So lets all get pissed then shall we? Or so it seems as we move in to further lockdown measures being relaxed this weekend meaning that we can all enjoy a cold beer down our local drinking hole. Just remember to pre-book your drinking slot as pubs are moving towards booking online in advance of your session. Personally I can not wait to get my noggin cut this weekend as my hair is getting stupidly out of hand after months of it going out of control. Some say I look like Barry Gibb of the iconic 70s group The Bee Gees either way its time for a short back and sides I think. It was such a shame to see a local lockdown come in to force this week as Leicester locked their doors once more, but stupidly allowing people to travel outside the city to shop. I can see this becoming a trend for the rest or the year as we persistently choose to take the piss with the rules that Boris and his team monkeys layout. Finally I would like to thank all those that took part in our last competition to win £250. As it was such a great success in generating more local subscribers we’ve only gone and done it again with a bigger prize fund up for grabs.

The biggest breakthrough yet' is unveiled It is the first time in about two weeks North Bristol NHS Trust - which covers Southmead Hospital - has reported a patient dying after contracting Covid-19, bringing the total to 118. While the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, which runs the BRI and Weston General Hospital, reported no new deaths from Monday 15th . The total stands at 142. Public Health England's figures published at 4.01pm yesterday June 16th show Bristol has one further confirmed case of the deadly virus, bringing the city's total to 720. Meanwhile, North Somerset's cases has remained at 482 since last Friday. And both Bath and North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have not seen an increase for a week (June 9), with the number of cases in these areas standing at 237 and 406 respectively.

The Office for National Statistics released figures this week showing the UK's death toll now stands at 53,000. This number is higher than the government's as the authority include all deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.While PHE's figures show there has been 41,969 coronavirus-related deaths across the UK after 233 more were recorded this week. This is one of the largest daily increases reported in more than a 7 days. The figures came on the same day Boris Johnson hailed a new drug as the “biggest breakthrough yet� in the fight against the virus. And the PM vowed the drug will be available on the NHS and the government has "taken steps" to ensure the country has enough supplies for a second peak. Results of UK trials showed dexamethasone, which is used to reduce inflammation in other diseases such as arthritis, reduced death rates by around a third among the most severely ill of COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital.

Fling the doors open to the garden and head outside! Summer is here and what better way to spend your free time than being outside and enjoying your beautiful flower filled garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of bloom. Make sure you keep new plants well hydrated to get them through those long, hot days and hoe off those pesky weeds, which can thrive in the sunshine. Although this still can be a busy time in the garden, don’t forget to find the time to sit back and relax so that you can enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in to achieve your beautiful display.
The essential gardening jobs for July FEED, WEED, AND DEADHEAD Adding a liquid feed to your weekly watering regime will give a much needed boost to hanging baskets, container and borders helping them to produce more flowers and, in some cases encouraging a second flourish of flowers late in the season. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials will also benefit from regular deadheading.
With Hanging baskets a bit of common sense goes a long way. Try lifting a container or basket. Does if feel light or under watered? How does the compost look? Is it pale and shrunken away from the sides? Dig into the compost with your fingers. Does it feel dry? It should be moist but not dripping wet. During prolonged dry spells, water at least once a day.

SPEND SOME LAZY HOURS IN THE GARDEN
How should you plant them? Plant in full sun, with very well drained soil, and water well when it’s dry. Trim in the spring to maintain shape and deadhead once the flowers start to fade.
A member of the sage family. Salvias are diverse group of plants ranging from annuals to herbaceous perennials and herbs Why should you plant them? With flowers that are popular with wildlife, they not only deliver colour and fragrance but are also great at attracting bees and butterflies. Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a great show from June through much of the summer and in to autumn.
This will prolong the flowering period making the garden more attractive and will also prevent the plants from putting their energy in to seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. Don’t forget to keep weeds down they steal vital moisture and nutrients. Kill them by regularly hoeing borders and vegetable patches. Larger weeds should be dug out or pulled up by hand.
After all your hard work, enjoy the sunshine and laze in your garden.

