Mikes letter

Now how fast has April gone by.. With lockdown in place I hope everyone is safe and well. By now we should be getting used to the new way of life, however there are some people out there struggling mentally and physically. A very dear member of my family once said to me. “In tough time be thankful for everything you have and never focus on what you can not control.” I think these are some very wise words as we seem to be heading in to a very long period of social distancing. Okay enough of doom and gloom I think, time to get positive about all this. Did anyone see the spectacular light show in the sky? A lot of people reported the light show and thought it may have been UFOs. However it was just Elon Musk’s satellites linking up, weird that we have never seen this happen before though isn’t it? Also its great to see so many people out clapping on Thursday evenings at 8pm in respect for our NHS and key workers. Thank you for being our heroes on the front line. Till next month stay safe folks..

Your Garden In May Spring is well under way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…

Looking good this month... Geranium Why should you plant them?

Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

If you have already grown tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Enjoy your garden!

Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot. 5

Crane Williams Independent Financial Advice – Information on Coronavirus Mortgage Support. Firstly and most importantly I hope everyone including the readership of Direct Local is keeping safe and well. As you may have heard there is support offered by lenders to those who are financially suffering due to the coronavirus crisis. Each lender will have a different policy surrounding this, so here is some information to point you in the right direction. •

•

6

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, then please contact your lender ASAP to talk about how they can support you. This can be in the form of a three-month mortgage holiday or a temporary switch to interest-only. Do not miss any mortgage payments while you are waiting for a reply from your lender because this will reflect negatively on your credit history Most of the main lenders have an online application form you can fill out. They are all experiencing exceptionally high call volumes at the moment so this may save you spending time on hold. Most lenders will need to speak to the account holder, or the account holder will have to fill in the form

•

If you are not experiencing (nor expect to experience) financial difficulty, then try to keep paying your mortgage as normal, a mortgage holiday will only cost you in the long run if you don’t need such support. The lender is unlikely to offer support if you are not in difficulty

•

Do not cancel your life or illness protection policies. Statistics show this can be a direct debit that gets cancelled in times of financial hardship, but obtaining the cover again in the future may be more expensive and could even be declined if you have had any health issues

•

For businesses please contact your accountant to ask what support is available, who will point you in the right direction of the government schemes.

•

If your mortgage fixed rate is due to expire soon, contact me to talk about arranging a new product before you apply for a mortgage holiday, because some lenders aren’t allowing product transfers while a mortgage holiday is in place

I hope you find this useful and of course if you have any questions about mortgages, life and illness cover, pensions and investments please email us info@cranewilliams.co.uk .

Starlink satellites gave us a fantastic sight in the night sky We all saw the glowing satellite formation that started to fly over Bristol during the last few days and weeks, giving us a good reason to look to the skies. Two weeks ago the spectacular Super Pink Moon filled the sky, and sightings of the International Space Station last week gave everyone another lift in light of the lockdown. And now, at least until April 24, a cluster of satellites known as Starlink will be making its way overhead. Dozens of tiny satellites will fly across the sky in a train-like straight line, which will look like moving stars. They will regularly be visible from the UK for the foreseeable future, and more frequently as more and more of them are launched. Starlink was spotted for the first time by people in Bristol a few nights back, with people wondering if what they had just spotted was a UFO. If we can get some clear skies, the spectacle should appear as a string of very bright lights in a line formation, so make sure you look up at the sky for the next few nights to see if you can catch sight of them.

8

The satellite network, dubbed Starlink, was launched by Tesla and billionaire Elon Musk, as part of his new venture. They are being used as a way to provide remote areas across the world with low-cost internet. Elon Musk's company has been launching the satellites in to space since last May. Starlink plans to fly 12,000 of them in the project, which may rise to 30,000. To put those figures into perspective, there are 2,218 satellites currently orbiting the Earth as stated in the UCS Satellite Database. According to space new.com, They have launched 120 of its 12,000 small broadband satellites into a low orbit around the Earth. When you will be able to see the Starlink satellites According to findastarlink.com, the Starlink satellites will be flying over the United Kingdom until the April 24. You can enter your location on this web address https://findstarlink.com/ to find the days and times they'll be most visible in your area. You can also track the satellites using the Starlink app downloadabe on all platforms. When you open the app click a satellite number from the list provided and select your current location to reveal the visible times.

