Mikes letter Welcome to this weeks edition of Direct Local and what a roller coater of a few days we had! Where shall we begin, lets start with the government u turn in the exam results. Isn’t is funny how once the government was put under massive pressure by the teachers and student of pretty much all the schools and colleges in the country to amend the algorithm that created so many incorrect exam results, that within a matter of days decided that all the time and money that was spent on the dam software was pointless and reverted to the teachers decision. And rightly so as they know their students abilities better than any computer. Which leads me on to what other algorithms they have concocted over the last few month are incorrect too and here’s a thought could they have got Covid-19 all wrong too right from the start? I’d love to here your thoughts on this whole subject and I do apologies now if I am out of order in any way. As always my contact details are on the left.

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity unveil new critical care car to reach more critically ill patients Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) unveiled a new critical care car this week, which will allow them to reach more critically ill patients across the region.
The new vehicles will enable our team to negotiate tougher terrain and drive safely in challenging weather conditions to reach patients quickly and safely, particularly in rural areas.”
The charity’s emergency crew respond to those in need by critical care cars, as well as their helicopter, both carrying lifesaving medical equipment on board, including ventilators and advanced drugs that are not carried on a land ambulance.
The new model, a Skoda Kodiaq, has been modified to meet the full requirements of the air ambulance’s Specialist Paramedics and Critical Care Doctors. The vehicle has been specially converted to carry all the lifesaving medical kit that the crew bring to their patients. To convert and fully kit out a vehicle to be a critical care car costs £64,000.
GWAAC’s crew are called to the most seriously ill or injured patients across the region, and their specialist skills enable them to perform hospital level emergency care at the scene, giving the patient the best possible chance of a positive outcome.
This new car will be one of three vehicles to join GWAAC’s fleet, updating the current models that the service uses, after the charity successfully bid for a one-off Government grant from the Department of Health and Social Care last year to In 2019, they received over 2,000 call-outs to those purchase the much needed new cars. in urgent need, of which over two thirds were responded to by critical care car. Peperonata pasta
Ingredients 1 orange or red pepper
Method
2 tbsp olive oil
Put 1 orange or red pepper, sliced, in a large nonstick frying pan with 2 tbsp Co-op olive oil and cover
1 red onion
Cook gently for 15 mins, shaking the pan occasionally
100g cherry tomatoes (about 12) 2 garlic cloves 80g Penne pasta 1 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tbsp chopped capers
Stir in 1 red onion, sliced, 100g Co-op cherry tomatoes (about 12), halved, and 2 garlic cloves, crushed; cover again Stir now and then while cooking 80g Co-op penne pasta according to the pack instructions Drain, reserving a mug full of the water Stir 1 tbsp Co-op red wine vinegar and 1 tbsp chopped capers into the pepper pan, increase the heat and cook for 1 min, lid off
1 tbsp grated parmesan wedge
Stir in 1 tbsp grated Co-op parmesan wedge and a little cooking water
1 tbsp chopped parsley and extra parmesan
Toss the pasta and sauce together Sprinkle with 1 tbsp chopped Co-op parsley and extra parmesan to serve

BIG ENERGY FIRMS LOSING OUT IN ENERGY EXODUS
The Big 6 Energy suppliers have lost more than 400,000 customers since June 1st As the UK falls into recession there has been a large increase in the number of households switching away from the Big Six energy providers in order to save on their bills, according to Nailsea, Bristol-based auto-switching specialists Flipper. “Nearly 1,000,000 people have switched energy supplier since June 1 and more than 400,000 of those moved away from the Big Six energy firms that dominate the market,” said Mark Gutteridge, CEO of auto-switching website Flipper. “This is an increase of 25% compared to the same time last year, while the number of people switching back to a large supplier has fallen by 32%”.
They saw customers numbers drop dramatically and have lost more than 8 MILLION households to the new entrants over the past 5 years. Flipper are supporting thousands of households across the UK by helping them find the best energy deal for their needs and while saving money remains the major factor, being with a supplier that offers great service or being on a green energy tariff are also important for many customers. “A typical household can save around £330 a year by moving from a Standard tariff with a Big 6 supplier to a new deal with a really good mid-size supplier.” Unlike other auto-switching or comparison sites Flipper is independent and takes no commission or referral fees, meaning it can “flip” its members to any energy provider based on price, customer service and value for money. The afternoon package is from 2pm to 5.30pm providing over three hours to say goodbye with a service and the use of the reception rooms. This includes a burial plot with a simple marker and costs £4,495.

