Mikes letter So It looks like our holiday plans for 2020 are destroyed again thanks to the relentless global pandemic that has risen from China in December 2019.

The new 14 day quarantine that has been put in place by good old Boris has well and truly stuffed the tourist industry this year, however I can’t get my head around why the holiday companies want to get the rules relaxed? Surely peoples life’s are more important than a great sun tan and sangria on the beach aren’t they? I say fair play to Boris’s idea as I would have locked down the UK’s borders a long time ago to stop the virus ever getting in the country. I wonder if we will ever get back to normality again to be honest. As face masks are now mandatory in our shops and on public transport I am seeing some really creative ideas too. Last Saturday I saw a awesome smiley face and a great cats whiskers mask. However would you put your business logo all over face mask to drum up more brand awareness for your business? I’d love to hear your thoughts on all of this. message me at info@directlocalonline.com

LEADING BRISTOL IVF DOCTOR PRESENTS FINDINGS AT EUROPEAN CONFERENCE Bristol IVF specialist Hajeb Kamali has presented research on his findings into different methods of fertility treatment for women with endometriosis at a major European conference.

“The paper was very well received by the audience with many questions aimed at finding out more about our work.

Research by Dr Kamali, who works for the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM) was chosen for presentation at the 36th European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) conference.

“I have a particular interest in this area and have previously presented different work within this field at ESHRE. I believe the use of ICSI should be when required and in the patients best interests and work such as ours will help to reinforce the argument and promote patient centred care.”

This year’s conference was planned for Copenhagen but was switched to a virtual event, attended by top fertility specialists from around the globe.

The Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine has world class facilities and technology that treats both private and NHS patients.

Dr Kamali’s research showed that ICSI fertility treatment, where sperm is injected directly into an egg, did not improve live birth rates compared to conventional IVF in couples with endometriosis in an analysis of 10,420 treatment cycles.

BCRM is involved in innovative research and have one of the best success rates with IVF and other fertility treatments in the UK.

He said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to give the presentation. I felt very proud to represent the BCRM and the work we are doing at such a global forum.

Anyone with fertility issues can register for a virtual open evening webinar or to book an initial consultation appointment email BCRM at: info@ BCRM.org.uk, call 0117 3018605 or visit: www. fertilitybristol.com.

Your Garden In August

After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry too much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.

Take herb cutting

August is the ideal month to take cuttings woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.

Pruning and tidying

Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.

8

Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.

A city walk through Leigh Woods Walk in a nutshell A tour around some of the south-west’s most beautiful and historic woodland, including an array of rare plant and animal life and stunning views of the Avon Gorge, the Clifton suspension bridge and Bristol itself. The route is not too hilly, and there are some alternative surfaced routes for buggies and wheelchairs, but forest terrain can be uneven, and it is fairly easy to get lost (although not for long). Be aware, too, that some of these trails are also used by cyclists.

Why it’s special Even before Brunel’s great memorial, the Clifton suspension bridge, made it easy to cross Avon Gorge, Bristolians had been escaping to Leigh Woods for centuries.

Directions 1 From the car park follow the waymarkers for the red and blue routes downhill. The red trail turns off right at the foot of the slope; keep to the blue trail, passing a house on your left. 2 Carry on along the track, and when Sustrans cycle route 41 goes right, continue straight ahead to Paradise Bottom. Follow the gravel path past a pond to a small car park. 3 Follow the path behind the information board, heading downhill through the old arboretum towards another pond. Go around the pond, climbing back uphill. Go through a gate then turn left back on to the main track you came along. After 300m turn left down Sustrans route 41. Head downhill towards the river Avon until you reach the cycle path beside the river.

The peace and beauty to be found among the trees here is the best possible antidote to city life, while the flora and fauna, the iron age hillfort at Stokeleigh Camp, and even the bridge itself create many points of interest.

4 Turn right and follow the path upstream. After half a mile you’ll see Clifton suspension bridge. Turn right through the arch under the railway 180m before the bridge and follow Nightingale Valley up the North Road entrance to Leigh Woods.

With a natural play area near the National Trust office, equipped with swings, balance beams and climbing logs, it is also an excellent place to bring children.

5 Take the left entrance from the road back into the wood and follow the blue trail up to Valley Road. Turn right on Valley Road and head towards the National Trust office. Follow the Sustrans trail past the left end of the office to a stone wall. Keep the wall on your left and leave the blue Sustrans path. Walk on until you reach the purple trail marker post 18. 6 Follow the purple waymarked trail through the wall and carry on until you reach the copper beeches of Coronation Avenue at post 21. Turn left to get back to the main road and the bus stop or turn right and follow the road back to the car park.

