So lets all get pissed then shall we? Or so it seems as we move in to further lockdown measures being relaxed this weekend meaning that we can all enjoy a cold beer down our local drinking hole. Just remember to pre-book your drinking slot as pubs are moving towards booking online in advance of your session. Personally I can not wait to get my noggin cut this weekend as my hair is getting stupidly out of hand after months of it going out of control. Some say I look like Barry Gibb of the iconic 70s group The Bee Gees either way its time for a short back and sides I think. It was such a shame to see a local lockdown come in to force this week as Leicester locked their doors once more, but stupidly allowing people to travel outside the city to shop. I can see this becoming a trend for the rest or the year as we persistently choose to take the piss with the rules that Boris and his team monkeys layout. Finally I would like to thank all those that took part in our last competition to win £250. As it was such a great success in generating more local subscribers we’ve only gone and done it again with a bigger prize fund up for grabs.

BEST ENERGY DEALS BACK AT 2016 PRICES
It’s four years since the Brexit vote was held on June 23, 2016 and while a huge amount has changed across Britain since then, household gas and electricity prices are now back at the same level, say industry experts.
“We’re seeing suppliers launching new tariffs offering the lowest prices in years and anyone who has not changed their energy provider this year needs to check immediately to see if they can save money.
While the price of shopping has risen by an average of 11 per cent, house prices by nine per cent, and rail fares by 10 per cent, the cost of the best value household fuel bills - which had risen until November 2018 – are now back at summer 2016 prices.
“Even people on a fixed tariff may find it is more cost effective to pay any exit fees and move to a cheaper tariff while prices are low.
The trend means people who last changed their gas and electricity deal in 2018 are now missing out on huge savings due to the recent plunge in energy prices. “Many people believe that energy costs just go up and up, but that hasn’t been the case over the last six-12 months,” said Mark Gutteridge, managing director of auto-switching service Flipper, which seeks out the cheapest deals for its members. “The price of the cheapest duel fuel deal increased by 30 per cent between Summer 2016 and November 2018 adding more than £200 per year to bills, but since then energy prices have been falling, and following a big drop over the past few months, the best deals available now cost the same as four years ago.
8
“Anyone who has recently switched will be enjoying much lower bills, but those households who are still on the same deal they were 12 months ago, are now paying hundreds of pounds more than they should be. The average household can save nearly £370 by moving from a supplier’s standard tariff to one of the best deals currently available.” Flipper is the UK’s first auto-energy switcher and prides itself on being truly independent as it does not take commission-based referrals from any of the energy providers. The site offers a subscription service and manages bills on behalf of its members using an algorithm to scan the market to find energy deals. Members join for free and only pay a set fee if savings of more than £50 can be found. Visit www.flipper.co.uk for more information.

Welcome to the council's coronavirus information and advice newsletter This month, the Prime Minister set out a series of ne changes to the lockdown measures in England from Saturday 4 July. These include:
1. From Monday 6 July, those who are ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ and currently shielding from coronavirus can:
•
Spend time outdoors (in a public outdoor space, private garden or uncovered yard or terrace) in a group of up to six people, including those from outside their household while following social distancing
• •
•
Reopening of pubs, restaurants and hairdressers provided they are ‘Covidsecure’ which means having special safety measures in place Reopening of hotels, campsites and other accommodation Two households will be able to meet up in any setting while following social distancing The reduction of social distancing to 1m plus, where 2m is not possible.
Other leisure facilities and attractions may also begin to reopen, if safe to do so including outdoor gyms and playgrounds, museums, places of worship, libraries and community centres. While we welcome these announcements, many businesses and council-run facilities will need to put in place special measures and that may take some time. Thank you for your continued patience. Although we welcome this positive step it is extremely important to continue to protect yourself by staying at home as much as possible and avoiding close contact with those from outside your home should you need to go outside, especially if you are clinically vulnerable. As Bristol begins to reopen again, we must try to avoid crowded public spaces where possible, especially if unable to practise social distancing. Washing your hands regularly, wearing face coverings, and maintaining your distance from others are all essential to help keep our regional ‘R’ number down and reduce risk of infection. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol
Form a ‘support bubble’ if they live alone or are a single parent with children, with one other household of any size; spending time inside each other’s homes, including overnight, while maintaining social distancing From Saturday 1 August, guidance on shielding will be fully relaxed, meaning those who are shielding will no longer be advised to shield. Those who need to work and are unable to do so from home will be able to return to their workplace, provided it is Covid-secure. 2. Support from the government will continue for those shielding until the end of July – including food packages and medicines. Priority food shopping delivery slots will also remain available from selected supermarkets, and will continue beyond the end of July for those already registered for support. Further advice for and guidance on shielding is available on the central Government website. If you’re in Bristol and need support getting essential foods, medicines and supplies, call the We Are Bristol support phone number for free on 0800 694 0184 (lines open 8:30am-5:00pm Mon-Fri) or email coronavirus@bristol.gov.uk.
