Mikes letter
First things first I hope everyone is staying safe and are well! There will be light at the end of the tunnel, a wise man said to me a fews days ago “ Be thankful for what we have and take each day as it comes never lose hope and stay positive” With the media ramping up our anxiety every day maybe we should avoid the news and focus on the positives like more family time at home, getting those DIY jobs done, gardening play some board games or even have a few quiet drinks at home. The world was so fast paced we had very little time for anything. . The other day I went shopping in the morning and on the drive home I found myself driving at a leisurely pace with some music playing singing out loud to myself, not because I have no cares in the world thats so far away from the truth being self-employed. But because I’ll have no control over what happens next. So just enjoy this extended break where you can. Finally a message to our front line key workers especially the NHS bloody well done and a massive thank you to you all. #staypositive Till next month stay at home ,protect the NHS and save lives

Speak to customers and agree like the uncertainty surrounding business today payment plans where necessary. Some guaranteed is 9/11, but even then, things settled down pretty cash in is better than none. quickly from a business perspective. The government are holding daily press conferences and I’d recommending watching them for updates rather than listening to the rumour mill. I’ve sent a couple of these e-mails now, but it seems clear that the government response for small businesses has been underwhelming, particularly in times of such uncertainty. The chancellor will be making an announcement this afternoon which I will report back on this evening. I’m hoping he goes much further in affording businesses some help. I’ll include some information on government initiatives at the bottom of this e-mail, but for now there are steps we can take. Crisis Management - if you have staff then consider whether they are properly briefed in what to do in the current environment, are your policies still appropriate or do they need amending? Communicate proactively. maintaining good relations with staff, customers, suppliers, lenders and other stake holders is likely to help you trade for longer under difficult circumstances and having good relations will help you get back to normal when this crisis is over.

Think very carefully before putting your own money in. It’s bad enough to have a business fail, but to have a business fail and lose your life savings is even worse. Explore the government initiatives to see if they are doing anything to help your business sector.
Explore other opportunities - Jobs that you wouldn’t normally look at may be a lifeline today. if your business has seen a fall in demand, then can your skills be applied in areas that are still in demand? Without wanting to sound melodramatic, it’s about survival at the moment for a lot of businesses so turning your hand to something slightly different for a short time might see you through. So, tradesmen that normally work business to consumer for example might find opportunities to do business to business. Are there new markets your business could enter in to? Finance - As mentioned previously, think very carefully about putting your own money into the business, or indeed borrowing where a director’s guarantee is required. However, preferential loans from lenders, or even renegotiating existing loans may well be possible. Explore all of the government help available and keep checking as government policy is changing daily.
So, these are some tips from me, but what is our government doing to help? here is a link https:// www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-aboutcovid-19/covid-19-support-for-businesses, and the highlights below: •
A Statutory Sick Pay relief package for SMEs
•
A 12-month business rates holiday for all retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in England Small business grant funding of £10,000 for all business in receipt of small business rate relief or rural rate relief
•
•
Grant funding of £25,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000
•
The Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme offering loans of up to £5 million for SMEs through the British Business Bank
•
A new lending facility from the Bank of England to help support liquidity among larger firms, helping them bridge coronavirus disruption to their cash flows through loans
•
The HMRC Time To Pay Scheme
More can be found on the website. As mentioned previously there will be an announcement from the chancellor later today, so keep an eye on that, or keep an eye out for my next update. Stay safe and please feel free to pass this on to any other businesses you know that could use some of the advice.

