Playtime for Children with Disabilities

When you think about childhood, you probably think about the nostalgic memories of days spent playing with dolls, building blocks, and jigsaw puzzles. A magical time where your imagination was able to run riot while you developed skills such as problem-solving. For some of us, playtime was likely to be random – no set time, toys, or routine; however, children with disabilities, are likely to prefer structure when playing. Why not set play time aside for your child to fit into their existing routine?

Playtime allows for the exploration and development of the senses; children with disabilities can quickly become overwhelmed by the senses; the structure can help to ease discomfort.

Creativity Ah, painting, who didn’t enjoy creating mini masterpieces when they were kids? Painting, drawing, and creating things with playdough can help children become comfortable with different textures as well as developing their knowledge of colours and shapes. Art based activities allow your child to express their feelings and imagination which can help to

make sense of the world around them and communicate their understanding of it.

Problem solving Problem solving is a crucial skill to develop throughout childhood and adult life; activities that encourage this skill make it fun and engaging rather than challenging and confusing. Take the classic jigsaw puzzle; all the pieces have to fit a certain way. Although jigsaws are an excellent way to solve a problem, it is useful to play with things such as building blocks too, as this can show your child that there are more ways than one to solve problems as there isn’t always a strict way to build or not to build something.

Pelvic Floor Exercises for Young People

A new video about pelvic floor exercises for young people. A few years ago the Association for Continence Advice (ACA) produced an award winning leaflet for young people titled “Your Pelvic Floor� leaflet.

The aim of was to educate teens about pelvic floor muscle training and why this is necessary and important, with the hope that they would see this as part of a holistic approach to keeping themselves healthy. The leaflet is still available from the ACA, relevant and widely used.

Incontinence is never normal and we are increasingly aware of the social and psychological implications, particularly for young people. Therefore, the pelvic floor leaflet and video are a way of normalizing prevention and allowing future generations access to education on this topic.

However, it was felt that to increase the educational impact for this age group, the leaflet should be replicated in a digital format that young people could access easily without the need to go through healthcare professionals.

Therefore, a video of the information in the leaflet has been produced and was launched at the ACA conference in May.

The ACA ask that information about the leaflet and video are shared widely and have noted that all age groups seem to find the leaflet helpful.

BHTA Releases 'Get Wise to Hand Hygiene and Decontamination of Medical Devices’

In support of areas of concern and talked about most recently in the press the BHTA Decontamination and Infection Prevention Members, industry experts have released these two supporting documents.

Hand hygiene which has been extensively in the news, are we hand hygiene savvy? Do we really care how clean our hands are? Hands pass and transmit germs on a daily basis and we should be considering what we are touching and passing on. Do you use hand gels or sanitisers? Should we use paper towels or hand driers? This leaflet helps you understand the meaning of Hand Hygiene – Downloadable at – http://bit.ly/2BL5fjm Decontamination of Medical Devices – How clean is clean? The aims of decontamination are to make reusable devices safe to be handled or used by: • Patients, carers, or other members of the public; • NHS and Community staff; • Maintenance staff; • Carriers and other transportation services; and • Supplier employees Risk can be minimised by some simple precautions. This guidance document provides advice on the handling of devices to be returned following use, and the BHTA gives guidance on the nature of decontamination required, as well as the generic methods to be used.

Putting safe systems in place to manage the decontamination of devices will contribute to meeting the requirements of the Department of Health’s reduction of cross infection targets.

Glossop Arts Project

Glossop Arts Project is a well-established organisation offering free Arts for Wellbeing sessions to people with long term physical and mental health conditions - based mainly in Glossop. We have collaborated with many other locals groups providing interesting and stimulating group projects.

Following the five ways to wellbeing we aim to learn new skills, study and connect with our community and environment keep our minds active by challenging ourselves with new projects.

LS Lowry inspired art Glossop Arts Project told us: “We provide a regular meaningful, focused, planned activity, our aim is for people to have a sense of increased wellbeing, selfconfidence and social inclusion” “We look at subjects like Art history, local heritage and environmental projects and different ways in being creative – we have used wire to make sculptures, felt making to create beautiful pictures as well as basic drawing and painting techniques.”

Felt-making project We take notice of our group and share concerns, plans and give each other support each other through good and bad times.

The sessions are run by a qualified Art Teacher and a registered experienced Social worker with over 25 years experience in the Voluntary and statutory sector.

Disabled Living is a charity which provides impartial information and advice about products, equipment (assistive technology) and services for disabled children, adults, older people, carers and the professionals who support them. We have a range of services which you can access via our helpline, through the website or at our Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions.

Equipz The team comprise occupational therapists, trusted assessors, moving and handling specialists, physiotherapists, nurses, continence specialists who together with knowledgeable information co-ordinators offer practical solutions to what may seem like unmanageable problems. The staff, respond to enquiries throughout the UK, primarily via our helpline and website, with some people opting to make an appointment to visit the Disabled Living Centre based in Manchester for a free equipment assessment.

We provide a confidential helpline managed by a team of specialist nurses and knowledgeable information staff. In addition, the website offers a wide range of downloadable free resources.
