Mikes letter
Welcome to our weekly online magazine. Lets kick things off this week with thanking all the key workers out there who are keeping the country going. Thank you!! So lets get to it... Who’s had enough of this lockdown then? I completely understand the reason for the government putting us in this safety net. Only allowing us to do certain things in our day to day lives, but I really feel for the business that can not run at moment due to being in furlough or just not being able to operate due to the restrictions. I get this is for the safety of the public and so the NHS doesn’t get overwhelmed with new cases of coronavirus but I would really like to see the government put some sort of time scale to the lockdown instead of stringing us along. On a happier note Happy Easter to everyone and I am gonna say it only once “Stay at home please” Do not be tempted to go the beach etc. Please think of the rest of us that are doing our bit to control the spread of the virus. Again have a fantastic long weekend and don’t eat to much

BRISTOL NURSERY CHILDREN SPREAD JOY WITH RAINBOWS
Children from Mama Bear’s Day Nurseries across Bristol have been busy creating bright and colourful rainbow pictures as a symbol of love and hope amidst the coronavirus crisis. The children of key workers, who are still attending settings across the city, have joined in with the #chasetherainbow movement and created rainbow pictures to be displayed in the nursery windows or outside on the settings’ fences and gates. Nursery managers say the activity has been enjoyed by all so they will now be taking part in the latest craze to display and ‘hunt’ teddy bears. Mama Bear’s owner Tony Driffield said “The children have loved creating the rainbows which have helped to bring fun and colour to our nursery windows. “We also wanted to do something to brighten the day of passers-by and show our appreciation and gratitude to all key workers during this testing time. “We only have children of key workers and vulnerable children in attendance at nursery at the moment and they have created some beautiful art. "We’re looking forward to now taking part in the bear hunt, inspired by the children’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, where we will display our stuffed animals in the windows for other children to spot.”
Mama Bear’s is a family-run group with 24 nursery settings in Bristol, Somerset and Devon catering for children aged three-months to five-years. Following Government guidelines to close schools and nurseries to all children except those of key workers or those who are vulnerable, Mama Bear’s has temporarily closed and merged some settings. The group this week announced that it will not be charging parents who pay for their sessions and are unable to send their children to nursery, anything for the month of May.
Tony said: “These are difficult times for everyone but we are doing our upmost to support our parents, both key workers and otherwise, as well as our dedicated staff, who themselves are key workers and doing a wonderful job.” More information on Mama Bear’s Day Nursery can be found at www.mamabear.co.uk.

Developers work with Council to bring The Chocolate Factory to life Developers have worked with Bristol City Council to ensure a community being created at The Chocolate Factory in Greenbank, Bristol will have the right mix of homes. Generator South West is in the final stages of demolition of sections of the old factory and transformation is about to begin to provide 140 new homes, which will now include 36 shared ownership homes, a public square, workspace for local businesses and a community hub.
“The Victorian factory once stood at the heart of the community and our sensitively considered design respects the industrial heritage of the site and, when complete, will place the site back at the heart of the Greenbank community creating public open space, a café/bar, workspace for Bristol businesses and a community hub.”
Councillor Paul Smith, Bristol City Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for housing welcomed the latest development at the factory. He said: “It’s great news that, despite a Planning Inspector’s Despite a ruling by the Planning Inspectorate following an Appeal, planning was approved without decision that the site required no affordable homes, 36 will now be built at The Chocolate Factory, any affordable homes on the site, but the Greenbank. A message from Slimming World Founder and Chair, Margaret Miles Bramwell. #thatfeeling To our treasured Slimming World members everywhere By now, you’ll probably have heard from your Consultant that, following the latest government guidance to businesses, we are, temporarily, suspending groups all over the UK and Ireland, with immediate effect. During this global crisis, we’ve done what Slimming World has always done - and will always do. We’ve put you, our wonderful communities of members, at the heart of every decision we make. Wherever it’s been humanly possible, we’ve stayed open, we’ve been there to support you and we’ve taken extra measures to protect your health and wellbeing. We’ve done this because we know a Slimming World group is so much more than a place to get help with your weight, so much more than finding that help to become slimmer, fitter and healthier. In the whole world of help for slimmers, there’s nowhere like a Slimming World group. A Slimming World group is place where people find compassion and understanding, friendship and fun, a shot of motivation and the confidence to carry on, even when times get tough. Thanks to you and our wonderful Consultants - working together - our groups give people hope in a world that can sometimes feel full of desperation.
