welcome to N
o matter what brings you here, whether it's a vacation, a conference, visiting family, or simply passing through, I'm glad you've chosen to spend some time with us.
There's no one way to experience Albany County, and that's exactly what makes it special. Every community has its own personality. One minute you can be exploring historic streets or taking in a show downtown, and the next you're hiking a trail, enjoying a meal, a local restaurant, or discovering a small business you never expected to find. That's what we mean when we say Albany County is A Place for All and Any. It's a place where everyone can find something that speaks to them. You'll notice this year's Destination Guide is a little different. Instead of simply telling you where to go, we've built in ways for you to interact with it. Follow a scavenger hunt, test your knowledge with trivia, or try one of our choose-your-own-adventure activities. There isn't a right way to use this guide. It's meant to help you discover the places and experiences that interest you most. Of course, there are some places that have become favorites for visitors and residents alike. From our historic landmarks and cultural attractions to our parks, Rail Trail, festivals, theaters, and waterfronts, there's always something happening somewhere in Albany County. Every season offers a new reason to come back. My advice is simple: don't be afraid to wander a little. Take a road you hadn't planned on taking. Stop into a local shop. Ask someone where they like to eat. Some of the best experiences aren't the ones you planned before you arrived. On behalf of everyone in Albany County, thank you for visiting. I hope you enjoy your stay, make a few great memories, and leave looking forward to your next trip back. See you around Albany County. Daniel P. McCoy Albany County Executive

in Albany By: Liam Delaney
Albany's story has always been one of connection. As one of the nation's oldest cities and a historic gateway along the Hudson River, the Capital City has welcomed generations of newcomers seeking opportunity, community, and a place to call home. Mozzarella Sticks with Melba Sauce
Mini Hot Dogs
Tip: Order both sauces and decide which side you’re on.
Every region has foods that locals are fiercely proud of! In Albany County, that includes mini hot dogs topped with meat sauce, mozzarella sticks served with raspberry sauce, and a roast beef sandwich known simply as a Neba. Whether they got their start here or have become longtime local favorites, these are a few foods worth knowing before you order.
Mini hot dogs have been a Capital Region favorite for generations. Smaller than a traditional hot dog, they are commonly topped with mustard, onions and meat sauce and ordered several at a time. Gus’s Hot Dogs in Watervliet has been serving its mini dogs for more than 60 years, while Hot Dog Charlie’s, which dates back to 1922, has a location in Cohoes. Tip: Order them “with the works” for mustard, onions and meat sauce.
If you order mozzarella sticks in Albany, you may be asked whether you want marinara or melba sauce. The raspberry-based dipping sauce is a Capital Region favorite and one of those combinations that can catch visitors by surprise. Plenty of local restaurants serve both, so there is no need to give up the marinara completely.
Fish Fry
The Capital Region has its own take on the fish fry. Rather than a traditional fish sandwich, the local version is known for a long piece of fried fish served on a hot dog bun. Ted’s Fish Fry opened its first location on Third Avenue in Watervliet and has been serving the Capital Region since 1949. Today, there are several Ted’s locations throughout Albany County. Fun fact: You can order mini hot dogs at Ted’s Fish Fry as well.
The Neba
A Neba is a hot roast beef sandwich served on a sesame seed bun and a name that has stuck around the Capital Region for decades. Mr. Subb still serves the sandwich today, along with variations topped with cheese, cheddar sauce or bacon.
Cider Donuts
Cider donuts are a fall staple across Upstate New York and Albany County has plenty of places to get your fix. Cider Belly Doughnuts in Albany puts its own spin on the classic with a rotating lineup of flavors and toppings, while Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont sells fresh cider donuts at the farm.

