So It looks like our holiday plans for 2020 are destroyed again thanks to the relentless global pandemic that has risen from China in December 2019. The new 14 day quarantine that has been put in place by good old Boris has well and truly stuffed the tourist industry this year, however I can’t get my head around why the holiday companies want to get the rules relaxed? Surely peoples life’s are more important than a great sun tan and sangria on the beach aren’t they? I say fair play to Boris’s idea as I would have locked down the UK’s borders a long time ago to stop the virus ever getting in the country. I wonder if we will ever get back to normality again to be honest.

LEADING BRISTOL IVF DOCTOR PRESENTS FINDINGS AT EUROPEAN CONFERENCE Bristol IVF specialist Hajeb Kamali has presented research on his findings into different methods of fertility treatment for women with endometriosis at a major European conference.
“The paper was very well received by the audience with many questions aimed at finding out more about our work.
Research by Dr Kamali, who works for the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM) was chosen for presentation at the 36th European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) conference.
“I have a particular interest in this area and have previously presented different work within this field at ESHRE. I believe the use of ICSI should be when required and in the patients best interests and work such as ours will help to reinforce the argument and promote patient centred care.”
This year’s conference was planned for Copenhagen but was switched to a virtual event, attended by top fertility specialists from around the globe.
The Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine has world class facilities and technology that treats both private and NHS patients.
Dr Kamali’s research showed that ICSI fertility treatment, where sperm is injected directly into an egg, did not improve live birth rates compared to conventional IVF in couples with endometriosis in an analysis of 10,420 treatment cycles.
BCRM is involved in innovative research and have one of the best success rates with IVF and other fertility treatments in the UK.
He said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to give the presentation. I felt very proud to represent the BCRM and the work we are doing at such a global forum.
Anyone with fertility issues can register for a virtual open evening webinar or to book an initial consultation appointment email BCRM at: info@ BCRM.org.uk, call 0117 3018605 or visit: www. fertilitybristol.com.

AUGUST HOROSCOPES
Aquarius Jan 20-Feb 18 You may need to do a little bit of reflecting and thinking about what you would like to clear within your own space. This could be on the physical level, although it feels very much like it could be more on the emotional. Changes can sometimes seem a little daunting, but try and be open to them, as they can be really wonderful and bring good opportunities. Keywords, overcome obstacles and embracing change Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 Maybe you’re someone who collects things and it may have come to a point where it may be wise to go through collectibles and rearrange them or even maybe give some away. Clearing things always makes space for new ideas on new things, and sometimes brings new opportunities. Keywords. Clearing, reorganising, and changes. Gemini May 21 - June 20 Looks as though there could be some opportunities due to come your way. A lot of things have been held up, and a few ideas have had to of been on hold. KINGS WESTON ESTATE WALK KINGS WESTON HISTORY
WALK DIRECTIONS 1. Follow the path from the end of Shirehampton Road car park. This brings you to a clearing known as the Circle that stood at the end of the avenue from the house. Walk straight across the circle and follow the path slightly to the right. Take the first path off it to the left and left at the ‘T’ junction follow it all the way to the end. 2. Just as you exit the trees you will see the remains of Penpole Lodge hidden in the undergrowth on your left. Turn right and after approx. 40m you will come across The Dial a stone pillar set on a high ridge.
First mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, Kings Weston passed through several families before the estate you see today was formed. It was purchased in 1679 by Robert Southwell, from Humphrey Hooke, a former mayor of Bristol. Robert’s son Edward commissioned Sir John Vanbrugh to rebuild the house in its present form; it was designed c. 1712 and completed by 1720. The house is Grade I listed and sits in a Grade II registered historic landscape. Robert was amongst other things Secretary of State for Ireland and later President of the Royal Society. His son Edward followed him into the Society in 1692 in recognition of his interest in ‘natural science’. Jane Austen records the estate as “being on the circuit” and mentions Kings Weston in her novels Emma and Northanger Abbey.
3. Retrace your steps but follow the open ground rather than going back into the woods. This will bring you to Penpole Lane. When you have passed the Oasis Academy turn right through an unmarked gap into the cricket ground. Following the path on the right of the grounds will bring you out on Shirehampton Road. 4. Cross the road by Shirehampton Lodge and enter Shirehampton golf course. The path is almost hidden in the front right hand corner of the car park. Follow this public right of way down towards the Portway. 5. Follow the path around to the left and you will come across sweeping views over the river at Horseshoe Bend. From here you can see the Powder House at the end of Hung Road, where ships had to off-load gunpowder and other inflammable materials before they reached the port in the centre of Bristol. 6. Continue along the lower edge of the golf course and at the bottom of the slope by a gate to the Portway turn left. Follow the yellow footpath markers up the hill towards Shirehampton Road. Cross the road and follow the track uphill into the trees. Take the steps in front of you. Here you will find the Echo, one of the garden buildings designed by Vanbrugh. 7. With the Echo behind you walk downhill towards the house. Once at the house the path which follows the line along the edge of the original main avenue will lead you back to the car park.