As I write this, our teams are working behind the scenes to develop temporary ‘virtual’ community options that will ensure we can bring a remote Slimming World service to you at home. Our aim is to bring these to you next week (w/c 23rd March) if we possibly can - because we know that for many of you, the thought of trying to manage your weight alone at home, when life feels as though it’s been turned upside down is a frightening thought. And continuing to nourish our bodies with healthy, family-friendly, home-cooked meals has never been more important. Whilst a remote group will never be the same as your physical Slimming World group, technology means that we can maintain connections even when we’re physically isolated from each other. We are searching for the best way to do this, whether we use social media, a specialised online service such as Slimming Word Online or something more intimate and supervised so we can continue to support our members while not abandoning those most vulnerable in our society. We are searching for a Slimming World solution, where we can give each other motivation, practical help and advice, tips, hope – and make each other laugh with that famous sense of humour you possess. We will draw on our courage and strength and help others do the same. We will raise your spirits when you’re down and let you raise ours when we falter. We may be apart but we do not have to be alone. Despite the difficulties we are about to face, we will face them together and, with our combined energy and creativity, determination and compassion, we will all resurface stronger, braver and fitter than ever.
We know (we’ve witnessed it so many times) our groups bring out the best in people. We recognise and applaud you, as you show that same compassion and kindness to others. Your warmth and kindness shines out and lights up the world. True to form, that is exactly what you’ve been doing throughout these past few weeks of uncertainty. And I can’t begin to tell you how happy and proud that’s made every single one of us at Slimming World. So, while we will stay exactly in line with all the advice set out by our countries’ leaders in their efforts to keep us as healthy as possible during this unprecedented crisis, we will therefore be suspending our groups for the time being. We will absolutely not be giving up on YOU or our life-changing, life-saving organisation. Not once, in the past 50 years, have we ever done that. Not once has a tough time beaten Slimming World and it’s not about to beat us now!
12
Stay with us, because we will always stay with you. With all my love always, to you our members, your Consultants and your families, on behalf of the great family of Slimming World.

Support needed to keep Marie Curie Nurses on the frontline in the South West, through the Coronavirus crisis Across the UK, Marie Curie is gearing up to care for hundreds of additional dying patients requiring end of life care, in order to relieve the unprecedented pressure on the NHS during the Coronavirus crisis. With the number of cases rapidly increasing in the South West, local Marie Curie Nursing teams are working harder than ever. Given the choice, people overwhelmingly say they would prefer to die in their own home, or in a hospice, rather than a hospital. End of life patients who do not want to be in hospital need to be moved to a more appropriate setting, as beds in critical care units are urgently required for patients who need lifesaving treatment for Coronavirus. As experts in providing end of life care in the community, Marie Curie can help, but only if it continues to raise the donations it needs to fund its vital work. Last year the charity provided 175,000 hours of direct care for over 3000 people in the South West, allowing them to die at home where they wanted to be. Marie Curie needs to raise £50,000 a week to continue to run its essential frontline services across the South West, at a time when its ability to generate this money has been seriously comprom ised. Natalie Garland, Marie Curie South West Fundraising Manager, said: “When the NHS and public need us most, we are facing huge struggles raising vital funds. Along with the cancellation of hundreds of high street and supermarket collections, we’re now losing income from the closure of our charity shops and from cancelled fundraising events such as the Padstow to Rock Swim - which raised over £80,000 for us last year. My message to those in the South West, please donate if you can.” Marie Curie’s Chief Executive Matthew Reed said: “At this time of national emergency, Marie Curie Nurses and frontline staff are needed more than ever as the NHS is put under ever greater strain. “Sadly, some people’s lives will be shortened by Coronavirus, so the need for end of life care will be greater. Marie Curie can meet this need, and in doing so will help free up intensive care beds needed for Coronavirus patients.
