So lets all get pissed then shall we? Or so it seems as we move in to further lockdown measures being relaxed this weekend meaning that we can all enjoy a cold beer down our local drinking hole. Just remember to pre-book your drinking slot as pubs are moving towards booking online in advance of your session. Personally I can not wait to get my noggin cut this weekend as my hair is getting stupidly out of hand after months of it going out of control. Some say I look like Barry Gibb of the iconic 70s group The Bee Gees either way its time for a short back and sides I think. It was such a shame to see a local lockdown come in to force this week as Leicester locked their doors once more, but stupidly allowing people to travel outside the city to shop. I can see this becoming a trend for the rest or the year as we persistently choose to take the piss with the rules that Boris and his team monkeys layout. Finally I would like to thank all those that took part in our last competition to win £250. As it was such a great success in generating more local subscribers we’ve only gone and done it again with a bigger prize fund up for grabs. visit page 6

Moment of remembrance #Thankyoutogether – – Saturday 4 July Sunday 5 July at 5pm Saturday 4 July, the day before the birthday, will be a moment of remembrance and reflection for those we have lost during the pandemic. This is a chance for the nation to come together and pay our respects. It is being led by the Together Coalition and we are asking people to place a light in their window or on their doorstep. As part of this collective memorial, and as a mark of respect and tribute to NHS staff, key workers and everyone who has played their part during the pandemic, iconic landmarks including the London Eye, Royal Albert Hall, Blackpool Tower and Wembley Arch will be illuminated in blue. NHS England are calling on sports stadiums, bridges, castles, monuments, conference venues and landmarks to join in lighting up our skylines and cities on the evening of 4 July. Thank you to the #MakeitBlue Collective who are supporting them as part of their #LightItBlue campaign. The campaign was created by the events and entertainment industry to show a united display of gratitude for health and key workers.
Sunday 5 July 1948 was the day the NHS was founded and the whole country is invited to come together at 5pm to applaud all those who have been helping us through the pandemic and recognise the vital community connections that continue to support us all. Broadcasters will suspend normal transmissions at 5pm. Everybody will be encouraged to stop what they’re doing and join with others (following social distancing advice of course) in their streets or neighbourhoods to applaud not just the NHS and other key workers but all those who have volunteered or helped keep services and community networks going. Following the applause, we hope people will enjoy a drink or a cup of tea and reflect with family, friends and neighbours on the bonds that have sustained us in recent months and will continue to do so.
Have a look at this list of the buildings that we have been told will be lit up. We will update the list as we hear about more, so please check back. They are also encouraging people to take photos and share them via social media using the hashtags #LightItBlue and #ThankYouTogether.

THE SKIES WILL BE FILLED WITH HOT AIR THIS SUMMER Its been recently confirmed that Bristol International Balloon Fiesta will take to the skies over Bristol this summer and our nightglow will take place online, but there will be no event at Ashton Court. In order to adhere to the governmental guidelines around social distancing, the 2020 edition of Bristol International Balloon Fiesta cannot take place as normal. BRISTOL FIESTA FLYPAST Instead we’re bringing you the inaugural Fiesta Flypast, which will see iconic balloons flying over the city on one morning to be selected between 1-14 August. We are inviting Bristolians to watch the balloons from the safety of their own doorsteps and gardens. Social distancing means we absolutely cannot gather in parks or Bristol’s open spaces or invite our audiences to see the balloons take off or land, to protect our pilots and the public. The location of the events will remain private in order to adhere to government guidelines and Bristol audiences are urged to stay away from public spaces and protect the city from incurring any surge in Covid-19 as a result of the event.
VIRTUAL NIGHTGLOW: SATURDAY 8TH AUGUST We have also teamed up with BBC Radio Bristol for another lockdown treat, in the form of a virtual nightglow, staged with extra special additions and a soundtrack produced to lift the spirits of the city on Saturday 8th August. Emma Britton, Breakfast Show presenter at BBC Radio Bristol explains; “We loved creating the soundtrack to last year’s Nightglow – so we’re delighted to be able to team up with the fiesta organising team again this year to bring a taste of the event to Bristolians, as well as being able to reach fans of the fiesta further afield through a virtual event. We’ll be creating an upbeat soundtrack and working with the balloonists to choreograph what we hope will be an amazing show to watch online with some special surprises.” With just over one month to go to the traditional fiesta event dates, more information will be announced over the coming weeks. Follow the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on @bristolballoon.