Free early education for two Update on Government year olds shielding guidance and support If you’re the parent or carer of a two year old child available and receive certain benefits, you could be eligible to There are now plans to ease guidance for those who have been told they are ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’. This will happen in two stages.

During the coronavirus pandemic, we’re helping families who have experienced a sudden change in their work status or income. New virtual groups in place As a team of local Slimming World Consultants, in South Bristol, we ran our last physical groups back on March 15th. Since then we’ve worked together to rebuild the slimming community on a virtual platform. We know our groups bring people together in the heart of their communities; to support and inspire one another every week. In these anxious times, the community spirit and genuine care we offer has never been more important. We’ve had countless messages from members genuinely distressed at losing their group and their weight loss lifeline, missing the camaraderie each week, and desperately wanting to hang on to the changes they had already made towards a healthier, fitter lifestyle. Our current package includes access to a weekly virtual group using the video conferencing service Zoom. Each Slimming World Consultant hosts their group, members join from home so they continue to get support in making healthier food choices and finding new ways to stay active. The emphasis is very much on encouraging, building and staying in control of new healthy lifestyle habits when it might not be as easy as under normal circumstances – helping members find ways to make groceries go a bit further, easy ways to shop, cook and eat healthily at a time when access to food is changing.
Slimming World’s unique formula built on compassion, care and understanding brings a welcome bit of light in hard times, and is possibly more important now than ever before. All of this will be combined with ongoing use of social media, access to Slimming World’s app and member-only website Lifeline Online, which provides members with all the practical help they need, as well as advice about how to stay physically active and psychologically strong. We've done our very best to put new virtual groups in place - which gives our members the same practical help, caring support and friendship they’ve come to rely on, and give us as Consultants the means to sustain our livelihoods in these challenging times ahead. We're delighted that now in our second month of running our groups virtually we're able to offer new members the opportunity to join us as well. So whether you've been a member in the past or are entirely new to Slimming World, there’s never been a better time to join - Could this be an opportunity to use your time in lockdown to carve new healthy habits for you and your family. Brislington West Round-up BS4 Good Gardens
The annual BS4 Good Gardens competition is currently underway and this year, Andrew, a keen gardener himself, has volunteered to be one of the judges. Andrew said, ‘the Lockdown has been a real challenge for many gardeners as garden centres were shut for several weeks making it difficult to get plants and flowers. However, the standard is as high as ever and judging so many beautiful gardens has been an immensely enjoyable, albeit challenging task.’
Burnt-out Bike
Whilst visiting Stockwood open space recently, Jos and Andrew noticed a burnt-out bike on the grass. An eyesore and an obvious hazard, which Jos quickly reported to the council. We hope it gets removed soon.
Blocked Drains Brislington Litter Pick
Last Saturday we held our first Brislington community litter pick since the Lockdown started. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped clean up around the Whitby Road and Sand Hill area. We managed to amass quite a haul. We hope to hold another litter pick in the next few weeks.
14
You may have noticed that many drains in Brislington West are completely blocked. We’ve been reporting them to Bristol City Council for some time now and are pleased to see that they have finally been marked up ready to be unblocked. Andrew said, ‘after the recent heavy rain, it is even more important that the work is done as soon as possible’.
Brislington Pavements Maintenance Work
Across Brislington many of our pavements are currently being resurfaced using a process called slurry seal treatment. This is a thin layer on the top of the existing surface. There are two crews carrying out the work throughout the entire ward, which should take around a month to complete depending on the weather.
Arnos Vale Cemetery
One of the great joys of living in Brislington is having the unique and beautiful Arnos Vale Cemetery on our door step. Jos, who has been one of the trustees for the last four years, said, ‘it is such a great place to spend time, simply having a stroll or enjoying one of the many events that take place throughout the year. When I was asked to become a trustee, I jumped at the chance to be part of such a unique place’. Of course the site had to close during Lockdown, but as with all public spaces Arnos Vale is gradually opening its doors to visitors. From Thursday 18 June the gate onto Cemetery Road has been open for all visitors from 9.30 to 4pm on weekdays. However, for the time being, the site remains closed at weekends and on bank holidays and all the buildings and toilets are also closed.
