WELCOME TO

L

ike every other community around the world, it has been a long time for Albany County since the pandemic started, but our community is resilient thanks to a partnership between businesses, government and our nonprofits. And since then, our restaurant, hospitality and tourism industries are roaring back to provide unique and enjoyable experiences for locals and visitors alike!

Whether it’s summer or it’s winter, if you’re looking for an outdoor recreational experience with incredible views, Albany County has hidden gems including Lawson Lake County Park, the Albany County Rail Trail, the Ann Lee Pond Preserve, Lake Myosotis at the Huyck Preserve and Thacher Park, to name just a few where you can hike, climb, fish, swim, cross country ski and so much more. Aside from learning about the various ecosystems that call Albany County home, tourists travel from around the country for educational – and even haunted – tours of the New York State Capitol, while the Empire State Plaza, the New York State Museum and numerous other historic and cultural sites are just a short walk away. If you want to shop or eat out, be sure to visit one of the countless business districts along the revitalized North Pearl, Lark and Remsen Streets situated alongside the scenic Hudson River. You can also take a trip to Stuyvesant Plaza, Colonie Center and Crossgates Malls, where you will also find countless options for shopping, lodging and other entertainment. Downtown Albany also boasts world renowned and local music and entertainment acts at a number of venues, including our MVP Arena, the Palace Theatre, the Egg, and the new Capital Repertory Theatre and Empire Live. There is so much Albany County has to offer for everyone, but you’ll have to experience it for yourself. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Angelique Powell

About:

Angelique Powell has lived in Watervliet for about three years and currently works in the City of Albany. She grew up locally and left for Boston, MA after college returning to the Albany area after five years. She has always considered the Albany area to be her home base, knowing she would eventually return as an adult and build her life here. Angelique loves the very real sense of community that exists and is so pervasive in Albany. She found it both in the theatre community and professionally in the nonprofit sector. This is a community that strives to take care of each other, make space and create opportunity for each other, challenges each other and rallies behind each other in such a significant way.

My Albany Picks:

EAT & DRINK

PLAY

The Hollow Bar + Kitchen 79 North Pearl Street, Albany thehollowalbany.com

Albany Center Gallery 488 Broadway, Albany albanycentergallery.og

There’s so much great food in Albany, but The Hollow Bar + Kitchen is one of my favorites. I’ve worked at a couple locations downtown and The Hollow has always been a fun, vibrant location to grab a meal whether it’s lunch, after-work dinner, or drinks after a show. The Kale Caesar Salad has been my go-to for several years now.

Albany Center Gallery! Firstly, Tony Iadicicco is the most wonderful, playful, collaborative spirit in town and I’ve had the privilege of creating art there, experiencing art there, and even being the art there. My favorite thing to do there is to be a part of or witness the holistic art experiences that are hosted there.

VISIT My favorite place to visit in Albany is Washington Park. Whether it be to see another explosive production by Playhouse Stage Company, participate in a run, enjoy holiday festivities, amplify the voices of our youth or simply to sit in the amphitheater with a friend and have a picnic, Washington Park has a way of feeling like it’s answering a call to action from the community. LEARN I know I’m supposed to select a place, but the people of Albany have taught me so much. There’s so much history of the leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers that came before us, I’ve found that we’re such a proud people, we often get that history from each other first and foremost, as an oral retelling. I’ve had the privilege of having Adam Blake Jr. and Catherine Blake’s story given to me, and be a part of sharing this astounding history at The Blake Annex, so if I had to pick a specific location, it would have to be The Blake Annex! Albany Fun Facts: SHOP I’d have to say Lodge’s! Talk about having it all, history, community, family. I remember when I was younger, Champion was a major brand. I love that I can pick it up right at Lodge’s. Not to mention that they have everything, and I’ve been able to purchase an entire costume for one of my shows on my lunch break and not have to go out of my way. About:

My wife, Elisa, and I have lived in Colonie for over 15 years, however our home away from home is Delmar. For the better part of the 12 plus years, our family has owned Shogun Sushi in Delmar (a Hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem) in the Main Square Plaza by the Four Corners. The thing that draws us to Bethlehem is the outstanding communities in and surrounding the area. The combination of diverse family-owned businesses and walkable neighborhoods makes it the perfect area for families.

My Bethlehem/Coeymans/New Scotland Picks:

EAT & DRINK

My favorite place to eat in this area is hands down Yanni’s Too in Coeymans. Their patio has the perfect view of the Hudson and their fresh fish specials are amazing. The fried whole belly clams platter and rotating fresh soft shell crab specials are always a treat. For the drink, the “Sloppy Shelby”, which is a kicked up wine slushie cocktail, is the perfect drink on a hot summer day.

The Albany County Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail, spanning nine miles from Voorheesville to the city of Albany, is a local treasure. A pavilion, similar in design to Voorheesville’s former railroad station, caps off the New Scotland end of the rail trail. Cohoes, Green Island Watervliet

&

Cohoes, Green Island and Watervliet are dubbed the “Three Amigos” by New York Assemblyman John McDonald, the former Cohoes mayor. Located on the northern edge of Albany County, these three Hudson riverfront communities were historically manufacturing centers that are now experiencing an exciting period of revitalization.

