Mikes letter Welcome to this weeks edition of Direct Local and what a roller coater of a few days we had! Where shall we begin, lets start with the government u turn in the exam results. Isn’t is funny how once the government was put under massive pressure by the teachers and student of pretty much all the schools and colleges in the country to amend the algorithm that created so many incorrect exam results, that within a matter of days decided that all the time and money that was spent on the dam software was pointless and reverted to the teachers decision. And rightly so as they know their students abilities better than any computer. Which leads me on to what other algorithms they have concocted over the last few month are incorrect too and here’s a thought could they have got Covid-19 all wrong too right from the start? I’d love to here your thoughts on this whole subject and I do apologies now if I am out of order in any way. As always my contact details are on the left.

Your Garden In September
Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time of the year to appreciate those long lasting plants that flower into autumn and if you have a fruit or vegetable patch you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of a hopefully successful harvest. Don’t forget - if you look forward to a great spring display of colour then now is the time to buy and plant your bulbs. Whatever you’re doing in your garden this month, be sure to make the most of the remaining warmth while you can. Divide herbaceous perennials September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congested. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible. Take Perennial cuttings Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthemum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint.
8
Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory. Plant spring flowering bulbs Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders. Tulips come in a huge variety of colours and bloom at a time of year when there is very little colour in the garden. snowdrops, appearing before the tulips, are one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. When the snowdrops begin to fade, the daffodil begins to appear, with its cheery shades of yellow brightening the borders.
Looking good this month Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ Why should you plant them? Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ is an evergreen, rounded shrub with ovate, glossy green leaves that make a very attractive plant for borders and containers. Easy to care for, this Hebe is drought tolerant and flowers prolifically in summer.
How should you plant them ? The variety of Hebe flowers best when planted in full sun. the addition of a good quality compost when planting is essential to prevent the roots becoming too dry. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Parents encouraged to register nursery children for September term Parents of babies, toddlers and pre-school children are being encouraged to register their children for a place at nursery following the re-opening of settings in the UK. Childcare providers say the benefits young children will gain from being in a social setting are huge and with additional safety measures in place parents should feel confident about enrolling their children. Tony Driffield, who owns the Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-school group, along with wife Bev, an expert in early education, says children who have been kept in lockdown since March will thrive in a more dynamic environment. “I’ve really felt for the children and families who have been at home since March. It is important for children to experience new surroundings, have interaction with their peers and enjoy activities that parents can’t always provide at home,” said Tony. “With schools returning to the ‘new normal’ in September there is no reason nursery children shouldn’t also reap the rewards of early education. “It is particularly important for children due to start primary school next year. Experiencing a year in pre-school where we begin their educational journey and encourage them to build relationships with others, will help children in many ways become confident and ready for that vital next step.
“We believe the benefits of nursery are incredibly valuable to a child’s development - socially, emotionally, educationally and physically. Children who have been kept in isolation for months need the support we can give them to start getting back to normality.” Mama Bear’s is a family-run nursery group with 24 settings across Bristol, Somerset and Devon. Providing a home-from-home environment for children, the settings cater for ages 3 months to five years. All 24 Mama Bear’s sites are accepting registrations for children over the summer and for the September term. Tony continued: “Since we reopened our doors to all children in June the demand has slowly but surely increased as parents feel more confident and are happy with the safety measures we have put in place. There’s also the practical element in that many parents are returning to work so childcare for some is essential. “Places are quickly filling for our September term, which is a fantastic sign of parents’ confidences growing. Those who haven’t secured a place for their child yet should give us a call and our nursery managers can talk through everything including our new Covid policies.” For more information and contact details of each individual Mama Bear’s Day Nursery visit www.mamabear.co.uk

Screening early could save lives Screening women for breast cancer in their forties could save up to 400 lives a year without a significant increase in over-diagnosis, according to new research. At present, the NHS screening programme is offered to women aged 50-70 every three years, but those with a higher genetic risk of the disease may be screened earlier. The new findings, published in the journal Lancet Oncology, are based on the UK Breast Screening Age Trial which took place between 1990 and 1997. More than 160,000 women aged 39-41 were randomised to receive either annual mammography, or the usual NHS breast screening which commences at age 50. In the 23-year follow-up, carried out by researchers from Queen Mary University of London, results of the trial showed that screening women aged 40-49 led to a 25% reduction in breast cancer mortality in the first 10 years.
