Creating Apps for Travellers with Disability: Apply for Contracts

The South East of Scotland Transport Partnership (SEStran) has ÂŁ150,000 to support up to 5 projects that look at developing a mobile app to help travellers with a disability to meet the challenges of using public transport.

Up to £300,000 could be available in a second phase to prototype the 2 best ideas and test them in the field. The competition is funded by Scottish Enterprise’s Can Do Innovation Challenge Fund under the SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative) programme.

SEStran is a regional transport partnership between City of Edinburgh, Clackmannanshire, East Lothian, Falkirk, Fife, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian.

Its area has a range of transport modes and issues, including urban congestion, rural transport, ferries and planes. It already offers a Thistle Assistance Card and app to help older people and those with disabilities to get around.

Understanding the challenges of travel Projects should identify and understand the challenges faced by travellers with a disability and how it affects the way they travel, to develop a mobile app that helps to overcome these issues.

The app must: benefit people with several disabilities, for example, sight impairment, hearing impairment, mobility issues and dementia incorporate journey planning and wayfinding features allow designated groups, such as family, emergency services and transport providers, to track the user in case of difficulty allow the user to ask third parties for help include multi-modal transport options have an adaptable user interface, dependent on what the disability is have the potential to be expanded at a later date to benefit people with disabilities not included in the initial launch

The grants may range from £10 food vouchers to larger contributions including grants for domestic items such as washing machines, wheelchairs and housing adaptations. Guide Dogs - Access Technology

Is Disabled Living Due for a Name Change?

The name Disabled Living implies we only support people with a disability, which is not the case.

We also support older people, those with long-term health conditions, people with bladder and bowel problems and just about anybody who can benefit from having a practical solution to an unmanageable problem. We also signpost to other organisations.

Therefore, many people do not contact us who could benefit from our services because they do not consider themselves ‘disabled’ Some people think we run a care home or day centre for people with disabilities Some of our services were established after the name changed to Disabled Living back in 1992 and are not directly linked to people who have a disability, such as our Bladder and Bowel UK service and training courses Some people think the name should be more positive

Throughout Disabled Living’s 120 year history we have had five name changes to reflect how the services have developed or to disassociated with a name that was not politically correct.

Therefore, another name change will only associate with progression!

Kidz to Adultz North 2018

What a fantastic event and pleased to report our busiest to date! We were delighted to welcome 4,075 visitors, healthcare professionals, parents, carers and over 500 children and young adults with disabilities and additional needs through the doors at EventCity Manchester on Thursday, 8th November. The event was a hive of activity from the moment the doors opened at 9.30am until the end of what was an exceptionally pleasing day for the Team at Disabled Living.

With over 170 exhibitors showcasing a wide range of the most up to date equipment, products and included a large number of service and support organisations, our visitors were able to find information and advice on:accessible vehicles, transport, assistive technology including telecare and mobility products, bathing and continence issues, wheelchairs and seating to information on education, benefits, sensory and much, much more...

1088 delegates were able to boost their CPD and knowledge by attending one or more of the free seminars running alongside the event.

Topics included specialist seating, practical strategies for supporting better sleep, effective communication for families of children with complex needs, flying with a disability, toilet training for children with additional needs and postural diets.

Visitors were able to interact with the very popular TripleC in the Activity Area and were 12

particularly pleased to meet Cherylee Houston (Izzy Armstrong from Coronation Street) one of its founder members. TripleC ran a series of fun, practical workshops throughout the day.

Their aim is to build confidence through creativity for disabled people of all ages within Greater Manchester. TripleC enables individuals to explore their identity through theatre, workshops, film and improvisation.

A Guide to Alcoholism and Dementia

By Oliver Clark Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is entirely preventable. It’s believed around 7% of people over the age of 60 exhibit signs of WernickeKorsakoff syndrome due to alcohol abuse. Many of these people may believe they are beginning to experience Alzheimer’s disease.

Assistant Dysphagia Practitioner Training Recommended for: People who work with or care for children or adults with dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties).

People involved in feeding adults or children who are on modified fluid or diets.

People responsible for preparing modified food or drinks, following a speech and language therapy assessment.

Content: Following the course, delegates will: Have an understanding of how normal swallowing works.

Be able to describe the signs and symptoms of dysphagia.

Have a range of strategies that will reduce the risk of aspiration or choking, which apply to anyone, diagnosed dysphagia or not.

Know how to identify which groups of people are more at risk from suffering dysphagia.

Understand the new IDDSI Descriptors for food and drink used in dysphagia management.

Be able to prepare food and drinks accurately, according to dysphagia management plans from Speech and Language Therapists.

Be able to offer appropriate food and drinks to patients with confidence.

These outcomes meet the standards set by the CQC and the National Patient Safety Agency and supports the core competencies outlined in the InterProfessionals Dysphagia Framework (2006).

This course has been updated to reflect the changes in National Descriptors by the implementation of IDDSI.