Wapping Wharf welcomes people back to its much-loved harbourside community People urged to support the quarter’s independent businesses but act responsibly when doing so..
"We are working very hard to ensure that the public spaces and facilities at Wapping Wharf are safe and pleasant for everyone, and closely with the businesses themselves to make sure their customers Over the last few months, many of the businesses have adapted in innovative ways, launching delivery feel at ease. services and offering takeaway. Now, shops have re-opened their doors and many of the restaurants "We are all living in challenging times but this is particularly so for the hospitality, leisure and retail are due to do the same in the coming weeks. sectors, so we kindly ask for collaboration from the wider public so everyone can enjoy what's on offer whilst keeping safe."
Umberslade, the developer behind Wapping Wharf, is working closely with the businesses to put in place a series of measures to ensure people can enjoy what's on offer safely whilst still making sure the environment is a pleasant place for everyone. Measures include one-way systems within CARGO 1 and 2 and signage to encourage people to keep their distance from one another and queue appropriately.
There are also plans in the coming weeks to create an extended outdoor seating area at the bottom of Gaol Ferry Steps between Wild Beer and CARGO 1 during the afternoons and evenings, with pedestrians and cyclists re-directed around the back of CARGO 1. Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre.
Now home to over 40 independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO - a popular hub made of converted shipping containers, The Wapping Wharf team urges members of the Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city's best public to respect the area, act responsibly and independent restaurants, shop, cafes and lifestyle follow the guidance in place as part of the collective businesses. national effort to keep coronavirus at bay. Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, said: "We would encourage people to support our fantastic array of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and other businesses following a very difficult few months for everyone.

Your Garden In July
Fling the doors open to the garden and head outside! Summer is here and what better way to spend your free time than being outside and enjoying your beautiful flower filled garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of bloom. Make sure you keep new plants well hydrated to get them through those long, hot days and hoe off those pesky weeds, which can thrive in the sunshine. Although this still can be a busy time in the garden, don’t forget to find the time to sit back and relax so that you can enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in to achieve your beautiful display.
The essential gardening jobs for July FEED, WEED, AND DEADHEAD Adding a liquid feed to your weekly watering regime will give a much needed boost to hanging baskets, container and borders helping them to produce more flowers and, in some cases encouraging a second flourish of flowers late in the season. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials will also benefit from regular deadheading.
With Hanging baskets a bit of common sense goes a long way. Try lifting a container or basket. Does if feel light or under watered? How does the compost look? Is it pale and shrunken away from the sides? Dig into the compost with your fingers. Does it feel dry? It should be moist but not dripping wet. During prolonged dry spells, water at least once a day.
PLANT OF THE MONTH: Salvia
SPEND SOME LAZY HOURS IN THE GARDEN
How should you plant them? Plant in full sun, with very well drained soil, and water well when it’s dry. Trim in the spring to maintain shape and deadhead once the flowers start to fade.
A member of the sage family. Salvias are diverse group of plants ranging from annuals to herbaceous perennials and herbs Why should you plant them? With flowers that are popular with wildlife, they not only deliver colour and fragrance but are also great at attracting bees and butterflies. Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a great show from June through much of the summer and in to autumn.
This will prolong the flowering period making the garden more attractive and will also prevent the plants from putting their energy in to seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. Don’t forget to keep weeds down they steal vital moisture and nutrients. Kill them by regularly hoeing borders and vegetable patches. Larger weeds should be dug out or pulled up by hand.
10
After all your hard work, enjoy the sunshine and laze in your garden.

