Mikes letter Welcome to this weeks edition of Direct Local and what a roller coater of a few days we had! Where shall we begin, lets start with the government u turn in the exam results. Isn’t is funny how once the government was put under massive pressure by the teachers and student of pretty much all the schools and colleges in the country to amend the algorithm that created so many incorrect exam results, that within a matter of days decided that all the time and money that was spent on the dam software was pointless and reverted to the teachers decision. And rightly so as they know their students abilities better than any computer. Which leads me on to what other algorithms they have concocted over the last few month are incorrect too and here’s a thought could they have got Covid-19 all wrong too right from the start? I’d love to here your thoughts on this whole subject and I do apologies now if I am out of order in any way. As always my contact details are on the left.

BIG ENERGY FIRMS LOSING OUT IN ENERGY EXODUS
The Big 6 Energy suppliers have lost more than 400,000 customers since June 1st As the UK falls into recession there has been a large increase in the number of households switching away from the Big Six energy providers in order to save on their bills, according to Nailsea, Bristol-based auto-switching specialists Flipper. “Nearly 1,000,000 people have switched energy supplier since June 1 and more than 400,000 of those moved away from the Big Six energy firms that dominate the market,” said Mark Gutteridge, CEO of auto-switching website Flipper. “This is an increase of 25% compared to the same time last year, while the number of people switching back to a large supplier has fallen by 32%”.
They saw customers numbers drop dramatically and have lost more than 8 MILLION households to the new entrants over the past 5 years. Flipper are supporting thousands of households across the UK by helping them find the best energy deal for their needs and while saving money remains the major factor, being with a supplier that offers great service or being on a green energy tariff are also important for many customers. “A typical household can save around £330 a year by moving from a Standard tariff with a Big 6 supplier to a new deal with a really good mid-size supplier.” Unlike other auto-switching or comparison sites Flipper is independent and takes no commission or referral fees, meaning it can “flip” its members to any energy provider based on price, customer service and value for money. Its members pay a £30 annual subscription; however, no money is payable until Flipper finds a deal saving at least £50 off the current energy bill.
“People are now seeing the impact of the increase in home energy usage since lockdown in their bills and are taking action. And with pressure on Until 2013 the Big 6 supplied energy to 98% of all UK households but, as more suppliers entered the energy market, household budgets expected to increase in the coming months as the furlough For more information go to www.flipper. scheme ends, we expect this trend to community continue.”

Parents encouraged to register nursery children for September term Parents of babies, toddlers and pre-school children are being encouraged to register their children for a place at nursery following the re-opening of settings in the UK.
Childcare providers say the benefits young children will gain from being in a social setting are huge and with additional safety measures in place parents should feel confident about enrolling their children. Tony Driffield, who owns the Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-school group, along with wife Bev, an expert in early education, says children who have been kept in lockdown since March will thrive in a more dynamic environment. “I’ve really felt for the children and families who have been at home since March. It is important for children to experience new surroundings, have interaction with their peers and enjoy activities that parents can’t always provide at home,” said Tony. “With schools returning to the ‘new normal’ in September there is no reason nursery children shouldn’t also reap the rewards of early education. “It is particularly important for children due to start primary school next year. Experiencing a year in pre-school where we begin their educational journey and encourage them to build relationships with others, will help children in many ways become confident and ready for that vital next step.
6
“We believe the benefits of nursery are incredibly valuable to a child’s development - socially, emotionally, educationally and physically. Children who have been kept in isolation for months need the support we can give them to start getting back to normality.” Mama Bear’s is a family-run nursery group with 24 settings across Bristol, Somerset and Devon. Providing a home-from-home environment for children, the settings cater for ages 3 months to five years. All 24 Mama Bear’s sites are accepting registrations for children over the summer and for the September term. Tony continued: “Since we reopened our doors to all children in June the demand has slowly but surely increased as parents feel more confident and are happy with the safety measures we have put in place. There’s also the practical element in that many parents are returning to work so childcare for some is essential. “Places are quickly filling for our September term, which is a fantastic sign of parents’ confidences growing. Those who haven’t secured a place for their child yet should give us a call and our nursery managers can talk through everything including our new Covid policies.” For more information and contact details of each individual Mama Bear’s Day Nursery visit www.mamabear.co.uk

NOCO Hair named as entrepreneurial star in HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2020 after securing two finalist places Even in the face of adversity this year, independent salon NOCO Hair in Bristol has not only weathered the storm but has been recognised as a finalist for two awards in HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2020.