Fun fact: Cider Belly is a Jonas Brothers favorite. The band included the Albany shop in its “Favorite Tour Spots” Apple Maps guide and highlighted the Caramel Apple donut. Try also: Bitchin’ Donuts in Albany for plant-based vegan donuts and rotating specialty flavors.
Fudge Fancy/Fudge Fantasy
Depending on where you grew up, you may know it as a Fudge Fancy or a Fudge Fantasy. Either way, the Capital Region cookie combines a shortbread or sugar cookie with a thick layer of fudge. The treat has been part of local bakery cases for decades and remains one of the region’s more unusual sweets.
Cheesecake
On Hamilton Street in Albany, Cheesecake Machismo has become known for an ever-changing selection of cheesecake flavors. Instead of keeping the same menu every day, the shop posts the flavors available that day and stays open until 8 PM or until the cheesecake sells out. Its Frankencake lets customers combine six to 12 available slices into one cake.

Albany Beef
“Albany beef” has nothing to do with cattle. The name was once used for Atlantic sturgeon caught in the Hudson River. The fishery was so productive that sturgeon became a common source of protein throughout the Hudson Valley and picked up the Albany nickname. Today, recreational and commercial fishing for Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon is prohibited in the Hudson River.
Steamed Hams
Albany has another food claim to fame, although this one is fictional. In the 1996 Simpsons episode “22 Short Films About Springfield,” Principal Skinner tries to convince Superintendent Chalmers that “steamed hams” is an Albany expression for hamburgers.

in Albany
Albany’s Vital Role in the American Revolution Albany played a critical role during the American Revolution because of its strategic location along the Hudson River. As an important transportation and trading center, the city connected New England with the middle colonies. Whoever controlled Albany could influence the movement of troops and supplies, making the city one of the most valuable locations in the conflict. 1750s–1760s: Albany’s Military Foundations Take Shape Before the Revolution, Albany was already a key strategic hub, as its economic dominance, key central location, and growing population made it a city on the rise. It was at The Crailo State Historic Site where the fortressestate of the Hendrick Van Rensselaer family served as Fort Crailo in the French and Indian War. It was here during the war that the iconic American song, ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ was supposedly penned. The song was originally created out of humor, inspired by the Colonial soldiers stationed at the fort, but would later be adopted and transformed into the classic patriotic tune. Henry K. Van Rensselaer, grandson to the estates original owner, served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th Regiment of the Albany County Militia, where he served under General Philip Schuyler, and their men would valiantly fight the British forces north, setting up for the pivotal Battle of Saratoga. 1775–1776: Albany’s Leaders Step Forward As tensions escalated into war, Albany’s prominent families became central figures in America’s quest for independence. General Philip Schuyler rose as a Major General in the Continental Army. General Schuyler organized military efforts in forts Ticonderoga, New York City, Canada, and was instrumental in providing intelligence to George Washington. His family home now serves as the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, a museum dedicated to sharing the stories of the Schuyler family, the enslaved residents of the home, and the political importance of the site. In this home’s parlor, his daughter, Elizabeth Schuyler, married founding father Alexander Hamilton in December of 1780. 1777: The Revolution’s Turning Point It was in 1777 that the historic Battle of Saratoga occurred, one of the most pivotal battles in the struggle for American independence. The victory helped secure foreign assistance from France, as the colonies proved their combat capabilities here in upstate New York. The Van Schiack Mansion served as military headquarters during the Revolution. The Continental Army camped behind the house and noteworthy figures, including General Philip Schuyler and Benedict Arnold, would meet in the home for strategy meetings. Colonel Peter Gonesvoort and Catherine Van Schaick were also married in the home. Today, the home is managed by the General Peter Ganesvoort Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. DISCOVER ALBANY DESTINATION GUIDE