Covid-19 Memorial Garden to be created at Westerleigh Crematorium A memorial garden is to be created at Westerleigh Crematorium, near Bristol, as a tranquil place where people can come to remember loved ones who died during the Covid-19 pandemic and pay tribute to those who sacrificed so much to help others who were sick, isolated or vulnerable. The memorial garden is one of 34 to be created across England, Scotland and Wales by Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest independent owner-operator of crematoria and cemeteries. It will be beautifully landscaped with colourful, seasonal planting making up a rainbow – which, for many, has been a symbol of hope. The focal point will be a stone memorial individually carved by Westerleigh’s highly skilled stonemasons. Roger Mclaughlan, Chief Executive of Westerleigh Group, explained: “Over the centuries, people have commemorated significant, life-changing events by creating memorials to honour those who have died. We wanted to do something similar to acknowledge the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the local communities we serve. “Our local crematoria and cemeteries have very close links to the people who live and work in the surrounding areas. We are all too aware of the impact this pandemic has had and will continue to have on them, which is why we felt it was appropriate to create a permanent and lasting memorial in the grounds of our crematoria. It will be a special place where people can come to remember and reflect, and to give thanks to the wonderful way that the NHS, key workers and whole communities pulled together during this crisis. “We hope these memorial gardens will be well received and as we move forward, we want our communities to join us in our plans and help to shape them. The gardens will be a permanent memorial of these times for future generations.” Work is expected to begin on the stone memorials in the Autumn with garden landscaping taking place in early Spring 2021, shortly before the memorial gardens are opened. More details will be revealed over the coming months.

Young South Glos couple follow family footsteps with first foray into home ownership
A young teacher and her partner have decided to return to her family roots by buying their first house in the village where both her mum and grandmother grew up. Abbie Evans aged 24 and her partner Jed Sheppard, also 24, have bought a home in Coalpit Heath using the Government's Help to Buy scheme and will be moving to their three-bedroom Maidstone home at Barratt Homes' Blackberry Park later this year. "My nan lived in Coalpit Heath, and my mum grew up here - so I have lots of fond memories of my childhood locally," explains Abbie. "It seems like a lovely area to live in. It's not too busy and is quite villagey but we still have access to lots of things and good links to Bristol city centre. "We've had fantastic support from the Barratt team, offering us advice and guidance every step of the way. It's thanks to their help, and the support though Help to Buy, that we're able to get on the property ladder. We can't wait to move in." Help to Buy is a Government scheme available on new-build homes which enables buyers to become owners with just a five percent deposit of the value of their new home, up to a value of ÂŁ600,000. The current scheme is set to change next April, becoming open only to first time buyers and for homes up to ÂŁ349,000 in the South West region.

There has been a surge in interest from buyers and a strong rise in sales in Bristol and South Gloucestershire over the past few weeks, after the company began to gear up their construction and sales operations following the Covid-19 lockdown. Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) have received a grant of over £8,000 from The Lions Clubs International Foundation to enable them to purchase vital equipment to keep both crew and patients safe during COVID-19. The foundation’s grant has enabled the frontline charity to purchase a thermal screening system which will screen all crew, staff and visitors to the base for a fever, enabling them to quickly identify and isolate anyone displaying a fever and prevent them being in contact with crew or patients. The grant has also paid for an iPad for crews to use to access guidelines and policies whilst on duty – which will adhere to infection control processes so as to minimise risk of contamination. Lions Clubs’ District Governor for Central and West, Ian Gott, said “We know that air ambulance charities have been busier than ever during the coronavirus pandemic. They’ve faced considerable extra – unbudgeted – day to day costs – at the same time as lockdown has affected fund-raising. Now, thanks to an emergency COVID-19 relief grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation, we can provide immediate support for this emergency service that touches lives in all our local communities.”