Showing strength across the board, NOCO stood out for its proven business growth, customer care and marketing strategy, as well as its understanding of how to deal with complaints. Further setting them apart was the salon’s training policy, and their eye for The Independent Salon Business - Newcomer of assessing performance and making the Year award, recognises the top six British improvements. hairdressing entrepreneurs who have made their business dream a reality and launched HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards, a successful salon. Commenting on the announcement, Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards said; “This year has required hair salon owners to adapt, think creatively and showcase tremendous amounts of resilience. For new businesses, I can only imagine how nerve wrecking the last few months have been, but to be named as a finalist in both the Independent Salon - Business Newcomer of the Year and Salon of the Year categories confirms just how exceptional NOCO is. They have clearly poured their heart and soul into building their business from the ground up, a mark of incredible entrepreneurial flair. It is no wonder that NOCO Hair attracted so much attention with their entry because it was full of individuality founded on brave and brilliant business structure and marketing ideas. We wish them the best of luck.” On hearing of their success, Noel and Corey say: “Opening a salon has been one of the most challenging things we’ve ever done. But seeing our ideas pan out to the point of reaching the finals of these awards just makes our achievements feel that much greater.
It’s been an incredible journey of seeing what we are capable of creatively and practically, and I’ve grown so much as a leader.” NOCO Hair will find out if they have achieved the top spot at an awards evening on Monday 25th January at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Currently there are now more than 43,000 hair and beauty businesses in the UK, following a 45% increase over the past five years. It is reported that hair and beauty businesses also have higher survival rates after five years than many other sectors.* It’s easy to see why the appointment books of UK salons are now full for the next few months following the nationwide lockdown and it is clear that the value of a professional service is held in high regard. Your Garden In September
Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time of the year to appreciate those long lasting plants that flower into autumn and if you have a fruit or vegetable patch you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of a hopefully successful harvest. Don’t forget - if you look forward to a great spring display of colour then now is the time to buy and plant your bulbs. Whatever you’re doing in your garden this month, be sure to make the most of the remaining warmth while you can. Divide herbaceous perennials September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congested. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible. Take Perennial cuttings Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthemum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint.
10
Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory. Plant spring flowering bulbs Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders. Tulips come in a huge variety of colours and bloom at a time of year when there is very little colour in the garden. snowdrops, appearing before the tulips, are one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. When the snowdrops begin to fade, the daffodil begins to appear, with its cheery shades of yellow brightening the borders.
Looking good this month Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ Why should you plant them? Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ is an evergreen, rounded shrub with ovate, glossy green leaves that make a very attractive plant for borders and containers. Easy to care for, this Hebe is drought tolerant and flowers prolifically in summer.
How should you plant them ? The variety of Hebe flowers best when planted in full sun. the addition of a good quality compost when planting is essential to prevent the roots becoming too dry. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Affordable funeral packages with more time to say goodbye
“Aside from this, burials are becoming more popular as people realise that it is the environmentally friendly option. Memorial Woodlands is creating a nature reserve and public parkland that is held in trust for future generations.”
A South West regional funeral venue is encouraging people to consider burials for their loved ones as an affordable option with more time to say goodbye.
The morning package is from 10.15am to 12.45pm providing plenty of time for a service and simple reception. This includes a burial plot with a simple marker and costs £3,995.
The Founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, near Thornbury, says there is a common misconception that cremations are better value for money when, in fact, the venue has lowered prices to below the UK average for cremations.
