Mikes letter

So it seems like all systems go at the moment as some businesses return to work. However, there is some debate on whether the kids need to go back to school on the 1st June. Personally I think schools should not return till September then this will give the government and the teachers time to get their heads around it.

I feel for all those staff at Rolls Royce that are about to be laid off due to the air industry taking a massive hit, the next thing will be the air line staff if it already has not happened. On a better note congratulations to Sir Tom Moore for raising over thirty two million pounds for the NHS and receiving a knighthood, very well deserved and a testament that if we put our minds to it we can achieve anything including beating this invisible battle with Covid-19. One final thing, a massive “Thank you” to everyone thats subscribed to this weekly magazine and enter our competition to be in with a chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher without you it would not have happened. Also I am very excited to announce next month will see our biggest competition ever !!

Ambitious Plans for Eco and Community Housing in Bristol Bridge Farm, once a landmark building in Stapleton village, but now in a rather sorry state, is to be restored by a local community group. And what is more, a community of self-built affordable eco homes is planned to spring up alongside it.

The driving force behind the ambitious project is Ashley Vale Action Group, or AVAG, the team of self-builders and eco pioneers who built the Yard in St Werburgh’s. When the opportunity came along to buy Bridge Farm and 4 acres of land in 2018, the group jumped at the chance. “We just fell in love with it” said Jackson Moulding, one of the directors of AVAG. “The Farmhouse is gorgeous, it has wonderful Georgian lines, it’s got real grandeur about it. It was a really imposing presence on the hillside above the river Frome when it was built in the 1730s. It’s looking tatty now, but we can’t wait to get stuck into the repairs and bring it back to its former glory.” The farmhouse is a familiar landmark, as it stands on Bell Hill which you see on your left as you leave Bristol on the M32. But there is much more to Bridge Farm. “We’re also really excited about the farm courtyard – lots of old stone, with lots of potential” continues Jackson. “We’ll need planning permission and listed building consent, but we’ve got some great ideas to turn this courtyard into the bustling heart of the community. We hope to have workshops in what were cow stalls, a café with its own bakery, a couple of live/work units in the taller barns, and a farm shop where local produce can be bought.” It’s really important to AVAG and everyone involved in the project that we respect the heritage of Bridge Farm, while re-purposing it for the future. Since we bought the farm we have been growing on the land. There’s a gang of volunteers, called the Bridge Farmily, who are really committed.” Across the slope beside the farmhouse, AVAG is planning a variety of new build units, ranging from 1 bed flats to 3 bed houses, clustered around a large central green space and community building.

6

A planning application is due to be submitted in August. Car parking will be limited and will cleverly be tucked away behind the community building. “When we visited Springhill Co-housing in Stroud we particularly liked that cars did not dominate” said Jenny Heyer, one of the Bridge Farm volunteers. “So, Bridge Farm is designed for people to walk, or cycle, or get the bus. Footpaths and green areas interconnect the houses rather than tarmac. This will create a space that is peaceful and safe.” The community building will include shared facilities such as a laundry and a play space for kids, a kitchen and a large dining area where residents can all eat together once a week. “The act of cooking and eating together really helps create a strong community. And community work days, where everyone helps each other out. There’s no shortage of work at Bridge Farm!” laughs Jenny. “Coronavirus has brought our monthly work days to an end for now, but it really underlines how important, strong, healthy communities are.” For the moment, the hillside is thickly covered with brambles and deep grass. But AVAG’s vision is that soon it will be a hive of self-build activity. “We want to make self-build affordable, and accessible to everyone,” says Jackson. “We know from our own experience at the Yard how fulfilling it is to build your own home – especially when your mates pitch in to help.” AVAG’s vision is for each home to be built as sustainably as possible, south facing for solar gain and super insulated. Many of them will be terraced, to save both money and heat. As befits an old farm, lots of green space will be preserved for wildlife corridors, growing fruit and vegetables, gardens, and recreation areas. “We’re still developing our plans for the site and are looking for people to get involved. Volunteers have organised themselves into working groups, focussing on issues like affordability, growing space and sustainable building materials. Bridge Farm isn’t just community led housing – its community designed and built as well.”