Your Garden In August
After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry too much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.
Take herb cutting
August is the ideal month to take cuttings woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.
Pruning and tidying
Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.
10
Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.
Make plans for next year

FUNERAL VENUE OFFERS PICNIC OPTION SO FAMILIES CAN CELEBRATE FOR LONGER A South West funeral venue has adapted its catering options to allow for families to enjoy a leisurely picnic while remembering the life of their loved one. Bristol Memorial Woodlands, a nature reserve which hosts funeral services and burials within 100-acres of woodland and meadows, was forced to stop the usual buffet-style catering it offered to mourners due to coronavirus restrictions. Now, with the help of hospitality manager Kat Brown, the venue has launched a new picnic bag option which allows families to enjoy homemade treats on the grounds while spending time with family and friends after a service. “One of our biggest selling points, other than the stunning setting, is that families are given the opportunity here to mourn, remember and celebrate their loved ones life for longer than the set time you get given at a crematorium,” said Kat. With the space available at Bristol Memorial Woodlands, up to 30 guests can gather in the chapel (a few more outside) at any one time while following social distancing guidelines. Kat continued: “There has been a really good take up with most families choosing to enjoy our picnic bags over the last few weeks. We’ve now also got a marquee set up so that if the weather isn’t great people can still enjoy the views of our pond and woodlands. “Our customers have really appreciated the effort we have put in to the new catering options so it’s something we’re proud of. After the service they can congregate in the ground and share memories, all while keeping to social distancing rules.
12
“When we were unable to provide any catering for our guests, as our buffet-style with people helping themselves was prohibited under the new government guidelines, we really felt we were missing something and that guests weren’t able to get the full benefit of our beautiful facilities here. “One of our funeral directors Scott noticed that families were bringing their own picnics to enjoy on the grounds, something we encourage all year round. We realised that we could offer a picnic bag option meaning one less thing for families to worry about.” Kat and the team developed the idea from there and now offer visitors an individual picnic bag filled with a homemade sandwich, a homemade sausage roll, a homemade cake, a packet of crisps and a variety of hot and cold refreshments. There are vegetarian and vegan options available as well as gluten free and dairy free adaptations. “We really try to provide a bespoke service to each occasion so if a family requests a certain type of sandwich which reminds them of their loved one, or if they want us to set up a table of glasses for some bring your own fizz, we’ll happily accommodate them. We want to be known, not for a conveyor-belt service, but for an unhurried experience to remember fondly.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre burial ground which is being transformed into a beautiful woodland with trees and wild flowers planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest. The area is managed by a charitable trust and will be open forever for future generations to visit. Bristol Memorial Woodlands has its own chapel, Georgian reception rooms and dedicated burial grounds for the Muslim and Jewish communities. Local Equestrian Breeder Gains Gold at British Breeding Futurity Evaluations
Sarah Hall, of Chapel House Equestrian in Axbridge earned the highly respected "Gold" status in the first week of the British Breeding/Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity Evaluations with her yearling Flynnzatanz. The judges felt that first time breeder Sarah’s filly was a particularly attractive Dressage filly whose excellent type and harmonious conformation earned her the "Gold" status with an overall mark of 8.15.
The Futurity evaluations aim to identify British bred, young potential sport horses and ponies that are destined for careers in, dressage, eventing, show jumping, or endurance and may even find the Olympic Champions of the future. Entries are categorised by discipline with age groups for foals, yearlings, two and three-year olds. For the first time The British Breeding/Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity Evaluations saw breeders submitting their entries in a digital format in sets of detailed videos taken on hard and soft ground that were examined by a team of international experts, including a senior veterinarian, Baileys Horse Feeds nutritionist, linear scorer and highly experienced International evaluators from the UK, Holland and Germany. Sarah bred Flynnzatanz from her mare Zialita who she purchased as a 5-year-old dressage horse from Holland. Zialita was graded in Holland as a performance and brood mare.
18
Zialita is the half-sister of the PSG/Inter I horse Fabene and brings the proven performance breeding of the Grand Prix dressage stallion Charmeur (Florencio x Jazz). The direct motherline has also produced international 1.40m showjumper Go Go Move and the stallion Zenturio who sired several successful international showjumpers. Sarah knew she had a mare with lots of potential and was looking for a stallion with a great temperament which is one of the reasons she chose Fidertanz who is an incredibly powerful and charismatic stallion known for his exceptional rideability and outstanding movement. Fidertanz is by Fidermark I, who was the winner of his stallion performance test, a Bunderschampion in Germany, a Grand Prix winner. Sarah says “Flynnzantanz isn’t a big flashy mover, but she is active and correct and to have that with the right temperament is exactly what I wanted to breed”. The evaluators felt that Flynnzatanz was an eye-catching filly with beautiful type and correct conformation and gaits, aimed at the very top of the sport with bags of charm and “look-at-me” factor. This great result, especially for a first-time breeder, also qualifies her for pre-selection into the first ever Futurity Elite Online Auction, which will be held in September this year in cooperation with ClipMyHorse.TV. The Futurity evaluations will continue until 31st August. For more information, visit www.britishbreeding.co.uk