14
They said that the total years of life saved from breast cancer in the intervention group was estimated as 620, which corresponds to 11.5 years saved per 1,000 women invited to earlier screening. Based on the UK population of women in their 40s, that translates to somewhere between 300 and 400 lives being saved every year if the screening age was lowered and there was a 70% uptake. Breast cancer screening uses an X-ray test called a mammogram to spot cancers that are too small to see or feel. Around one in eight women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. If detected early enough, the disease can be treated and recovery chances are good. However, at present there is some uncertainty over whether earlier screening might lead to over-diagnosis of breast cancer. This is because screening can often lead to detection of harmless cancers that can cause unnecessary distress and expose patients to the potential side-effects of treatment.
BIG ENERGY FIRMS LOSING OUT IN ENERGY EXODUS
The Big 6 Energy suppliers have lost more than 400,000 customers since June 1st As the UK falls into recession there has been a large increase in the number of households switching away from the Big Six energy providers in order to save on their bills, according to Nailsea, Bristol-based auto-switching specialists Flipper. “Nearly 1,000,000 people have switched energy supplier since June 1 and more than 400,000 of those moved away from the Big Six energy firms that dominate the market,” said Mark Gutteridge, CEO of auto-switching website Flipper. “This is an increase of 25% compared to the same time last year, while the number of people switching back to a large supplier has fallen by 32%”.
They saw customers numbers drop dramatically and have lost more than 8 MILLION households to the new entrants over the past 5 years. Flipper are supporting thousands of households across the UK by helping them find the best energy deal for their needs and while saving money remains the major factor, being with a supplier that offers great service or being on a green energy tariff are also important for many customers. “A typical household can save around £330 a year by moving from a Standard tariff with a Big 6 supplier to a new deal with a really good mid-size supplier.” Unlike other auto-switching or comparison sites Flipper is independent and takes no commission or referral fees, meaning it can “flip” its members to any energy provider based on price, customer service and value for money. Its members pay a £30 annual subscription; however, no money is payable until Flipper finds a deal saving at least £50 off the current energy bill.
“People are now seeing the impact of the increase in home energy usage since lockdown in their bills and are taking action. And with pressure on Until 2013 the Big 6 supplied energy to 98% of all UK households but, as more suppliers entered the energy market, household budgets expected to increase in the coming months as the furlough For more information go to www.flipper. scheme ends, we expect this trend to community continue.”

Netflix commissions new Original series The Last Bus from Wildseed Studios
Netflix has commissioned a new 10 part live-action Original series aimed at the family and co-viewing audience from Wildseed Studios, called The Last Bus. Wildseed Studios is a Bristol-based multi award-winning scripted entertainment production company, specialising in nurturing exciting new talent to make premium content in live action and animation for older kids, family and young adult audiences. The Last Bus is an action-packed, sci-fi road trip adventure about a group of mismatched school students who band together to face a fearsome new machine intelligence. This ambitious series will be produced in Bristol and the South West and shot in the Bottle Yard Studios, with pre-production starting this month and shooting beginning in the autumn. Jesse Cleverly, Wildseed Studios' creative director and co-founder explains: "Although at the top level The Last Bus is a shamelessly entertaining sci-fi romp, at another level it is a powerful eco-fable about how the younger generation must be empowered to make very different choices from the generation which preceded it when it comes to the two big challenges of the age - environmental breakdown and hugely sophisticated artificial intelligence. 18
“We hope that by producing The Last Bus, and releasing it simultaneously to a global audience, we will have made a small contribution to the pool of courage young people will need to draw upon in the years ahead.” The studio has pioneered a unique approach to nurturing exciting new talent by identifying promising creatives, working intensively with them in development, piloting their ideas and pitching the resulting work into premium platforms. As a result, The Last Bus features an array of rising production talent identified and mentored by Wild seed over several years. Miles Bullough, managing director and co-founder of Wildseed Studios says: “When we established Wildseed, our vision was to become the leading destination for promising talent looking to get their break into scripted prime time - plugging the gap between platforms and financiers looking for new talent and the ‘bedroom creators’ with the ideas. “We are proud and delighted that Netflix has championed the production of this ambitious, entertaining and important show and we look forward to working with the excellent team we have assembled in order to execute this to the highest possible standard.”