Abraham Ten Broeck commanded the New York Militia in the critical Battle of Saratoga. He would later come to serve as the 28th Mayor of Albany from 1779 to 1783, guiding the city through the final years of the revolution. The Ten Broeck Mansion was built in the late 1790s for General Ten Broeck and his wife, Elizabeth Van Rensselaer, and the couple would name the house ‘Prospect.’ Following The Battle of Saratoga, Colonel Hendrick Quackenbush of the Continental Army was tasked with escorting the captured British General John Burgoyne back to Albany. He and his army led Burgoyne to Quackenbush House, today home to the Olde English Pub, where he was formally handed over to General Schuyler. Troops were stationed outside of the home during the duration of Burgoyne’s time at the home, turning the property into a temporary celebratory military post. The house is the second longest standing building in Albany, and now serves as a fantastic place to eat when exploring the Revolution in New York’s Capitol. 1778–1783: Albany’s Civic Leadership in the War’s Final Years The Battle of Saratoga was a turning point in the war, but far from the end, which occurred 6 years later. Albany’s leadership wasn’t only militaristic, it was civic, strategic, and deeply rooted in its prominent families. Historic Cherry Hill is a beautifully preserved 18th-century home that offers a glimpse into more than 200 years of Albany history through the stories of the Van Rensselaer and Ten Broeck families who lived there. Built in 1787 for Philip and Maria Van Rensselaer, the home stood at a time when Albany was a critical economic and political center Post-Revolution. The Van Rensselaer family played an active role in the conflict, commanding the Albany County Militia, checking British and Tory forces during the 1780 Mohawk Valley raids. Post-War Memories: Albany’s Revolutionary Legacy In the years following the war, Albany’s Revolutionary figures remained central to the city’s identity. The Schuyler Mansion, Ten Broeck Mansion, Crailo State Site, Historic Cherry Hill, and the Quackenbush House all became lasting markers of the era. The Albany Rural Cemetery is the final resting place for both Abraham Ten Broeck and Phillip Schuyler, making it the perfect destination after visiting their two historic mansions. The cemetery was established on October 7th, 1844, and is one of the nation's most stunning and historic cemeteries. It rests on 467 acres of land, and includes burial plots of many of the region’s and the nation’s historic figures.

Located along the Hudson River and along routes leading toward New England, Canada, and the upper Hudson Valley, the region saw the movement of soldiers, supplies, and militia throughout the conflict. One of its most significant Revolutionary War landmarks is the Bennington Battlefield in present-day Walloomsac, where American forces defeated British and Loyalist troops on August 16, 1777. Although named for nearby Bennington, Vermont, the battle was actually fought on New York soil in what is now Rensselaer County. The American victory weakened British General John Burgoyne’s campaign and helped set the stage for his surrender at Saratoga two months later—a turning point that encouraged France to openly support the American cause. Albany’s craft beverage history spans nearly 400 years, starting with Dutch settlers and continuing into the 21st Century. The Dutch acceptance of alcohol gave rise to one of the very first brewing industries in Colonial America and it continues today in breweries, cideries, wineries, distilleries, and meaderies across the county. From the Warehouse District to the Helderberg Hilltowns, there are plenty of reasons to raise a glass here. West of Albany, at the base of the Helderberg Escarpment, is where the county’s farms have been growing apples, grapes, and grain for generations. Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont has been a working farm for over a century and today its orchards and fields supply ingredients for beer and cider made right on the property. Since opening its tasting room in 2016, the farm’s biergarten has sat surrounded by orchards and overlooking the hop yard, making it an easy place to settle in with a drink after picking your own berries, apples, or pumpkins. It’s a quintessential Helderberg stop, where the farm is part of what’s in your glass. A few miles away in East Berne, Helderberg Mountain Brewing Company has been building a following since 2015, brewing small batches with as much New York grown malt and hops as they can get their hands on. The tap room is family and pet friendly, with a covered outdoor pavilion and live music most Saturday afternoons. Guests are welcome to bring their own food, play cornhole, and a food truck usually rolls in on Saturdays during the warmer months. The tap room has the easygoing feel of a neighborhood backyard, with plenty of reasons to stay awhile.