The 3 Best Cycle Routes In Bristol

Bristol and Bath Railway Path

Bristol to Portishead

This is one of the most popular routes in Bristol for cyclists and walkers alike. It was originally a railway in the 1960s, before Sustrans converted it into a cycle path between 1979 and 1986. In the process, it became the first of Sustrans’ many cycleways.

Beginning at Queen Square, you ride directly south to the wharf, crossing the small Prince Street bridge before taking a right and cutting through Museum Street to meet the River Avon.

The Bristol and Bath Railway Path is a point-topoint route and can be ridden in either direction. You can set off in Bristol on the corner of Trinity Street and St. Philips Road, or in Bath from the old railway bridge before Windsor Bridge Road. The riverside path continues into the centre of Bath, so why not carry on and explore this beautiful town if you have the time? You won’t have to contend with any cars on this route either. It’s entirely traffic-free and lined with lush greenery, so you’ll feel nestled into the countryside. There are some interesting features along the way as well, namely the Staple Hill tunnel and the traditional Bitton train station serving refreshments, cakes and sandwiches. Distance: 13.9 miles Elevation: 266m

14

From here, you ride along the River Avon’s banks as it winds down the striking Avon Gorge, past Leigh Woods and underneath the towering Clifton Suspension Bridge. The dirt path is smooth and the sharpest hill is only a 30m incline over 1.5 miles on the approach to Ham Green, so this ride is well suited to cruising. At the halfway point, you’ll arrive at the quaint boating village of Pill. Here, you can stop for lunch or a quick coffee before pressing onto Portishead. The last quarter of the journey hops back onto the road, but you’ll still ride along tree-lined lanes between farmland for the most part. Once you reach Portishead, you can continue northwest and finally rest at the shoreline overlooking Wales across the Bristol Channel. Distance: 11.2 miles Elevation: 329m

Bristol Docks Loop Some might argue that Bristol is best experienced by bicycle – and it’s hard to disagree after watching this documentary from Böikzmöind, a Bristol fixie bike community. The Bristol Docks Loop consists of nearly three-quarters traffic-free paths, which is quite a feat for a city centre cycle route. At 3 miles, it’s perfect for taking things easy and soaking up the city’s atmosphere.

You can glide down the banks of the Avon and cut across town to see all it has to offer in no time compared to walking or using public transport. There’s something more romantic about it too. Starting at Bristol Cathedral, you’ll pass the Bristol central library and then join the path at the wharf for views of the docks and the SS Great Britain. Pass the docks and you’ll join the River Avon and the Chocolate Path will guide you back into town. Central Bristol is full of pubs and cafes if you fancy a pit stop before finishing off the ride

Distance: 3 miles Elevation: 57m

Sky Orchestra A New Dawn for Bristol

•

Hot air balloons perform musical dawn chorus to serenade the public

•

New music specially commissioned and performed by Bristol musicians

•

Event scheduled to take place later in July

A massive musical dawn chorus is planned to take place in Bristol his month, delivered from the sky directly to people's homes from a flotilla of seven hot air balloons with speakers attached.

Sky Orchestra was first performed in the city at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in 2003, and in 2011 flew across the Capital for the London Olympics 2012.

Serenading people in their homes with specially commissioned new music, the Sky Orchestra is planned to offer people hope for the future and showcase the creative talent of the city.

“As the city begins to unlock, I wanted a way to deliver an uplifting experience to people in their homes. Something spectacular, yet somehow intimate; to create a sense of renewal, hope and rebirth, to raise the public’s spirits and mark a moment in time” says Luke, who is well known for artworks such as Museum of the Moon, Play Me I’m Yours and Park and Slide.

Sky Orchestra - A New Dawn for Bristol is an arts project by renowned international Bristol artist Luke Jerram and Bristol-based BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones. It features the premiere of a new composition commissioned by Bristol Old Vic, featuring musicians from around the city. Seven hot air balloons, each with speakers attached to its basket, will deliver the instrumental dawn chorus from the sky to create an uplifting visual and musical experience in surround sound directly to people in their homes.

18

Dan Jones who is co-creating the new score said: “We’re bringing together some of Bristol’s most successful musicians with future creators who are just emerging; Bristol continues to be a launchpad for musical innovation that spreads right around the world. This has been a great opportunity for all of us to thank Bristol as a continued source of inspiration.”

Hot air balloon flotillas have not been seen over the city since the lockdown, so the Sky Orchestra will provide a welcome return to our city skyline. With seven hot air balloons positioned over a city, this makes it one of the largest surround sound artworks in the world. Planned by Luke and Dan since the beginning of the lockdown, the seven local ballooning crews are being brought together by lead pilot Peter Dalby. The performance has only just been made possible as social distancing restrictions have been relaxed to allow pilots and crews to work together safely. To avoid public crowds turning up to watch the launch, the dates and times of the performance are a secret. The performance will be announced on the day, just as the balloons take off.

