Welcome to this months edition. Wow October already. Where has the year gone, seems like the years go faster and faster the older you get doesn’t it? feels like only a few days ago we were talking about the kids going back to school and the problems it may bring... Now we are thinking what sort of mess has been created as we head to half term and the government suggestion of not going away for the autumn school holidays. I really do feel for the university students that have been sold the dream of partying all night and endless campus lectures they were so looking forward to as they head in to fresher week. I think they should all get a refund, or at least been told the whole story before the local universities took their cash and put them in some kind of lockdown. As for those that seemed to have had mass dorm parties shame on you we are all in this together for the long haul so suck it up, a time to party will happen-and what a party it will be when its all over!! On a happier note as of the 1st October its only 85 days to Christmas. I wonder how we will celebrate this year as most of the usual events that mark this occasion are closed and the pub will be closed at 10pm. Maybe we should have social distant street parities. Anyway till next week stay safe and well folks

PM Johnson confirms major blow for football fans! Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that football fans will not return from October 1 after announcing new lockdown measures in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It had been hoped that fans could return to limited-capacity football stadiums from the start of next month. With grounds having around 25 to 33% of its capacity being filled. However, tighter restrictions due to a spike in Covid-19 cases have resulted in those plans being pushed back - potentially by six months. That would mean matches continuing to be played behind closed doors until March, at least, unless "significant progress" is made. "On reopening sporting events, we will not be able to do this from 1 October, "Boris Johnson told the House of Commons.“We will have to extend the 'rule of six' to all adult indoor team sports. "Unless we make significant progress, these restrictions will be in place for six months."

Sport leaders foresaw the announcement coming and have asked the prime minister for a £15billion rescue package. The Football Supporters Association have written to the government urging them to rethink the approach to letting fans in. Arguing that pilots which allowed fans into matches have been a success and shown that crowds can comply with social distancing measures put in place, FSA CEO Kevin Miles said the financial consequences of not allowing fans in could be devastating to clubs that mean so much to communities.

A combination of revenue at the ground and government support is urgently needed to keep clubs going. “The Government has to listen to fans and football clubs on this one.”

Cheddar Caves to close with 40 redundacies

A popular attraction in Somerset is to close for the foreseeable future with 40 jobs losses. Longleat Enterprises said Cheddar Caves and Gorge will not reopen this year and unfortunately it "could not seeing that changing in 2021". "The effects of coronavirus has had on our operations has been profound," it said. The all the staff, based at Cheddar, will now be formally made redundancy. Cheddar Caves and Gorge features a series of caves, a museum and cafe and also offers rock climbing activities in the gorge itself. The company, which also runs Longleat Safari Park, said the decision had been made in part because of the "trajectory of the virus in 2021 and associated guidance and rules".

8

"With great regret amid the ongoing uncertainty and long timescales involved we have to consider making redundancies, which will affect the vast majority of our staff working at Cheddar," it added. HR director Simon Askew said they hoped to "reopen, in a way which is bigger and better than before" at some point in the future. "This would not be the end of Cheddar as a wonderful attraction, but it would mean we have to close the gates, for some time," he said. "As you will appreciate, our primary focus, at this time, is ensuring that we deal with our staff who are impacted in a way which is as fair as possible."

Gas Girls’ Launch Special Edition Away Kit With Bristol Pride The 'Gas Girls' are delighted to launch a special edition away kit in partnership with Bristol Pride. The brand-new special edition kit will made its debut on Sunday the 20th September in the Women's FA Cup Preliminary Round away to Chipping Sodbury Ladies. Bristol Pride is a registered charity organised by volunteers from the community who work all year round to challenge homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and promote equality and diversity, for all, through various events, school visits and consultation services. The Bristol Pride Festival also attracts close to 40,000 people every year. The ‘Gas Girls’ recently received ‘The Best Football Community Development Initiative’ award at this year’s FA Women’s Football Awards and the club is continuing to establish key partnerships within the City in an attempt to promote community cohesion and inclusion. Bristol Rovers Women’s and Bristol Rovers Community Trust are also excited to be working alongside Bristol Pride to organise future events and help bring the community together to celebrate, create understanding, opportunities for engagement and to tackle discrimination.