ADGE CUTLER - LEGEND OF THE WEST
Earlier this week Adge Cutler hit the headlines when a statue of the West Country founder of The Wurzels in Nailsea was given “googly eyes” by some wag. The incident made the front page of The Star newspaper, making a joke of it and likening it to the attacks on other statues around the world. Adge was one of the West Country’s great larger-than-life performers, writing songs with many local place names in it – and of course the West Country anthem Drink Up Thy Zider. Adge was a great joker and no doubt would have had a great laugh at the statue incident – and his life story is more fascinating than many people might realise. Adge: King of the Wurzels, the only major biography of Adge Cutler, tells how he formed the group in 1966 and set about taking the country by storm with his songs about the people and places of the West. Of course the Wurzels, who went on to top the charts, are still pulling in the crowds today. Author and journalist John Hudson spoke to scores of Adge’s relatives, friends and acquaintances to write the book (which you can find at www.bristolbooks.org) to give a unique insight into the life and untimely death of a man whose songs are still loved all over the region and beyond. He uncovered how some of Adge’s most famous songs came about, details his jobs, from working at a cider mill to roadie for Acker Bilk, and examined the events of the weekend he died on his return from a late-night gig in Hereford.
12
He may have acted like a bumpkin with his neckerchief and blackthorn stick but Adge was a complex man who in many ways was very different from his hale and hearty stage image. Ity turns out he even preferred red wine to cider and could speak fluent Spanish! Said John Hudson: “Talking to those who knew Adge I was struck by the warmth and affection in which they remembered him. Long before he was a professional entertainer, he was always thought of as somebody special. "He was endlessly fascinated by what was going on around him, whether it was the village life of Nailsea, with all its rich characters, the rough-andtumble of the building site at Portishead power station or the thriving Bristol jazz and folk scenes of the Fifties and Sixties. "A lot of people know that Adge was Acker Bilk's road manager before he carved out a musical career of his own – but long before that he was entertaining his friends with his songs and forever scribbling down lyrics on the back of cigarette packets. He was a brilliant writer – one who never lost the common touch and had the ability to set his rhymes to music in a way that captivated thousands, and still does today, nearly 50 years on." The strange incident this week has only served to throw the spotlight once more on the life of a giant among the West Country's best-loved entertainers. Labour Leaves Brislington West Brislington West Liberal Democrat Councillor, Jos Clark, and Councillor Candidate, Andrew Varney would like to extend their best wishes to Cllr. Harriet Bradley, who announced her resignation recently due to ill-health. Both Jos and Andrew hope Harriet can now get the time she needs to make a speedy recovery. Jos said, ‘I have worked with Harriet in Brislington West for the last four years. Although Harriet didn’t live in the ward, I believe she had the best interests of the residents at heart and I would like to thank her on behalf of local people’. Andrew added, ‘I was very grateful for Harriet’s support for my long-standing campaign to stop the destructive Callington Road Link, despite going against the wishes of the Mayor and the Bristol Labour group’. Cllr. Harriet Bradley’s resignation now leaves a vacant seat in the two-councillor ward of Brislington West. We believe that local people deserve full representation on the council but due to the coronavirus pandemic, all elections, including by-elections, are currently suspended this year. However, should the guidelines change, the Brislington Liberal Democrats are ready to stand Andrew Varney as their hardworking local councillor candidate.
16
Andrew has been part of the Brislington Liberal Democrat team for the last four years, ably assisting Cllr. Jos Clark in fulfilling her duties. Andrew said, ‘it has been an immense privilege working together with Jos since her election in 2016. During that time we have fought many campaigns together including saving Jubilee Pool, preventing the closure of Wick Road Library, winning funding for environmental improvements on Sandy Park Road, campaigning for the Brislington Greenway, and so much more’. Jos added, ‘As a hardworking community activist, Andrew has demonstrated his commitment to the people of Brislington West time after time. As a local councillor for the ward, I know he could achieve even more’. Brislington West Councillor Candidate Andrew Varney with acting leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey. DATA PROTECTION WARNING TO HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES The much-anticipated re-opening of businesses in the food and drink sector has been given the green light for 4 July, a welcome decision for both those in the industry and consumers. However, the opening of these businesses comes with additional responsibilities and requirements which specialist lawyers are warning could leave businesses falling foul of the data protection rules. Amy Peacey, a senior associate in the commercial team with national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP, says businesses will need to review and update their data protection knowledge and processes quickly in order to open their doors on the 4th. “The loosening of the lock down restrictions comes as a welcome relief to businesses within the retail and food & drink sector. However, the ability to reopen will impose upon business owners’ additional requirements they will not have encountered before, in addition to ensuring effective social distancing measures are in place for both employees and customers,” said Amy. “The Government has requested that businesses keep a temporary record of their customers for 21 days, in a way that is manageable for the business, to assist the NHS Test and Trace scheme with requests for that data if needed. “Many businesses who take bookings will already have systems in place for recording customer details such as restaurants, hotels, and hair salons, however, there will be several establishments who do not collect customer details currently such as pubs and cafes which will need to change their processes. “Becoming data collectors means that these businesses are subject to data protection rules under the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Data will need to be stored securely and only kept for reasonable period of time. Businesses will need to think about who can access this information, how they inform customers of their policies and also about how they ensure the information given by customers is legitimate.” It is likely that many businesses will come across customers who will not co-operate with the Government’s proposed requirements. It is unclear at this stage the specific obligations that will be imposed upon businesses in relation to the collection of customer data and the transfer of such data to the NHS Test and Trace scheme.