16
“But just as we want to help, our income has been decimated. We need donations urgently to keep our Nurses and Hospice staff on the frontline. “Unlike other healthcare providers, Marie Curie is reliant on donations from the public to survive. Every week the charity needs to raise £2.5million to care for the tens of thousands of people who require nursing and hospice care. At the moment, our ability to fundraise is seriously compromised. Events are being cancelled, and we’ve had to close our Shops. That is why we have launched an emergency appeal to make up the shortfall, and ensure the charity can care for more dying patients, support the NHS and ultimately save lives in the weeks and months ahead. “We are all in this crisis together and already we are seeing how the public in this country is rising to support each other and the most vulnerable. Please donate now.” Donate online at: mariecurie.org.uk/emergency Text NURSE to 70633 to help us reach the families who need us. Your Garden In April
Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. April showers are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.
20
The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest. Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should be newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after mowing with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Plant of the month: Rhododendron Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however and will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

FEARS FOR INCREASE IN DOMESTIC ABUSE DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN Experts have warned that an extended Covid-19 lockdown could lead to more cases of domestic abuse in households across the UK.
Specialist family lawyer Hannah Bridgwood says last year on average three people a week were killed as a result of domestic abuse and this year’s statistics are expected to increase as a result of the self-isolation measures put in place by the government to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Indeed the Domestic Abuse Helpline has reported a 25% increase in calls and online requests for help. Following similar trends in other locked down countries, which have seen a spike in domestic abuse cases during recent weeks and months, the Police are on high alert for these situations and Hannah says despite the lockdown solicitors are on hand and can act fast to help. Hannah, an Associate Solicitor with national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP, said: “These measures are absolutely necessary to slow down the spread of this deadly virus but in times of crisis such as these, whilst we are socially distancing ourselves, we must not forget the most vulnerable in society. “Something which has not been widely spoken about is that the measures provide for people leaving their home in exceptional circumstances and one of these is to ‘avoid or escape risk of injury or harm’. “So, if you are in fear for your safety and that of your children, you are able to leave your household to get help and seek refuge. “If you are in immediate danger, you should never hesitate to call 999 straight away. If you are unable to speak because you are scared your abuser will hear, you can dial 55 during your call; this will alert the police that the call is genuine, extremely urgent and will be prioritised.” It is also important to note that there are exceptions to the lockdown guidelines including people being permitted to leave the house if they feel they or their children are in danger.
22
The government have recognised that sufferers of domestic abuse may be feeling particularly vulnerable at this time as Home Secretary Priti Patel has pledged to crack down on those using the lockdown to make their victims feel 'especially isolated, vulnerable and exposed'. Hannah continued: “Solicitors can help, the Courts remain open and are able to deal with emergency applications quickly. We can apply for non-molestation orders which are injunctions designed to protect you and your children from further harm; we can also apply for occupation orders to get your abuser out of the family home. “It is worth noting that if your abuser pays the bills and rent/mortgage, the Court can also order that they can carry on paying. We offer telephone and video calls so that we can act quickly to get you the protection you need. “Refuges remain open and are able to support you, there are also many charities that remain open and are able to help. I would encourage anyone currently in fear of domestic abuse to reach out. “For anyone who wants to help their friends, neighbours and those in the community who they think may be suffering domestic abuse, the guidance is clear that you cannot have visitors in your home. Instead, contact the police, get legal advice, reach out to the domestic abuse charities or contact me directly.” Hannah Bridgwood is an Associate within the family and divorce team at Clarke Willmott, a national law firm with offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton and Taunton. April Horoscopes