Government jobs retention scheme. We are receiving a huge amount of e-mails regarding the government jobs retention scheme. This is the scheme that the government announced whereby employers will be refunded up to 80% of staff wages up to ÂŁ2500 per employee. This is a very welcome measure, but there are very few details on this. HMRC will be setting up another portal to report these members of staff, so whilst this is a welcome announcement, there are few details and we just have to be patient until the government release more information. Please note, existing systems (especially HMRC) are not equipped to deal with this. It's a deeply troubling time for us all, but for this particular measure I'm afraid there is no more immediate news. My advice is for employers that pay their staff monthly, ensure they get their March wages. I would hope this would all be resolved for end of April pay runs and that's really the only information we can give our employees as little as it is. For those needing immediate financial assistance the business interruption loan scheme may be of help. The good news is that further details have been released on a couple of measures. The business interruption loan scheme - Full details can be found here https://www.british-business-bank.co.uk/ourpartners/coronavirus-business-interruption-loan-scheme-cbils/ We have several dozen e-mails on this alone, so can I urge you to please check out this website with the details. We are working our way through all the e-mails, but this will give you the same information quicker.

Business Grants - the same applies as to the business loans. We are inundated, but the government has issued more detail. One thing they have said, and this shouldn't dissuade you from making genuine claims, is that anyone who abuses the scheme, or claims a grant fraudulently will be prosecuted. I can only advise that the same is bound to apply to the other measures announced. Details of the grants can be found here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-on-business-support-grant-funding Support for the self-employed - There is support similar to sick pay through Employment Support Allowance details on how to claim can be found here. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ coronavirus-support-for-employees-benefit-claimants-and-businesses Who is a key worker - We've been asked about this a lot. We've not found a definitive list from the government, it all seems vague, so again, we need more guidance from the top, so for now advice is find what you can, some councils have published lists and applying common sense are the best we can do at the moment. There is still more to be done, more help for the self-employed and also more to be done on the job retention program. However, no details have been publlshed yet, so please can I ask that any payroll's sent to us don't start taking this into account until we know more about eligibility and procedures for claiming it. In the meantime we remain open, we are doing our work as usual whilst trying to reply to everyone and keep everyone updated. Please don't listen to the nonsense spouted in the Facebook world as fact. We all know how it goes "my mate Trevor's wife knows someone who's wife is an accountant and she said.......". We live in a world of instant knowledge and gratification. However, with much of this we remain in the dark awaiting more details from the government. So I won't get into speculation, but I will keep on looking to the government and other professional bodies for advice and practical guidance and giving the facts regularly as and when we are able and providing advice and support during these difficult times. Stay safe and I will update you again as soon as I know more.

HOW HOMEMADE WILLS COULD LEAVE BEREAVED FAMILIES WITH LESS National law firm Clarke Willmott LLP has issued a warning against families creating DIY Wills amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Private Client specialists at the firm say enquiries about Wills have increased dramatically since the coronavirus outbreak, but with some obstacles – such as witnessing - to creating them, the team is concerned some people may go down the DIY route. According to Jacqui Lazare, senior associate at Clarke Willmott, homemade Wills can give rise to a number of problems and even result in beneficiaries receiving significantly reduced sums. Jacqui said: “here are some difficulties in executing Wills at the moment, but this means expert advice is needed now more than ever, as the situation is changing rapidly. “Homemade Wills can appear attractive because of their nominal cost and, during these unusual times, the logistics of the lockdown with people being advised to self-isolate and practice social distancing. “They can, however, cause problems which may lead to considerable stress and difficulty for the testator’s surviving family and, at its worst, result in significant depletion of the estate’s assets in sorting out the disputes that may then arise. “That’s why a professionally drafted Will is so important. Avoid causing family members any further unnecessary heartache further down the line by providing them with a solid document which is clear, structured and easy to adhere to. “A professionally drafted Will avoids problems arising from incorrect form or signature and, in an age of increasing longevity, may also lessen the likelihood of disputes over capacity as this will be assessed, and a medical opinion sought if necessary.”