Cohoes

Located where the Mohawk meets the Hudson, Cohoes began as a quiet agricultural community. Following the construction of the original Erie Canal and Champlain Canals, the city experienced rapid growth as a manufacturing center. By 1870, Cohoes earned the nickname “Spindle City” with six large cotton mills running over 200,000 spindles. Today, Cohoes is experiencing a revitalization with an array of new breweries, restaurants, and small businesses.

Green Island

Nearby on Watervliet’s northeastern border is Green Island, one of the few places in New York where the incorporated village and town have the same boundaries. Just under one square mile in size, Green Island is comprised of three islands: Green Island, Center Island (now known as Starbuck Island) and McGill Island. Starbuck Island has recently undergone a complete transformation with a new resort-style community featuring luxury apartments, riverside dining and more!

Watervliet

The City of Watervliet is geographically small at just under 1.5 square miles. During the early 19th century, Watervliet became a major manufacturing community. Ed & Linda Tremblay About Ed

Ed Tremblay is a fourth generation Cohoesier, who has lived there all 67 years of his life. Both sides of his family came to Cohoes to work in the Harmony Mills. He has been an active member of the community since his children were small. He was the Community and Economic Development Director for the City of Cohoes during the last 13 years of his active career. He is actively involved in seven nonprofit organizations in the City of Cohoes. The thing he loves most about the community is the small city spirit. He believes there is something special about a community where you can get to know so many of your neighbors and local business owners. You can go to your favorite restaurant, and they know your special dietary needs. You walk into the coffee shop, and they know your favorite drink. You get to know your neighbor’s dogs as they walk by your house every night. That is what is so great about living in Cohoes.

About Linda

Linda Tremblay has lived in Cohoes for her entire life (67 years). Cohoes was a wonderful place for her to grow up. As a young child most of her extended family lived within a 10-block radius of each other. They lived in neighborhoods where houses were close and neighbors were like family. Because of the strong sense of community in Cohoes, she was married and raised her children there. Linda still volunteers at her church and numerous non-profit organizations hoping to ensure that her grandchildren’s generation will be given the best opportunities to thrive and grow in a safe and caring environment.

Our Cohoes, Green Island & Watervliet Picks: EAT & DRINK: LINDA’S PICK

My husband and I love all the restaurants in Cohoes. We try to frequent and support them whenever possible. I really enjoy Max 410 at the Van Schaick Country Club. In the warm weather, it is so relaxing to have lunch or dinner on their outdoor deck overlooking the golf course. The staff is great, and the food never disappoints. My favorite dish there is Seafood 410. I eat glutenfree, and the chef is always able to accommodate my dietary needs Max 410 Van Schaick Island Country Club 201 Continental Avenue, Cohoes max410.com

PLAY: LINDA’S PICK My favorite place to play in Cohoes is the Cohoes Music Hall. This historic venue, built in 1874, has been beautifully restored to its original design. My favorite thing to do there is see a play, a musical, or listen to individual musicians because of the amazing acoustics. My Guilderland Picks: EAT & DRINK

Athos Restaurant on Western Avenue (Rt 20) is my favorite place to eat in Guilderland. I favor ethnic restaurant food, and Athos scores best! Athos was voted one of the top Greek restaurants in America and is the Capital District’s only restaurant devoted to serving classic Greek cuisine.

One of my favorite places in Altamont is a tot park/ playground called Schilling Park located on Maple Avenue, just west of the business district. The reclaimed space has been refurbished with fantastic plantings and contains the Capital District’s only outside stone labyrinth. It is a refuge from the hustle of the streets, a joy to parents with children, and walking the labyrinth provides a contemplative escape from life’s doldrums.

Officially established in 1890, Altamont Village grew from a small outpost on the Schoharie Plank Road, to a bustling New York Central Railroad stop for summer visitors to its storied hotels and the vacation houses of Albany's wealthy, as well as carrying workers and trade goods to the Capital and the Hudson River transports to New York City. About:

Molly Belmont lives in Knox, located on the western edge of Albany County. She and her family moved there in 2011 with a desire to live in the country. They feel closer to the natural world, and every season brings out different qualities in the landscape. BREWING UP

Albany’s Past

BY: ALBANY BEER HISTORIAN, CRAIG GRAVINA

Albany’s brewing history spans nearly 400 years, starting with the earliest Dutch settlers and continuing into the 21st century. The Dutch acceptance of alcohol resulted in the very early development of a brewing industry-perhaps the first in Colonial America. Over the next centuries Albany’s beer-making industry continued to expand, and by the early 19th century had—along with New York City and Philadelphia—grown into one of the main brewing centers of the young United States. Capitalizing on the availability of raw ingredients, and its proximity to waterways, Albany’s breweries exported their notably strong offering, Albany Ale, to every major city in the country, South America, and even as far away as the Hawaiian Islands by mid-century. Albany and the Hudson Valley has continued to see its breweries rise and fall over the last 100 years, and is still seeing the expansion of craft brewing across the Capital Region.

ALBANY COUNTY’S CRAFT BEVERAGE RENAISSANCE From Remsen Street in Cohoes, to the City of Albany’s Warehouse District, to the Helderberg Hilltowns, the local craft beverage scene is booming. Albany County is home to Nine Pin Cider, New York’s first farm cidery, and Royal Meadery, New York’s first licensed farm meadery. Sip, savor, and swirl craft beverages in Instaworthy converted warehouses, friendly taprooms tucked on historic main streets and scenic tasting rooms with stunning rural views. Plan your craft beverage adventure at Albany County’s breweries, distilleries, wineries, meaderies, and cideries today!
