honey, mushrooms, and herbal teas and tinctures made from farm-grown medicinal plants.
FARMACY & FERMENTARY
VERENA VARGA & AMY SMITH
A MENU THAT FOLLOWS THE SEASONS The café’s menu changes with the harvest, celebrating PEI’s freshest ingredients. Signature kombucha flavours highlight Island-grown fruits, herbs, and flowers such as Elderberry, Blueberry Lavender, and Strawberry Jalapeño. A standout favourite is the Protein Bowl: housemade tempeh, veggie pâté, roasted tofu, organic black beans, (a very addictive) Dragon Sauce, and a scoop of fermented vegetables. It’s a colourful, nutrient-packed plate that perfectly reflects the café’s ethos.
OUR GOAL IS TO LEAVE THE LAND BETTER THAN WE FOUND IT. TRANSPARENCY AT THE TABLE What truly sets Farmacy apart is transparency. As a farmer-owned café, if they didn’t grow it themselves, they know exactly who did. Every ingredient – from oils and flours to sauces and seasonings – is sourced with care and integrity. More than a meal, a visit to Farmacy & Fermentary is an experience rooted in intention and flavour. With the menu evolving alongside the seasons, there’s every reason to return. 152 A Great George Street @farmacyandfermentary

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
The ULTIMATE Golf Destination
GLASGOW HILLS
So many Island courses, so close together. Prince Edward Island is home to golf courses that wow, challenge, and surprise, each shaped by its landscape and sense of place. What makes the Island truly special isn’t just the quality of the golf, it’s the variety, and how close it all is. In a single trip, you can play dramatically different courses without ever feeling rushed or confined to one resort or property. Tee off seaside at The Links at Crowbush Cove, where rolling dunes and ocean views define one of Canada’s most recognizable championship layouts. Head west to Mill River Golf Course for a tranquil, tree-lined round that feels worlds away. Discover classic parkland golf at Dundarave Golf Course, or take on the bold, modern design of Glasgow Hills Resort & Golf Club, with wide fairways and elevated coastal views. Then there’s Belfast Highland Greens. Community-owned and proudly local, it offers a raw, windswept playing experience set above PEI’s iconic red cliffs. Many golfers compare it to links style courses in Scotland, just slightly less polished, more characterdriven, and deeply rooted in its coastal setting. What ties all of this together is proximity. Every course on the Island is within an easy drive of Charlottetown, making PEI one of the most convenient golf destinations in the country.

That accessibility was on full display during the 2025 Golf PEI Marathon, when golfers Sam MacPhail and Ben King played one hole at each of the Island’s 18 courses in a single day. Nancy and Kevin Becerril
A Taste of Mexico City in Charlottetown Founded by Mexico City natives Nancy and Kevin Becerril, Tekila Mexican Bar & Grill was created to share the true spirit of Mexican cuisine – authentic, vibrant, and rooted in tradition. Located at 165 Prince Street and more than a restaurant, it’s an open invitation into Mexican culture, shaped by family, creativity, and a love of food. “As a family, we’ve built Tekila together from the ground up,” Nancy says. “Our daughter, Fernanda, is truly the soul of the space.” An artist, Fernanda has shaped the restaurant’s entire look and feel, from its bold colours and murals to the smallest design details, creating a warm, expressive atmosphere that reflects her heritage. In the kitchen, authenticity guides every dish. Inspired by the flavours of Mexico City, the menu is built around handmade tortillas and fresh, house-made salsas, all prepared from scratch using simple ingredients and time-honoured techniques. In Mexico, food is more than nourishment – it’s family, celebration, and history all at once – and that spirit carries through every plate at Tekila. Fernanda’s creativity also extends behind the bar, where she designs the cocktail and beverage program. Each
drink blends flavour, artistry, and storytelling, reflecting her personal connection to Mexican culture. For the Becerril family, Tekila is more than a place to eat. It’s a cultural bridge where locals and visitors can experience something genuine. Guests are invited to savour not just the flavours, but the warmth, energy, and care behind every detail – leaving with the feeling that they’ve experienced a small piece of Mexico, right in Charlottetown. Nancy believes the city is the perfect home for that vision.
Charlottetown has heart. It’s a place where community matters, stories matter, and people still connect. And that makes it the perfect place for cultures and traditions to grow together. @tekilamexicancuisine

TIM BANKS
Tim Banks
Big Picture Mind, Collaborative Spirit An Island entrepreneur with a deep belief in Prince Edward Island’s potential, Tim Banks has built his career around creating places where people, businesses, and communities can thrive. Inspired by Charlottetown’s role as the province’s historic capital, his work is guided by a commitment to balance prosperity with preservation, while creating spaces that are genuinely enjoyable to spend time in. Tim played a leading role in revitalizing Royalty Crossing, Uptown Charlottetown’s shopping destination, helping re-energize the mall and attract new anchor tenants that reshaped the area into a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike. True to form, he also added a little personality of his own with Folk Fries, a funky fast food counter serving lovingly named diggity dogs, next level Island fries, and some seriously killer milkshakes.
When he is not working, you will likely find him enjoying a great steak at Papa Joe’s, grabbing a coffee at Timothy’s, or browsing natural products at The Root Cellar. At his core, Tim is a builder, collaborator, and firm believer in Charlottetown’s future, always eager to work with others who share that optimism. @wherepeishops
Beyond the city, Tim is the mastermind behind FIN and the Blackbush development in Tracadie, projects that reflect his passion for thoughtful design, Island culture, and experiences rooted in place. Across everything he does, Tim dreams big and brings a sense of fun, creativity, and visitor experience into the details.