New Skills for Health framework for supporting autistic people and people with a learning disability informs vital training of NHS and social care workers Despite the fact it has been widely reported that coronavirus ‘knows no borders’, there is sadly no doubting that the sudden and unexpected change and disruption to everyday life it has caused, has posed even more challenges for our most vulnerable in society. In particular, our people with autism, people with learning disabilities, and their families. Whilst new guidance was published on April 24 for care workers and personal assistants who support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, it’s clear that it’s so much harder for this cohort of our communities. Their routine which they rely on to bring structure to the otherwise uncertain world, was virtually taken away overnight, leaving them less able to cope with navigating the current upheaval, confusion and uncertainty brought about by Covid-19. This population group across the UK already face healthcare disparities and someone who knows this all too well is Paula McGowan, who following the untimely death of her youngest child Oliver in 2016, who had learning disabilities and high functioning autism, has dedicated her life to campaigning for equal healthcare for people just like him, across the globe.

The latest new capabilities framework for Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) has recently been published in April 2020. This week, Skills for Health caught up with Paula, who now lives in Australia, to discuss the impact of coronavirus on those with autism and how this framework will help contribute to ensuring those in need receive the high quality care they deserve and improve life expectancy. “Every person has a right to equal good quality healthcare, sadly this does not always happen and there is clear evidence that people with a learning disability experience poorer access to healthcare resulting in worse health outcomes. One of the starkest inequalities is that people with a learning disability experience very high rates of premature mortality. “Most recently, the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review Programme has highlighted the persistence of health inequalities and that people with a learning disability die, on average, 15-20 years sooner than people without a learning disability. My 18-year-old son Oliver McGowan was one of those people to lose his life avoidably. “To some extent we are all struggling to cope and adapt to life amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was Paula’s petition for face to face autism and disability training to be made essential for every NHS and social care worker, which led to the government confirming in November 2019, that The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training will be developed by NHS England and Health Education England (HEE) and be rolled out across the country.

Escalate that a thousand times over for those who have learning disabilities and/or autism. They are frightened and confused. They and their families feel forgotten, they feel that they are not getting the support they need. Those whose children who are in care homes are not able to visit their vulnerable children. The pain and trauma for them and their children is unbearable.

Informing this vital training, which is currently being trialled by the Department of Health and Social Care, are Skills for Health’s core capabilities frameworks for supporting autistic people and people with a learning disability. Commissioned by HEE, Skills for Health led the development of these frameworks, guided by a steering group of key stakeholder organisations including a range of Royal Colleges, NHS Trusts, voluntary sector organisations and professional bodies.

“It is more crucial now than ever, that we as a society reach out and offer support where we can. Many charities such as Mencap and The National Autistic Society are doing their best to reach out to autistic and/or learning disabled people, their families, and carers. But we can all play our part, by following the government guidelines and adhering to social distancing. This in turn will stop the spread of the virus.

8

“I embrace the ACP Capabilities Framework because it ensures that practitioners understand the needs and nuances of learning disabled and/or autistic people. It ensures health care practitioners and support workers have the necessary skills to ensure this group of people receive standardised quality health care that is individualised and appropriate to the person. The framework ensures thatpeople are kept at the heart of all decision making, enabling them to make choices for themselves. “This new framework will support The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training which I personally believe to be essential for the training being a success. I strongly believe that if the ACP Capabilities framework had been in place when Oliver was alive, he may well be here today.”

Ashok Roy OBE, Clinical Advisor for Learning Disability & Autism, HEE said: “This framework supports the development and planning of the highly skilled section of the workforce dealing with people with learning disability and autism. The people making complex decisions and dealing with the highest risk. "It comes at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic which has had a disproportionately adverse impact on this vulnerable section of society. The framework will help develop advanced clinical practitioners meet the growing demand for their skills and reduce the likelihood of restrictive practices.”

Paula McGowan’s instrumental campaigning for people with autism and/or learning disabilities has given a voice to many people who are not always able to speak up for themselves. As Sector Skills The framework outlines what good governance of Council for Health, Skills for Health are proud to services for people with a learning disability and/or autism should include and will have a range play a part in ensuring that all those who care for them, across the NHS and social care sector, have of uses by different organisations, including employers and commissioners, as it can be used to the right skills and training to understand their needs to provide the high-quality care they deserve. underpin commissioning, workforce planning, education and training, as well as the development of career pathways and new ways of working.