New law changes enough to balance interests of landlords and tenants? A series of new law changes have been introduced by the Government in an attempt to balance the interests of landlords and tenants in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. The economic uncertainty of rec ent months has led to several challenges arising in the property industry and the Government has stepped in with new measures which expert lawyers say are needed but may not go far enough to balance and protect the interests of both landlords and tenants. Reports of tenants being unable to, or failing to, pay their rents are widespread. Reports of landlords facing difficulties with meeting their financial commitments are also growing. Partner in Clarke Willmott’s property litigation team, Graham McIntyre, said: “New laws have been brought in to protect tenants who face cash flow issues and are having difficulty paying the March and June rent quarters. These measures are time limited and seem to predict some significant resumption of trade in Q3 and Q4. “The government is walking a tightrope between balancing the interests of landlords and tenants. “From a tenant perspective there is, in many cases, undoubtedly a need for protection where income streams have slowed or possibly stopped, but fixed costs (such as rent) have not. “But landlords have similar issues to face with rent collections for the June quarter having been at around 20% according to some surveys. Our nation’s commercial landlords are made up from institutional investors, pension funds and private owners, many with personal indebtedness to fund their assets.” Included in the latest announcements by the Government were several non-payment of rent enforcement options including:
20
•
Restricting bailiff (CRAR) action against tenants to cases where the rent is more than 189 days overdue (extended from 90 days)
•
A Landlord’s ability to forfeit for non-payment of rent has been delayed to 30 September 2020 (previously the moratorium extended to 30 June)
•
The use of statutory demands and winding up petitions has been effectively banned until after 30 September 2020 unless the relevant [landlord] creditor can can establish that COVID-19 has not had an effect on the relevant [tenant] debtor’s finances or the relevant debtor would be in the same position in any event.
“What is clear is that the current moratoriums cannot continue indefinitely,” continued Graham. “That appears to be the driver behind the Code of Practice for the Commercial Property Sector published by the government on 19 June 2020. The core aim of the Code is to encourage commercial tenants and landlords to work together to protect viable businesses, with a core driver being to encourage openness between the parties about the financial situations they find themselves and to seek accommodations to allow both to operate through the difficulties. “It is undoubtedly the case that there is a community of interest between landlords and tenants at this time if both wish to preserve their businesses through these choppy waters. However previous attempts to encourage a less adversarial approach to relations have not always been fully adopted. Take the Lease Code for example – a wonderful idea both loved for its intentions and ignored when it does not meet with a party’s commercial interests. “Perhaps the current crisis will be a sufficient shock to change the dynamic of the way business works. Or perhaps further government intervention will be required to balance the interest of landlords and tenants more actively.” If you would like to find out more about the issues currently faced by landlords and tenants please visit the Clarke Willmott Covid Hub https://www.clarkewillmott.com/supporting-you-through-covid-19-coronavirus-results/?eid=6918&fid=28. Bristol's musical and creative community joins together for Sky Orchestra. The line-up of celebrated and emerging Bristol musicians and artists involved in a massive musical dawn chorus set to take place in the city this month has been announced. Serenading people in their homes with specially commissioned new music, the Sky Orchestra is planned to offer people hope for the future and showcase the creative talent of the city. A flotilla of seven hot air balloons will deliver the instrumental dawn chorus from the sky to create an uplifting visual and musical experience in surround sound.
Outgoing Bristol City Poet Vanessa Kisuule has written a spoken word contribution which she is recording whilst renowned theatre and TV writer, composer and sound designer Elizabeth Purnell has created the string arrangements. Drew Morgan is the cello soloist for the piece. Emerging young Bristol talent performing includes Jo Bacon, Jerome Gamble and Joe Harding on the guitar, with Tom Nosek providing the vocals. Both Stew Jackson and Jerome Gamble will be playing electric guitars in balloons live during the Sky Orchestra performance.
Sky Orchestra - A New Dawn for Bristol is an arts project by renowned international Bristol artist Luke Jerram and Bristol-based BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones. It features the premiere of a new composition commissioned by Bristol Old Vic.
Planned by Dan and Luke since the beginning of the lockdown, the local ballooning crews are being brought together by lead pilot Peter Dalby. The performance has only just been made possible as social distancing restrictions have been relaxed to allow pilots and crews to work together safely. To avoid public crowds turning up to watch the launch, the dates and times of the performance are a secret. The performance will be announced on the day, just as the balloons take off.
Now, the incredible line-up of Bristol musical and artistic contributors joining forces for the project has been revealed. Grant Marshall, founder member of Massive Attack, Stew Jackson, current writer and producer for Massive Attack, and Adrian Utley, founder member of Portishead, are all involved in either creating or playing on the soundtrack.
People are encouraged to capture the experience on camera and share their photos and video on social media, using the hashtag #skyorchestra. Funds raised from the sale of the EP of the musical composition, which will be available to stream via all mainstream music streaming services, will be donated to support emerging musicians in the city.