Tom Morris from Bristol Old Vic said: "All of Bristol is a theatre and the safest performance space in the world is the sky. Bristol Old Vic may be closed, for now, but the ears and eyes and hearts of all Bristolians are not and the need for inspiring work by our most extraordinary artists is greater than ever under the effect of the pandemic. We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with Luke and Dan and a host of Bristolian musicians on this wonderful project, their gift to the city during lock down. May it bring hope and delight to all who see and hear it." Sky Orchestra - A New Dawn for Bristol is taking place with kind permission from Bristol City Council, within social distancing guidelines.

5 Independent restaurants offering 50% off in August August is set to be a great month for eating out, with lots of restaurants offering 50 per cent off food. Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the Eat Out To Help Out scheme earlier this month in a bid to revive the UK economy following the Covid-19 lockdown. The scheme means diners can enjoy a half price meal between Monday and Wednesday every week from August. While you can take advantage of the offer as many times as you like, you cannot use the deal on alcohol and the discount is capped at £10 per head.

Grounded www.cafegrounded.co.uk All of Grounded's Bristol sites, including Bedminster, Horfield and Redfield, have signed up to the scheme, meaning you can enjoy 50 per cent off its food between Monday and Wednesday. Considering Grounded's food is already incredibly reasonably priced, there are some real bargains to be had.

The Government hopes the incentive will encourage people to dine out more, in turn pumping money back into businesses and the high street. Below are independent restaurants in the Bristol area that have signed up to the scheme. If you manage a restaurant and would like to be added to the list, email robin.murray@reachplc.com. Beerd www.beerdbristol.com Popular for its artisan pizzas and impressive range of locally brewed beers, Beerd has announced it is taking part in the scheme. If a quality pizza for around £5 sounds good to you, you might want to take a trip to St Michael’s Hill.

Burger Joint www.theburgerjoint.co.uk With locations in North Street and Whiteladies Road, Burger Joint has become something of a Bristol institution over its 11-year run. Once you've tried one of its burgers, you'll understand why it has built up such a loyal following.

The Wellington www.thewellingtonbristol.co.uk The Welly’ is a large, detached, traditional red-brick pub at the top of Bristol’s vibrant Gloucester Road. It’s a much-loved pub that’s well known for providing a warm welcome and great service. Part of local brewery Bath Ales’ pub estate, it offers high quality food and drink in a lively setting. Featuring an enviable range of beers (available in jugs as well as glasses), a wide ranging menu, a new conservatory, plenty of space to the rear of the pub for al fresco drinking, and a children’s play area, The Wellington continues to be a popular destination for friends and families alike.

20

And if you haven't, perhaps you should change that in August, especially as they'll be a mouthwatering half price.

CowBee www.cowbee.com Most people in Bristol with a sweet tooth will be well aware of CowBee based on Park Street, with a menu that includes waffles, ice cream and many more popular dessert options. The café has have signed up for the Government Eat Out scheme and will be offering 50 per cent off its entire menu between Mondays and Wednesdays.

Charities join forces to understand how COVID-19 affects people with type 1 diabetes Kathleen Gillespie, Professor of Molecular Whilst risk of death from COVID-19 is low, for people with and without type 1 diabetes, NHS figures nonetheless show the risk is higher for those with the condition.

Medicine at the University of Bristol, said: "Although we know that people with type 1 diabetes are at greater risk if they develop COVID-19, we know very little about how this translates to people’s experiences of the pandemic.

Scientists don’t know how many people with type 1 have had coronavirus and recovered, obscuring the full impact that the virus is having on the UK’s 400,000 people with type 1.

"With this research, we hope to get a much clearer idea of how the type 1 diabetes community has been affected by coronavirus, and how they can be kept safe and well in future."

Now, JDRF and Diabetes UK will co-fund Professor Kathleen Gillespie, at the University of Bristol, to find out. Professor Gillespie's team will work with a research group in Milan that has developed a test that can detect coronavirus antibodies in a small sample of blood – small enough to be collected via post. By offering this test to around 5,000 people participating in ongoing studies of type 1 diabetes (the Bart’s Oxford study and UK TrialNet), Professor Gillespie will be able to estimate how many people contracted coronavirus.

Rachel Connor, Director of Research Partnerships at JDRF, said: "Everyone with type 1 diabetes is different, and Professor Gillespie’s work will shed some much-needed light on the individual experiences behind the statistics.