Bristol Energy Debacle

Over the last four years the Labour mayor of Bristol has wasted around £40 million of council tax payers’ money propping up failing energy supplier, Bristol Energy. As the vast majority of Bristol Energy’s customers live outside of Bristol, the mayor has in effect been subsidising their energy needs at our expense! Despite numerous calls from various opposition groups to stop throwing good money after bad, the mayor claimed until very recently that the company was a viable business. Now we have the news that Ernst & Young has been appointed to look into its potential for sale. Unfortunately, this sale is unlikely to recoup more than a tiny fraction of the millions given to it by Marvin Rees. We believe that an independent inquiry should be launched as soon as it is possible to do so, following the current COVID-19 pandemic, to examine the many failures that led to millions of pounds of council tax payers’ money being wasted. It has been estimated that so far Bristol City Council has ‘invested’ at least £37.7 million into Bristol Energy. In fact, Since April 2018, Mayor Rees has increased the amount of public cash put into the business several times while at the same time attempting to make cuts to crucial council services such as the SEND budget for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Labour mayor and his administration have repeatedly insisted that the business was viable despite many industry experts and professionals claiming that Bristol Energy was unlikely to make a profit any time soon. The mayor has also suggested that the only reason Bristol City Council are looking to sell Bristol Energy is to assist the council finances, which are suffering due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, this disregards the many warnings the administration were given over several years about the company lacking long-term viability, predating the Covid 19 crisis. Opposition parties have now called for an Extraordinary Full Council Meeting to discuss the many failings that lead to such a huge amount of money being wasted on a business that was never likely to return a profit. We are demanding an independent inquiry with a remit to fully examine the establishment and funding of Bristol Energy in order to ensure that the public is fully informed of how £37.7 million of their money was spent, and also to ensure that lessons are learned so that such waste can be avoided in the future. Sea Mills 100 – celebrating our history lockdown style. Having opened the Sea Mills 100 museum in the refurbished phone box on Sea Mills Square in June 2019, the last thing the project expected was closing it again even before the centenary year was complete. COVID 19 and lockdown has meant the museum has had to be temporarily closed and all events postponed for the time being. There’s been a silver lining though, while physical events aren’t possible the website has had a boost. Parts of the project that would not have been completed until much later have been brought forward and the VE Day display we had planned for our local libraries has appeared online instead. The new section on the website Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle War Stories has had contributions from local residents and from those whose families have long since moved from the area.

Article and images supplied by Mary Milton

It includes stories from WW1 and WW2 and is a tribute to some of the families who grew up or lived in the area. “I think in a strange way we really benefited from lockdown”, says the project co-ordinator Mary Milton “I appealed for information relating to Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle people during the world wars and found lots of people had the time to look through their old photographs and call their relatives for missing information”. The Sea Mills estate was built to meet housing need after WW1 and many of the houses where occupied by men returning from war and their families, the first children brought up on the estate would have been old enough to fight in WW2, so the beginnings of the estate were very much framed by war. You can read the Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle war stories at www.seamills100.co.uk where you can also find a virtual tour of the museum and a self-led walking tour of the estate.

How to stay alert and stay safe whilst moving home during the Coronavirus

The last couple of months has seen many industries having to adapt to how they run their businesses. At NEXA we have put various procedures in place in line with government guidelines to protect you and our team. Over the last week there has been a slight easing of the lockdown and on Tuesday night we were told that government advice on moving home during the coronavirus outbreak had been updated. So how does this effect you, as a buyer or seller? Let us tell you how you can move home in Brsitol during the coronavirus pandemic. STAY FOCUSED When you decide to move home there is lots of anticipation in the air; you start to look for that new dream home, one that will meet your future wants and needs. Viewing properties is exciting, and although the process of finding your next home has changed, we hope it won’t dampen your spirits. Remember the search is just the beginning and your sights should be focused on what your new home will bring. GETTING READY TO MOVE In Bristol properties have still been coming onto the market during lockdown, but now we are able to visit to take photos and videos to be able to market your home effectively. Of course, should you or a member of your household be showing any Covid symptoms and/or are having to self-isolate, we won’t be able to visit until it’s safe to do so. VIEWINGS Buyers, we know you will no doubt begin your search for a new home online, and we encourage you to do so. In ‘normal’ times you have the luxury of viewing every property that catches your eye, but as viewings will be restricted, only those that are close to making an offer will be invited to view. We will provide you with as many tools as possible, including virtual tours and professional photographs, to help you make a decision. If you are invited to view a property please make sure you attend with only members of your household and keep numbers limited to a minimum. When arriving at the viewing you will be asked to wash your hands and also to not touch any surfaces.