The series is created and written by Paul Neafcy, who was spotted by Wildseed making mobile-phone films on YouTube from his bedroom and new directors include 25-year old Drew Casson and Nour Wazzi, the first Arab director of a premium drama in the UK. These rising stars will be supported by some of the UK's leading creative talents including directors Lawrence Gough (Misfits, Endeavour, Dr Who, Bancroft and Vera) and Steve Hughes (Doctor Who, Land Girls, Midsomer Murders, Treadstone) and production designer James North (Discovery of Witches, His Dark Materials, Dr Who and Line of Duty).
The cast will combine proven talent with some kids who have never acted before, cast from a trawl of thousands of young people.
Wildseed worked with Paul Neafcy to develop two series - Philip Human and PrankMe - for SVoD service Fullscreen before developing a premium scripted sci-fi drama concept and a 10-minute pilot that convinced Netflix this new creator was worth a full Original commission. Drew Casson met Wildseed when he was just 18 and produced Hungerford with him, a low budget 80-minute multi award winning feature film and then its sequel The Darkest Dawn, both picked up by Netflix. The studio worked with rising young director Nour Wazzi on proof of concept film The Moderators before asking her to direct two episodes of The Last Bus.

Bridge Farm Shines on Successful Open Day Saturday 1st August saw some 350 people attend an Open Day at Bridge Farm, which was an amazing turnout in the current circumstances - even with the COVID-19 precautions in place. Lots of love and support for the project was shown throughout the day. It was a warm, colourful, joyful event, greatly enjoyed by attendees, who were able to explore the site for the first time - some of whom have fond memories of the pigs and horses that used to live on Bridge Farm when Farmer Jack Withers had a working farm here, some recalling memories from before the M32 was built. Bridge Farm is a developing community-led housing project on Glenfrome Road. The purpose of the event was to display the current proposals to the local and wider community and to gather feedback. The plans focus on safeguarding the heritage of the farm, while balancing the desire for local food growing, the importance of wildlife space, with the need for more affordable homes with a focus on creativity and sustainability. Displays were presented outside along the cobbled road using the old barns doors as exhibition walls. This enabled visitors to maintain social distancing while studying the designs for the site. A dedicated 20+ team of volunteers as well as the architects and the landscape architects were on hand to chat with visitors, answer their questions and show them around the site.