The afternoon package is from 2pm to 5.30pm providing over three hours to say goodbye with a service and the use of the reception rooms. This includes a burial plot with a simple marker and costs £4,495.
As well as affordability, families benefit from more time to say goodbye to their loved one with an unhurried ceremony and burial in a tranquil woodland setting, which they can visit for years to come. The new pricing structure includes several packages including a morning option, afternoon option, a simple service or a bespoke full-day event. There is also an unattended option which has been popular during the coronavirus crisis, allowing families to arrange a burial now with the option to visit and hold a celebration later.
The simple service includes a 30-minute service in the chapel followed by a burial for £2,995. It includes the plot, all arrangements and necessary staff but does not include use of the reception rooms. Each package includes everything that is necessary for a funeral. Both the morning and afternoon funeral packages include all arrangements, collection of a loved one within a 30-mile radius, viewing at the chapel of rest, provision of a celebrant, playing of music from CDs and provision of a hearse or bier.
The venue can also arrange additional items such as orders of service, flowers, an organist for hymns, a choir and musicians, vintage and historic hearses, limousines and a delicious Memorial Woodlands is the only funeral direc- choice of refreshments. tors in the UK with its own chapel, reception rooms and 100-acre burial ground. National figures released by SunLife in January (SunLife 2020), Cost of Dying Report, Founder of the woodlands, Christopher Bak- put the average cost of a basic funeral, for er, said: “We wanted to provide something cremation, in the UK at £4,417, which was up which was a move away from the ‘conveyor 3.4% on last year and that is nearly always for belt’ funerals you often see at a crematorium. less than 40 minutes. “People need time to mourn, they need time to grieve and say goodbye. However, the perception is that an unhurried, beautifully personal funeral like this would cost sky high prices. Our packages cost less than the average price of the crematorium and people can spend half a day or a full day really celebrating the life of their family member or friend.
12
More information on the packages including the unattended and bespoke options, where families are invited to talk to the funeral directors about all of their specific needs can be obtained by calling Luke or Scott on 01454 414999 or Ella, at Westbury-on-Trym, on 0117 9504100. Erection of warhorse memorial statue
History & Heritage During World War I the main form of transport for troops, munitions and supplies was the horse or mule. The military effort of the Western Front from August 1914 to November 1918 required a continual supply of these animals. Several Remount Depots were set up across the UK to help maintain this supply. Shirehampton was one of the largest and over 300,000 horse passed through Shirehampton and Avonmouth between 1914 and 1918. At the beginning of the war most of these horses came from British farms, but this supply was quickly exhausted. By 1915 most of the animals were shipped over from Canada or the US to be stabled at Shirehampton before they were sent to the front as required. The Remount Centre covered a large part of Shirehampton and is locally celebrated, and was featured in a BBC production World War One at Home; Animals https://www.bbc.co.uk/ sounds/play/p)22nn4d 18
Friends of Lamplighters Marsh (FOLM) was established in 2015 to work as a community protect, improve and support the newly-designed Locate Nature Reserve for the benefit of the Shirehampton community FOLM is affiliated to, and has close links with, the local charity Shirehampton Community Action Forum (SCAF) FOLM has its own bank accounts and has won grants from several places including funding from Peoples Postcode Lottery, Greggs, Neighbourhood Partnerships and so on. The group meets at least monthly and has held many community activities such as walks, events, volunteer days and participates in many other community initiatives such as Forgotten Landscape, Tidal Cultures and many wellbeing activities. FOLM have always worked closely with Bristol City Council (BCC) to deliver benefits and work in coordination with Parks Department on work plans and aims, with leaders trained by BCC
The Proposal – Summary FOLM would like to purchase and organise a memorial to commemorate the Remount Centre and Shirehampton’s role in WW1. FOLM propose the use of S106 monies already allocated for the development of the LNR, of which substantial amounts are allocated (over £100k), and only a portion of which would be used in this purpose (circa £20K estimated). The memorial would be a Lifesze Warhosre Statue constructed by the local artists from horseshoes, and mounted on the raised Daisy Field section of the LNR – providing good views to motorists and passers-by on the A4 Portway. An interpretation board is also proposed with history and maps showing the extent and importance of the Shirehampton remount Centre to the war effort and the local community. The statue would be maintained and monitored by FOLM.
