Welcome to this months magazine, as we enter half way through the year what have you achieved so far? During lockdown it seems a lot of DIY work has been done in the garden and in the our homes that has probably been put off for years. As summer approaches we will probably be spending more time than ever at home in our gardens with barbeques and sun bathing so why not make it the best it can be. However, if you’re like me and not a big fan of the sunshine, especially when is scorching hot outside then your inner sanctum that’s your home is going to be your best friend sat in front the TV with binge worthy box sets. Either way just enjoy the slower pace of life at the moment as before you know it we will be back to running around like headless chickens queuing up at shopping malls trying to get the best deals. I suppose looking back on the lockdown we will all think how nice the simple life really is and want to return to the peace and quiet all over again without the Draconian lockdown measures and the dreaded virus that is Covid-19. On that note please stay alert this month and safe lives by not venturing out to the hot spots around Bristol to grab those rays.

STRANDED BABIES HIGHLIGHT NEED FOR UK LAW REFORM A specialist in modern family law says current UK surrogacy laws need a major reform in light of the news that dozens of babies are stranded abroad after being born to surrogate mothers during the coronavirus crisis. Sarah Wood-Heath says the heartbreaking reality that intended parents are unable to travel to their newborn babies in other countries, highlights how the outdated laws in the UK are letting parents down. Sarah, a partner at national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP, said: “It is a sad fact that a lot of people who are trying to start a family via a surrogate in this country feel like they have no choice but to go abroad to complete the process. “In the UK it is very difficult to find a surrogate outside of your family and friendship group as commercial surrogacy arrangements are not legal. This means that you cannot pay someone to be your surrogate (only reasonable expenses). It also means you are unable to advertise that you are looking for a surrogate and a surrogate is unable to advertise themselves. “There is also no binding contract between the surrogate and the intended parents which leads to a lot of unnecessary anxiety and uncertainty on both sides. Furthermore, the surrogate (and her partner) are recognised as the legal parents of the child until the intended parents obtain a parental order from the Court following the birth. “For those who feel uncomfortable and vulnerable with the position in the UK or who don’t have a friend or family member willing to carry their baby the options are few and far between and so they look to foreign jurisdictions. In a lot of foreign countries the rules are more relaxed, they allow commercial surrogacy and some have an established legal process recognising the intended parents as the legal parents at birth.” The USA is a popular surrogacy hotspot as commercial surrogacy is legal in most states but the high cost of the process here means it is often prohibitive to intended parents. As a result countries like Ukraine have become increasingly popular, where treatment is more affordable but there are less regulations.

“There are advantages but also risks to choosing surrogacy abroad and it adds complications to an already difficult and stressful situation, not least having to obtain travel documents to get the baby home once it is born. I have had clients who have been stuck abroad for months after the birth of their child,” said Sarah. “Of course, nobody could foresee this current situation but it does bring into stark reality the existing concerns family lawyers have about both our system and the systems in other countries. “The Law Commission is currently reviewing our surrogacy laws which is a really welcome development and I hope that the system is updated to reflect modern family living and to help couples achieve their goals of starting a family as much as possible and make the path easier here in the UK. “We must remember that at the heart of this are parents who have usually been on a torrid and fraught journey of infertility to get to this point and who desperately want to grow their family. “The anxiety of the intended parents whose babies are thousands of miles away must be phenomenal so I hope that the government will step in soon and class their journeys as essential travel so the families can be united.” Sarah’s comments come after it was reported that over 50 babies are stranded at one Ukraine clinic and are now being cared for by nurses at a nearby hotel. MEMORIAL WOODLANDS MOVE TOWARDS LARGER FUNERAL SERVICES Bristol Memorial Woodlands is now able to offer larger scale funeral services depending on the number of households involved. Congregations of between 20 and 30 people can now be accommodated in the chapel and rooms at the woodland burial grounds near Alveston, just outside of Bristol, with careful planning to keep households separate. In keeping with the guidance, which is under constant review, Bristol Memorial Woodlands has been able to arrange for the required spacing to be possible in its chapel. The funeral directors, working with each family, are able to ensure that social distancing between different households can be maintained during services while allowing the maximum number of people to attend. Christopher Baker, who founded Bristol Memorial Woodlands, where a woodland nature reserve is being created with trees planted in memory of those buried there, said: “For some weeks now we have been restricted to a maximum of 10 people at a funeral but the relaxing of regulations and with planning over seating we can now accommodate between 20 and 30 people, depending on the households involved. “Throughout the pandemic we have been offering people an opportunity to come back later in the year to have a memorial service after a small-scale burial service. The time is not yet right for us to start booking those services but we can offer some comfort to those organising a funeral now.