TOWN CITY
Ryan and Jenna Greeley Skate Culture with Island Roots
For Ryan and Jenna Greeley, building Town City was about more than opening a store, it was about coming home. Ryan, born and raised in Charlottetown, and Jenna, originally from Nova Scotia, returned to the Island after years away to raise their daughter closer to family. Each visit back made them realize something was missing: a dedicated skate shop in the heart of the city. Ryan had long dreamed of opening one, while Jenna brought creative experience from her work in fashion and design. Together, they launched Town City, now the only skateshop on PEI. That distinction has allowed them to introduce sought-after brands like Nike SB and Dime – labels Islanders once had to travel off-Island to find. Alongside global names, the shop carries its own inhouse line, Town City, featuring apparel and skateboards inspired by Island stories. Their “Can Ban” design, for example, pays tribute to PEI’s former glass-only beverage law. Collaborations with regional designers keep the brand grounded in local creativity.
The space itself reflects that same spirit. After starting at 151 Queen Street, the shop moved to 181 Queen, where original hardwood floors – marked by decades of retail history – add character beneath custom fixtures crafted by local makers. The result is a modern shop with deep community ties. Ryan and Jenna aim to blend a big city aesthetic with a small town welcome, creating a space that feels inclusive and connected.
There’s no place like Charlottetown – especially when one city block can be home to so many independent, locally owned businesses, all thriving side by side. @towncityshop

Sean Doke
Bridging Gaps & Amplifying Voices Sean Doke helps bring important stories to the forefront. Especially in his work at L’nuey, the organization that supports the rights and governance work of the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq (Mi’kmaq of PEI), his role connects leadership, community voices, and the wider public. From supporting engagement processes to sharing information through media, events, and digital platforms, much of his work focuses on making complex topics clear, accessible, and meaningful. “What I’m most passionate about is building understanding and bridging gaps,” he says. “Helping people see one another more clearly and honestly.” That spirit carries into Juku’e, L’nuey’s podcast, which he hosts. The name means “come here” in Mi’kmaw – an invitation to listen, learn, and connect with the work being done on behalf of Mi’kmaw communities in Epekwitk (PEI). Sean’s connection to the Island runs deep. He grew up between Charlottetown and Summerside, spending time on Lennox Island with family. Some of his earliest memories are of Mawio’mi (powwow) season – moving to the rhythm of the drum and running along the shoreline. Big family gatherings at his great-grandmother’s home taught him a strong sense of belonging, while stories of his fisherman great-grandfather helped shape his lifelong connection to the water. He was called his grandmother’s shadow, following close behind as she moved through community and family life, absorbing lessons that would stay with him for years to come.
Today, Charlottetown’s mix of cultures, arts, and perspectives keeps him inspired. When he’s not working, he’s often outside with his dog and fiancée, or finding balance at the gym – small routines that help him recharge. For visitors, Sean hopes the Island offers a sense of peace.
In those moments of stillness, we’re reminded to simply be present– and that can be powerful. We are human beings, not human doings. He also hopes more people come to understand that Mi’kmaw history isn’t just something in the past. Mi’kmaw people are still here, with a living culture, language, and connection to this place that stretches back thousands of years. Experiencing the Island through that lens adds a deeper layer to what makes it special. “Learning from the Mi'kmaw ways, I believe we can live in a more harmonious way with our natural environment that surrounds and sustains us. For without it, we simply cannot exist.” @lnuey.ca

TH E ATRE Sobey Family Theatre & The Mack
Confederation Centre is home of the long-running Charlottetown Festival, a theatrical affair featuring a variety of productions. This year’s Charlottetown Festival presented by Cavendish Farms will feature the beloved Anne of Green Gables — The Musical™ and Come From Away.
COME FROM AWAY
(June 30 - September 26, Sobey Family Theatre) Come From Away is based on the true story of a small town that welcomed the world. What started as an average day in Gander, Newfoundland turned into a historic moment when 38 planes carrying thousands of people were diverted there on September 11, 2001. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but the East Coast community welcomed these “come from aways” into their lives with open arms; uneasiness turned into trust, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. Come From Away tells a heartwarming story of kindness in the face of unprecedented circumstances.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES — THE MUSICAL™
(June 25 - Sept 5, Sobey Family Theatre)
This cherished family musical tells the poignant and funny story of a freckle-faced, red-haired orphan named Anne Shirley who arrives at the Bright River Railway Station full of hope for a new life. Her destination is the home of brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. When she arrives at Green Gables, Anne is devastated when she discovers that the elderly siblings were expecting a boy from the orphanage, and then ecstatic when they decide to keep her. With her fiery temper, love of melodrama and romance, and penchant for misadventure, she brings laughter, love, and more than a little consternation to the Cuthberts’ quiet lives. In return, Anne finds the happiness and the home she has longed for all her life. With a 28-member company and a 14-member live orchestra, this legendary musical has delighted millions of people at Confederation Centre of the Arts.