Aquarius Jan 20-Feb 18 Clear communication would be a real asset to you at this time. There is something you have either put on the back burner or chosen to ignore but it is something you would be wiser to deal with at this time. Whatever is going on for you that is difficult, remember you have a lot of resilience and inner strength, and you will find the right way to deal with things. Keywords: Clear communication & Resilience Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20 You feel that something may not have been dealt with fairly, this could be a situation with a family member or someone close to you. Step back and try and see the situation from all sides and try to bring some change and balance back. Keywords: Fairness & Change Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 If you are involved in meetings at this time they may not run as smoothly as you would like or not even happen at all. If the situation feels difficult remember to keep calm. You may also feel time for spring-cleaning, both on the physical and emotional levels. Keywords: Calm & Clearing Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 You could get one of those wonderful lightbulb moments, when something inspiring or enlightening suddenly makes sense. You may find the need to bring some harmony to a difficult situation. There could be some small but interesting changes that are coming your way. Keywords: Sudden realisation & Changes Gemini May 21 - June 20 Be careful in situations that could become volatile, especially in communication, try to be a listener as much as possible. Otherwise things could get into a bit of a tangle. Know that you can deal with and rise above a difficult situation. Keywords: Listen & Inner wisdom Cancer June 21 - July 22 Relationships are a high point this month, as well as possible a small refresh in the home. If something is a bit hard going at the moment, you will find that you will have the strength and endurance to go through this relatively plain sailing Keywords: Opportunities & Relationships
Leo July 23 - Aug 22 If something isn’t moving as quickly as you would like, this could be a good time to sort and clear what needs doing. As this can make way for new things and ideas. Keywords: Clearing & New ideas and things Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Balance and harmony are very important to you, somebody doesn’t always bring your sensitivity to the fore, as this will be an asset in this situation. You may also think of starting a new interest, that will involve collecting things or gathering information. Keywords: Sensitivity, connecting & Gathering Libra Sept 23 - Oct 22 It does seem as though study is on your mind at present. You may find yourself either researching or seeking information regarding things of interests to you. You may also feel the need to clear things both emotionally and within your living spaces, as you feel there maybe new things on the way. There is possibly an issue that you will have to deal with later in the month. Keywords: Study & Clearing Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 This may not be one of the easiest times, as you feel as though you need to be on your guard. A situation would be worth stepping back from, and trying to see it from a different perspective. This month would be good for you to follow those instinctive feelings, and work with your intuition. Remember also you are a lot stronger than you think. Keywords: Protection & Intuition Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 There is something you’ve been putting off that you need to sort out and this would be a good time to do so. You can do the same with some spring cleaning, both in your physical environment and possibly emotionally too.Once you have sorted a few things out it will give you the space to be able to carry on with some hobbies and a few relaxing things that you have not had time for. Capricorn Dec 22 0 Jan 19 Your social life won’t be busy this month. A few things look to change for you, so be prepared. THE FORCE MAJEURE MAY BE WITH YOU
A new free easy-to-navigate online guide for businesses and individuals to consult over concerns or challenges that they face in the light of the coronavirus pandemic has been launched. Businesses are being challenged in ways that they will never have envisaged, in relation to their employees, suppliers and customers during the coronavirus outbreak and Bristol-headquartered national law firm Clarke Willmott has set up an online hub to provide support. Individuals are also being impacted by the changes with everything from moving house or writing a Will to having fertility treatment subject to disruption. Martin Palmer, Director of Business Development and Marketing, at Clarke Willmott said: “We appreciate that businesses are being bombarded with information and are having to take critical decisions quickly. “Our COVID-19 hub was set up to cut through the noise so that business owners can quickly and easily find the answers that they need in the area of business they are working on. “For years people have been happily signing contracts that mention “force majeure” - those unforeseeable circumstances that may prevent someone fulfilling their obligations. But most people never believed they would become relevant. It is almost inevitable that the current situation will mean people having to use those previously little-known clauses.
26
“Most people had never heard the word furlough until a few weeks ago, and certainly wouldn’t have discussed such a thing with their staff. Now businesses are navigating their way through this very tricky new status with employees. “There is also information for individuals that answer some of the most common questions about their legal standing in these difficult times.” The Clarke Willmott Covid-19 hub is designed to support with self-help advice for the majority of circumstances that may arise as a result of the Government instructions to businesses and restrictions on everyday life announced in recent weeks. It also contains links through to specialist experts within the Clarke Willmott team and ways to seek further clarification by telephone or email if it is needed or to book a consultation. It is simple to navigate and people do not have to enter any details about themselves to find the information they need but there is a facility to sign up for free short email updates on specific areas of interest as the Covid19 situation continues to develop. The hub can be found on the first page of the Clarke Willmott website: www.clarkewillmott.com.