“It has been terribly distressing for families not being able to say goodbye properly to their loved ones. In many parts of the country there are still funerals taking place with nobody in attendance and with churches closed and many crematoria not permitting congregations to enter, others having restricted space and time slots, families need to find a place to grieve and say a proper goodbye. “The great comfort that we can offer is that the woodlands will be here for all time, managed by our charitable trust, so people will be able to come back in the future, gather under the trees near their loved one, picnic and remember lives well lived.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands contains dedicated Muslim and Jewish burial grounds and are also supporting those communities through the current restrictions. Coronavirus: Split three-day week proposed to get UK economy out of COVID-19 crisis A split three-day week with workers separated into two different teams should be considered as part of the economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, a report has urged The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) has suggested firms arrange "A teams" and "B teams", typically working Monday to Wednesday or Thursday to Saturday. The idea is based on a similar arrangement in South Korea and would help enable social distancing at work and ease congestion on the roads, cycling infrastructure and public transport. A study suggested. It is thought workers would then have greater choice to combine their jobs with caring, learning, or volunteering and lead to a future of more flexible work for both employers and employees.
Is the crisis an opportunity for positive change in the country? May be a 12-month 'back to work' strategy to help businesses plan of a better future - which in turn creates a better future of work, building green infrastructure, and brings citizens and experts closer together. The study also speculated that over time, the 'team A' and 'team B' working could develop into a more permanent three-day week, while the negative income tax could become a basic income floor for citizens. These ideas and others will clearly be subject to debate, but it's vital we have new thinking to 'build back better' and address the challenges we face, from the climate emergency to mass economic insecurity. Marie Curie’s famous fundraising campaign goes virtual to recover devastated fundraising income Marie Curie’s famous Blooming Great Tea Party is going virtual this year and the charity needs Bristolian tea party hosts more than ever before to make up for the devastating effect the coronavirus crisis has had on the charity’s income. The end of life charity is calling on you to throw a Blooming Virtual Tea Party from home this summer. While staying indoors is the new normal, throwing a virtual tea party is a fun way to stay connected to the ones you love during this time and a great way to support nurses working on the frontline of the crisis.
“I’ve met their nurses before. They are inspiring, kind, caring and loving people who are currently caring for people at the end of their lives and keeping people out of hospital, helping the NHS cope with the Coronavirus crisis. Every last crumb of the money you raise will help people at the end of their lives. In people’s homes across the South West the charity is caring for people with terminal illnesses, as well as people with Covid-19, and is protecting the NHS by keeping patients away from hospital. However, as the charity has stepped up its support for the nation, its fundraising income has been devastated by the impact of lockdown measures – it had to cancel its Great Daffodil Appeal in March and closed all its charity shops shortly after (including shops in Whitchurch and on Gloucester Road). That is why the charity and its celebrity ambassador, Mel Giedroyc, are encouraging everyone to download Zoom, Skype or Houseparty and connect with friends and family while raising some money at the same time. Cake lover and tea party extraordinaire, Mel Giedroyc says: “You can bake it, fake it, brew it or stew it – whatever your cup of tea, Marie Curie’s Blooming Great Tea Party is going ‘virtual’ this year and it’s a simple way to keep in touch with your chums, while raising money for a wonderful cause, which, I think you’ll agree, we all need right now". “Marie Curie needs to raise a massive £2.5million each week to care for the tens of thousands of people who need its nursing and hospice care. Coffee, Walnut Method: and Baileys cake Cake: 8oz butter or soft margarine 8oz caster sugar 8oz self-raising flour 4 eggs 1 tsp baking powder 1 tablespoon coffee essence 2oz chopped walnuts Filling: Âź pt fresh double cream And a good dash of baileys Topping: Glace icing made with approx. 4oz icing sugar and approx. 2 tablespoons of coffee essence Truffles and flaked almonds
Grease two 8� sandwich tins and line the base of each with greased baking parchment. Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the flour, baking powder and then eggs and coffee essence. Mix together and then add the chopped walnuts. Divide into two tins and bake for 25 mins on 180 oC/ Fan 160 oC/Gas 4 until well risen and golden brown. Whip cream until stands in soft peaks, gently mix in Baileys. When sponge is cold remove from tins and sandwich together with the cream mixture. For topping mix icing sugar with coffee essence to make a spreadable icing, make sure it is not too runny. Spread over the top of the cake and decorate with truffles and flaked almonds.