GWAAC provides the critical care and air ambulance services across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire. Despite the lockdown, their crew of Specialist Paramedics and Critical Care Doctors are still right here and ready to respond to those in urgent need across the region. As well as their ‘day job’ - responding to accidents, traumatic incidents and medical emergencies – GWAAC have been and continue to support the COVID-19 response to help reduce the pressure on the NHS and other public services. National organisation, Air Ambulances UK, worked closely with the Lions Club International Foundation to obtain £160,000 of funding, which has supplied equipment to many air ambulances across the UK in order to help them remain safe in the battle against the virus. Chief Executive of GWAAC, Anna Perry, said: “The grant we have received will make a huge difference to our crew who are working tirelessly to support our local communities on the frontline – in day to day operations, and in response to COVID-19. 125g Unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 100g Icing sugar 1 Co-op British free range egg 1 tsp vanilla essence 200g Plain flour 300g British strawberries, sliced 2 tbsp chopped basil 40g Caster sugar 150ml Double cream, whipped

Preheat the oven 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4 and For the base: grease a nonstick 17cm x 27cm baking tin 25g Unsalted butter Cream the butter and icing sugar together until light and creamy, then beat the egg and 2 Digestive biscuits, crushed vanilla together 3 Ginger nut biscuits, crushed Stir the egg mixture and flour alternately, a little atFor a the topping: time, into the creamed butter, until 90g Soft cheese fully combined 75ml Double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar Spread as evenly as you can (it will be sticky) over the base of the tin and bake for 15-18 mins, until 1/2 tbsp Strawberry jam golden Remove from the oven and, while still warm, cut lengthways down the middle, then allow to cool fully Put 100g of the strawberries in a saucepan, along with the basil, caster sugar and 100ml cold water, cook, stirring until the sugar has dissolved Bring to the boil and cook for 4-5 mins, until reduced and syrupy, then strain through a sieve, reserving the syrup

Melt the butter and mix with the crushed digestives and ginger nut biscuits Press into the base of two ramekins, and place in the fridge to chill Meanwhile, in a large bowl, beat the soft cheese, double cream, icing sugar and strawberry jam, until thickened

Bristol City Centre BID backed campaign warns of business collapse and mass redundancies #RaiseTheBar campaign calls for threshold for vital grant to be raised to protect jobs when furlough scheme ends The government's furlough scheme is concealing the true picture of unemployment in Bristol, according to the Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) and greater support must be given to at risk retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. The Bristol City Centre BID, along with BARBIE, the Bristol Association of Restaurants, Bars and Independent Establishments, are backing a nationwide campaign calling on government to raise the threshold for its Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grant (RHLG). Without this, they warn, hundreds of Bristol employees who have been protected by the Coronavirus Job Retention (furlough) Scheme could find no business and therefore no job to return to when the scheme ends.
These include popular, successful venues in the city centre such as the Milk Thistle on Colston Avenue and No 1 Harbourside, which have also backed the campaign along with dozens of others. Bristol City Centre BID and the #RaiseTheBar campaign, set up by Croydon BID (Business Improvement District) are calling on central government to expand the rateable value threshold for eligible businesses to access the £25,000 grant from £51,000 to £150,000. Access to this support, they argue, will be the difference between survival and bankruptcy for thousands of High Street businesses in Bristol and across the UK.

We are currently dealing with 14 of such cases that between them employ over 200 staff. Urgent intervention and support is required to stop the industry collapsing and that support is required now, not in 3 months time." Amy Devenish, Owner of The Gloucester Old Spot, Bristol commented: "Simply because a business has a rateable value set at a certain level by the council, It should not immediately assume that the business is any better able to survive a crisis like this. A sliding scale of grants would have been a much fairer solution."
Kwan Voong, Owner, Toro Noodle Bar added: "There are a huge number of Bristol businesses over the £51k RV cap in Bristol and we need urgent support as has been provided by councils such as Camden, Hackney and Lambeth who are using their additional discretionary grants to support the hospitality sector." Moment of remembrance #Thankyoutogether – – Saturday 4 July Sunday 5 July at 5pm Saturday 4 July, the day before the birthday, will be a moment of remembrance and reflection for those we have lost during the pandemic. This is a chance for the nation to come together and pay our respects. It is being led by the Together Coalition and we are asking people to place a light in their window or on their doorstep. As part of this collective memorial, and as a mark of respect and tribute to NHS staff, key workers and everyone who has played their part during the pandemic, iconic landmarks including the London Eye, Royal Albert Hall, Blackpool Tower and Wembley Arch will be illuminated in blue. NHS England are calling on sports stadiums, bridges, castles, monuments, conference venues and landmarks to join in lighting up our skylines and cities on the evening of 4 July. Thank you to the #MakeitBlue Collective who are supporting them as part of their #LightItBlue campaign. The campaign was created by the events and entertainment industry to show a united display of gratitude for health and key workers. Have a look at this list of the buildings that we have been told will be lit up. We will update the list as we hear about more, so please check back. They are also encouraging people to take photos and share them via social media using the hashtags #LightItBlue and #ThankYouTogether.