Inheritance disputes have seen an upward trend since 2015. This is due to a number of factors including an increase in average family wealth and the rise of “blended” families with more complicated structures. In 2017 the Law Commission began a review and consultation on the law relating to Wills. This exercise may in the longer term lead to courts having the power to “save” a Will which is invalid due to failure to adhere to strict requirements about the form in which it should be made and signed, but even if the law is eventually changed in this way it should only be regarded as a backstop, as any court application incurs costs and creates uncertainty. The report also raised the possibility of electronic Wills, including video Wills, becoming an accepted Will-making medium in the future. Jacqui continued: “f you are making your own Will it is difficult to take an objective, detached view of the provisions you intend to include; talking your thoughts over with an experienced professional who is trained to recognise problems and pitfalls can be invaluable. “If your estate, or your children’s, is likely to pay inheritance tax, a professionally drafted Will can also help you to reduce this as much as possible. Secure storage can also be provided free of charge so your Will can be easily located when required.” To find out more or to speak to Jacqui about Wills directly, contact her at jacqui.lazare@clarkewillmott.com Clarke Willmott is a national law firm with offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton and Taunton.

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club

The club was soon playing league bowls and surprising some of the opponents. The first league victory was on Brandon Hill against Cabot who were a very good and well respected team. It was a very warm evening and a couple of the PBA Team, although resplendent in grey trousers sported fashionable coloured vests. This met with looks of distain and much whispering from the opposition and this grew as the scores pointed to a victory for the visitors. After this, correct dress was very much order of the day. Moving on several seasons Paul remembers a cup game against Redland Green on the new but very ropey green at the PBA Club.

In a season when, for unprecedented reasons, the chances of bowling look unlikely it is good to look back and reflect on better times and to the origins of the club. To many, the club started in 1974 when the bowling green at the PBA Sports and Social Club was opened. Built by En-Tout-Cas and started in 1973 at a cost of about ÂŁ7500 it provided a home for the club founded years earlier by a few men who were keen to try this bowling lark. Paul Bywater is the clubs longest standing member and he was one of the men who wanted to give it a try and did so initially in Canford Park during lunch breaks from the port. Redland Green had some very good bowlers and they were not at all impressed with what they were Paul remembers how in about 1969 a group of being asked to play on. At this point one of the people from the PBA Avonmouth Office ( including Redland Green players, with a tobacco-less pipe himself) ate their lunch early so as to be at Canford in his mouth stepped forward and said ----but it is Park by 1pm. Once a week became twice. The the same for both teams. That player was best of original bowlers were Paul Bywater, Dave Winthe best --- David Bryant, a name synonymous with stone, Pete Tarrant, Keith Thompson, Bruce Tilley, bowls everywhere. In the years that followed the Malcolm Leach and Pete Stevens. The idea caught club name changed from PBA to City and Port of on and soon lads from the workshop --- Ian Wilson, Bristol. Early in the 1980s ladies joined ---the first Howard English and Nobby Whitehead joined in. two were Ivy Gingell and Angela Simmons. From that point serious consideration was given to forming a team that would apply for friendly fixtures and hopefully be accepted in the more serious bowls league. All of the aforementioned individuals were allocated a job ---- Paul became Match Secretary. Everybody did their bit to get things rolling but it was Ian Wilson who took a leading roll and incredibly arranged a green share with Avonmouth Bowls Club. This was at the original Avonmouth Green on the site of the Avonmouth Football Club. PBA were made very welcome at Avonmouth and flourished with the arrival of more members --- Ernie Lee and Ken Culverwell from the PBA Police. Arthur Horley and his brother Ernie plus Joe Kidd, Eric Lishman and Ray Cooper were non- PBA people. Bert Sweet, Neil Wilson and Ken McCullock came from PBA Workshops. Ivor Simmonds came from the PBA Locomotive Shed and Roy Simmons was from the PBA Offices. With a full fixture list Paul remembers a highlight being the game against Cope Chat in Stroud.