An 8-part series set between the events of Episode VI and VII, it follows a lone bounty hunter journeying from planet to planet in the hopes of protecting a vital asset. Meanwhile, over on Netflix, the long-awaited TV adaptation of Snowpiercer arrives. Set in the far future where humanity must keep moving to survive a frozen Earth, the lower classes will only stay satiated for so long. Then The Lovebirds has recently started streaming, following a romantic couple’s attempt to track down a murderer. Don’t discount the joys both Brit Box and Amazon Prime bring either. The former features old-school English classics like Doctor Who and Thunderbirds, while Prime is stacked with original TV shows like Upload and New Amsterdam to check out. Post Lockdown Transport
We wrote here a few weeks ago about our campaign to persuade the Labour mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, to come up with proposals to make walking and cycling safer during the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. Many cities across the UK and around the world had already established pop-up cycle lanes and temporarily widened pavements to aid social distancing but nothing was happening in Bristol. Following our successful campaign, we were pleased the mayor finally announced his plans for Bristol. However, we were disappointed by the lack of ambition and the length of time to deliver on the promises. In fact, the main idea, the pedestrianisation of the old city, is nothing new. While extremely welcome, this has been on the cards for many years. The mayor is simply hoping to use extra government funding to bring forward the completion of the scheme. As for the new suggestions, very little is likely to be ready until the end of summer. Other cities have got on and delivered infrastructure in a matter of days. Why is Bristol so slow?
We are also disappointed that once again Brislington has been overlooked. The mayor has largely concentrated on the centre of the city and Clifton, but completely ignored our part of Bristol. Prior to Lockdown, we were beset with some of the worst congestion and pollution in the city. It would be a travesty if that situation were allowed to return once lockdown is over. We believe that a few simple changes could quickly and easily improve life for Brislington residents now and in the future. One idea is to allow the Brislington Park and Ride buses to pick up and drop off en route to and from the centre, which would greatly increase overall passenger capacity and reduce waiting times on the A4 corridor. Another suggestion is to encourage commuters from outside Bristol to use the Park and Ride and then complete their journey by bike. Of course, cycling infrastructure on the Bath Road would need to be improved if we wanted to encourage more people to cycle. We could also end rat-running on minor residential streets by using planters to block through traffic. Unfortunately, the most obvious improvement, one that would be a game-changer for our area, has once again been rejected by the Labour administration.

