Nocturia - What Is It? Do You Want to Know More?

Joanne, Specialist Nurse at Bladder & Bowel UK talks about what Nocturia is an the common symptoms to look out for. Many people experience night-time bladder problems. One of these conditions is known as Nocturia.

Nocturia is defined by the International Continence Society (ICS) as: "The number of times urine is passed during the main sleep period. Having woken to pass urine for the first time, each urination must be followed by sleep or the intention to sleep. This should be quantified using the bladder diary.”

The common symptoms are: To be woken from sleep by the desire to pass urine – not to be mistaken with a poor sleep pattern Urinary frequency during the night, more than twice a night Passing large volumes of urine at night Inability to sleep through the need to pass urine Some people experience this over a long period of time before seeking help.

Many put it down to age and although the incidence does increase with age it can happen to anyone at any age. This can lead to: chronic insomnia, fatigue, complaints from a bed partner and other household

members and the risk of falls with social, psychological, physical and financial implications and consequences.

Many describe low mood, lack of interest in hobbies, loss of concentration and change in lifestyle due to constant sleep disturbance and reduced amount of effective rest. Overall a reduction in an individual’s quality of life is, also, reported.

This is an area of bladder dysfunction not always addressed as individuals do not seek help. Joanne Hoyle Presents at Jersey Conference

Joanne had the privilege of being invited to speak at the 'A Fresh Approach to Continence Conference' held in St Helier on 13th September at the Pomme D’Or Hotel.

The event was organized by Family Nursing & Home Care with Fiona Le Ber taking the lead as the main organizer, devising the programme and inviting speakers.

During the conference I enjoyed excellent presentations on Faecal Incontinence, UTI Assessment tools, Holistic Continence Assessment and a Pelvic Floor Muscle rehabilitation.

My session was entitled Incontinence – A patient’s perspective which fits very well with my role at Bladder and Bowel UK as a patient representative. I gave an overview on feedback patients give about how having a bladder or bowel problem makes them feel about themselves from the point of view of isolation; the effects it has on their careers, relationships, hobbies; the reported feelings of embarrassment, loss of self.

It was a truly inspiring and motivating day presenting alongside Wendy Ness, Patricia McDermott and Alex Frankham to mention just a few of the other presenters.

I am sure that this is what you all hear every day in your clinics but actually having time to reflect on the impact that bladder and bowel problems have on individual’s quality of life is really thought provoking. It was a fantastic opportunity to also promote BBUK to a new audience who were keen to hear about our organization and what the team do.

The audience was made up of approximately 80 nursing staff from hospital, community and care homes. They were a wonderful audience, asking lots of questions, making comments and relating the sessions to patients in their care. Feedback was positive and comments were made about the passion and enthusiasm of the presenters.

This was my first trip to Jersey, so I explored the wonderful Quayside area, took a boat trip to see more of the coastline, ate beautiful seafood and enjoyed the annual air show. From the time I had to explore I would conclude that Jersey is very beautiful and has a lot to offer. I will be returning!

Launch of the New Paediatric Continence Forum Children’s Continence Commissioning Guide

The Paediatric Continence Forum (PCF) is an independent national campaign group which was set up in 2003 to improve government awareness of the needs of children and young people with continence problems and to improve NHS services in this area of child health. Bladder & Bowel UK are members alongside nurses and paediatricians and ERIC, The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity. There is formal representation from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Royal College of Nursing, the School and Public Health Nurses Association and the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association.

The work of PCF is supported by six clinical members: Coloplast UK Ltd, Ferring Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Kimberly-Clark Europe Ltd, Norgine Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Essity (formerly SCA Hygiene Products Ltd) and Closomat Ltd. As part of their work to improve services for children and young people with continence issues PCF produced a NICE accredited Children’s Continence Commissioning Guide in 2014. With significant input from Bladder & Bowel UK this Guide has now been fully updated, revised and rewritten and is based on the latest evidence. NICE no longer have the resources to accredit this type of guideline, but it has been endorsed and supported by other key organisations, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

The central premise of the Guide is that all children should have access to integrated children’s community continence services.

These services are clinically effective, improve the lives of children and their families and have the potential to generate significant cost savings for the NHS, through reduction in use of disposable containment products and reduced outpatient appointments, A& E attendances and hospital admissions.

Award for Excellence in Transition of Continence Care

The Paediatric Continence Forum have launched a new award to recognize excellence in the transition of care from children’s to adult continence services. The awards are designed to encourage services to consider the experience of young people and follow proper care pathways to ensure that the quality of care is sustained through integrated working and provision of appropriate support.

Applications for the award are invited form anyone working in continence services with children or adults or a combination of both.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate excellence in the application of the NICE Quality Standards QS 140 Transition from children’s to adults’ services and NICE guidance NG43 Transition from children’s to adults’ services for young people using health or social care services. Entries will be judged by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians with extensive experience in paediatric continence care and transition.

The deadline for entries is 22nd November.

Winners will be announced in January 2020 and will be given an award certificate, as well as a digital badge which can be used to promote their win in electronic communications and on social media.

How BBUK Can Communicate with You

The BBUK helpline At BBUK we operate a helpline for the general public and health professionals which involves email and telephone contact. This is usually appropriate for clinical and product questions involving one person.
