Staying Safe on Bonfire Night

Bonfire night is a great night for all the family. But it is important to always take care, especially as children are more likely to get hurt by fireworks than adults. There are many simple steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of your family getting hurt. According to a study over 550 children under 16 are taken to A&E in the 4 weeks surrounding bonfire night and more boys are injured than girls, especially between the ages of 12 to 15.

Steps you can take Babies and children can wriggle and reach out, you should avoid holding a baby or child if you have a sparkler in your hand.

Avoid giving children under 5 a sparkler to hold, as they don’t really understand why they might be dangerous.

Make sure you give children gloves to wear if they are going to be holding a sparkler, sparklers can reach up to temperatures of 2000 degrees . Be sure to have a bucket of water handy, and teach children never to wave them near anyone else or run with them.

Tips for holding your own event Take a torch rather than a naked flame to read the firework instructions Make sure to light your firework at arms length, light it with a firework lighter or taper Store other fireworks in a metal box until they are ready to be used Never throw fireworks on a bonfire, even if they’ve been used Children will need guidance and supervision, create a barrier such as a rope for the children to stand behind Avoid drinking alcohol until the fireworks are over, this will help avoid any silly mistakes Some fireworks can take a long time to get started, so once its lit don’t go back to it At least 18 metres (60 ft) is the safest place for a bonfire away from any building

Reminders in an emergency Remember – Stop, drop and roll if your clothing catches fire If anyone is burnt – cool immediately with cold water and keep the burn running under water for at least 10 minutes Unless the burn is very small – go to hospital or get medical attention Don’t touch or pull any clothing that might be stuck to a burn Get advice from the A&E departments, your local doctor or call the NHS for advice on 111 Always get medical advice for any burns larger than a postage stamp Most of all – make sure you enjoy yourself!

Changing Places Facilities in the UK

The Changing Places Consortium launched its campaign in 2006 on behalf of the over 1/4 of a million people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, as well as older people.

To use the toilet in safety and comfort, many people need to be able to access a Changing Places, which have more space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist.

Big Lottery Fund

Grow Wild Community Projects 2019

Eligibility (Digital Fund Strand 2) • Your organisation must have been incorporated after the year 2000 • You must currently operate a product or service that is functional and being used by the type of people and communities you plan to serve in future

Eligibility UK registered charities and to groups affiliated to registered charities. Registered charities in areas where Leeds Building Society branches are located are eligible to apply. Applicants do not need to have a Leeds Building Society account or mortgage to apply for funding.

Type of grants Digital Fund Strand 2 offers grants of up to £500,000 for newer organisations that have already launched promising services that use digital to achieve scale or impact.

Grants are expected to last from 1 to 4 years.

Types of grants Grow Wild is awarding grants of £2,000 or £4,000 to groups across the UK to deliver projects in their community focused on UK native wildflowers, plants and fungi. Grow Wild will fund all sorts of things from creative events, art work to establishing wild flower areas.

The grants may range from £10 food vouchers to larger contributions including grants for domestic items such as washing machines, wheelchairs and housing adaptations. If you are applying for a piece of recreational equipment e.g. trikes or sports chairs we will only fund up to a maximum of £2500. Get Creative with TripleC at This Year’s Kidz to Adultz North Event!

Continuing to support children and young adults with disabilities and additional needs.

Disabled Living has an enviable reputation of organising the very prestigious Kidz to Adultz event since 2001 and now hold five of the largest FREE UK exhibitions totally dedicated to children and young adults up to 25 years with disabilities and additional needs, their parents, carers and all the professionals who support and work with them.

With 165+ exhibitors, this free event promises to be a ‘one stop shop’ offering visitors the opportunity to view the most up to date equipment and products including assistive technology. In addition, visitors will have access to information on services, benefits and support organisations including information on alternative funding streams for equipment, respite and much more.

Carmel Hourigan, senior manager with the support of The Kidz Team at Disabled Living,

has overseen the development of the show now in its eighteenth year!

A full programme of free CPD seminars will take place alongside the exhibition.

At this year’s show there is also a particular focus on the process to follow when booking a flight abroad, adopting practical approaches to improve sleep patterns, challenging behaviour and supporting families in the home and more.

We are absolutely delighted to have TripleC joining us at this year’s event. TripleC will be hosting a series of fun, practical workshops using the creative arts, dance and drama to encourage the use of the imagination and self-advocacy. Visitors are encouraged to participate and we are sure their workshops will be fun, exciting and enjoyable for all.

Bringing up a child with a disability can be a challenging and sometimes an overwhelming experience, whether it is knowing how to handle a particular condition or finding the money for a piece of equipment to improve their quality of life – which is particularly pertinent in an age where technology is advancing so much. A lot of our visitors do come back year-afteryear and often bring new faces along with them which has helped seen the show grow steadily every year.

Tips for the Elderly During the Winter Season

It’s a good idea to keep a warm blanket or throw handy to cover you feet and shoulders in the house or even walking around. Fleece is particularly effective at keeping you warm.

Make sure you are prepared in case of a power cut. Try making an emergency kit that will include contacts, along with non-perishable foods, water as well as medication.

When using a cane you should make sure that the edges are not smooth – they will need a rubber tip to help you walk.

Make sure you have had a flu jab.

Your flu jab will be free if you are 65 years or over, you receive carer’s allowance, or are a carer of someone whose welfare will be at risk if you fall ill. Remember it takes up to ten days for the vaccine to take effect so the sooner the better.

If you use a gas fireplace, gas heater or lanterns this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to.

Always check local weather forecasts or warnings before heading out so that you can be prepared.

Advocacy Skills for Families

Have you ever come out of a meeting and felt you haven’t been heard?

8th November 10am – 3pm, Darlington 22nd November 10am – 3pm, London This one-day training is for families who want to work with services and practitioners to get better outcomes for their loved ones and to support their friends in an informal capacity.

We will look at:

• Working in partnership • Presenting your ideas • Negotiation skills • Action planning and prioritising • Staying strong

Learning Disability England with its members’ support can offer this training free for family members of people with Learning Disabilities.

It will be co facilitated by a family member and LDE team member. We will provide tea, coffee and a sandwich lunch.

Sorry on this occasion we cannot offer help with travel or support costs but if there is demand we will look for funding to be able to do that in the future.

As you may remember, the Disabled Children’s Partnership published research this summer that showed there was a £1.5 billion funding gap for health and social care services. I am sure you will have also seen an increasing number of stories in the press about the impact of cuts and financial constraints on support for children and families. These cuts should not be happening.

Disabled Living is a charity which provides impartial information and advice about products, equipment (assistive technology) and services for disabled children, adults, older people, carers and the professionals who support them. We have a range of services which you can access via our helpline, through the website or at our Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions.

Equipz The team comprise occupational therapists, trusted assessors, moving and handling specialists, physiotherapists, nurses, continence specialists who together with knowledgeable information co-ordinators offer practical solutions to what may seem like unmanageable problems. The staff, respond to enquiries throughout the UK, primarily via our helpline and website, with some people opting to make an appointment to visit the Disabled Living Centre based in Manchester for a free equipment assessment.

We provide a confidential helpline managed by a team of specialist nurses and knowledgeable information staff. In addition, the website offers a wide range of downloadable free resources.