14

Sellers, viewings will take place by appointment only and be limited to one a day. Whilst preparing your home for a viewing, please make sure you open all internal doors and any necessary cupboards. The government also request that you provide handwashing facilities and a towel that is used only for that viewing, or disposable paper towels. We’ve always accompanied viewings and that won’t change; we will of course be following social distancing rules as far as possible. We would normally ask you to be absent whilst a viewing is taking place – this will continue to be the case, as it will also minimise contact and risk. After the viewing, we would advise you to clean all surfaces including door handles and throw away any used paper towels or wash the designated hand towel. You will be reminded of your responsibilities related to viewings when you list a property or register your interest with us. OFFERS ACCEPTED Yes, you can make an offer on a property, should one catch your eye, and the sales process will continue. Although we work hard to avoid them, delays can happen in any move – but be mindful that, should anyone in your household (or theirs) show signs or coronavirus and/or need to self-isolate, your moving date may have to change. With this in mind, check with your solicitor or c onveyancer that your contract is flexible to accommodate a possible delay. If you’re buying a property, you may have an urge to visit your potential new home again before moving day so you can take measurements and cement ideas in your mind. This must be agreed by all parties, and you will be required to follow the same hygiene measures that you did when you viewed the property. Although it isn’t always possible, you need to make sure you try to maintain social distancing rules wherever you can.

We know you may wish to ask tradespeople to inspect certain elements of the property before contracts are signed, and there is specific guidance on this, so please consult with a member of our team so we can ensure that all requirements are met before they visit your potential new home. SURVEYS AND SEARCHES Surveys and searches are a normal part of the process of buying a property. Your solicitor or conveyancer should be able to undertake the searches online, and it comes to having your property surveyed (we’re not talking about the one carried out by your mortgage lender, this is for financial purposes only and will not inform you of any issues related to the condition of the property) the surveyor must follow the guidance that has been laid out for professionals working in people’s homes and those on social distancing. MOVING When contracts have been exchanged and a completion date set, and no one is showing symptoms of Covid-19 or has to self-isolate, it’s time to get excited as you’re about to move into your new home in Bristol. Removal firms have also had to adjust the way they work to ensure that they keep everyone safe. As they could get really busy, we would advise you contact them as soon as you can to get them booked.

Work with your removal company and get their advice on packing, as it’s recommended that you do as much of the packing as possible yourself. We know there will be exceptions to this, so it’s always worth having a thorough conversation with the removal company when you enquire. Try and clean all your items with cleaning products before they are passed over to the removal company. When your current property is empty, give it a deep clean so it’s in a safe condition when the new owners arrive. You will be wanting the owners of the house you are buying to extend you the same courtesy. SUPPORTING YOU ALL THE WAY You can be assured our team at NEXA has been taking every possible measure to ensure that everyone in the chain remains safe whilst working hard to ensure that you move. At each step of the way you will be guided through the process, explaining how things have changed and the part you will need to play. We are here to answer any questions you may have and you can call me personally on 07807 778 350 or email jake@nexabristol.com So all that’s left to say is remember guys, stay alert and stay safe. Thank you.

First look at chocolate factory homes as housing market lockdown is lifted With Britain’s housing market due to re-open as the lockdown is eased, the first release of shared ownership homes at The Chocolate Factory in Greenbank has been announced. Eight new build apartments will be launched in June giving househunters the first opportunity to be a part of this exciting new development. The high specification apartments include 1 and 2-bedroom options in the heart of a popular BS5 neighbourhood. Located in Greenbank, the scheme takes its name from the former Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory which closed in 2006. Still a significant and muchloved part of the community, regeneration specialists, Generator South West, are honoring its historic past by keeping some of the original buildings. Once completed The Chocolate Factory will feature 140 new homes, workspace for local businesses, a café/bar and retail units, adding to the already vibrant community in Greenbank. There will also be a public open square with new access points directly onto the Bristol and Bath Railway Path so residents can enjoy the best of the Bristol countryside while being within easy reach of the City Centre. Generator South West’s Development Director, Jason Schofield, said:

16

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Yarlington to ensure we have a range of housing for all at The Chocolate Factory. We’re proud to be transforming this historic site which has stood derelict for many years and create something from which the whole community will benefit.” Chris Hill, Managing Director of CJ Hole, which is handling the sale of both the shared ownership and open market properties, said: “This is a really fantastic development in a popular area and with great links into the city centre. The design of the scheme along with the planned community spaces and retail and leisure units on site makes it a really exciting prospect for us to be involved in. “We are inviting anyone interested to contact our Redfield office to find out more.” The first shared ownership apartments at the hotly anticipated scheme will come onto the market in June and with the first 3-bedroom family homes made available for sale later on in the year. Prices for the first phase of apartments start at £81,000 for a 40% share. To register your interest or find out more about general launch at the development contact either CJ Hole on 0117 955 1817 or Savills on 0117 010 035. Marie Curie’s famous fundraising campaign goes virtual to recover devastated fundraising income Marie Curie’s famous Blooming Great Tea Party is going virtual this year and the charity needs Bristolian tea party hosts more than ever before to make up for the devastating effect the coronavirus crisis has had on the charity’s income. The end of life charity is calling on you to throw a Blooming Virtual Tea Party from home this summer. While staying indoors is the new normal, throwing a virtual tea party is a fun way to stay connected to the ones you love during this time and a great way to support nurses working on the frontline of the crisis.

“I’ve met their nurses before. They are inspiring, kind, caring and loving people who are currently caring for people at the end of their lives and keeping people out of hospital, helping the NHS cope with the Coronavirus crisis. Every last crumb of the money you raise will help people at the end of their lives. So please join me by raising a cuppa, and some money, in your lounge or garden for the Marie Curie Nurses on the front line”. Natalie Garland, Marie Curie South West Fundraising Manager said: “Our Blooming Great Tea Party looks a little different this year but I think everyone needs an excuse to meet up with their friends and family – online of course – and check in on the people they love. If you can do that while raising some money for Marie Curie, then your generous donations will enable us to help even more people at the end of their lives get the care they need in this time of uncertainty. “We rely on the support of the amazing public to ensure our nurses can keep caring for people. And while the coronavirus crisis has badly impacted our fundraising events, we hope by going virtual we’ll be able to raise the vital funds we need to keep supporting people in our communities across our region.”

In people’s homes across the South West the charity is caring for people with terminal illnesses, as well as people with Covid-19, and is protecting the NHS by keeping patients away from hospital. However, as the charity has stepped up its support for the nation, its fundraising income has been devastated by the impact of lockdown measures – it had to cancel its Great Daffodil Appeal in March and closed all its charity shops shortly after (including shops in Whitchurch and on Gloucester Road). That is why the charity and its celebrity ambassador, Mel Giedroyc, are encouraging everyone to download Zoom, Skype or Houseparty and connect with friends and family while raising some money at the same time. Cake lover and tea party extraordinaire, Mel Giedroyc says: “You can bake it, fake it, brew it or stew it – whatever your cup of tea, Marie Curie’s Blooming Great Tea Party is going ‘virtual’ this year and it’s a simple way to keep in touch with your chums, while raising money for a wonderful cause, which, I think you’ll agree, we all need right now". “Marie Curie needs to raise a massive £2.5million each week to care for the tens of thousands of people who need its nursing and hospice care. RESTARTING FERTILITY TREATMENT AT BCRM Following this week’s decision by the fertility regulator, the HFEA, allowing fertility clinics to apply to recommence routine treatments, the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM) has been named as one of the first clinics nationwide permitted to resume operations. Clinic director, Valentine Akande, said: “We are so very pleased to be announced as one of the clinics which can now restart the important work of helping people make babies. “We have been working hard during lockdown to ensure that now this moment has arrived we are fully prepared to provide a safe service to patients and a safe working environment for our staff with all the necessary precautions including PPE. “To this end, we have introduced more resources and innovations to allow us to deliver safe and streamlined care. “This means a different way of working and ensuring that attendance in the building is only where necessary, such as for tests, scans and procedures that cannot be done remotely.

