‘Love it, cook it, share it’, say Bristol couple who’ve lost 9 Stone A couple who share the same healthy foods which enabled them to lose a combined weight of 9 stone without feeling hungry, has helped to launch a month-long food festival in Bristol. The Bedminster Down Slimming World group celebrated the start of “Free Food February”, which is named after the healthy Free Foods its members can enjoy without weighing, counting or measuring when losing weight on Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. The launch party saw Robert Frost & Jason Griffiths named the group’s Couple of the Year 2016. Free Food February is being held in Slimming World groups throughout the UK. and runs from 1st to 27th February. The aim is to show how members lose weight without hunger discovering (or rediscovering) a love of cooking. It coincides with the publication of Slimming World’s latest recipe book “Free Food Feasts”. Members of the group, which meets every Thursday at Bedminster Down Ex Service Club created a delicious feast for the event. The slimmers brought along dishes made entirely from ‘Free Foods’, which include fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs and more, showing that Slimming World members never need to suffer the hunger pangs that usually see people on other weight-loss plans. throwing in the towel The slimmers have challenged one another to share their new love of healthy food with the local community, by cooking for their families, hosting dinner parties and making nibbles for their colleagues Robert 39 and Jason 33 believe preparing, cooking and eating the same meals and supporting one another on their weight loss journey has been key to their success. Robert who has lost 5 stone 11 1/2st lbs, says: “When we first joined Slimming World we couldn’t believe how much food we could eat and still lose weight.
Making small changes to the way we cooked our meals meant we could still enjoy all of our favourite meals like beef & butternut stir fry, curries & chips. We love sharing our new recipes as they taste so good and people cannot believe we can eat all we do and lose weight.” Jason who is 3 stone 2 1/2 lbs lighter since joining Slimming World, says: “We’re lucky because as well as supporting each other, the group has also been there for us. Every week we swap recipes and if we ever struggled there has always been someone ready with a new idea. Our consultant Debbie Summers was also crucial with her support. It was the couple’s fellow slimmers who voted for them to represent the group as “Couple of the Year 2016” competition. Debbie , says: Robert & Jason are living proof that slimmers are more successful when they lose weight together and get support and motivation from others. Robert and Jason's weekly weight loss has been a joy.and inspiration to the rest of the group, including me. “I hope they’ll inspire everyone in Bristol too The theme of Free Food February is “love it, cook it, share it” so we 'want to show more people that healthy eating isn’t all carrot sticks and lettuce leaves. We had a huge spread at our group’s party, including mains, snacks and even desserts. From curries to quiches, scotch eggs to soups & cakes. It all looked and, more importantly, tasted – delicious!” To find out more about Free Food February and losing weight without hunger at Slimming World, pop along to the Slimming World group, which is held at Bedminster Down Ex Service Club every Thursday at 11.30am & 7.30 pm Or call Debbie on 07796945039

Well, it is finally upon us. As you can tell from our awesome cover this month, Batman V Superman: dawn of Justice is almost here! Batman V Superman is the story of… well, Batman fighting Superman. Batman believes that if there is even the slightest chance that Superman may turn on the human race, he has to be stopped. Which really is a fair concern to have, considering that Superman is 100% able to obliterate the planet with a single fiery stare. I'm not the world’s biggest Superman fan, in fact I’m complete opposite - I think Superman is one of the most 2D, lifeless, cardboard comic-book characters in history. That might sound harsh, but the guy’s only weakness just happens to be the rarest rock in the entire world. There’s no danger, realistically he cant ever loose a fight. But in this movie, danger doesn’t come from him losing the fight, it comes from him winning.
Lets say, just for a moment, that Batman is right, there is a slim chance that Superman will turn on human race. After having our greatest champion (Batman obviously) beat him up for a while, it’s something he’s fairly likely to do. Let’s also say that he can beat Batman, and the scene we saw where Batman is chained up underground isn’t a dream. If that happens, we all lose. We’ve seen that there are a handful of different victims in the movie - Lex Luthor, General Zod (although I’m pretty sure he was dead in that trailer), Doomsday and probably one that we haven’t seen yet. Chances are, then, that Batman will actually need to team up with Superman to beat the odds - and that’s where Wonder Woman comes in. she’ll be the mediator in this dysfunctional relationship and she will make sure they work together, or she’ll beat them both silly - and you better believe that she could.
What are you most looking forward to in Batman Superman: Dawn of Justice ? Be sure to let me know on twitter - @BenAllenWrites
As always, I’ll be attending the midnight launch of BVS at Cineworld Bristol, so why not come along and say hi. I’ll be interviewing people for their reactions for my podcast, which you can listen to here - soundclound.com/KencoAndMac Until next time, true believers - live long and prosper.