Music on your doorstep As a local self employed musician I am hoping to put my skills to use for people going through self isolation, whilst simultaneously keeping my business afloat during a time of limited support for the self employed. I’m offering 20 minute live music performances at the front door of peoples’ houses that they can either purchase for themselves, or for a friend or relative they think would appreciate it. I particularly think this would be of use to people who have birthdays or anniversaries coming up and are not able to celebrate them as they would like. In the city of Bristol I’m offering these at a flat rate of £30, with negotiable rates for those further afield. They can be arranged by contacting me through the details below or direct through my Facebook page. They are of course weather dependant, but in every other sense I am flexible about time. If people let me know as much as they can in advance about what kind of music the people I’m playing for like then I can do my best to tailor my performances to the audience. Who is at risk ? We can all catch COVID-19, however those of us who have pre-existing health conditions and older people are thought to have a higher risk of catching coronavirus. If you have long-term health problems, it is most likely you will be feeling anxious at this time tough time. Concerns may be heightened by latest figures which show more that an unprecedented amount of people have been tested positive for coronavirus in Bristol. With this in mind here is what experts are advising us:
Approximately 1.5m people at the greatest risk of complications, such as patients on immunosuppressant therapy or treatment for cancer, are being told to isolate at home for 12 weeks to protect themselves. If you think you are in this highest risk category and have not received a letter from the NHS yet or been contacted by your GP, get in touch with your local practice or hospital doctor by phone or online. Those living with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes could be at greater risk of more severe symptoms If you have diabetes and you have symptoms such as cough, high temperature and feeling short of breath, you need to monitor your blood sugar closely. If you routinely monitor your blood glucose, on the advice of your doctor, you should continue to do this more often.
Who is at risk? Higher risk people include those who are over 70, regardless if they have a medical condition or not, and people under 70 with any of the below underlying health problems. •
• • • •
• •
•
• •
Chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or bronchitis Chronic heart disease, such as heart failure Chronic kidney disease Chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis Chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, a learning disability or cerebral palsy Diabetes Problems with your spleen - for example, sickle cell disease or if you have had your spleen removed Weakened immune system as the result of conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or medicines such as steroid tablets or chemotherapy Seriously overweight (a BMI of 40 or above) Pregnant
We are all being told to follow social-distancing to help reduce the chance of catching or spreading COVID-19. People in higher risk category are strongly advised to follow the governments advice.
38
If you don't check your blood sugar levels at home, make sure you are aware of the signs of hyperglycaemia, which include: • • • •
Very thirsty Passing more urine than normal (especially at night) Headaches Tiredness and lethargy
You should call your doctor if you have these symptoms. There is no evidence yet that pregnant women (and their babies) are at any increased risk if they catch coronavirus, but the government have said mums-to-be need to be extra cautious for now. They are among people who need to be particularly stringent in minimising their social contact, says the official advice.

They are now “stretched” because of the impact of coronavirus, but they urged people to continue to report fly-tipping, especially as Bristol City Council’s rubbish tips are no longer open to the public. Bristol Waste has managed to maintain waste and recycling collections that are pretty close to normal service. Bin men are being stretched, which means from 3rd April they are no longer going to be able to return for missed collections. This means you will have to get your bins and recycling out after 6pm the night before or before 6am the morning of collection. The crews will still return to collect assisted clinical waste or chargeable collections if these are reported. In Bristol black bin waste is collected every two weeks, while recycling and food waste is collected weekly.