10

Club Secretary and Marketing Manager, Matthew Davies, said: "I am absolutely delighted to establish this partnership with such an inspiring organisation and charity like Bristol Pride. We've been in discussion with the team at Bristol Pride for a number of months and it was very clear that we all share the same community values and strive to challenge homophobia of any kind in society. To donate the front of this shirt to Bristol Pride and to be able to wear their brand is a huge honour and we're really excited by what we're able to achieve by working together in the future. I'd also like to thank Bob Seymour from Ahimsa Yoga Bristol who helped us the launch of the kit and shares our values as a club." Festival Director at Bristol Pride, added: "We were so excited when Matt got in touch. Sport reaches and connects with so many people of all ages, races, sexes genders and everything in-between. Homophobia is a big problem in sport and this is a very clear message. We wish them all the best with the season ahead and can’t wait to wear the shirts with pride."

Tortilla Mall Cribbs Causeway,

If you ever find yourself wondering around the Mall Cribbs Causeway, shopping for lights as I did one Friday evening. Then you’ll want to eat something to keep up your energy levels and stop you potentially going insane with boredom or murdering your other half for making you do it in the first place. Well fear not because in the Mall there is an abundance of food venues to choose from. My favourite however is ‘Tortilla’. A Californian take on a Mexican classic, the Taco. Serving up delicious morsels of fresh and tasty bites of Californian sunshine. Their menu is quite extensive, offering dishes such as nachos, burritos, tacos and salads. It’s been there a little while so things must be going well? Despite the Covid situation it has held on to the tassels of its sombrero like a Mexican bandit holding on to a money train! Walking in, the instant impression you get is that this place is the Subway Sandwiches of the Taco world. It’s long deli style counter bulging with different taco and burrito fillings. We where greeted with a warm and friendly smile from the guy behind the counter who took our order.

Reviewed by food critic Peter Abraham

14

I had the trio of tacos with pulled pork, cheese, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. The ball and chain had the Burrito with rice, beans, cheese and salsa. The place was virtually empty with no atmosphere. A real shame as it has great potential to be a really fun place to go with friends.

Tacos are messy things to eat. You just have to grab them and get on with it. That’s what I did. Like an excited toddler in a high chair I tucked in and enjoyed every bite they were delicious. The flavours worked, they where fresh and vibrant and very moorish. All three demolished in quick succession. According to my shadow the burrito was good too. All in all this is a great little place. Good food, friendly service and quick on delivery. The only thing that lets it down is the atmosphere. Get that sorted and they’ve cracked it.

Your Garden In October

Autumn is officially here! October, in all its glory, gives us a wonderful display of colours. The trees are beginning to lose their leaves in abundance as they become dormant for winter, telling us that the change of season is in full swing.

The days are much shorter and cooler and we can feel autumn chill in the air. Although trees are the stars of the month, October is time to think about how the garden will look when it wakes from hibernation. There are plants to be cut back and left tidy for the winter, shrubs to be planted or moved, summer plants to be removed and replaced with winter hardy bedding, bulbs to be strategically placed in borders and the lawn to be fed and given its final mow October may bring with it the beginning of quiet times for the garden – but not for the gardener. TIDY PERENNIALS Perennials are not difficult plants to care for, but trimming them after flowering finishes in autumn helps to improve their appearance and give a boost to next year’s flowering. Using a knife, shears or secateurs, cut stems close to the ‘crown’ or dormant base of the plant. Any crowded clumps of perennials can also be lifted, divided and replanted. Take the opportunity to remove weeds as you prune before applying a light mulch to protect from any hard frost.

16

PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS October is the ideal month to plant trees and shrubs. Although the container grown plants can be planted at any time of the year they are easier to care for if planted in the autumn or winter. The ground is damp and still warm which gives the perfect conditions to allow roots to become established before winter sets in.