Councillors Surgery
Here’s some more information about one of the candidates, Andrew. Next month Jos! Andrew was born and raised in Weston-superMare. His father was from Bristol and his mother was from Bath. After graduating from Plymouth and Oxford Universities, he spent a number of years teaching overseas, including Hong Kong and Japan, before finally returning to Bristol in 2008, settling first in Knowle and then Brislington. He currently teaches at an international school in Clifton and cycles to work most days. Andrew has always been interested in politics but didn’t become actively involved until 2015, joining the Lib Dems following one of the most disproportionate general election results in history. Andrew met and joined Councillor Jos Clark as her ward partner in Brislington West and over the last four has got involved in numerous local issues.
The Local and Mayoral Elections that were due to take place on Thursday 7 May this year have been delayed until 2021 due to increasing concerns over the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Jos and Andrew would advise everyone to keep up to date with the latest advice from the NHS, and sincerely wish all local residents and their families well. Jos said, “Andrew and I are naturally disappointed the elections have been postponed, but we totally understand and support the decision, which has been based on advice from independent experts.” Andrew added, “Both Jos and I plan to continue working hard, as we have been doing for the last four years, holding the mayor and his administration to account, and sticking up for Brislington.” Jos and Andrew both live in Brislington, Jos on Callington Road and Andrew on Wick Road, so they are your local candidates and know what the issues are. They work hard all year round, not just at election time, regularly keeping residents updated via social media, magazines such as this one, and their own quarterly newsletter, Focus on Brislington West. They also have a fantastic record of success, such as stopping the Labour mayor from closing local facilities like Jubilee Swimming Pool and Wick Road Library, securing funding for community events and environmental improvements, and campaigning against Labour’s plans to destroy Brislington West with their road-building schemes.
Firstly, the Jubilee Swimming Pool, which the mayor planned to close. Andrew set up a petition website, gathering thousands of signatures and forcing the mayor to perform an embarrassing U-turn. Secondly, the Bristol Arena. Andrew organised an online survey of over 1,000 local people with more than 90% supporting the Temple Meads site. He was able to use this information to contradict the Mayor during his first speech at Full Council. Thirdly, the Callington Road Link. Andrew started a petition, which currently has around 2,200 signatures. He also chaired a local meeting, which was attended by around 100 residents, got articles in the local press, made a campaign video, which has been viewed by over 1,500 people on You Tube, and spoke at Full Council. Finally, SPRING, the Sandy Park Road Improvement Neighbourhood Group. Along with Jos, Andrew was a founder member of this local group. Andrew said, “We’ve organised several litter picks, run incredibly popular community events, and successfully bid for Community Infrastructure Levy funding for planters to improve the street scene along Sandy Park Road.” Clearly, as a local activist Andrew has achieved a great deal, but as your local councillor, he’ll be able to achieve so much more.

COACH DRIVERS TRANSFER TO AMBULANCES A group of coach drivers from South West travel business Bakers Dolphin are to work as ambulance drivers following the cancellation of all national and international travel due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ten drivers who would normally be taking people on holidays this week began retraining for their new role today (March 23) after an agreement was struck between Bakers Dolphin and Bristol Ambulance Emergency Medical Services.
“Bristol Ambulance need experienced drivers to support them as they expect demand to soar over the forthcoming weeks. We set up a straight-forward agreement where we retain the drivers as employees and Bristol Ambulance have a contract with us top supply them.
“Like most other businesses we are looking at ways that we can get through this and to retain and support our employees so that they can come back to work with us when this is all over. It has been an incredibly stressful time with thousands of cancelA further 10 drivers will undergo training later in the ations so far and our office staff are systematically week with the 20 drivers providing cover in four-day working through dealing with alternative arrangeshifts. ments for customers. Bristol Ambulance (EMS) based in St Philips, Bristol, has a fleet of 95 ambulances and they will be supporting the NHS in the weeks to come as cases of Covid-19 rise in the Bristol area putting a strain on the health service. Other Bakers Dolphin drivers will be providing school coaches for key workers children that are still attending school to enable their parents to go to work. Bakers Dolphin Managing Director Max Fletcher said: “With all international and UK travel in lockdown until at least the end of April we have 50 drivers with no work and a business with very little income.”
“Our business is over 100 years old and helped out in wars in the past providing transport, so this is another chapter in our history.” Rob Johnson, Director of Operations at Bristol Ambulance (EMS) said: “It was important for us to find local drivers that are available right away as our own dedicated team will not be able to work all the hours we are expecting to keep up with the demand for our services. We also have to ensure that our staff are able to self-isolate if a family member is ill without impacting our service delivery