The Government is working with industry bodies and the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) to provide detailed guidance on how businesses should design their customer data collection systems to be compliant with data protection legislation and these new requirements. The Government has said that it will provide detailed guidance to businesses “shortly”. With the lack of guidance at this stage and many businesses looking to open in early July Amy has set out below a few points to assist businesses with their obligations under the Data Protection legislation. 1. You must make sure that any personal data collected for compliance with Covid-19 requirements is not used for any other purpose such as sending marketing communications about offers or promotions. 2. When collecting personal data from your customers only take what you need such as a name and telephone number/email address. 3. You must provide your customer with a privacy notice setting out why you are collecting the data and what you will be doing with it. This will need to include amongst other things, details about using the information to contact them in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak and passing the information to the NHS (if required) for the purposes of the NHS Test & Trace scheme. 4. You need to have in place clearly documented processes for how your business will collect, store, and dispose of customer personal data. You will also need to make sure that all your employees are aware of and follow the required processes. Amy said: “We’re all looking forward to life returning to as near to normal as possible and it’s great that the Government are taking these restrictive measures to allow for the safe opening of businesses but without more guidance and businesses being stringent in their data collection procedures, this could turn into a data protection nightmare.” If you would like any further information about your obligations under the Data Protection legislation in connection with the collection of customer personal data or the drafting of appropriate privacy notices, contact Amy Peacey on 0345 209 1329 or amy. peacey@clarkewillmott.com

WITH SCHOOLS STILL CLOSED AND LACK OF CHILDCARE, THE IMPACT ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN IS REALLY BEGINNING TO SHOW…
I’m a local mother and employee of women’s charity Bristol Women’s Voice and as we enter month five of home schooling for some, I’m hearing huge worries and concerns from mothers over their children’s welfare, money and work and the future. And if you’re wondering why I single out mothers it because it is often their work and careers which are being disproportionately impacted by a combination of COVID and school closures. Whilst many have accepted that children are unlikely to return to school before September, they were hoping that there might be childcare in the holidays to give both respite and allow some to pick up work again. Like the majority of families throughout the UK many parents in Brislington did the best they could during lockdown, some were furloughed, others balanced work and home schooling, some like Mel had to balance self-employment and two children as her partner is a key worker…
Despite the fact It’s 2020, it’s as though the Government think women who are self-employed are doing it as a hobby, to earn a bit of ‘pocketmoney’. Actually, many of us, like me, are the breadwinner, supporting a lower paid partner and in many cases, a key worker. “Despite this, women are still expected to magically pick up the pieces and make it all work when it comes to childcare. We eventually sent our kids back to school after half term using our keyworker spaces – despite any health concerns we might have had – as I couldn’t not work to look after them and lose all my income. One keyworker salary in a low paid job doesn’t pay the bills.
“Now we have the school holidays fast approaching, childminder places are like hen’s teeth and the majority of holiday clubs, traditionally more affordable, haven’t yet been told by the Government if they can open. With less than three weeks to go how are self-employed women meant to find and take on work with any certainty? I’ve been lucky enough to find one provider who is opening so I can keep working, but others I know have turned down work because they can’t find any childcare during the summer holidays or the price has increased so much they’d be paying more than they’d be making. Employed friends have put their hands up to be furloughed, which works for the summer holiday childcare challenge, but is the price they pay the danger of being first on the redundancy list when the Government reduces salary contributions at the end of August? Is this timing a coincidence? “All in all, women lose out when it comes to the Government’s approach to Covid-19. It’s as though no-one has actually joined the dots between work, the economy and the provision of childcare.”