PLANT AUTUMN BEDDING Any remaining summer bedding will be looking very tired by now and is best cleared and replaced for a fresher display. Autumn bedding such as pansy and primrose will give an instant lift to the garden and they look great planted between the shrubs in the border. Myositis, which produces masses of small flowers with the little white eyes and Sweet William, which provides a colourful carpet of flowers from spring through summer are both ideal for over wintering if planted now.

LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH... Conifers

WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Conifers are hardy evergreen trees and shrubs that suit any garden. They come in a huge range of shape and sizes and textures and the colour can be anything from yellow or light green through to dark green and blue. Easy to care for and long lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for any gardener looking for a low maintenance but high impact plant. HOW SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Dwarf conifers are good for containers and larger shrubs and trees make good hedging or garden features. They are happy in any soil in the sun or shade. Newly planted conifers will need watering until established.. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Amazon parcels could be delivered by selfdriving delivery boxes

Bristolians could soon see their Amazon parcels delivered by a small self-driven vehicle.

The online giant is hiring a team of engineers to develop its Amazon Scout vehicles for use in Bristol and throughout the UK following the growth in online shopping. The Scout rolls along the pavement at walking pace before delivering to a customer's door. It has been developed with a camera and sensor to help it navigate around pedestrians, pets and obstacles such as bins and sign posts.

"Our investment in this new Amazon Scout team in the UK, which will consist of dozens of engineers, is driven by our partnership with the Cambridge community and made possible by the talented people who live here," the company said.

The technology is already being tested out in small areas in the States, including the area just outside Amazon's headquarters in Washington state.

Last week, Amazon said it would create 7,000 jobs by the end of the year, taking its permanent UK workforce to more than 40,000 people.

Engineers in the UK will be working with the Amazon Scout research lab in Seattle to develop the software.

But thousands of jobs have been lost in the retail sector since March, as non-essential shops were forced to close during lockdown and many turned to online shopping.

Home Improvement tips

Laminate Flooring In Five Steps! Laminate is attractive for a few reasons. It is just a good tight floor that requires minimal maintenance. Laminate flooring is normally durable and in comparison with other types of flooring not costly. If you're following theses steps carefully, it is possible to setup any flooring straight away on your own. A fairly nice activity job for two individuals to undertake. What do I need? - Laminate - Underfloor + joining tape - Skirtings - Mitre Saw / Jig Saw - Tapeline - Hammer - Spacers - Pencil - Square Step 1 Prepare everything you have obtained for the project to start out. The ground where one must place the laminate ought to be completely flat and free of dirt and dust. Step 2 Then you may start with the actual sub floor. This is basically the sound, humidity and heat insulation. There are numerous types of flooring on the market. Make sure when choosing your sub floor to select the one that fits your floor the best. When rolling out the sub floor. Simply place the underlay along with joining tape together.

24

Step 3 Now you can begin at one corner, between the walls and the laminate place spacers an 8mm apart around the room between the wall and the laminate. This help the laminate to expand against the wall in hot and cold climates. First, place a whole sheet of flooring. After that you can work the room. Hold the plank in a angle of about forty-five degrees and tap the boards together using a rubber hammer and off cut of laminate to ensure you don’t ruin the tung or grove of the next board. I recommend using a dremel tool to cut out spaces under skirting that is surrounding doors to get a seamless finish if your leaving the original skirting in place Step 4 When the laminate is completed , you may start the skirting to hide the 8mm. You can find a variety of skirting for sale at places like B and Q. The simplest to use is the bull nosed variety. This can be a good choice seeing as there are absolutely no fancy edges to cut. Cut the skirting boards inside a corner with a miter saw at forty-five degrees. This way you will get good, tight edges. Step 5 Your floor is ready! Thoroughly clean the surface with a lightweight. Wet cloth. Not too wet, because laminate are not able to endure that. Be careful while positioning the furniture. Putting them on laminate (specially with the cheaper ones) can quickly get them scratched. The best you can do is ensure the bottom part of the legs is properly flat.

