This fine rug is from a small recognisable group of Perepedil prayer rugs, defined by the design and composition as seen here, presented on an ivory ground with a consistent border and guard stripe design shared by the group. A dated example similar design is held in the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest, inventory, 62-1229t. Soulis Auctions Marasali Prayer Rug Sold $10,000 December 2025 Whilst there is consensus, that prayer rugs from this small group were woven in Marasali in the Shirvan district, they do conform to the same structure as Shirvan rugs.

Suffice to say, this small group of prayer rugs were produced in Northeast Caucasus by weavers creating prized rugs of superior quality, design and using a comprehensive range of fabulous, harmonic jewel like colours.

Measures 59 x 47 inches; 4ft.11.x 3ft.11 inches 150 x 120cm.

Sound overall condition. Sides good, ends good, short flat woven ends present, slight loss, short fringe ends extant. Pile good with negligible wear.

The dark indigo mihrab with offset alternating rows of polychrome serrated botehs below an ivory keel-arch of angular stylised floral vine, dark indigo spandrels with alternating rows of boteh and small flora forms, a saffron continuous star inner guard border within an ivory border enclosing angular stylised floral vine.

This fine Northeast Caucasian prayer rug displays all the attributes of a small, significant recognisable group, defined as Marasali. This is the classic type of ‘black’ Marasali prayer rug with large boteh with their multifarious polychrome interiors and serrated frames set against the black field as if standing out like flashing lights, such a contrast is spectacular. The botehs on this group are invariably free standing, whereas weavings with other ground colours; (ivory, yellow, or red), almost always displaying a diamond lattice within which the botehs are usually arranged in chromatic patterns. Many examples from this significant group are dated, and although this rug is not dated bears notable similarities to dated known examples. See Christies, London, October 16th, 1997, lot 43. This published rug was dated AH 1274/1857 AD. The most well known example from this defined group, and arguably the best known of this type is in the Textile Museum, Washington DC., formerly in the Jerome a Straka collection (Straka, Jerome A., and Mackie, Louise, W., The Oriental Rug Collection of Jerome and Mary Jane Straka, New York, 1978, no.102, p.104-105 and cover). This rug similarly has alternating facing rows of well- spaced polychrome boteh and the angular boteh vine border. These features particular apply to earlier examples from this group. An even earlier example dated AH 1254/1838/39 AD is published by Herrmann, (Eberhart; Asiatische Teppich und Textilkunst, Band 4, Munich, 1992, p. 108-109, pl. 48). In the later examples the boteh become more crowded, angular and the boteh start to face the same direction. This more crowded rendering can be seen in a dated example, 1870, which was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, December 15, 1994, lot 89.

Soulis Auctions Lot 322 December 5th 2020: A Rare Published Joshegan Silk Prayer Rug Circa 1800 Sold $30,000 to a German Collector The pictorial field with a formal garden supporting a fountain and linked flower head lattice adorned with cypress trees before a palace below a shah emblem and peacock feathers, supported by two Simurgh and two exotic birds and sun spandrels, all within a blue border enclosing continuous cypress trees linked by meandering curvilinear and angular vines issuing flower heads and leaves. The various emblems include garden, palace and royal emblems along with Simurgh birds - the benevolent, mythical bird in Iranian mythology. All silk construction.

First published in 1913 and pictured on page 99 of The Practical Book of Oriental Rugs

by George Griffin Lewis, 1913, with the following caption: “Symbolic Persian Silk Rug Loaned By H. B. Claflin & CO.” (See page 316).

Measures 68.5 x 46 inches. Very fine condition. Clean and odor free with intact edges and ends, no damage, repair or stain. Examination with strong backlighting reveals a few very minor short separations as shown in the final images, there are NO issues with dry rot, fine and sturdy handle.

Soulis Auctions Lot 301 December 5th 2020: A Rare Desirable 18th Century Northwest Persian Garden Carpet Fragment Sold $15,000 to a British Collector The wool on cotton example of a ‘Garden’ carpet defined by the pattern format with columns of rectangular reserves enclosing flora forms, this rug is one of only a handful known and published in this design which is based on a Persian tradition dating back to the early 17th Century. The blue paneled field with six columns of rectangular reserves displays a variety of plants, each framed by an ivory border enclosing continuous red meandering dart vines and is likely from a larger carpet. It now is framed by an added red border enclosing continuous rosettes and diagonally orientated palmettes, linked by angular vines issuing sets of leaves of Caucasian origin, not original to the Garden carpet field. The Garden carpet fragment is consistent with Azerbaijan origin and presents a particularly good example of the genre with its fine drawing, execution and saturated colors.