22

“We are now in the process of personally contacting patients whose treatment with us was delayed or interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are very much looking forward to seeing our patients again.” In accordance with standard social distancing guidance, BCRM continues to offer consultations remotely, using telephone or video meetings such as Zoom. Any women or couples who wish to discuss having treatment and have not yet had an appointment are encouraged to book one because the clinic will be commencing treatment on a first-come-firstserved basis going forward. BCRM, which has the highest success rate in the South West for IVF, also offers a wealth of helpful information to women and couples experiencing fertility issues via their website, see www.FertilityBristol.com or to book a consultation call BCRM’s hotline on 0117 3018 605 or email info@BCRM. org.uk

Thank Cod for Fish and Chips!

Following the resounding success of last year’s National Fish and Chip Day, and in response to the Government’s recent announcements, we are absolutely delighted to say that our celebration of the nation’s favourite dish will go ahead in 2020, but a little later than planned ‪on Friday 4th September!

As well as being one of the most popular awareness days of the year, we want National Fish and Chip Day this year to be even more special as we say a very big thank you to this amazing industry who are at the centre of every community, and who have, when able to do so safely, adapted to keep us fed, and when that wasn’t possible have kept us all safe by remaining closed at great sacrifice to their business. All of them have shown great resilience throughout lockdown. So let's make National Fish and Chip Day 2020 the best yet as we bring together everyone involved in creating this iconic British dish; from Fish & Chip shops, pub chains, restaurants, retailers, to the fishermen and farmers who provide the sustainable and natural ingredients needed to create this family favourite.

26

Last year National Fish and Chip Day was a day like no other, with everyone talking about the nation's favourite dish from first thing in the morning until late at night! People across the country came together to celebrate their love of fish and chips. Shops reported their highest footfall of the year…even higher than Good Friday in many cases. 62 million people would have seen, heard or read about National Fish and Chip Day and our hashtag was #1 on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook from 8am until 8pm. This is the biggest food awareness day of the year and we would be delighted to help you generate some fabulous content. More information to follow but in the meantime, call Jo on 07734 050238 or email jo@risecommunications.co.uk or Sarah on 07786 261934 sarah@ risecommunications.co.uk if you would like to discuss feature ideas.

A THIRD OF UK MENTHOL SMOKERS LIKELY TO SWITCH TO BETTER ALTERNATIVES AFTER EU BAN ON MENTHOL CIGARETTES · Ban ‘significant moment’ for many smokers in Bristol and across the country · EU ban will impact 1.3M UK smokers who currently choose menthol cigarettes · 17% likely to quit smoking completely · One third likely to switch to an alternative such as vaping or heated tobacco A third of all menthol smokers are likely to switch to a new alternative following the ban on menthol cigarettes, new research by Populus, commissioned by Philip Morris Limited (PML), can reveal. Over 500 menthol smokers took part in the research which asked a series of questions to gauge how they are likely to respond after the ban comes into force on 20th May 2020. The ban, which will impact the UK’s 1.3 million menthol smokersi, is the result of an EU Directive and will go ahead regardless of Brexit.

Responding to a question as to what action they would take after the ban, a third of respondents indicated that it is ‘likely’ they would switch to an alternative like menthol heated tobacco products or menthol flavoured vapes - both unaffected by the ban. This would mean roughly 420,000 smokers switching overnight, signalling the biggest increase in smokers switching to alternatives since 2015.ii 17% of respondents – the equivalent to roughly 220,000 menthol smokers – were either ‘very likely’ (4%) or ‘fairly likely’ (13%) to quit smoking completely. The Populus research also found that over a quarter (26%) remained unaware of the impending ban. “The menthol cigarette ban is a significant moment for many smokers in Bristol and across the country,” said Peter Nixon, Managing Director of Philip Morris Limited, the maker of the IQOS heated tobacco product. “Our message is clear: quitting is best but if not possible then alternatives, like menthol heated tobacco or menthol flavoured vapes are good choices for menthol smokers and definitely a better option than continuing to smoke.”

THE HR DEPT ISSUES BUSINESS ADVICE, AS SCHOOLS LOOK TO REOPEN In a three-step COVID-19 recovery strategy launched last week, the government revealed a projected timeline of which businesses and areas of society can open and when.