20
Mel is one of many parents in this situation. As parents we did what we had to do because we ‘were in it together’ apparently? We thought it was temporary and were holding onto the fact that surely getting children back into education in some form would be everyone’s top priority? After all a children’s right to education is a basic human right as stated by the UN Convention and Education Act of 1996. The COVID crisis is unprecedented and unpredictable and during lockdown everyone understood that and wanted to protect the rights of both our children and school staff. I think we all went into this expecting that when the country starts to unlock education and childcare provision would be high on the list of priorities, if not the first priority then surely higher on the list than opening Ikea, garden centre, pubs and now all other shops? Children are really starting to struggle now, I’m hearing reports of children having emotional breakdowns, losing confidence and struggling with schoolwork, and hence self worth and of course there will be vulnerable children suffering who may continue to do so for many more months. The lack of school provision combined with lack of available childcare over the school holidays is having a disproportionate impact on some children and also women because traditionally they’re often the ones whose working pattern is dictated by school and childcare provision. Meanwhile pubs and shops are open and the beaches are packed, and there’s still no coherent strategy in place from the government for school and affected parents.
These issues are being raised with government by the LGA, by the Labour Party in Westminster. Until we have some government guidance we can't do anything locally but I know that this issue is top priority. There are huge numbers of women (especially) who will not be able to work this summer and the government needs to firstly acknowledge this and secondly make sure something is done safely to support those children and parents’ As a candidate for Brislington West I’d like to hear from you about your thoughts on this, and what can BCC and local support networks do to help? Before lock down I had secured some funding to work with the charity Empire Fighting Chance to bring some youth services to Brislington for local teenagers. I’m in touch with Empire to see if they can offer some half day training and well being sessions for young people in the area. Whilst this only touches the sides of the issue I am hoping it might offer both local parents and teenagers a bit of respite. In the meantime if you want to add your views, please contact me via my Facebook page Carolyn4BrislingtonWest :https://www.facebook. com/CarolynMagson/ Or email: Carolyn4BrislingtonWest
I spoke to Councillor Helen Godwin, the council member for Women, Children and Young People, particularly regarding the situation with lack of childcare for working families locally and she’s equally as frustrated..

Welcome to the council's coronavirus information and advice newsletter As lockdown eases in our city we need to remain vigilant and prepared for potential outbreaks of coronavirus cases. An outbreak means more than one person in one place has the virus, for example in a factory, a school or a care home. We have created Bristol’s Local Outbreak Management Plan which says how we will work with our partners in the NHS and Public Health to prevent the spread of coronavirus and what we need to do if there is an outbreak. More information is below.
It’s also really important that you book a test if you have coronavirus symptoms. Everyone in the same household should stay at home and self-isolate until the test results are through. Call 119 for details on how to book and where to go for a test.
This weekend there are two events to commemorate 72 years of the NHS at time when we have never appreciated more the amazing service provided. On Saturday there will be a moment of remembrance and reflection for those we have lost during the pandemic. Please join in by placing a light in your window or doorstep in the evening. On Sunday at 5pm, the whole country is invited to come together to clap for those who have been helping us through the pandemic.
Two new toilet facilities are being installed today in Queens Square and the Lloyds Amphitheatre on the Harbourfront. These are a temporary measure available until businesses and other premises have reopened their toilet facilities. They will be open from 10am until 10pm each day and cleaned regularly during the day. Please follow these guidelines to protect yourself and others: • One person only - unless from the same household • Keep your distance from others. Wait away from entrance, allow others to exit before you enter • Use hand gel provided, both before and after entering • Lower toilet lid before you flush, wash your hands for 20 seconds • Dry hands thoroughly before your exit
Stay safe and take care. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol
Bristol Outbreak Control Plan As the coronavirus pandemic continues, we want to make sure people are protected, particularly as more shops, businesses and schools reopen. We need to monitor where and when there are coronavirus cases, and take quick action if there is a local outbreak. Today we published our Local Outbreak Management Plan, which explains how we will do this. The council will work with other organisations, trying to prevent people catching the virus and responding if there is a local outbreak in areas and places like schools, businesses and care homes. We know that lots of people found lockdown really hard, particularly those who struggled to get food and medicine, or people that have a business to run. We want to do everything we can to stop another widespread lockdown and this plan will help us be prepared.