Bristol hotels reach 30% occupancy in August Hotels in Bristol are operating at around one-third of their potential occupancy rates as they re-open following the Covid-19 lockdown. The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA), which represents 40 establishments, says it expects them all to have re-opened by the end of the first week of September. One of the latest to start welcoming guests back through its doors is the Bristol Hotel in Prince Street, which re-opened on Monday (August 17). General Manager Mark Payne said: “We are thrilled to have opened our doors again; having been closed for almost four months has been devastating for our team. “While we are aware that business levels are greatly reduced for 2020, re-opening has given everyone a great boost, and the positivity and spirit that the team has returned to work with gives me great confidence that we will continue to deliver exceptional guest experiences in a safe environment.” He said: “Guests typically are a little apprehensive coming into the hotel, but once checked-in, they quickly become accustomed to the new procedures and processes, and feedback across the board has been that they feel safe and are glad they made the effort to travel.”
The Bristol Hotel is one of 40 establishments which belong to the Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA), which says it expects all its members to be open again by the end of the first week of September. But while hotels are delighted to be able to open again – and the feedback from guests is positive – the BHA is warning that the industry is still in crisis. Raphael Herzog, BHA chair, said: “We are grateful to the Government for supporting us in some key ways in recent months, such as the furlough scheme for employees, which is currently due to run until October. “We have also seen VAT reduced to five percent until the end of this year, Business rates cut for this fiscal year, and the Eat Out To Help Out scheme this month; these measures have all been a massive benefit to our businesses. “But there are huge fears within the industry for what happens when they end, or if we get a localised lock-down, as we have seen recently in other areas, like Leicester. “The government support will need to be extended to negate huge potential job losses across the sector. “While most hotels have re-opened, with the others opening soon, regrettably it has not been viable for some of them to do so with the same pre-Covid staffing levels.” He added that the restriction on gatherings to no more than 30 people has “decimated” wedding and conference bookings, which provide a vital source of income to many hotels. However, in the longer-term, bookings for 2021 suggest they will at least match the 2019 levels, as life slowly returns to pre-Covid ways. Mr Herzog said: “The Government needs to continue with the support they have been giving so far, so that business can have clarity and be able to make longer-term decisions, particularly around staffing.

Vaping teens and young adults up to seven times more likely to contract COVID-19, study finds Teenagers and young adults who vape may be up to seven times more likely to catch coronavirus, a study has found. Researchers, who surveyed 4,351 Americans aged 13-24 years in May, found those who had used both e-cigarettes and cigarettes were seven times more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19. Those who had used both cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the previous 30 days were 4.7 times more likely to experience symptoms of the illness compared with those who never smoked or vaped. Among people tested for coronavirus, those who used just e-cigarettes were five times more likely to test positive for the disease. Study leader Shivani Mathur Gaiha said: "Young people may believe their age protects them from contracting the virus or that they will not experience symptoms of COVID-19, but the data show this isn't true among those who vape."

Those involved were asked if they had ever used vaping devices or combustible cigarettes, whether they had vaped or smoked in the past 30 days, and if they had experienced coronavirus symptoms, been tested for it or been diagnosed with the disease. The results of the study by the Stanford University School of Medicine were published in the Journal of Adolescent Health last Tuesday. Researchers pointed out that the study does not prove vaping causes coronavirus but that it involves the repeated touching of hands to the mouth and face, which is associated with the spread of the illness. In addition, vapers’ lungs may have been damaged by the nicotine and other chemicals in e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes, the team said. The researchers hope their findings will prompt the government to effectively regulate e-cigarettes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Golf club manager, Andrew Ryan, said: “There are obviously many benefits to being a member of a golf club, but the only slight issue is that you end up playing the same course week in, week out. We wanted to create something that gives golfers the chance to experience something a little different and become a member of a second club. “An hour is probably a little too far for a primary golf membership, but, with the option to play one of the best courses in the region in one of the prettiest parts of the UK up to 24 times a year, we feel our Country Membership gives golfers the perfect escape from their everyday golf and a chance to test their game, while enjoying the host of perks that being a member at The Manor House brings.”
Originally built in 1992, the award-winning course was re-launched in July 2006, after it was lengthened and re-sequenced with new 'Tiger Tees' – making it a must for all category one and two golfers. ROYAL COLLEGE FINDINGS REASSURE PARENTS-TO-BE Guidance issued this month by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) offers some reassurance to expectant mothers that Coronavirus may not represent a significant risk to them or their unborn child, has been welcomed by the team at the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM). The report published at the end of July by the Royal College states: “All available evidence suggests that pregnant women are at no greater risk of becoming seriously unwell than other healthy adults if they develop coronavirus. The large majority of pregnant women experience only mild or moderate symptoms.” Further reassurance appears on the official NHS website, which claims there is no evidence Coronavirus causes miscarriage or affects the development of a baby in the womb. Fertility expert Valentine Akande, who heads the team at BCRM, said today: “For those would-be parents who endured the agony of their assisted fertility treatments being put on hold for over two months during lock-down, this is reassuring news.
“Of course fertility clinics such as ours have changed certain practices in order to comply with current guidelines to minimise risks to patients and staff.