Hungerford Road Play Park
All children’s play areas in the city were locked up at the beginning of the pandemic, so Hungerford Road Play Park is now looking somewhat worse for wear. Weeds have taken hold and the area will need some considerable work before it is suitable for use. Jos said, ‘I’ve asked the council to do the necessary work as soon as possible to make sure it is ready for local children when play spaces are allowed to reopen’.

Moment of remembrance #Thankyoutogether – – Saturday 4 July Sunday 5 July at 5pm Saturday 4 July, the day before the birthday, will be a moment of remembrance and reflection for those we have lost during the pandemic. This is a chance for the nation to come together and pay our respects. It is being led by the Together Coalition and we are asking people to place a light in their window or on their doorstep. As part of this collective memorial, and as a mark of respect and tribute to NHS staff, key workers and everyone who has played their part during the pandemic, iconic landmarks including the London Eye, Royal Albert Hall, Blackpool Tower and Wembley Arch will be illuminated in blue. NHS England are calling on sports stadiums, bridges, castles, monuments, conference venues and landmarks to join in lighting up our skylines and cities on the evening of 4 July. Thank you to the #MakeitBlue Collective who are supporting them as part of their #LightItBlue campaign. The campaign was created by the events and entertainment industry to show a united display of gratitude for health and key workers. Have a look at this list of the buildings that we have been told will be lit up. We will update the list as we hear about more, so please check back. They are also encouraging people to take photos and share them via social media using the hashtags #LightItBlue and #ThankYouTogether.
16
Sunday 5 July 1948 was the day the NHS was founded and the whole country is invited to come together at 5pm to applaud all those who have been helping us through the pandemic and recognise the vital community connections that continue to support us all. Broadcasters will suspend normal transmissions at 5pm. Everybody will be encouraged to stop what they’re doing and join with others (following social distancing advice of course) in their streets or neighbourhoods to applaud not just the NHS and other key workers but all those who have volunteered or helped keep services and community networks going. Following the applause, we hope people will enjoy a drink or a cup of tea and reflect with family, friends and neighbours on the bonds that have sustained us in recent months and will continue to do so.

ST ANNES’S STATION & HOMELESSNESS IN BRISTOL Hello all. Here’s an update of what I have been doing as Councillor for Brislington East recently including a report back on the action the council has taken recently in regard to homeless people during the lockdown. ST ANNES’S STATION Last Friday, Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy and I submitted our second stage bid in relation to the re-opening of St Anne’s Park station. The bid, which runs to 21 pages, sets out why we think there is a strong case to re-open the station and, if successful, will bring with it almost £50,000 of government funding to carry out a full scale feasibility study. We have had excellent support from Bristol City Council’s transport department and I am confident we have put forward a very strong case. The bid will now be reviewed by a panel including representatives from the Government, Network Rail and others who will decide whether or not to allocate the next stage funding. You can read more about Restoring Your Railways fund here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/reopening-beeching-era-lines-and-stations/re-opening-beeching-era-lines-and-stations#ideas-fund It is now out of our hands, but fingers crossed!
When lockdown was introduced, the Council received a call from government asking them to get all homeless people off the street within 24 hours. Whilst this target proved somewhat ambitious, within a very short time the vast majority of people were housed off the streets and out of shelters. In order to achieve this the council contracted with three hotels as well as the YMCA and the YHA to provide safer accommodation for a large number of people, with the current numbers being around 280 people in hotels. The contracts with these hotels currently last until the end of July. The Council is very keen not to go back to the way things were before the pandemic. The city has introduced a 24-month Move On project with the aims of: * Dealing with the systemic bottle neck in supported housing – people ready to move on but not enough affordable accommodation * Securing an ongoing supply of accommodation from various sectors to meet the long term need * Moving people out of temporary accommodation and supported housing. * Creating wrap-around support services focussed on the needs of each individual.
HOMELESSNESS IN BRISTOL Here’s something we should celebrate about our city: during the entire lockdown period to date, not a single homeless person has died from Covid-19 as far as we know. In March 2020, before the pandemic hit, Bristol had roughly 120 people rough sleeping and another 140 in shelters such as the one at St Annes House.
One of the key changes which the government has made during the crisis is the increase in the Local Housing Allowance to ensure that it covers the full rent for a larger number of houses in the Private Sector. It is hoped that this will be maintained after the lockdown, as it will greatly improve the chances of getting more people off the streets and eventually into their own housing in the private rented sector.