20
Comedian Farmer Bridges turned up presenting a historical overview of various relics found in some of the barns to the amusement of those watching. The commitment and enthusiasm of the whole team brought the day to life, enhanced by the encouragement and positive reactions of the neighbours who visited. “What a great turnout, we were busy all day! It was lovely to hear so many positive views of the proposals, and to have so many visitors interested in becoming more involved here at Bridge Farm. We’ll listen to all the feedback and alter our plans accordingly. Hopefully we’ll be able to submit our planning application by the end of September” said Maggie Coles, one of the organisers. The community group behind Bridge Farm is the Ashley Vale Action Group (AVAG), who successfully delivered the self-build project beside the St Werburghs City Farm. They know the benefits that strong community and shared spaces can bring to both residents and local people using the site. The Bridge Farm approach is very different to conventional housing development. At its heart is community involvement, sustainability, affordability, self-build, and lots of green space. For those who could not attend and would like to comment, there is a web page where you can see the plans and tell us what you think. https://bridgefarmbristol.co.uk/

YOUNG PEOPLE COME TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Teenagers taking part in national youth programme, National Citizen Service (NCS) with Bristol City Robins Foundation are implementing their very own social action project to benefit people of all ages in the community. The group of young people, who were previously strangers to one another until the start of the programme and hail from all over Bristol, identified the Leisure Village South Bristol (formally South Bristol Sports Centre) as the focus of their social action project. The facility, which has acted as a community hub for people across the city, has been closed for more than two years as a result of a serious fire which caused catastrophic damage to the facility. The group of young people identified the Leisure Village as a critical element of the community and were keen to help the facility get back up and running as soon as possible to enable it to serve the community once more. Following a meeting with facility Director, Ben Ferris to identify the areas most in need of help, the youngsters set to work on their mission to rejuvenate the facility. On their first day of volunteering the group of teenagers cleared away more than 50 sacks worth of rubbish from the centre’s outdoor 4G football pitch – an area which has been subject to significant trespassing during the lockdown period. Following this, the group turned their attention to the centre’s changing facilities. 24
The group of young people cleared out, repaired, and redecorated each of the changing rooms as well as an outside area in front of the Leisure Village. “I really wanted to help my community get back on it’s feet after what has been a really difficult time.” Commented NCS participant, Jamie White. “South Bristol Sports Centre has helped so many people in Bristol and gives people the chance to engage in something positive and that is something that I really want to support.” Director of South Bristol Leisure Village, Ben Ferris, commented: “The young people have been a great help in rejuvenating our facilities and thanks to their support we are pleased to say that we will be opening our doors again to the public this Friday (August 14th).” Robins Foundation NCS Coordinator, Carly Price added: “It has been amazing to witness how much these guys have achieved over such a short period of time, and how they have really come together and developed some really strong friendships.” The next wave of NCS will get underway next week (Monday, August 17th) when a new group of young people will take part in the programme. New Yoga Studio + Creative Space opens at Wapping Wharf this weekend
Elevate, a new independent Yoga Studio + Creative Space curated by Bristol-born artist and yoga teacher Ella Riggs, is launching at Bristol's Wapping Wharf on Saturday (22nd August). Elevate's mission is to provide a platform for people to feel free within their body, to express and experience through a range of practices and artistic enquiry. The studio at CARGO 2 will offer yoga, meditation, sound healing, 1-2-1 sessions, wellness workshops, spoken word and art events from a range of fantastic facilitators, teachers and practitioners. It is open and accessible to all, with sessions both online and in-studio.
“Ella has already been a part of the Wapping Wharf community through her previous involvement in Pure Yoga so we know that her new venture will fit right in. We wish her all the best with her exciting plans for the studio; its focus on wellness couldn’t be more relevant and important right now.” Ella, an artist and yoga teacher, paused her Fine Art Masters to complete her yoga teacher training on ‘The Healing Island of Women', Isla Mujeres. Ella added: "I realised both my art and yoga practice followed the same line of enquiry, just in different packaging: deep dives into the mind-body relationship, experiencing the body as a vessel to be enjoyed, challenged and understood. This forms the basis of my intuitive teaching style, reactive to the energy, needs and interests in the room."
Ella has taken over the space formerly home to Pure Yoga, where she worked as studio manager and teacher. Amelia Hodge, owner of Pure Yoga, has left Wapping Wharf to focus Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its on her digital yoga business. tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ella said: "It has been my absolute dream to Ferry Steps, providing an important open my own space. MY FIRST 200 DAYS AS A COUNCILLOR I very recently passed two hundred days of being a Councillor, and I think I’ve probably had as crazy an introduction as any councillor has ever had!