North Somerset School Opens Up To All Year Groups A North Somerset school has opened its doors to all year groups following the recent easing of the nationwide lockdown. Fairfield School in Backwell has been able to welcome back all of its pupils in all year groups. Due to its small class sizes, the school has been able to spread children out enough so that every year group can return to the classroom and enjoy a full curriculum. Utilising its larger spaces such as the assembly hall when needed, children work on individual desks set up with everything they need for the day. The school is also operating staggered drop-off and pick-up times, staggered break and lunchtimes and with the kitchens remaining closed, pupils are bringing their own packed lunches in. Fairfield School headmistress Lesley Barton said: “We are thrilled to have welcomed back all of our year groups over the past couple of weeks and the children are delighted to be back too. “During lockdown we worked really hard to provide our pupils with a stimulating, broad and engaging virtual learning programme which worked really well but it’s fantastic to have them back in school socialising with their friends, which in turn takes the strain off of their parents, who are very appreciative! To be able to offer full-time education to all is something we’re really delighted to be able to offer.
26
“We are still running our remote learning programme for those families who have decided not to return yet, ensuring that all our children receive the best education possible.” Fairfield School is an independent co-educational school for children aged 2 to 11. Class sizes are limited to around 20 at Fairfield, with many much smaller, and there is a very wide range of clubs and activities, sport, music and drama to excite the interest of pupils. Lesley continued: “The children have been absolutely brilliant at adapting to the new systems, including hand washing, sanitising and hygiene measures. “Opening up to all age groups means that the children are able to gain closure for this academic year. There are only a few weeks before the end of term, but it is so important for the pupils to have the chance to say goodbye to their teachers and spend some time with their friends.” Fairfield is historically a PNEU School, which means it is affiliated to the Parents’ National Education Union. There are PNEU schools throughout the UK and the world. For more information about Fairfield School visit http://fairfield.school/ or contact secretary@fairfieldschool. org.uk

PLASTIC FREE CLEVEDON
So its that time of year again! And our second since Plastic Free Clevedon began in March of 2019. It's going to look a bit different this year, we had hoped to have a town wide month of all things Plastic-free; but we haven’t let Covid-19 stop us, we have moved it all online!
We’ve got some great activities for all the family! Going plastic free can be really hard, but reducing our plastic use is easy, there are some great simple and quick wins which can have a huge impact! So without further ado ... Enjoy the journey guys! For those of you that aren't familiar with this month long campaign ... Plastic Free July is a global movement that takes place every year and helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution. Working towards cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities, and helping to look after our wonderful planet. It's is not about being perfect, or being completely plastic free. Going plastic-free is not easy, you only have to take a look at your supermarket shop to know this, but reducing your plastic use is definitely possible! Even making just small changes can have a huge impact on our planet, for instance if just 1 in 10 Brits refilled their water bottle once a week, we would save around 340 million plastic bottles a year! Started by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (the founder of the Plastic Free Foundation) and a small team in local government in Western Australia in 2011, Plastic Free July is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world. Millions of people across the globe take part every year, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution far beyond the month of July. Many different environment and plastic pollution related groups and organisations run events and campaigns during Plastic Free July to help get everyone started on their journey to ditching single-use plastic. As a movement of nearly 1,500 organizations from all over the world, we have the power to let our communities, cities, and countries know that we can say no to single-use plastic!