COUNCILLOR’S CORNER As I write this, Bristol and the country is in a state of ‘lockdown’ with severe restrictions of movement and directions from the Government. By the time you read this the situation will undoubtedly have changed again – hopefully for the better but we can’t say yet. We are in the middle of a public health crisis the like of which we have not known in our lifetimes, and it is right that such drastic measures have been introduced. In our modern age we have so much up to date information and data on how the virus is spreading in our city, nationally and worldwide compared to the past, and we are fortunate that we can and should learn and respond from experiences of other countries. We do have an incredible body of scientists and a research tradition to be proud of and so hopefully our health system will, in time, help find a solution to this crisis. Millions of lives will be affected but we can help prevent deaths and suffering by abiding by the guidance provided. One of the ways we are trying to save lives is to ask the older and most vulnerable amongst us to stay inside for an extended period of time. In order to facilitate this over the coming weeks the council are looking to set up a series of Community Hubs, including one in my ward of Brislington East, to help collate and distribute food parcels to help the elderly and vulnerable. I hope that by the time you read this, this hub and others may already be in operation. There have been a number of volunteer groups set up all over South Bristol, and these hubs will be looking to use these volunteers to deliver the parcels to people, in as safe a way as possible. I want to say a big “thank you” to all those who have already volunteered – it truly does show the best side of us as a society. Cllr.Tim.Rippington@bristol.gov.ukbrislingtonlabour@gmail.com

A message from Slimming World Founder and Chair, Margaret Miles Bramwell. #thatfeeling To our treasured Slimming World members everywhere
As I write this, our teams are working behind the scenes to develop temporary ‘virtual’ community options that will ensure we can bring a remote Slimming World service to you at home. Our aim is to bring these to you next week (w/c 23rd March) if we possibly can - because we know that for many of you, the thought of trying to manage your weight alone at home, when life feels as though it’s been turned upside down is a frightening thought. Your Garden In April
Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. April showers are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.
The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest. Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should be newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after mowing with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Plant of the month: Rhododendron Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however and will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost. 21

Aquarius Jan 20-Feb 18 Clear communication would be a real asset to you at this time. There is something you have either put on the back burner or chosen to ignore but it is something you would be wiser to deal with at this time. If your home is feeling a bit tired, you can still make your home look amazing without breaking the bank. We’ve found some tips for you to try out.
Hang up some art
From framed family photos to DIY prints by the kids, an artwork wall can really make your house feel more like a home. The key is knowing how to hang up your picture and making them fit into the space you’ve chosen so keep playing around until it looks just right.
Update old fixtures
You’d be surprised how cheap it is to swap in some old fixtures for some new shiny ones without having to go crazy on the £££s. Door knobs, drawer handles and light switches can become to look quite tired due to daily wear and tear, so you’ll be surprised how much this little change and impact the room.
Swap your throw pillows
Change out your old throw pillows for some colourful and fuller ones to make your living space feel like it’s straight out of an interior design magazine. If you don’t want to replace all your pillows, just buy new crisp and funky covers instead.

Let in the light
A well-lit room is very important if you want the space to feel inviting. Take care not to block natural light sources, but if that isn’t possible, having good light sources can be a great substitute. Try adding a table lamp and up-lighters around the room to see the difference immediately.
Throw in a mirror or two
Make your space look even bigger by hanging up some strategically placed mirrors. Using a large or floor length mirror will reflect the room back at you making it feel twice the size – definitely cheaper than adding an extension!
Clean and clutter-free
With many people leading increasingly busier lives, sometimes the cleaning chores fall by the wayside. However, if you put off the dusting one too many times or leave the pile of magazines to grow on the coffee table, your home can start to feel dingy and unloved.
Update your colour schemes
Add some natural colour to your walls, choose greys, creams, light shades of green or blue etc. Wood flooring can also match most natural colour schemes so go wild and experiment with different types of flooring even carpets and rugs.
So clear the clutter, give it a good clean and enjoy that ‘new home’ feel again.