She will also ask participants to share their experiences of COVID-19 and lockdown – including whether they have been shielding, if they have had any COVID-19 symptoms, and how their blood glucose levels have reacted. With this information, Professor Gillespie will be able to see how the type 1 diabetes community has been hit by COVID-19. This will give scientists and clinicians a clearer idea of the risk that coronavirus poses to people with type 1, enabling healthcare teams to better support and protect people with the condition.

24

"We’re hopeful that with this information, policymakers and healthcare teams will be able to give people with type 1 diabetes the advice and support they need." Dr Elizabeth Robertson, Director of Research at Diabetes UK, said: "There's never an easy time to live with diabetes, but the COVID-19 pandemic presents particular challenges for people with type 1. It is vital that we understand how having COVID-19, as well as living in lockdown, affects people with type 1 diabetes so that we can provide them with the best advice and care during this difficult time and in the future. "We're delighted to join forces with JDRF to fund Professor Gillespie's research, which will help us to do this by giving important insights into the experiences of people with type 1 diabetes during the pandemic."

A new telephone support service for ex-service personnel has been launched by the Armed Forces charity Alabaré.

The service will help Veterans who are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing and will provide specialist support to those in need, including guidance, advice and coping strategies specifically to manage anxieties around the Coronavirus pandemic. A recent survey has found that there has been a 50% increase in Veterans stating they are not managing their mental health well compared to before the pandemic started*. Emma Wellock manages Alabaré’s Riverside Sanctuary mental wellbeing support service, from which the new Veterans helpline will be run. Emma said; “We are delighted to be expanding our support service to provide a dedicated new helpline for Veterans. We are here 7 days a week to provide them with the support they need through these difficult times.

The lockdown has been difficult for many of us but particularly acute for some ex-service personnel who are already living with complex challenges in their mental wellbeing.” Alabaré run a range of accommodation and support services for Veterans across the South West of England and throughout Wales. In Bristol, the charity operates two homes which can house a total of 10 ex-Armed Forces personnel who could otherwise be forced into sleeping rough on the streets. Of those currently supported by the charity, 44% of Veterans had stated that they had struggled with their mental wellbeing. The new Veterans helpline service has been made possible thanks to financial support through the Armed Forces Covenant. Any Veteran wishing to access the telephone service can do so every day from 9am – 11pm by calling 01722 466680.

Green Spaces I moved to Bristol 16 years ago from London. One of the main motivations to move here was Bristol’s closeness to the beautiful surrounding countryside. Since living here I have found the beautiful countryside is also spread out within the city. According to a Dayoutwiththekids.co.uk Brislington is lucky enough to have access to 85 parks and playgrounds. And indeed a look on Google maps shows a very green area. The impact of the lockdown the parks and greenspaces have been saviour from the isolation and boredom. I am used to taking my dog for a walk each day, but now I took the time to explore different greenspaces and walked new routes. Walking I find gives me time to think, sort out the problems and come up with new ideas. It was also the best time to have a conversation with my teenage son, he seems to talk more when walking and not attached to a device. Indeed, when he grew frustrated and angry, I would send him out to a park, or on a cycle ride. It really calmed him down. Gave him time to think things through. I know there has been some problems with young people riding their mopeds through the green spaces, and leaving a lot of litter and other party debris. Though this very distressing but it is worth mentioning that this is a small minority of young people and certainly should not be held up as the norm. Some of my friends who have been forced to work from home, found the flexibility of being able to have their sandwiches on a park bench was a calming time for reflection and recharging of batteries. It seems thinking time is not normally factored into our working lives.

28

During the lockdown, I would often walk my dog in the morning before 9 am to be-able to social distance effectively. I would see many parents with their toddlers playing near trees, exploring flowers and tiny wildlife (insects). The children seemed to use the natural environment and their imagination while the playgrounds where closed. Later on, when some of the restrictions where eased, I saw many families meeting up, and the children using the whole park and not just the playground. I hope a consequence of this is a generation of young people that will take or green spaces seriously, and take responsibility for their continuing existence and upkeep. Whether that’s through directly looking after them, our holding the politicians to account for keeping them and even expanding them. Our green spaces have become really important to our communities in the pandemic not least because the virus does not seem to transmit well outdoors One of my great pleasures of the use of the parks and green spaces has always been the non-monetarization of the activity. You do not need to pay anything up front. Parents can have a break from pester power, of purchasing things. We can forget what we can afford for a while. Parks cost money to maintain and it is all to tempting for councils in this austerity age to try and raise funds through their use. Be it for parking, or rental of ta tea shop, or even events and entertainment. As a community we should resist this. Something is better paid for by us as a whole, (through taxation) rather than on a piece by piece basis. A good start to looking after our places is to let the council know how you feel and add to the conversation. Article by Katja Hornchen. a candidate for Brislington East council. I together with Tim Rippington will be representing Labour at the next local elections.
