CONFLICT MINERAL CONSTERNATION

It’s not so easy to follow the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission’s disclosure rule surrounding confl ict minerals. A new report from the Government Accountability Offi ce (GAO) found that two-thirds of public companies subject to the rule could not determine the origin of their confl ict minerals.

Under the rule, mandated under the DoddFrank Act, companies must identify the source of any of four minerals (gold, tin, tungsten and tantalum) that could be linked to violence in Africa. Th e GAO report discovered 67 percent could not determine the source of their confl ict minerals due to diffi culty obtaining the information from suppliers and communication issues. Th e confl ict minerals disclosure rule is proving expensive; Tulane University found that public companies paid approximately $709 million last year to comply. n