Bristol City Centre BID backed campaign warns of business collapse and mass redundancies #RaiseTheBar campaign calls for threshold for vital grant to be raised to protect jobs when furlough scheme ends The government's furlough scheme is concealing the true picture of unemployment in Bristol, according to the Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) and greater support must be given to at risk retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. The Bristol City Centre BID, along with BARBIE, the Bristol Association of Restaurants, Bars and Independent Establishments, are backing a nationwide campaign calling on government to raise the threshold for its Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grant (RHLG). Without this, they warn, hundreds of Bristol employees who have been protected by the Coronavirus Job Retention (furlough) Scheme could find no business and therefore no job to return to when the scheme ends.
These include popular, successful venues in the city centre such as the Milk Thistle on Colston Avenue and No 1 Harbourside, which have also backed the campaign along with dozens of others. Bristol City Centre BID and the #RaiseTheBar campaign, set up by Croydon BID (Business Improvement District) are calling on central government to expand the rateable value threshold for eligible businesses to access the £25,000 grant from £51,000 to £150,000. Access to this support, they argue, will be the difference between survival and bankruptcy for thousands of High Street businesses in Bristol and across the UK.
Together the BIDs and #RaiseTheBar partners maintain the furlough scheme is hiding the true picture of unemployment in Bristol and the UK, by providing support to employees whilst their BARBIE is currently working with 60 at risk Bristol employers are facing closure. Adjustments to the businesses which have not been eligible for furloughing scheme have also created an unlevel government grants, 14 of which are at high risk and playing field of support meaning businesses are together employ 200 people. missing out on vital funds to stay afloat whilst their employees are able to remain financially supported Currently businesses such as pubs, bars, on furlough. restaurants and cafés are only eligible for the £25,000 grant if the premises they operate from The situation is likely to reach tipping point this has a rateable value of less than £51,000. This month, with the next quarterly rent due on means large numbers of leisure and hospitality Wednesday 24 June putting businesses at risk of businesses based in larger buildings in Bristol are closure, with overheads and the cost of re-opening cut off from the financial support offered to smaller depleting cash reserves. outlets.

Keith Rundle, operations director at Bristol City Centre BID says: "The furlough scheme has been a life-line for thousands of Bristol employees as we continue to battle all that the covid pandemic throws at us. But it will all be wasted if as the scheme is wound up, staff find themselves with no employer or business to return to. With rents due and costs of putting in protection measures prior to safely re-opening, businesses need access to financial support now more than ever - to ensure they can get back up and running, keep people in jobs and help get the economy moving again." Brendan Murphy, Co-Founder of BARBIE, the Bristol Association of Restaurants, Bars and Independent Establishments, added: "There are so many businesses that have been left out of government grants, some because they are over the £51k rateable value cap and others that don't fit the eligibility criteria which seems to be different depending on which council you are with. We are currently dealing with 14 of such cases that between them employ over 200 staff. Urgent intervention and support is required to stop the industry collapsing and that support is required now, not in 3 months time." Amy Devenish, Owner of The Gloucester Old Spot, Bristol commented: "Simply because a business has a rateable value set at a certain level by the council, It should not immediately assume that the business is any better able to survive a crisis like this. A sliding scale of grants would have been a much fairer solution."
Kwan Voong, Owner, Toro Noodle Bar added: "There are a huge number of Bristol businesses over the £51k RV cap in Bristol and we need urgent support as has been provided by councils such as Camden, Hackney and Lambeth who are using their additional discretionary grants to support the hospitality sector." Matthew Sims, CEO, Croydon BID and co-founder of #RaiseTheBar campaign commented: "The Government is in danger of pushing businesses to the brink of the abyss and in turn leaving businesses with no choice but to make serious decisions regarding their future operation, leading to redundancies and even closure. If this happens, the positive work of the Job Retention Scheme would have been short-lived, leaving the country, long term in a far worse position and having spent millions on financial aid supporting the employee, but ignoring the employer." Set up by Croydon BID (Business Improvement District), leaders of the #RaiseTheBar campaign believe access to the £25,000 is the difference between survival and bankruptcy for businesses on High Streets across England and Wales, which have welcomed an outpouring of support from the public during lockdown choosing to support their local communities. Your Garden In July
Fling the doors open to the garden and head outside! Summer is here and what better way to spend your free time than being outside and enjoying your beautiful flower filled garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of bloom. Make sure you keep new plants well hydrated to get them through those long, hot days and hoe off those pesky weeds, which can thrive in the sunshine. Although this still can be a busy time in the garden, don’t forget to find the time to sit back and relax so that you can enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in to achieve your beautiful display.