Ask the vet Are flowers and plants poisonous to pets? Many owners aren’t aware that certain plants and flowers are actually toxic to pets, and scarily enough, the list is apparently over 700 plants long! So here’s a few that you may come across this springtime: The most obvious is, of course, lilies. This spectacular flower is beautiful to look at, but it is extremely toxic to cats. Whether they have chewed on the plant or brushed against the pollen and cleaned themselves, it can cause kidney failure very quickly. Did you know that daffodils are poisonous to dogs? Every part of the daffodil, in particular the bulb, is very dangerous if eaten by your canine and can even be fatal. So take care if you have some sprouting in your garden when spring finally arrives. Avoid a bouquet of begonias, these are toxic to both cats and dogs and have been known to cause an intense burning of the mouth and throat.
Carnations aren’t the most dangerous but can cause mild digestive upsets, so it’s best to avoid if possible. A lovely bunch of colourful tulips can also be toxic to pets causing gastrointestinal pain, increased heart rate and breathing difficulties, although please be aware that it is the bulbs that actually cause the most problems. If you think your pet may have ingested something they shouldn’t or are unsure if a plant is safe to have around the house. please call Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 971 5115 as soon as possible. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Councillors Surgery Keeping Bristol clean-Its all about the money, money, money At this time of year, between December –March, all Councils focus on their budget planning for next and future years. Central Government announces to each Council, including Bristol City Council what it will have to spend and the amount each Council could raise from its Council Tax and Business rates. Local Government services have suffered severely under the Conservative –Lib Dem Coalition from a combination of severe budget cuts and Council Tax freezes. Bristol City Council is suffering even more severely than anyone predicted from this year 2016 onwards due to this Conservative Government giving us such a poor settlement, far worse by £millions than our neighbouring councils of South Gloucestershire, North Somerset or BANES. They have blatantly allocated more money to Conservative – controlled Councils. Bristol City Council has an annual Budget setting meeting when the Mayor puts forward his proposals and the political parties can amend them, trying to vote through their ideas. Of course, the Mayor can ignore them, but usually the budget setting meeting is an opportunity for ordinary back bench Councillors like myself to reflect the views of local constituents.
At this year’s Full Council Budget meeting, Labour is putting forward three amendments to improve our neighbourhoods; an extra Enforcement Officer to deal with littering and flytipping, and an extra Dog Warden to deal with the obvious, plus a longpromised recycling centre on Hartcliffe way. I am pleased to say that the Labour Group accepted my proposal for the Dog Warden and costs of a van to deal with the increasing problem of dog mess.
Lots of people in my ward of Brislington West have got in touch over this past year to say how bad the problem is getting. I am sorry to say that it seems to be worse around schools like Wicklea on Wick Road or Holymead Infants. I really can’t understand why dog owners don’t ‘sccop up the poop’; it doesn’t take much time and leaving it is really antisocial.
Another bad habit that has been reported in St Anne’s Wood and Nightingale Valley is picking up the poop, putting it in a plastic bag and hanging it in a tree. Come on dog owners, you can do better than this – it is a horrible sight in two beautiful areas. The same happens elsewhere. Likewise, fly tipping appears to be on the increase, especially in back lanes. My colleague Cllr Marg Hickman who represents the adjoining ward of Lawrence Hill put forward the plan for another Enforcement Officer, plus van. The entire Labour Group believes that there would be less fly tipping and more re-use/recycling if the long awaited Hartcliffe Way Recycling Centre was set up. Bristol only has two such Centres at present, the one we all use in St Philips and one off the Portway. Making waste easier to dispose of may lead to less dumping. Meanwhile: if you own a dog, clear up its poop and take it home. DON’T DUMP! Eileen Means Labour Councillor Brislington West