The final count was approximately 380 horseshoes, but many more were used in trial builds during the project. The horse is Life size and a conversation (not more than) weight of 300kg is estimated. The statues has been deburred and would be clean of all sharp edges, but left in a natural state to age and weather. The statue has great presence when e xperienced close up, and impressed all who have seen it – viewing is highly recommended! Community Trust wins Women's Football Award Bristol Rovers Community Trust have been recognised as the ‘Best Community Football Development Initiative’ at this year’s FA Women’s Football Awards for the launch of the new Bristol Rovers Women’s team and for their work in the community. The FA Women’s and Girls’ Football Participation Awards recognise the achievement of clubs, players, staff and the important work by volunteers at the grassroots level of the game. The announcement of the award was made via a surprise video call from England and Chelsea forward Fran Kirby, to Bristol Rovers Women’s Co-Founder, Matthew Davies which was then released on the Lionesses twitter page yesterday. Since the launch of the ‘Gas Girls’ project, the Community Trust have seen a dramatic increase in participation figures across the free football sessions that they host during term-time and a huge rise in applications for the BTEC programme that gives girl’s the opportunity to take their first steps into working within the sports industry. Community Trust CEO, Adam Tutton, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that we’ve won this Nationally recognised award. Our success is down to a passionate, hardworking team and their dedication and belief in what they do and what they’re hoping to achieve.
24
Without the support of our participants, partners, sponsors, fans and the directors at the football club, we wouldn’t have been able to make the impact that we have for women and girls in our community over the last 12 months.” Bristol Rovers Co-Founder, Matthew Davies, said: “Considering Bristol Rovers Women’s has only been fully operational for just over a year, I think we are all really surprised to receive this award but obviously delighted. The ‘Gas Girls’ programme focuses on community, education, participation and performance and this model will enable us to grow and develop further in the coming years. The whole team is really excited by what the future holds, and I feel that we’ve only scratched the surface of our potential.” Bristol Rovers Women’s were on course to win their Gloucestershire County Women’s League before the season was declared null & void due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The new season is scheduled to kick on the 20th September.

Lawrence Weston Road: Area of natural beauty or antisocial behaviour?
From the carpark of the Lawrence Weston Social Club (the ‘Cabbage Patch’), it’s about an hour’s stroll to Merebank Road, along what feels like a country lane, despite its proximity to the Avonmouth Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) and other waste management and warehouse businesses. The small ditches that run along each side of the road are locally known as reams. These are home to a variety of wildlife, including kingfishers, eels and water voles.
So what can we do to protect this local asset? Work has already been done by Bristol City Council’s Clean Streets team to clear some of the worst fly tip sites. Highways England is planning to install lighting in the M49 underpass, to aid its flood prevention work. There are plans to try and tap into government funding for the improvement of walking and cycling routes, with the help of the Bristol based charity, Sustrans.
People walking along this route are afraid to confront perpetrators of anti-social behaviour, whether it is fly-tipping, dirt-bike racing or shooting of pellet guns. This is understandable and they should not put themselves at risk. This responsibility should fall to the police and/or the Council’s Neighbourhood Unfortunately it has also become a magnet for Enforcement Team. antisocial behaviour. This includes various fly tipping sites throughout the route, regular dirt However local employees and residents bike activity, firing of pellet guns or slingshots could be of assistance in investigations and (sometimes at passers-by), as well as food those spoken to have expressed a desire to and drink packaging left behind after social do so, when it is safe. However, I’m not sure there is much money around to pay for such a project at the moment. Perhaps in the future, a sponsor might be found. 31 This should be a pleasant walk for families and dog walkers from Lawrence Weston, as well as a useful cycle route to various workplaces in the Avonmouth & Severnside Industrial Area.