The essential gardening jobs for July FEED, WEED, AND DEADHEAD Adding a liquid feed to your weekly watering regime will give a much needed boost to hanging baskets, container and borders helping them to produce more flowers and, in some cases encouraging a second flourish of flowers late in the season. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials will also benefit from regular deadheading.
With Hanging baskets a bit of common sense goes a long way. Try lifting a container or basket. Does if feel light or under watered? How does the compost look? Is it pale and shrunken away from the sides? Dig into the compost with your fingers. Does it feel dry? It should be moist but not dripping wet. During prolonged dry spells, water at least once a day.
PLANT OF THE MONTH: Salvia
SPEND SOME LAZY HOURS IN THE GARDEN
How should you plant them? Plant in full sun, with very well drained soil, and water well when it’s dry. Trim in the spring to maintain shape and deadhead once the flowers start to fade.
A member of the sage family. Salvias are diverse group of plants ranging from annuals to herbaceous perennials and herbs Why should you plant them? With flowers that are popular with wildlife, they not only deliver colour and fragrance but are also great at attracting bees and butterflies. Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a great show from June through much of the summer and in to autumn.
This will prolong the flowering period making the garden more attractive and will also prevent the plants from putting their energy in to seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. Don’t forget to keep weeds down they steal vital moisture and nutrients. Kill them by regularly hoeing borders and vegetable patches. Larger weeds should be dug out or pulled up by hand.
After all your hard work, enjoy the sunshine and laze in your garden.

Covid-19 Pandemic – From Physical Health To Mental Health Crisis: The 2nd Wave That Will Affect Us All As things start to settle down, with the peak of Covid-19 hopefully now behind us, people are starting to return to some sense of “normality” in their day to day lives. I think we all recognise that things will never be the same again after this pandemic, which has effected everyone, through loss of loved ones or battling through the immediate threat to our physical health, employment and financial worries and stress, triggered by a situation which truly brought the world to a standstill. In the wake of this unprecedented global event, as we begin to feel more relaxed about the threat to our physical health, it is our mental health which will now be a concern for many of us. The impact of Covid-19 on our mental health will likely have been building throughout lockdown.
As we return to social interactions and the general business of everyday life, many people will start to recognise signs that they are struggling mentally with the readjustment. Meeting up with family and friends and participating in social activities again may be challenging for some people. Coping again with the pressures of commuting, time management, targets and office politics, while balancing work/home life, finding time to relax and the difficulties managing these stressors, will also return. Sadly, many people have lost loved ones and will also be experiencing the grieving process for those no longer with us due to Covid-19. How these events will impact on our mental health will, of course, differ for each of us. Regardless of what stresses we face; it is our ability to cope with them, combined with what support we have around us, that helps us to manage when things get particularly difficult for us. It is likely that many will experience anxiety around returning to work or social activities and so important that we all recognise this as we go back into the workplace, ensuring that we are supportive and kind to all of our colleagues, as we may not know what they have had to overcome in order to be there.
Many more of us will be struggling with our mood. Isolation, loneliness and stress are the main causes of depression and it is likely that this situation will have had a profound impact on people who were already experiencing problems with depression and anxiety. Supporting everyone in the workplace with a positive and open culture around mental health is more important now than ever. Employers can do so much to help their employees to maintain good mental health and it is in the interests of everyone for them to do so. The financial cost of mental health to employers has increased to more than £45 billion a year in the UK but the true cost is in the impact that poor mental health has on individual lives. Wise employers are no longer saying “leave it at the door” when it comes to mental health in the workplace. They recognise that, to get the best out of their employees, they need to invite them to bring their whole self to work. A culture around acceptance that provides non-judgemental and supportive responses to mental health in the workplace improves outcomes for all. Earlier intervention when mental health problems do develop, increase recovery rates, and protect over-stretched NHS services. Where employers provide proactive support around staff mental health, they also see a return on investment of £6 for every £1 spent, through reduced absences and improved productivity, satisfaction and retention. As we return to work and our stressful, busy lives, making mental health support the top priority for workplaces is no longer a choice for employers, it is a must.
Please visit our website at www.mindmapswellbeing.org.uk to learn more about ways we are helping employers to support their staff with mental wellbeing and please get in touch to see how we can help in your workplace.