The reopening of schools to more children plays an important role in restarting the economy by allowing many people to return to work. However, the proposed timeline to reopen schools has been the subject of much debate, as parents, teachers and unions have raised concerns over safety. This is likely to have a major knock-on effect for many businesses nationwide who are preparing for employees to return to work. What is the plan for reopening schools? UK schools continue to be open for vulnerable children and children of key workers. The second stage of the plan for schools aims to have reception, year one and year six children back at school in England only in small numbers from 1st June, to maximise their time with teachers before the summer holidays. How might this affect people management? Those who employ parents are going to need to consider the impact that this situation might have on their employees, and whether working parents will be able to return to the workplace when needed. Many schools may still be closed to most students when businesses are bringing employees back to work. Additionally, some parents may not feel it is safe to send their children back to school, and the Department for Education has stated that there will be no penalties should this be the case.

HR Solutions during school closures Flexibility is key. It has already been recommended that employers introduce staggered start times or shift work to assist social distancing. Flexibility of working hours can also be of great help to those with family commitments. Working from home wherever possible is also still highly recommended. But those with young children may find it hard to focus or complete deadline driven tasks. Offering reduced hours or seeing if certain tasks can be re-delegated can help. For roles that cannot be done from home, sharing your return to work safety plans may reassure those who are worried for their own health and safety. Alternatively, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has been extended until October, and you may find that putting some staff on furlough leave is the right solution for your business. There are many rules involved, such as employees can’t do any work whilst furloughed, so please ask us if you are seeking further understanding of how to utilise the scheme. School staff can already be tested for coronavirus and the government has extended testing capacity to include children and their families who show symptoms from 1st June. Sharing this news with employees could provide some peace of mind about sending their kids back to school. You may find that there are a few bumps in the road to reopening your business, as both you and your employees adjust to a very different way of working. Make time for mental health by listening to employees concerns and remember that we are here to listen to yours.

Employees are entitled to a reasonable amount of unpaid time off work to deal with emergencies involving dependants, such as arranging childcare at short notice. But if schools are not accessible and friends/family are in isolation, finding someone to watch the kids could prove to be a real challenge. As parents try to maintain a good work/life balance during trying times, employers can help in a number of ways, both to support employees and ensure minimal disruption to the business. By pre-empting potential problems before they arise, it is possible to find a suitable work around.

Avon Riding Centre RDA launches emergency appeal to care for horses Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled, an independent charity and one of the largest of the Riding for the Disabled Association's (RDA)'s centres in the UK, is launching an emergency funding appeal today.

Many of the volunteers are over retirement age and relied on their regular sessions to keep them fit and to maintain mental health via vital social connections.

The appeal will support the Avon Riding Centre through this immediate crisis with vital money being used to care for 23 horses and ponies.

Prior to the coronavirus closedown, the Centre had embarked on an ambitious development plan to diversify and provide further services at its estate in connection with new partner charities for both the local and the wider communities of Bristol and North Somerset. These plans will be put into effect as soon as Government advice allows, but only if the Centre can achieve its funding appeal target of ÂŁ150,000.

The centre operates from a 100-acre estate in Henbury, Bristol (BS10) and the emergency fund appeal will help to support it following the enforced shutdown. It currently faces serious financial hardship and without a vital injection of funds is at risk of permanent closure. The Centre relies almost entirely on its income from riding, non-mounted therapeutic sessions with horses and Hippotherapy. Activity at the Centre may have stopped, but care for its horses and ponies, including feed, hay and vets bills, has necessarily continued. The emergency fundraising appeal is needed to support the costs of caring for the horses and to enable the Centre to be able to re-open (in a phased manner) when appropriate.

Charity patron Jonathan Dimbleby said: "Long after COVID-19 becomes a terrible memory, people with disabilities will still need support. Without your help now this wonderful charity which meets that need brilliantly may be forced to close permanently and not just during the lockdown. You can help make the difference between its life and its death. Please do so."

Donations can be made via the Centre's Just The Centre's closure has negatively affected not Giving page details of which can be found on its only its beneficiaries (around 200 disabled adults website www.avonridingcentre.org.uk. and children), many of whom rely on their weekly RDA sessions for physical therapy, health and wellbeing, but also their families and carers who greatly value the difference that access to the Centre's specially-trained horses makes to the children and adults in their care. In addition to the Centre's beneficiaries more than 200 regular volunteers were involved each week at the Centre providing support to the riders.