14

Ian Wilson formed a club league from all sections at the port and that, at its greatest was played on Monday and on Tuesday evenings. The club had 140 members ---so putting your name down as available for next week-end didn’t guarantee you a game ---- apparently doing a tea duty this week-end did help!! In 1982/83 the Bristol Ladies League started and the City and Port team was very much a part of it. Irene Whitfield was Captain, Shirley Parker Secretary with Pat Warren and Irene Jenkins selectors. The ladies did very well then and in the years that followed, never dropping below division two and competing in Top Club and Inter Club Competitions each season. So --- that was how it all started and how it developed. Hopefully, once the current crisis is over the club will return to where it once was and flourish once again. For information about the club, its activities and bowling in general please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

PLANNING – CHECK LIST

RIDING AS A GROUP

•

Do you know where you are going and how long it will take? Have you made sure all the family can cope with the distance and terrain (eg hills)?

•

• •

Have you got food and drink if necessary? Has everyone has got suitable clothing, and are prepared for changes in the weather? • Is everyone clear on the order you will be cycling in and how you will tackle turnings, junctions or obstacles? Have you checked everyone’s shoelaces are • tied and that there is nothing hanging down which could get caught in the chain or brakes?

•

•

• •

•

Have you done an equipment check? Do ensure that helmets fit tightly around the circumference of the head and the strap is secure below the chin, with enough room to fit two fingers between the strap and the chin. Check the bikes over first using the M or ABC check (some advice from our friends at Sustrans) Also explained in our Parent’s Handbook

FREE SPRING BIKE CHECK WITH THIS ADVERT

www.sullycycles.co.uk

0117 980 3337

It is a good idea to position the children who are most proficient at cycling at the front. If there are two parents, then the best option is to have one in front and one at the back. If there is only one parent, make a considered decision about whether it is safe enough to have more than two children in the group You may ride side by side with you children, position yourself on their right. (The Highway Code advises you not to ride more than two abreast) When you are on the road, ride as a unit and keep the together as one piece of traffic. Your aim will be to negotiate junctions together, tackling the priority system as one. Rather than dashing across individually

JUNCTIONS T-junctions, side roads, crossroads and roundabouts are all negotiated using the same basic sequence, there are always four things to do: • Look: Behind and ahead, consider rights of way and consider time and space • Communicate: By signalling your intentions if other road users are present • Position: When time and space permit, approach the junction in primary position, hold primary position through to the junction exit • Priority: Give way where you need to, if crossing a lane or entering a new lane and other road users have right of way.

Can our pets become carriers of COVID-19 In a bid to stop the spread of Covid-19 vets have set the record straight on whether cats need to be kept indoors during the pandemic. The British Veterinary Association suggested there is a slight risk that the virus can be spread from animal-to-animal, but it was unlikely it could be transmitted to humans. Some reports suggested all cats should be kept indoors to help stop the spread of the disease after one pet cat was reported to have contracted the virus. The British Veterinary Association has explained this advice is only in relation to cats in infected households or where people are self-isolating. The association is not advising that all cats are kept indoors. Only cats from infected households or where their owners are self-isolating, and only if the cat is happy to be kept indoors. Some cats cannot stay indoors due to stress-related medical reasons. There have been a small number of Coronavirus cases in animals and in all cases, it is likely that the transmission was human to animal. There is no evidence that pets can pass the virus to their owners. From the small number of cases it appears that dogs do not have any signs of symptoms, but apparently cats show clinical signs of the disease being transmitted.

26

It is also the case that animals can act as fomites carrying the virus on their fur in the same way as the virus being on other surfaces such as tables and doorknobs. That’s why the main advice for pet owners is to continue to be practising good hand hygiene (Wash your hands regularly). As a precaution, for pet owners who have the virus or who are self-isolating due to underlining health issues the BVA are recommending that you keep your cat indoors if possible, during that time. The BVA have stated It is very important that people don’t panic about their pets. There is no evidence that animals can pass the disease to humans. Its recommended though to avoid unnecessary contact with your pets, such as allowing them to lick your face, and do not touch other people’s dogs when on walks. The warning follows a report that a tiger had caught the virus in a zoo in New York. The incident was not unexpected as new research suggests domestic cats can be infected with the virus if large doses are administered into their noses. What does this mean for our pet cats? Nothing new – at present there is still only one suspected case where an owner has spread the virus to their pet. The World Health Organisation says that while there has been one instance of a dog being infected in Hong Kong, there is no evidence a cat, dog or any pet can transmit the virus. The virus is mainly spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, the BVA said.