We asked a local bin man on his rounds last week a question about this he replied “We will do all we can to make sure collections are not missed but strict social distancing measures have been put in place across their sites, so rest assured the bin men’s health and safety is being looked after. He also said we also need people to continue to report incidents of fly-tipping so they can keep up enforcements against those who choose to dump their waste on the rest of us. Better that they have a job when this as per the government guidance. Speak to customers and agree like the uncertainty surrounding business today payment plans where necessary. Some guaranteed is 9/11, but even then, things settled down pretty cash in is better than none. quickly from a business perspective. The government are holding daily press conferences and I’d recommending watching them for updates rather than listening to the rumour mill. I’ve sent a couple of these e-mails now, but it seems clear that the government response for small businesses has been underwhelming, particularly in times of such uncertainty. The chancellor will be making an announcement this afternoon which I will report back on this evening. I’m hoping he goes much further in affording businesses some help. I’ll include some information on government initiatives at the bottom of this e-mail, but for now there are steps we can take. Crisis Management - if you have staff then consider whether they are properly briefed in what to do in the current environment, are your policies still appropriate or do they need amending? Communicate proactively. maintaining good relations with staff, customers, suppliers, lenders and other stake holders is likely to help you trade for longer under difficult circumstances and having good relations will help you get back to normal when this crisis is over.

Think very carefully before putting your own money in. It’s bad enough to have a business fail, but to have a business fail and lose your life savings is even worse. Explore the government initiatives to see if they are doing anything to help your business sector.
Explore other opportunities - Jobs that you wouldn’t normally look at may be a lifeline today. if your business has seen a fall in demand, then can your skills be applied in areas that are still in demand? Without wanting to sound melodramatic, it’s about survival at the moment for a lot of businesses so turning your hand to something slightly different for a short time might see you through. So, tradesmen that normally work business to consumer for example might find opportunities to do business to business. Are there new markets your business could enter in to? Finance - As mentioned previously, think very carefully about putting your own money into the business, or indeed borrowing where a director’s guarantee is required. However, preferential loans from lenders, or even renegotiating existing loans may well be possible. Explore all of the government help available and keep checking as government policy is changing daily.
So, these are some tips from me, but what is our government doing to help? here is a link https:// www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-aboutcovid-19/covid-19-support-for-businesses, and the highlights below: •
A Statutory Sick Pay relief package for SMEs
•
A 12-month business rates holiday for all retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in England Small business grant funding of £10,000 for all business in receipt of small business rate relief or rural rate relief
•
•
Grant funding of £25,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000
•
The Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme offering loans of up to £5 million for SMEs through the British Business Bank
•
A new lending facility from the Bank of England to help support liquidity among larger firms, helping them bridge coronavirus disruption to their cash flows through loans
•
The HMRC Time To Pay Scheme
More can be found on the website. As mentioned previously there will be an announcement from the chancellor later today, so keep an eye on that, or keep an eye out for my next update. Stay safe and please feel free to pass this on to any other businesses you know that could use some of the advice.

Broadband Traffic • Following the Government’s directive for people to stay at home at the moment , we have seen unprecedented demand across our mobile, fixed telephony and broadband networks. Whilst demand continues to rise at unprecedented levels, our network remains reliable and strong, and we’re within our capacity thresholds and are continuing to service our customers in these difficult times.
•
Key network statistics include: Voice Traffic • •
•
•
An increase of nearly 20% in mobile call traffic on Monday (23 March) versus the previous Monday. On a regional basis, we saw a 24% increase in mobile calls made and received in Glasgow, 14% increase in Bristol, 12% in Birmingham, 8% in Manchester and more than 2% in London. Across the UK, mobile voice traffic has increased by 56% in the last two weeks.
Broadband traffic has grown by 15% during the day as more people work and study from home. Average daytime usage now mirrors a typical Sunday – typically the busiest day of the week with customers streaming films and TV episodes. As customers turn to technologies such as WiFi Calling, we have seen a 28% increase in Voice over the Internet (VoIP) usage at the start of this week. In contrast, mobile music streaming traffic reduced by around 16% from the start of the week as customers moved from listening to music on the move to the home over their broadband link.
We keep constant watch on traffic over our networks and are adding extra capacity every day to ensure our customers keep connected. This follows an investment of around £4.5 billion in our network over the past five years – the largest in our 35-year history.