Sunday 5 July 1948 was the day the NHS was founded and the whole country is invited to come together at 5pm to applaud all those who have been helping us through the pandemic and recognise the vital community connections that continue to support us all. Broadcasters will suspend normal transmissions at 5pm. Everybody will be encouraged to stop what they’re doing and join with others (following social distancing advice of course) in their streets or neighbourhoods to applaud not just the NHS and other key workers but all those who have volunteered or helped keep services and community networks going. Following the applause, we hope people will enjoy a drink or a cup of tea and reflect with family, friends and neighbours on the bonds that have sustained us in recent months and will continue to do so.

CHANGE OF HANDS FOR BRIGHT SPARKS PRE-SCHOOLS The Bright Sparks pre-schools in Downend and Stoke Lodge have changed hands and plans to make the settings more flexible for local families have been revealed. The pre-schools, which are located within the grounds of Stanbridge Primary School and Stoke Lodge Primary School, will be run by new Managing Director Vicky Ashbolt, an expert in nursery childcare, who plans to open the settings up to more age groups and extend opening hours. Taking over from previous owner Karen Llewellyn, Vicky intends to extend the opening hours to 8am-6pm to help working parents. The settings will cater for children from three-months to five-years and will be available year-round instead of just during term times. Ms Ashbolt, who has worked for many years as a Director at the locally-based Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-School group, said: “Bright Sparks will continue to be an independent pre-school operator and retain its independent character. “We will build on the organisation's strengths, retain the existing staff, develop and encourage talent and continue Karen's legacy.” Both nurseries are currently still operating under their existing offerings but work is taking place to to begin accepting children of all ages for longer days. There are also plans to be able to provide hot meals, cooked on site for the children. Vicky continued: “We hope to better meet the needs of local working families and their children with our new plans. The extended opening hours will benefit working parents, as will the year-round provision. “I would like to thank Karen for her hard work and achievements. Bright Sparks is an important contributor to the local community; it has played a key role in the lives of thousands of young children and given employment to hundreds of local workers. We look forward to steering the organisation during this next phase of its development.”

BEST ENERGY DEALS BACK AT 2016 PRICES
It’s four years since the Brexit vote was held on June 23, 2016 and while a huge amount has changed across Britain since then, household gas and electricity prices are now back at the same level, say industry experts.
“We’re seeing suppliers launching new tariffs offering the lowest prices in years and anyone who has not changed their energy provider this year needs to check immediately to see if they can save money.
While the price of shopping has risen by an average of 11 per cent, house prices by nine per cent, and rail fares by 10 per cent, the cost of the best value household fuel bills - which had risen until November 2018 – are now back at summer 2016 prices.
“Even people on a fixed tariff may find it is more cost effective to pay any exit fees and move to a cheaper tariff while prices are low.
The trend means people who last changed their gas and electricity deal in 2018 are now missing out on huge savings due to the recent plunge in energy prices. “Many people believe that energy costs just go up and up, but that hasn’t been the case over the last six-12 months,” said Mark Gutteridge, managing director of auto-switching service Flipper, which seeks out the cheapest deals for its members. “The price of the cheapest duel fuel deal increased by 30 per cent between Summer 2016 and November 2018 adding more than £200 per year to bills, but since then energy prices have been falling, and following a big drop over the past few months, the best deals available now cost the same as four years ago.

“Anyone who has recently switched will be enjoying much lower bills, but those households who are still on the same deal they were 12 months ago, are now paying hundreds of pounds more than they should be. The average household can save nearly £370 by moving from a supplier’s standard tariff to one of the best deals currently available.” Flipper is the UK’s first auto-energy switcher and prides itself on being truly independent as it does not take commission-based referrals from any of the energy providers. The site offers a subscription service and manages bills on behalf of its members using an algorithm to scan the market to find energy deals.