Top Tips For Children Preparing for school As schools prepare to reopen to all pupils, the NHS services is here to support young people and their families with the transition.

Parents of 4 -10 year olds have reported increased in difficulties for their children in all these areas since lockdown There is a risk some children will struggle to transition backs to school after a period away. This could manifest in a number of ways, including failing to attend and challenging behaviour. Schools should make pastoral care clear priority and identify reasons for non-attendance or challenging behaviour and what support children need. Listen to and validate your child’s feeling Reassure your child that it’s okay to feel nervous, worried, upset or unsure about returning to school. Telling your children not to worry or that it will all be okay can make them more anxious or feel unheard. When children returned to school, you could try a check-in with your child at a quiet time to explore how their day went and address any concerns that they might have. Prepare your child for change

Establish a routine Predictability can reduce stress and remind children that their environment is loving and secure. Set bed and wake up times so they can get adequate rest. Involve your child in a ‘getting ready for school’ routine by having them help make their packed lunch or setting out their school clothes for the morning. Being part of what is happening can help children feel more in control and make sense of the changes, and less like events are being thrust upon them. Look at the positives While it is important to hear the worries and concerns of children, we can help by encouraging them to focus on the positive aspect of their day too. What went well? What did they have doing? Did they have the opportunity to try anything new? Questions such as these can help children acknowledge that although they’ve had worries or difficult feelings, they’ve also been able to have fun, enjoy themselves and learn.

Some of the most painful health conditions most common signs of a heart attack people can suffer with The are : The NHS has revealed some of the most painful health conditions people can suffer from. The list has a number of illnesses which can be so insufferable they can prevent people from doing simple, everyday tasks. Not all of the conditions on the list are curable, but they are manageable - with the help of medicine and a little support from loved ones. Some of the list comes as no surprise, while others certainly might do. Shingles Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it which usually affects a particular area on one side of the body. The main symptom is a painful rash that develops into itchy blisters which contain particles of the virus. An attack usually lasts between two and four weeks, but 20 per cent of sufferers go on to develop nerve pain in the affected area of skin. This pain can be severe and last for several months or even longer. Shingles can occur at any age, but is most common in people over the age of 70. It is much less common in children. Frozen shoulder Frozen shoulder means your shoulder is painful and stiff for months, sometimes years. The NHS says it means the joint can become so tight and stiff that it is virtually impossible to carry out simple movements, such as raising your arm. Daily activities can become an ordeal. It is not clear what causes frozen shoulder but it can happen after a shoulder or arm injury, and is more common in people with diabetes. Heart attack A heart attack is life-threatening and sees the heart muscle starved of oxygen-rich blood. Most are caused when the arteries narrow and fill up with fatty materials which prevents blood from flowing properly. Smoking and living an unhealthy lifestyle are major contributory factors in heart attacks, so regular exercise and maintaining a good diet are vital. But through no fault of their own some people are more prone to having them as heart disease can be hereditary.

Chest pain - tightness, heaviness, pain or a burning feeling in your chest. • Pain in arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach - for some people, the pain or tightness is severe, while other people just feel uncomfortable. • Sweating • Feeling light-headed • Becoming short of breath • Feeling nauseous or vomiting Migraine More than “just a headache” - migraine is a complex disabling neurological disorder, the Migraine Trust says. It explains: “For many people the main feature is a painful headache. Other symptoms include disturbed vision, sensitivity to light, sound and smells, feeling sick and vomiting. Migraine attacks can be very frightening and may result in you having to lie still for several hours. “The symptoms will vary from person to person and individuals may have different symptoms during different attacks. Your attacks may differ in length and frequency. “Migraine attacks usually last from 4 to 72 hours and most people are free from symptoms between attacks.“Migraine can have an enormous impact on your work, family and social lives.” Sciatica Sciatica is a back problem that affects the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and runs from behind the pelvis down to your feet. Sciatica occurs if it becomes irritated or compressed in any way – this most commonly involves pressure being placed on the nerve by a slipped disc for example – and the pain will basically follow the path of the nerve, so what you’re describing in terms of it starting in the lower back and progressing through to your leg seems to fit with this. Other symptoms can include tingling sensations, a bit like pins and needles in the leg, cramp, and shooting pain that starts in the buttock region and travels swiftly down towards the foot. The pain of sciatica can vary from mild to extremely painful – to the point where in severe cases it is impossible to put any weight on the affected leg. Sciatica can affect just about anyone, but the younger you are, the less likely it is.

