Mikes letter
First things first I hope everyone is staying safe and are well! There will be light at the end of the tunnel, a wise man said to me a fews days ago “ Be thankful for what we have and take each day as it comes never lose hope and stay positive” With the media ramping up our anxiety every day maybe we should avoid the news and focus on the positives like more family time at home, getting those DIY jobs done, gardening play some board games or even have a few quiet drinks at home. The world was so fast paced we had very little time for anything. . The other day I went shopping in the morning and on the drive home I found myself driving at a leisurely pace with some music playing singing out loud to myself, not because I have no cares in the world thats so far away from the true being self-employed. But because I’ll have no control over what happens next. So just enjoy this extended break where you can. Finally a message to our front line key workers especially the NHS bloody well done and a massive thank you to you all. #staypositive Till next month stay at home ,protect the NHS and save lives

Rented homes set to become safer with new law
Landlords and Tenants need to be aware of new laws arriving on April 1st to improve electrical safety and raise standards. The majority of issues relate to the lack of safety devices protecting users, generally RCD’s for socket outlets & bathrooms. The fix for these problems can often be a replacement consumer unit. As a rule of thumb, unless, properties are relatively new or rewired since 2011, they are likely to fail.
As experienced Electricians, this has been on our radar for a couple of years now, so we welcome this finally becoming law this spring. This long overdue legislation is going to have a significant impact on some landlords, who finally will have to take action and bring their properties up to standard.
Our advice to Landlords, get them done now as there is going to be high demand in the summer when this is enforced and there is currently plenty of time to get the remedial work done.
They will be required to have their properties inspected by an approved electrician and the installation must be in good order or put right within 28 days. This comes with a financial penalty of up to £30,000 for non-compliance, enforced by the local council. We have been inspecting properties, throughout the area, for a number of years now so have an excellent understanding of the general condition of properties. Sadly, it is believed, less than 40% of installations currently inspected are of a ‘satisfactory’ standard. Quality and standards, as we experience on a regular basis, are often overlooked either by ignorance or a reluctance to finance safety.
LA Electrical are Fully Approved NICEIC electrical contractors, offering Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) as well as general installation work. Be aware; the lesser qualified Domestic Installer’ electrician is not approved for this type of inspection work. Always check the credentials and insurance of any contractor working on your properties.

Your Garden In April
Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. April showers are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.
8
The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest. Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should be newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after mowing with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Plant of the month: Rhododendron Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however and will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

Protect cash - this may seem obvious but cut back on discretionary spending. If staff are on zero hours contracts, don’t be tempted to pay more than Well the time has come for us to work from home you have to. Better that they have a job when this as per the government guidance. Aside from being is over, so it may seem mean, but the government a little bit inundated with queries it’s still business is offering help to these individuals, although we’d as usual as far as we are concerned. Ask suppliers for this and stay safe. extended credit terms if you are still trading through this and speak to suppliers if you are not. When we I’m sure you’ll agree that this week has been pretty come out of this, we will still need those unprecedented. The only time I can recall anything relationships. Speak to customers and agree like the uncertainty surrounding business today payment plans where necessary. Some guaranteed is 9/11, but even then, things settled down pretty cash in is better than none. quickly from a business perspective. The government are holding daily press conferences and I’d recommending watching them for updates rather than listening to the rumour mill. I’ve sent a couple of these e-mails now, but it seems clear that the government response for small businesses has been underwhelming, particularly in times of such uncertainty. The chancellor will be making an announcement this afternoon which I will report back on this evening. I’m hoping he goes much further in affording businesses some help. I’ll include some information on government initiatives at the bottom of this e-mail, but for now there are steps we can take. Crisis Management - if you have staff then consider whether they are properly briefed in what to do in the current environment, are your policies still appropriate or do they need amending? Communicate proactively. maintaining good relations with staff, customers, suppliers, lenders and other stake holders is likely to help you trade for longer under difficult circumstances and having good relations will help you get back to normal when this crisis is over.
10
Think very carefully before putting your own money in. It’s bad enough to have a business fail, but to have a business fail and lose your life savings is even worse. Explore the government initiatives to see if they are doing anything to help your business sector.
Explore other opportunities - Jobs that you wouldn’t normally look at may be a lifeline today. if your business has seen a fall in demand, then can your skills be applied in areas that are still in demand? Without wanting to sound melodramatic, it’s about survival at the moment for a lot of businesses so turning your hand to something slightly different for a short time might see you through. So, tradesmen that normally work business to consumer for example might find opportunities to do business to business. Are there new markets your business could enter in to? Finance - As mentioned previously, think very carefully about putting your own money into the business, or indeed borrowing where a director’s guarantee is required. However, preferential loans from lenders, or even renegotiating existing loans may well be possible. Explore all of the government help available and keep checking as government policy is changing daily.
So, these are some tips from me, but what is our government doing to help? here is a link https:// www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-aboutcovid-19/covid-19-support-for-businesses, and the highlights below: •
A Statutory Sick Pay relief package for SMEs
•
A 12-month business rates holiday for all retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in England Small business grant funding of £10,000 for all business in receipt of small business rate relief or rural rate relief
•
•
Grant funding of £25,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000
•
The Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme offering loans of up to £5 million for SMEs through the British Business Bank
•
A new lending facility from the Bank of England to help support liquidity among larger firms, helping them bridge coronavirus disruption to their cash flows through loans
•
The HMRC Time To Pay Scheme
More can be found on the website. As mentioned previously there will be an announcement from the chancellor later today, so keep an eye on that, or keep an eye out for my next update. Stay safe and please feel free to pass this on to any other businesses you know that could use some of the advice.