30
Throughout this month we will supporting you guys in your plastic free journeys, with tips and advice on ditching the single use, keeping you up to date with how our plastic free journeys are going, campaigns that you can join in on, the biggest art installation ever coordinated by Surfers Against Sewage; and much more. We will also be sharing the work of our friends and colleagues at local Plastic Free Community groups, and charities like Surfers Against Sewage, Marine Conservation Society, City to Sea, Refill, and Break Free From Plastic, who work at a national level to drive big change. Together we can make this happen! So we hope you are ready and looking forward to a super month! It may be a bit different to what we were all expecting, and are used to, but we hope you enjoy it all the same! Do keep us posted through our social media channels (FB/IG @plasticfreeclevedon) with what you guys are up to, how you are doing and what you would like to see form us. New council homes planned for North Bristol Bristol City Council has submitted plans to build more than 327 new affordable homes - the majority of which will be council housing. As Bristol starts to look once more towards the future, the council has submitted planning applications for seven sites in North Bristol as part of the New Build Housing Programme which began in 2014. Lockleaze is set for the biggest transformation with over 260 homes planned for sites at Bonnington Walk, Muller Road and Branwhite Close. Mayor Marvin Rees said: “Now, more than ever, we need to make sure we are building housing people can afford, to make sure that those who have been financially affected by the pandemic are not further left behind. “ We cannot underestimate the challenge we face to rebuild the city’s economy, but by putting plans in place to keep building, we are taking a huge step in the right direction. “These developments, if approved, will allow us to continue with our plans to build diverse and well balanced communities. I am particularly pleased to see so many houses proposed for Lockleaze, as we have been working with the local community for some time to drive development in the area." If approved, 185 modular homes, half of which will be affordable, would be built at Bonnington Walk by Legal & General Modular Homes, who have worked closely with the council and the local community to design plans for the site. Bonnington Walk is a former allotment gardens and has been allocated for housing in Bristol’s Local Plan for over 20 years. It is one of 43 sites the council has made available for new housing since 2016. The land is due to be developed using modern methods of construction, as an innovative solution to help address the shortage of housing in north Bristol. As well as providing much needed homes, the proposed development at Bonnington Walk will see improvements made to adjoining areas of the site as part of a long term plan for investing in Lockleaze.
New allotment patches and accessible green open space will be introduced to complement the existing community orchard, a new local community hub will be built, and walking, cycling and road improvements will be made. The other sites that have been submitted for planning, which will include a mix of council homes and shared ownership properties, are the former Brentry Elderly Persons Home, Knole Lane (34 homes), St Peters House, Horfield (28 homes), and three sites across Lawrence Weston (Capel Road, Littlemead and Oakhanger - 57 homes). Councillor Paul Smith, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We want people to know that our housing development and planning departments remain open for business and we are more committed than ever to tackling the housing crisis. “Modern Methods of Construction can help to increase the speed of delivery, so we are exploring where we can use them, across the city, to accelerate our new build programme.” The New Build Housing Programme makes use of land owned by the council, regenerating brownfield sites, to provide new high quality homes in key areas across the city. Since the start of the programme, the council has built over 150 new council homes. There are also 133 homes currently under construction at Ashton Rise – an innovative development where the council is building houses for sale on the private market for the first time. In addition another five sites are being progressed, which would see an additional 219 homes built across the city. These are scheduled to be submitted for planning later this year. The council’s ambition is to accelerate the delivery of new housing over the next five years, creating 1,000 new homes through various delivery routes, including both brownfield sites and new builds. In November of last year, Bristol City Council won a prestigious national award for its approach to modular housing in St George which is now on site, and last year won two architectural awards in recognition of its sustainable housing developments showing not only we are building new homes, but we are building quality homes for the future. How to add long-term value to your Bristol property In Bristol we have certainly been busy with new properties coming onto the market and buyers eager to view. Lockdown has meant we have spent many an hour at home and, as such, you could have been contemplating what improvements you could make. If you think you may sell your home in the future, at NEXA we want to help you make the right decisions, and home improvements are the easiest way to add long-term value to your property. 1. Structure Structural issues can ring alarm bells with buyers and can also massively affect the value of your home. Therefore, if you have any structural issues that you are aware of, you need to ensure that you make these repairs a priority – even if you have cosmetic improvements you wanted to focus on. We know that often with structural repairs if feels like you have nothing to show for the money you have spent, but if you don’t get any structural defects fixed, no matter what upgrades you make in your home, its value may be stumped. 2. Energy efficiency More and more now, energy efficiency is cited as a key feature buyers are looking for, and so any energy-efficient features you have can make a huge difference to the value of your home in Bristol. Many new-build homes have such features included as standard, but older homes are way behind in many ways, such as insulation. If you do own an older home it is worth making investments in energy efficiency, whether that’s insulation, windows or even your heating system. Simply upgrading your boiler can have a significant impact of the efficiency of your home. 3. Increasing space Having been confined to our homes, many of us are dreaming of more space. Are there any possibilities to add space to your home? That could be a conservatory, or a single-story extension – try to be creative, not predictable. Extensions with skylights or sleek glass roofs can connect the indoors with the outdoors with sophisticated elegance. Do your research for inspiration and you could be adding a dining room, playroom or even a much sought-after home office to your property.