Sky Orchestra was first performed in the city at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in 2003, and in 2011 flew across the Capital for the London Olympics 2012. Dan Jones, a BAFTA and three-time Ivor Novello award-winning composer who balances his time creating large scale musical artworks with a prolific career writing music for screen, is co-creating the new score.
"I'd love to see how people experience the Sky Orchestra from around the city so please do share your photos and videos on social media, using the hashtag #skyorchestra."
He said: "We're excited to be bringing together some of Bristol's most celebrated musicians alongside emerging young talent from across the city; Bristol continues to be a launchpad for musical innovation that spreads right around the world. This is a great opportunity for all of us to thank the city as a continued source of inspiration."
Tom Morris from Bristol Old Vic, which commissioned the new musical score said: "All of Bristol is a theatre and the safest performance space in the world is the sky. Bristol Old Vic may be closed, for now, but the ears and eyes and hearts of all Bristolians are not and the need for inspiring work by our most extraordinary artists is greater than ever under the effect of the pandemic. We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with Luke and Dan and a host of Bristolian musicians on this wonderful project, their gift to the city during lockdown. May it bring hope and delight to all who see and hear it."
Luke Jerram, who is well known for artworks such as Museum of the Moon, Play Me I'm Yours and Park and Slide, explains: "As the city begins to unlock, we wanted a way to deliver an uplifting experience to people in their homes. Something spectacular, yet somehow intimate; to create a sense of renewal, hope and rebirth, to raise the public's spirits and mark a moment in time.
With seven hot air balloons positioned over a city, this makes it one of the largest surround sound artworks in the world.
Sky Orchestra - A New Dawn for Bristol is taking place with kind permission from Bristol City Council, within social distancing guidelines.

A & D RECOVERY
City & Port Of Bristol Bowls With no friendly or competitive bowling possible this season the only way to bowl is to enjoy a roll up with friends at the club. Two hour pre-booked sessions played within rules set out by Bowls England has seen a dozen members in action on the green, much improved from last year. Whilst bowling is limited there is no limit to the amount of work taking place on and around the green. The green-keeper has continued to work as he usually does to keep the green in top condition. Volunteers from within the club have also worked hard to keep the green surround, buildings and all things inside the buildings clean and tidy so that all is ready for when bowling in a more traditional sense resumes. The club is grateful to everyone who has made a contribution in any way. There was a very big landmark in the history of the club on June 9th this year. It was fifty years ago that day since a meeting at the Avonmouth Office of the Port of Bristol Authority decided that they should go forward with plans to form a bowls club based at the Port Authority. There is a need to find new members for next season and the 2021 pre-season advertising campaign will focus on bringing young or younger people to the club. Bowling is the Sport for all --- all ages and all abilities.
There was an initial membership of around thirty, all men, and they arranged to play home games at the original Avonmouth Bowls Club Green. That was in 1970 and Paul Bywater as Fixtures Secretary quickly set about finding teams to play against. He did find some and the newly formed club was soon enjoying all that there is to enjoy in bowling. The Green Share continued until the 1974 season when the brand new PBA Green was opened and has been played on ever since. Looking forward --- the club that grew from that meeting in 1970 is hoping to return to a full programme of bowling in 2021. This year’s cancelled Summer Tour is re-scheduled for the corresponding week next year, at The Langham Hotel in Eastbourne. There are many very good young bowlers in the County of Gloucestershire to which City and Port is affiliated. Boys and Girls can become successful by starting to bowl at a young age. There are many examples in the county of young people going to the green with Mum or Dad, starting out bowling with very small woods but learning the art of bowling and that same young person a few years down the line is at the National Finals, played each year at Leamington Spa. The City and Port Club has in the past had National Finalists so --- why not do it again? Why can this club not follow others in the county and produce stars of the future?
For further information about the club and how to become involved please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.