As you may be aware, we have long campaigned for the Brislington Greenway, a green corridor and active travel route along the former Brislington Railway Line. Andrew presented our petition calling for the Greenway at Full Council back in December and we finally received an official response this week. Despite having well over 2,200 signatures from local residents, the Labour council has reiterated its commitment to build a major new road here instead. New roads mean more traffic, more congestion and more pollution. St Anne’s station bid When I stood for election in January this year, better public transport for the people of St Anne’s and the wider Brislington area was a key theme of my campaign. I had a lot of ideas on how things could be improved and, once elected, I set about trying to achieve as much as I could in the short time available to me before the scheduled elections in May 2020.
There is one piece of good news however. A part of my campaign was the promise to keep up the pressure on WECA, our West of England Combined Authority, to develop plans for the re-instatement of a railway station at St Anne’s Park. I am very pleased to announce that this week myself and our local MP for Bristol East, Kerry McCarthy, have submitted a first stage application to the government under their “Restoring Your Railway” programme to look at the feasibility of building a new station (the old one is long gone). If we are successful, the government will provide a grant of 75% of the costs for a full feasibility study to be carried out.
Sadly, a lot has happened since then, and very little of it good! The ferry service which I helped to organise between Netham Lock and the Centre has had to be cancelled indefinitely. The re-organisation of the 513/514 bus service which I persuaded the Council to undertake has also been put on hold. The future of public transport is a big unknown right now.

This is only the first stage. We know that St Anne’s part of the long-term ambitions for WECA but we want to bring that forward and make it a priority. If we succeed in this phase, there will be a full application process to be completed by the end of June, so the timescales are really tight, but we will do everything we can to try to bring this about for the people of Brislington, who are desperate for improved transport links at this time. Leading housebuilder partners with RSPB to give tips for wildlife watching in Bristol, Somerset & Gloucestershire as lockdown continues Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes have teamed up with long-term partner the RSPB to offer tips to people across Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset on bringing wildlife closer to home as the lockdown is eased but set to continue. With the majority of us remaining at home, combined with a dramatic reduction in road traffic, many people are discovering the amazing wildlife on our doorsteps, and how important our gardens, balconies and outdoor spaces are, particularly in urban areas. The RSPB, the UK's largest conservation charity, has worked with Barratt and David Wilson Homes to offer residents a practical guide to creating wildlife friendly areas, not only in gardens, but in smaller outdoor spots too, such as doorsteps, windowsills and balconies. The show homes at Ladden Garden Village, Yate, from Barratt and David Wilson Homes, have been given a Gold award by the RSPB for their wildlife-friendly gardens, along with Silver for Great Oldbury (David Wilson Homes), and Great Oldbury (Barratt Homes), Stonehouse and Bronze for Sunningend View, Gloucester. The Ladden Garden Village show home gardens include a hedgehog highway, bird boxes and baths, a bug hotel, lavender hedges for bees and butterflies and a raised pond with child-safe grid. Bringing Your Garden to Life, which has been shared with Barratt and David Wilson Homes customers across Bristol, Gloucestershire and So merset this week, outlines simple tips including:

Provide food - much of which comes from plants. Select plants rich in pollen and nectar such as lavender, native honeysuckle, wallflower and summer jasmine and offer a variety of shrubs, climbers, flowers, grass and trees

Provide water - the single most wildlife rich home you can offer in anything from an upturned dustbin lid or old sink to a bird bath or full-sized wildlife pond

Provide shelter - in the form of plants and shrubs but also log piles and nesting boxes for birds, bats, bees and hedgehogs. All can be bought readymade but the Barratt RSPB Garden Guide includes lots of advice on making your own

Create a wildflower meadow on a windowsill -flowers such as corn marigold, cornflower, corn cockle and poppy will provide food for beneficial insects as well as birds. They can be grown in tubs adding a splash of colour and a welcome wildlife rest-stop to even the smallest of spaces

Plant up seasonal hanging baskets and pots - choose plants that are attractive to wildlife and try to include some native varieties. Include some plants that flower early and late and insects will visit in spring and autumn as well as summer. Experiment with marigolds, verbena, fuchsias, heathers, dead-nettles, ivy and nasturtiums.

Your Garden In June
Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden.

The essential gardening jobs for June
Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.
A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mower blades if we have a drought.
Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.
Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sapsucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide.
How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser.
Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.
Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.