38
If you can’t extend from the ground floor, how about looking at a loft conversion to increase the space and maybe add a bedroom to your home? A loft conversion is a great investment as it adds more accommodation to your property, though remember you need to make room for a full staircase. When it comes to adding value to your home, an extra bedroom is a fantastic place to start and can increase the sale price of your property, but be aware that there could be a ceiling value for your street so it could be wise to get some guidance before you start. 4. Decorating
One of the most obvious and easiest ways to add value to your home is by decorating. A tired or neglected décor, or something that is quirky and individual, can not only turn off buyers but limit the potential value of your property. Decorating jobs don’t need to cost the earth, but the return can be seen in helping to sell your home at the optimum price. Whether you fix some peeling paint, change paint and wallpaper, replace mouldy sealants in your kitchen and bathroom, or stop a tap from leaking, every little fix and detail could boost your home’s value. 5. Kitchens and bathrooms The reason why kitchen and bathrooms are known to sell houses is because they cost a significant amount to upgrade, so a home in need of a kitchen or bathroom upgrade could be seen as a costly investment to buyers. There are many ways to revamp these rooms without replacing everything entirely – new doors and worktops could be added, new tiles, or even just a paint job can completely transform a space. Don’t be overwhelmed and the task at hand, resourceful changes can attract buyers and also play a major role in increasing the potential value of your property. This is just the beginning These are just five of the many ways you could add value to your Bristol home, we are always here to advise you on what buyers are looking for right now and where best to invest your monies. If you’re thinking of selling your home, contact me personally on 07807778350 or email jake@ nexabristol.com

European Tour Caddy Returns To The Manor House As New PGA Coaching Professional European Tour caddy and professional golfer Louis Boston is ready to share his vast knowledge and experience of the game with members of The Manor House as he looks to make his mark at the Wiltshire club. The 32-year-old makes the move to the spectacular par-72, 18-hole venue from his role at Chippenham Golf Club and looks to build on the club’s reputation of high-standard golf coaching. Boston’s new role will see him return ‘home’, as he was a junior member at The Manor House in the early days of his golf career, starting the game at aged 15, where he already showed glimpses of a bright future with a call-up to the Somerset first team. His impressive career went from strength to strength from there, leading to him turning pro in 2012. Boston has now competed on the Jamega, Europro, Asian Development and TP tours, as well as several regional and national PGA events, with a prominent win on the TP Tour and numerous wins on the west region circuit. Alongside competing at many high profile events, Boston recently branched out to caddying on the European Tour to learn from the very best, which has helped him develop as a player and a coach. 46
The PGA qualified coach is hoping that his experience caddying and playing at a high level, combined with his work ethic to learn modern coaching techniques, will stand him in good stead for the new role, which will see him run individual and group lessons at The Manor House for players of all ages and abilities. Boston said: “I am delighted to be back at The Manor House, where I was a junior member back in the day, hoping to bring back the expertise that I have gained over the years to get the best out of the golfers who play here. I’m hoping that my experiences have made me a more informed, well-rounded coach that will benefit both beginners and more experienced players. “I feel privileged to be able to work at one of the best courses in the UK, there really aren’t many courses with the picturesque scenery of the Cotswolds! But not only is it beautiful, it’s testing, which is great for me as a coach, because it gives me a very good understanding of where my clients are at.” Located in the pretty village of Castle Combe, Wiltshire, just 10 minutes from Junction 17 of the M4, The Manor House Golf Club is home to a delightful championship-standard course and is immersed in the enchanting surroundings of the Cotswolds, with 365 acres of breathtaking rolling countryside as a backdrop.
Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the mature oak and beech trees that line the beautifully manicured fairways, together with the immaculate greens and the River Bybrook meandering through the middle, bring both drama and beauty to the 6,500-yard parkland course, which is rightly considered one of the best in the South West. If you are interested in lessons with Louis Boston, please contact him on: louisbostonpga@gmail. com or call 07912495971.