And then, in mid March, everything changed completely. My diary shows a huge number of events that I was due to attend, some of which went ahead but others, such as the Future Parks forum, were cancelled at short Initially elected in January for only a notice once it became clear that large indoor four-month period, I really wanted to try to gatherings were to be avoided. My final act achieve some things before the next before lockdown as a Councillor was to attend campaign got underway at the beginning of a very odd Full Council meeting, at which only April and the Council effectively went into a minimum number of Members were in attenlimbo. Although I had no idea how to go about dance and business was dealt with extremely things, and whilst still getting to grips with quickly, with no electronic voting and everytechnology, protocols and everything else, I thing going through on a show of hands. The managed to arrange meetings with Council following day we were in full lockdown. officers during January and February to discuss a number of issues which I had raised Coronavirus during my campaign: I think it’s fair to say that it took a while to · Review and possible re-organisation of the adjust to the role of a Councillor during 513/4 bus service to make it more relevant lockdown, not just for myself but for everyone and serve a greater number of people in the else too. A number of voluntary and area community groups sprang up, and I was keen to help where I could, but now I was working · Extra funding to help get the renovation of from home and with the added bonus that my the Eastwood Farm playpark underway son Elliot was also sent home from his residential college and spent most of each week · Traffic calming measures for Newbridge with me. Morning walks became the basis of a Road whole new way of living. All council meetings were suspended, but a regular weekly briefing · A commuter ferry service between Netham with officers was set up, which was a great Lock and the Centre. innovation as it enabled us to get information first hand, ask questions and find out what we I was making good progress with all of these needed to know so that we could disseminate by the end of February and was very it within our communities. optimistic that we would be seeing some progress for Brislington in the very near Not long after this I was contacted by a BCC future. officer about helping to set up a Community Hub in Brislington. The original idea was that On top of this, I also managed to: this might be a physical location, acting as a distribution centre for food, and a place · Make my maiden speech during the where volunteers could work from. This soon February Budget Council Meeting changed to a virtual hub, as it was realised that a physical location might not be needed. · Attend Scrutiny days on High Streets and I helped by supplying information on local Heat Networks contacts and by working with other ward Councillors and volunteers to produce and · Attend a Growth and Regeneration deliver a postcard which contained all the Scrutiny visit to Temple Meads to learn about details of the BCC helpline which had now the plans for the overhaul of the station. been set up. We were fortunate in Bristol that during this time our levels of infection were never high, and this helpline was never really pushed to full capacity, although it has done great work supporting a lot of people. 28
So that is where I am after 200 fairly dramatic days as a Councillor. Full Council meetings have resumed, albeit virtually, as have Scrutiny committee meetings, with an initial focus on how the council has done during the pandemic. I am again making contact with officers regarding issues such as · Arranged for the Council to clear a horrific litter scene in the car park of St Anne’s Co-Op Newbridge Road, the bus services and even bigger ideas such as involving Brislington in a Better Neighbourhoods projects, to try to · Helped a local business to gain a Covid-19 grant and rate rebate by appealing an original tackle issues of speeding, rat-running, pavement parking and better walking and cycling decision several times infrastructure. · Taken up many individual queries and Finally, when in May this year all Councillors casework from residents of both Brislington were awarded an increase in their basic East and, following the resignation of Councillor Bradley on health grounds, helped allowance, I said I would donate my increase to various Covid-19 related charities. I have out in West as well. kept this promise and to date have made · Applied for government funding for St Anne’s donations of £50 or more to the following: station from the Restoring Your Railways · Southmead Hospital Charity scheme along with our MP Kerry McCarthy Gradually things have returned to a kind of new normal. I have been able to get more involved with local issues again, and below are some of the things I have tackled during lockdown:
· Set up a Facebook group to keep residents informed of the progress of the development of Brislington Meadows, and held meetings with the Homes England contacts.
· Borderlands refugee charity
· Finally secured an additional 10K of CIL funding for Eastwood Farm play park.
As we move through summer and into Autumn I feel sure that there are going to be even stiffer challenges ahead, and May 2021 elections still seem a very long way away!
· Youth Hostel Association - funding breaks for Key Workers