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club In the summer of 1983 a new lady bowler arrived at the bowls club, her name ---- Heather Champion. Within three seasons she, together with her friend Pat Jones had won the county pairs and in doing so went on to compete in the National Finals in Leamington Spa.
No wins at bowls this year --- playing against two teams from last year’s visit ---- Moira Bowls Tour and Angel Tonbridge plus Malvern Hills the games were enjoyable and the closest one to a win was on Monday against Moira when the loosing margin was just three shots.
This was the first of several appearances at the National Finals for Heather --- she later played in the triples and the fours. She represented Gloucestershire on numerous occasions at a time when there was a strict dress code with an inspection taking place before play commenced. Not only the bowler but also the woods were inspected to make sure they had the correct date stamp and carried the right stickers. It is a little more relaxed today!
A Ten Pin Bowling night has become very much a part of the week and this year was no exception. Eighteen of the touring joined in the fun on the hotels four lane facilities. There were prizes for the top scoring lady and the top scoring man. This year it was ---- Chrissy Carpenter, Top Lady with 110 but for the men it was a three way split between Peter Cornish, Bill Cook and Ken Grimes --- they all scored 94.
With her husband Brian, Heather played in many competitions away from the club as well as competing successfully in competitions at the club. She held a number of offices over the years. As well as secretary she was at one time chairperson and prior to that ladies captain. Heather gave a great deal to the club and was always there when things needed to be done. But this year Heather called time on her long held job as secretary and handed over to Peter Cornish. For her many years of service to the club Heather was honoured at the Start of Season Meeting on March 12th. President David Hinksman paid tribute to Heather with an account of at least some of what she had done and achieved in thirty seven years of dedicated and loyal service. Paul Bywater who is the clubs longest standing member --- he was bowling for the PBA well before the current green opened in 1974 – paid tribute to Heather before presenting a splendid bench, bouquet of flowers and a picture of her bearing the words Heather
Away from the various forms of bowling some folk spent time in the huge Aztec Pool, others ventured as far as Dartmouth or the wonderful Living Coasts and there was lots of time to enjoy the snooker challenge or a game of pool. Evening entertainment – Bingo and all, rounded things off for the day ---who said cards?!!

There is something you have either put on the back burner or chosen to ignore but it is something you would be wiser to deal with at this time. A message from Slimming World Founder and Chair, Margaret Miles Bramwell. #thatfeeling To our treasured Slimming World members everywhere
As I write this, our teams are working behind the scenes to develop temporary ‘virtual’ community options that will ensure we can bring a remote Slimming World service to you at home. Our aim is to bring these to you next week (w/c 23rd March) if we possibly can - because we know that for many of you, the thought of trying to manage your weight alone at home, when life feels as though it’s been turned upside down is a frightening thought. And continuing to nourish our bodies with healthy, family-friendly, home-cooked meals has never been more important.
By now, you’ll probably have heard from your Consultant that, following the latest government guidance to businesses, we are, temporarily, Whilst a remote group will never be the same as suspending groups all over the UK and Ireland, with your physical Slimming World group, technology immediate effect. means that we can maintain connections even when we’re physically isolated from each other. In the whole world of help for slimmers, there’s nowhere like a Slimming World group. A Slimming World group is place where people find compassion and understanding, friendship and fun, a shot of motivation and the confidence to carry on, even when times get tough. Thanks to you and our wonderful Consultants - working together - our groups give people hope in a world that can sometimes feel full of desperation.
We may be apart but we do not have to be alone. Despite the difficulties we are about to face, we will face them together and, with our combined energy and creativity, determination and compassion, we will all resurface stronger, braver and fitter than ever.
We know (we’ve witnessed it so many times) our groups bring out the best in people. We recognise and applaud you, as you show that same compassion and kindness to others. Your warmth and kindness shines out and lights up the world. True to form, that is exactly what you’ve been doing throughout these past few weeks of uncertainty. And I can’t begin to tell you how happy and proud that’s made every single one of us at Slimming World. So, while we will stay exactly in line with all the advice set out by our countries’ leaders in their efforts to keep us as healthy as possible during this unprecedented crisis, we will therefore be suspending our groups for the time being. We will absolutely not be giving up on YOU or our life-changing, life-saving organisation. Not once, in the past 50 years, have we ever done that. Not once has a tough time beaten Slimming World and it’s not about to beat us now!

Stay with us, because we will always stay with you. With all my love always, to you our members, your Consultants and your families, on behalf of the great family of Slimming World.