Spring gardening tips! Gardening in the spring is the next best time to garden behind the fall. The increased rainfall and temperatures provide a perfect setting for plants and their roots. Well established roots will help your plants fight off the damage droughts and insects throughout the year. Although not as good as planting in the fall, spring planting is still a very successful time to build a garden. Each plant has specific needs to be considered prior to planting. Certain plants require direct sunlight, shade, frequent watering, certain soil types, and drainage. A soil test can be done to understand the existing conditions. This test will reveal the nutrient level, pH level and soil texture. Without this information you could be wasting your time and money planting less tolerant and needy plants. Unfortunately, these often tend to be the more exotic and attractive plants. The next step would be to plan the grounds of your garden. Popular items to include are garden bridges, landscape rocks, and koi ponds. Garden bridges completely enrich your environment and require very little maintenance. Koi ponds on the other hand can require more work and maintenance but bring another sense of life to your garden. Make sure you plan your landscape prior to planting your spring flowers to ensure your project is completed properly. After you complete your site layout you can start preparing for planting. Based on your soil tests , fertilizer can be added to the soil correct whatever is needed for the plants chosen. Any changes to the soil should be mixed in well and as deep as possible to make sure the plant is able to take advantage of the adjustment as deep as its roots go. You will want to dig the holes for each plant in a oversized funnel shape. You will want to loosen the roots from the existing soil in the planter and place the plant in the hole. Release the plant from any basket or wiring prior to planting. Breaking the roots from the extended sides can stimulate the plant and allow it to grow larger within the hole. Mix in the soil in with the freed roots. Make sure the plants face is showing it's best side if it is visible and be sure it is planted straight. Do not pack the soil down to hard to allow the roots to expand easily. All that is left is to ensure that the plants are properly watered and not damaged. Following the steps listed above you can expect to enjoy your garden year after year.

Total PC support from Martin at Ship Shape Computers Why do I use Firefox ? As a PC and Mac repair expert, I’m often asked for my opinion on software choices: Norton vs AVG antivirus, Microsoft Office vs OpenOffice, etc etc. One of the most common questions is: which web browser do you use? People know it’s an important aspect of their online life, but they’re worried about security, privacy and other risks. So why is Firefox my browser of choice? So what difference does your browser choice make? My answer to anyone who wants to know which web browser to use is always, firstly, ‘it depends on personal preference’. You should try out a few and see which one you get on with. Ignore people’s advice, because that’s their preference. But I still offer my opinions on Firefox, because I think it will agree with a lot of people. I think you should at least try it out! Speed: Firefox always comes out middle of the pack for overall speed, but I’ve found that Google Chrome and Internet Explorer both hang a lot more when they’re opening for the first time that day, or opening a new website. Firefox, on the other hand, is much better behaved.
Privacy and tracking: These are hot topics right now, so I’m reassured that my Firefox browser is created by a non-profit organisation called Mozilla, rather than an advertising behemoth like Google or Microsoft. Mozilla are at the forefront of defending web users’ rights, and I want to support that. Security: Firefox has a good security reputation, and the fact that the software is Open Source (meaning anyone can inspect the code that goes into it) means that I’m confident that security flaws are found quickly and dealt with in a timely way. Try Firefox if you’re using the browser you were given As I’ve said, a web browser is a personal choice, and no one should force you into using one over another. But perhaps this article will encourage you to try it for the first time if you’ve not already, or come back to it if you’ve moved away. If you’ve any questions or problems with your browser, give me a call, or visit the Ship Shape Computers website at www.shipshapecomputers.co.uk
Add-ons: Now, this might not matter to you too much, but most browsers have a ‘marketplace’ for so-called add-ons. These are little extras which give new tools for the browser. For someone who builds websites like I do, there can be tools to test your designs, or try out new ones, but for most people there are useful things like email notification icons or note-taking add-ons. I can’t live without my little list of extra tools.

The sugar tax is coming We are eating too much sugar and it is bad for our health. Consuming too many foods and drinks high in sugar can lead to weight gain and related health problems, as well as tooth decay. Almost 25% of adults, 10% of 4 to 5 year olds and 19% of 10 to 11 year olds in England are obese, with significant numbers also being overweight. Treating obesity and its consequences alone currently costs the NHS £5.1bn every year.
Sugar intakes of all population groups are above the recommendations, contributing between 12 to 15% of energy. Consumption of sugar and sugar sweetened drinks is particularly high in school age children. It also tends to be highest among the most disadvantaged who also experience a higher prevalence of tooth decay and obesity and its health consequences. Over the last 30 to 40 years there have been profound changes in our relationship with food – how we shop and where we eat as well as the foods available and how they are produced. Food is now more readily available, more heavily marketed, promoted and advertised and, in real terms, is much cheaper than ever before. All of these nudge us towards over consumption. The changes have crept up on us and while none of this is anyone’s fault, it is time to do something about it. The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) has concluded that the recommended average population maximum intake of sugar should be halved: it should not exceed 5% of total dietary energy. SACN also recommended that consumption of sugar sweetened drinks should be minimised by both adults and children. By meeting these recommendations within 10 years we would not only improve an individual’s quality of life but could save the NHS, based on a conservative assessment, around £500m every year. SACN’s recommendations have already been accepted by government. They are now being integrated into official UK advice on the best dietary approach for health and key nutrition policy instruments, such as the eatwell plate and advice on institutional catering.