In a direct response to the latest Government guidance on COVID-19, Bristol City Council will temporarily close its museums from tomorrow and all city libraries from Thursday (19 March 2020). The closures for both services is temporary and initially until 1 May 2020.
“We must act in the interests of public safety first and foremost, which is why we are introducing these temporary closures in response to the latest Government guidance. We recognise the importance and value of these public services to communities, but they are also social spaces with a high level of interaction. “Please don’t forget the online services we have available for both museums, the archives and our libraries. There are lots of e books and audio available 24/7 and we are investing in immediate improvements to http://www.librarieswest.org.uk from tomorrow to enhance our online services.” Libraries will not be open to accept returned books – please do not leave them on the doorstep as they could be stolen or damaged with no one there to collect them. Go to the museums website or the council’s library pages. The Bristol City Council website now has a hub page with all the latest up to date information. It can be viewed here.

These little checks in advance, you might be able to save £££'s. Horn This one is nice and simple, but believe it or not, your car will fail its MOT if the horn is faulty, so make sure yours works…beep beep! Oil Make sure your oil is topped up to the correct level or the test centre can refuse to carry out the MOT on your vehicle. This is because they will be unable to test your emissions. How to: Grab a rag and pop your bonnet. Locate the dipstick (usually with a yellow or orange plastic handle) and pull out. Give it a wipe and put back in. Remove one more time and check the reading. There should be a min and max mark at the end of the dipstick. If it’s below the minimum then top up with manufacturer approved oil. Oil and filter changes are recommended every 10,000 miles or 12 months (check your vehicle handbook to be sure) – basically whichever comes first. These can be done quite easily at home and require minimal equipment but be warned…it can be messy. Exterior Lights According to the RAC, 18.9% of cars fail their MOT for something as minor as a blown bulb. It’s a super easy check to do by switching on all your lights and walking around your car to see if they’re all working. If any don’t work, you can replace these yourself for a fraction of what a garage will charge. When it comes to the brake lights, you may need to enlist some help from a friend or family member. Alternatively, a reflective surface such as a window would be just as effective. Number plates Not only do your number plates need to be visible and in good condition but they also need to be up to DVLA standard. That means no patterned backgrounds or italic fonts and even the letter spacing must be correct. If your number plate doesn’t conform to these rules then it’s an instant MOT fail as well as a possible £1,000 fine if caught by police.
36
Warning lights Check that all the dashboard lights come on when you start the car then disappear after a few seconds. If any of the lights stay lit then arrange to have your motor to be checked over. If you feel confident, you can try resolving them yourself eg. If the oil light is on, is your oil fully topped up? Tyres On average, 10% of motorists get an MOT failure due to their tyres not being up to scratch. Spend a bit of time checking each tyre carefully for lumps, bulges or cuts and double check that the tread is road legal. A simple way check the tread depth is to do the 20p test. If you put a 20p into your tread and the inner edge can’t be seen then your tyres are legal. If you can see the edge then you will need to think about getting new tyres. Clean car Your car won’t fail because it’s a little messy but if it’s filthy inside or out (or both) then the garage can refuse to test it on health and safety grounds. Research found that over 1,000 drivers were refused an MOT because their vehicles were that dirty or inaccessible. So when you take your car in, make sure that both number plates are visible, the lights are clean and that the interior is clutter free. Windscreen Apart from the obvious cracks and chips, another common failure is having an obscured driving view with things like hanging air fresheners, stickers and phone cradles being the biggest culprits. Make sure these objects are removed before your MOT to prevent an unnecessary fail. Also, its good practice to ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and your screen wash is fully topped up. Mirrors To pass your MOT, you need to have a minimum of one offside mirror and one interior mirror but its good practice to have all three in working order this means no cracks that impair your view.