Measures 77 x 53 inches. Very good condition, noting wear and the replacement border.

Soulis Auctions Lot 109 February 24th 2024: A Rare Desirable 18th Century Northwest Persian Garden Carpet Fragment Sold $12,000 The elegant field design with lobed floral vase issuing a large central cypress filled with ascending herati designs and a smaller central cypress in ivory surrounded by intricate and active designs of stylized florals and foliates with palmette meander, the rich dark blue field having jewel-tone foliate meander and interspersed blossoms is framed by a wide robust border with dynamic ascending flowering plant form on saffron ground in rich saturated jewel-tone colors overall. This exceptional Persian village weaving created in the middle period of the 19th century. With wide main border being flanked only by a narrow inner guard stripe is unusual and impactful. And the wool is top quality, making the well preserved and well saturated hue of the saffron yellow border a bold and effective frame that highlights the strength of the central design. Although random, the area of abrash provides depth to the overall impression of the rug, providing a unique attribute.

Illustrated on page 39 of O’Bannon, George. Oriental Rugs: The Collector’s Guide to Selecting, Identifying, and Enjoying New and Vintage Oriental Rugs. Courage Books, 1995. O’Bannon captions the rug as follows, “Few village prayer rugs equal city rugs in sophistication of design, color complexity, and design originality. This one surpasses most of them on all these levels.

The wide single main border in yellow is unique. The cypress tree, composed of the herati border pattern is reconciled perfectly, and the color balance is ideal.”

Measures 80 x 54 inches. Very good intact condition, complete ends and sides. No major issues of damage or repair, one small old amateur repair, small areas of very minor mothing.

Soulis Auctions Lot 73 December 14th 2025: A Fine and Rare Late 19th Century Kazak Rug Sold $6,000 The dark blue field with an allover design of scattered hooked polychrome medallions, stepped and shield palmettes, supported by flower heads, surrounded by a red and blue medacyl reciprocal border.

A fascinating unique rug defined by the presence of various stylised flora form of varying sizes scattered randomly throughout the main field. There is no sense of order or formality but the overall visual effect is impressive, compounded by the saturated dyes and the harmonic application of colours. Formality is restored by the presence of the finely drawn red and blue reciprocal border, which, in itself is unusual since this frequently seen style of border is normally applied as narrow secondary guard borders in Caucasian rugs. It is seen as a main border from time to time in rugs woven in East Turkestan. Measures approximately 95 x 46 inches; 7ft.11 inches x 3ft.10in; 241 x 117cm.

Sound overall condition. Sides good, ends good, short fringe ends extant. Soft lustrous wool pile good, negligible wear. See pictures.

Measures approximately 102 x 44 inches; 8ft.6inches. x 3ft.8in; 260 x 112cm.

Pile overall good, negligible wear, soft lustrous wool quality, some natural corrosion to charcoal outlining. Sides good. The bottom end shows a block of red wefted construction which appears to be original, and not a reweave, some later overcasting. Ends good, short warp fringes extant. Would enhance with professional cleaning to accentuate the colours and wool quality.

Soulis Auctions Lot 133 December 14th 2025: A Fine Rare Moghan Rug, Last Quarter of the 19th Century Sold $4,000 The ivory field with two columns of six hooked and stepped polychrome medallions above a diagonal banded hooked square filled base, and similar narrower upper band, within an ivory border enclosing continuous double rams horn hooked squares, (kochanak).

This is a rare Moghan rug with the characteristic ‘Memling’ guls together with the kochanak , or double rams horn border is a rare combination, with only a few known examples. See HALI 85, p.47, Moghan, Rippon Boswell, 24 May, 1997, lot 98., and a published example in Benardout, Raymond, Woven Stars, p.12 (catalogued as Akstafa).

The presence of the diagonal stripes at each end is enhanced uniqueness.

Measures approximately 92 x 42 inches; 7ft.8 inches x 3ft.6in; 234 x 107cm.

Sides good, ends good, short fringes present , pile mostly good, close cropped wool.

Some even wear, not extensive, some natural corrosion to black outlines. Sound overall condition.