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB Before looking at how the PBA Bowls Club grew from the day in June 1970 when it was born, there is good and positive news about bowling in 2020. Despite the restrictions imposed by Bowls England in response to the Covid 19 outbreak there has been bowling at the City and Port Green and almost twenty bowlers have been along to enjoy it. Some have been every week, others less often but importantly ---- there has been bowling! Two hour pre-arranged roll ups have been enjoyed since June 16th when Charlie Maby and Dave Chilcott became the first bowlers this year to bowl woods on the green. Since August a mini-pairs competition has been running to add a little competitive edge to simply rolling up. Four pairs entered to play each other twice in 15 end games with three points for a win and two for a draw. Leading the field at the half way stage were Charlie Maby and Dave Chilcott followed by Ken Davies and Bill Hatherall, but, with the second round of games to come it’s all to play for. Dee and Brian Crawley and Gill and David Hinksman were still very much in it with three games left to play. The final result will be in the next edition. There has also been plenty of activity around the edges of the green and on it in order to keep everything in tip top condition. The Monday gardeners have done a tremendous job of keeping the green surround looking great and the Green Keeper is already into his Autumn Programme of work. Returning to the story of the clubs early years and development it is clear from the original minute book that no time was lost in first of all finding somewhere to play, making fixtures, becoming affiliated to the Gloucestershire County Association and the City and County of Bristol Association and joining the Men’s League --- known then as the Bristol South West League ---- a lot of progress in a short time. Other things seemed to have been organised very quickly too--- a Dance came along in the first year and valuable profit made from it. Mr.Edney was at the time General Manager at the port and the club approached him to see if he would be President ---- he said yes and presented a trophy --- still played for today.

The Men’s Four Wood singles is the top men’s singles competition and the winner goes forward to compete at County Level in the Champion of Champions, which ends ultimately in National Finals in Leamington Spa. Mr. Edney was President for three years and when he retired at the port he was succeeded by the new general manager ---- Mr. Lowery. In the early days the club had not only a management committee but a selection committee and a green committee. Meetings of the management committee seemed to be held quite often --- initially at the Port Office but soon at a variety of local pubs. Two ladies ---- Mrs Kidd and Mrs. Leach did teas for home matches at the old Avonmouth Green in the early days. They were presented with a small cash voucher each at the end of the first season but subsequently were given expenses on the day. Something that seemed to be a problem in the early days was the transportation of club woods to away games. The club had purchased eight sets of woods at the outset and these were being used rather than members having their own as is the custom today. The problem was resolved by a decision that individuals would be responsible for the transportation of the woods they were using. There were changes in club officers, changes in committee members and a gradual increase in numbers from the original 30. The number of club competitions grew and a club league was formed thanks mainly to the efforts of Ian Wilson. The league became so big that at one time it was played on Tuesday as well as Monday evenings. In 1974 the club left Avonmouth to play on the new green adjacent to the PBA Club in Shirehampton. By the 1980s Ladies were seen on the green and at one stage total membership reached 140. There was success for the club and for individual players locally and at National Level. A number of ladies were seen in National Finals at Leamington Spa such was the level of success at that time. For a number of years men entered two teams in the Bristol and District League and the Ladies played in the top division of their league as well as competing in the Inter-Club and Top Club competitions --- something they do to this day --- but not this year! So --- there we have it – the club that grew from a few men wanting to try – this bowling lark and then in 1970 forming the club is still going and looking to the future when hopefully bowling will return to normality. For further information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 31 9082713.