Beer isn’t the only thing brewed in Albany County! Albany takes its coffee seriously. Local roasters turn carefully sourced beans into everything from pour-overs and espresso to cold brew, while neighborhood coffee shops keep their menus fresh with creative seasonal drinks. Whether you’re looking for a quick cup, a place to settle in or a bag of locally roasted beans to bring home, there’s plenty brewing here. Stacks Espresso Bar has grown from its Albany roots into a Capital Region favorite, serving specialty coffee from three locations in the city. Stop in on Lark Street, Broadway, or State Street for espresso, drip coffee and more. At Alias Coffee on North Pearl Street, coffee takes the center stage. Owner Hernán Lopez honed his craft as a coffee roaster before launching Alias, bringing carefully crafted espresso drinks and specialty coffee to downtown Albany. Across from Washington Park, Jacob Alejandro brings its detail-driven approach to Albany with espresso, pour-overs, and creative seasonal drinks that make the menu worth checking more than once. In Delmar, Brewtus Roasting takes visitors closer to the roasting process. Stop by the neighborhood roastery and tasting room for a cup, then take home a bag of freshly roasted beans for later.

Just down the road in Voorheesville, Meadowdale Farm Winery is doing something no one else in the country is: producing birch wine, made by hand from tree sap using a 1736 recipe as a nod to Albany’s Dutch roots. Alongside the birch wine, the tasting room pours apple and hybrid grape wines as well. Don’t leave without trying their Ice Cider, a multiple gold-medal winner and a perennial favorite. Back in Albany, the Warehouse District brings several of the county’s craft beverage destinations together within a short stretch of the city. Nine Pin Cider holds New York’s very first farm cidery license, issued in 2013, and has been turning 100% New York apples into cider from its Warehouse District tasting room ever since, with a calendar that stays packed with trivia nights, live music, and rotating pop-ups for visitors who want more than just a pour.
Down the street, Fidens Brewing Company has earned national attention for its hop-forward IPAs, all from its unassuming Broadway taproom. Druthers Albany fills a 1901 warehouse with house-brewed beer, hearty comfort food, and plenty of room to settle in with friends. Fort Orange Brewing is a microbrewery that takes its name and logo from Fort Orange, the Dutch fort established in Albany in 1624. Stop by the spacious taproom for fresh, flavorful beers with regular trivia nights and cornhole leagues alongside their IPAs, stouts and other brews. Beer may dominate the Warehouse District, but the city’s spirits and mead scene has their own stories to tell. Albany Distilling Company holds the distinction of being the first distillery to operate in Albany since Prohibition. Stop into their Bar & Bottle Shop for cocktails and pair your drink with pizza from DeFazio’s for an easygoing night out.

Settle into the spacious coffeehouse for a cup or browse the selection of fresh roasted beans to bring home. Tucked inside a converted 19th-century firehouse on Jefferson Street, Station Six serves locally roasted coffee, from classic espresso drinks to flavored cold brews. It’s a neighborhood stop worth seeking out, just a short walk from the New York State Museum and Empire State Plaza. The Daily Grind has been a Lark Street fixture for decades. The family-owned business has been roasting coffee for decades, pairing its house-roasted beans with all-day breakfast, sandwiches, and the familiar feel of a longtime neighborhood café. Beer isn’t the only thing brewing at Common Roots Brewing Company’s Albany Outpost. Alongside its beer, the brewery serves its own roasted coffee and offers bags of beans to bring home, giving coffee drinkers another reason to make a stop. Scavenger Hunt! Take a photo of your barista's latte art and post it on socials! Don't forget to tag the shop and Discover Albany!
New Scotland Spirits brings its Helderberg Whiskies, distilled from grain grown in the founder’s hometown, into a Lark Street tasting room styled like a 1920s speakeasy. Around the corner, The Bull and Bee Meadery, now located on Broadway offers its own locally made meads alongside New York craft beer, wine and spirits. Follow the Hudson River and you’ll find more craft beverage stops tucked into the county’s river towns. In Cohoes, what started as a backyard homebrewing hobby became Fallside Brewing. Further south in Ravena, Rail to River Brewing is a veteran-owned nano farm brewery pouring English and American style ales out of small storefront on main street, proof that you don’t need to make a big building to make a big impression.
