Visiting Relatives at Christmas Time

Most people do not discuss their bladder and bowel habits with their families and friends whether this involves constipation and taking a long time in the bathroom, urinary or faecal incontinence or urinary urgency and frequency including getting up during the night. All of these symptoms may cause embarrassment to the individual who is experiencing them and they may decide because of this not to invite family members to spend time at their home or may turn down an invitation to stay with relatives.

Christmas is a special time and a time for families and friends to be together. Do not let your bladder or bowel dictate where or how you spend this Christmas!

Some practical preparation and, if possible, some open communication will help you as individuals to spend time together and not allow your bladder and bowel to cause you to miss out or feel isolated.

Practical tips for preparation Ask for a bedroom that is closest to the toilet for convenience If you have a bladder problem especially at night buy a urinal that you feel comfortable to use in the bedroom to save lots of trips to the bathroom to aid discretion Ensure you have plenty of skin wipes and disposable bags to aid your hygiene regime and discreet disposal of incontinence products.

Ensure you have adequate protection in the form of continence pads, underwear and bed protection. It may be advisable to buy a more absorbent pad to aid your confidence when other people are around.

Speak to your GP prior to the Christmas period if you have any concerns re your bladder and bowels as medication may aid management of the issue Do not reduce your fluid or dietary intake as this may make the problem worse. If you suffer with bladder urgency reduce the amount of caffeinated drinks you drink. Try decaffeinated tea or coffee, diluted cordials and fruit teas as this may help to alleviate some of the urgency.

Public Involvement – We Need Your Help to Understand Night Time Bladder Problems

BBUK in conjunction with a pharmaceutical company are currently looking to recruit individuals who want to share their stories about night time bladder problems.

The overall aim is to raise awareness about the effects of these symptoms on individuals from a social and professional perspective.

Nursing Times Awards 2018 Congratulations to all nurses who were finalists in the Nursing Times Awards 2018. The ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London where nurses from all over the UK were honoured and recognised for their efforts and achievements.

Domini Mullins Advanced Surgical Care Practitioner, who works in the Healthy Bowel Service at Wythenshawe, was awarded as the winner of Continence Category Award.

Fellow MFT team colleagues, Clare Molyneux, Service Lead/Specialist Lower GI Physiotherapist and Specialist Nurse Karen Irwin BBUK/MFT, were able to celebrate the evening with Domini, along with other teams from MFT, who were finalists in other award categories.

Domini was recognised for the innovative, nurse led, Sacral Nerve Stimulation Service (SNS), providing care from her clinic, to her implanting the SNS device and following patients up post operatively and longer term follow up.

A super evening, meeting lots of fellow inspiring nurses, who were being recognised for the work they do to benefit patient care.

BBUK's Symposium Programme 2019

The education programme for BBUK’s symposium has just been released and promises to provide excellent CPD and re-validation opportunities through 3 learning streams.

The diverse range of seminars and workshops delivered by experts in their field, will present the latest evidence based research and clinical data. There are 12 seminars including: • Continence & Sexual Relationships • Mental Health & Continence • Improving Continence for Children & Young People with Neuro-disability • Prolapse and Urinary Incontinence, a combined approach to the pelvic floor • The Law and the Children’s Nurse • Continence in Older People For the full programme visit the website. There will be a comprehensive exhibition providing the opportunity for you to update your knowledge on the latest products, equipment and treatments.

The annual symposium is relevant to all HCPs working in the field of continence, bladder and bowel care. Due to venue capacity numbers places are limited. The symposium is always oversubscribed with a waiting list, so early booking is essential.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Awareness Session I hosted a health promotion event at Disabled Living promoting awareness around the pelvic floor muscles for staff covering areas including what are the pelvic floor muscles? How do they work? How do I do my pelvic floor exercises?

The session was attended 10 staff from differing backgrounds. The session was interactive and acted as a good information sharing exercise promoting individuals to be aware of their own muscles and how important it is to look after these essential muscles but to be able to promote reasons why others, that they come into contact with, should consider referral to a bladder and bowel service for individual advice on pelvic floor exercises to proactively manage any symptoms they may have.

We are now looking at other opportunities within the teams at Disabled Living of sharing

Is Disabled Living Due for a Name Change?

Bladder & Bowel UK, one of Disabled Living's services changed its name in 2016 and what a positive impact that has made - people know exactly who the service supports.

Now we are considering if we should change the name of the charity Disabled Living.

The name Disabled Living implies we only support people with a disability, which is not the case.

We also support older people, those with long-term health conditions, people with bladder and bowel problems and just about anybody who can benefit from having a practical solution to an unmanageable problem. We also signpost to other organisations.

Therefore, many people do not contact us who could benefit from our services because they do not consider themselves ‘disabled’ Some people think we run a care home or day centre for people with disabilities Some of our services were established after the name changed to Disabled Living back in 1992 and are not directly linked to people who have a disability, such as our Bladder and Bowel UK service and training courses Some people think the name should be more positive

Throughout Disabled Living’s 120 year history we have had five name changes to reflect how the services have developed or to disassociated with a name that was not politically correct. Therefore, another name change will only associate with progression!
